Not all of them are like that unfortunately. I’m glad the police officer did that. Gave me hope that there is change coming to all police officers in Guatemala. Most of them have 6th grade education that are waiting to retire. Most common education level is now 9th grade and supposedly they now want college graduates only. I myself have never been harassed or asked for money to go through but it’s a common everyday practice. Be very careful down there, masked men, with machetes and guns Usually hide in bushes on dirt roads, especially in the western part of the country.

Late Atitlan sees a lot of foreign visitors, including backpackers and language students. They know they have to keep it somewhat safe (safer than a lot of Guatemala) to keep tourists coming and bringing money (fancy police cars are a clue). (Note: even the road out of San Marcos has banditos at time, normally going after walking tourists).
San Pedro is great, especially around Semana Santa time. A wonderful place to spend some time at a langauge school to learn Spanish and do a homestay.
San Marcos is much quieter with basically only one road through town.
The lake is a wonderful place to spend some time, though as everywhere it is facing environmental issues.

What a joy to see the world through the eyes of Itchy Boots. What most of us see as scary, threatening or nearly impossible, she sees as an opportunity to interact with the local residents and to challenge herself further in her great adventure. "To protect and serve" is the motto of many local police organizations. Obviously in this section of Guatemala it is "To protect, serve and ride!" whenever one gets the chance.

To be fair people just need to be open minded. I think social media, always 'on' news etc (and remember bad news sells) along with many governments using 'divide and rule' and 'hostile environment' makes people scared and untrusting.
Humans just want to get along and have fun.
Bad areas still have good people.
Just be open, honest, still alert but treat people how you want to be treated. It works

"tame"??? It's 300cc. It's an appropriate size / weight for a smaller person but woefully underpowered for bad surfaces. Only way to "tame" it is to max it out. Timidity kills. The policeman just gave it big handfuls of throttle, nothing special or clever. Noraly needs to follow his example and rev A LOT harder and speed up generally. If it was a 650 with bags of low-rev torque then maybe she'd get away it and fall off less...but it would be too big n heavy to pick up. She chose it for its size (wisely I think) but the flip side is she has to compensate for low power low torque by REVVING IT HARDER!

    • @nightdan7096
      @nightdan7096 2 роки тому +27

@@philbowles3240 It's a fuel injected dual overhead cam, 4 valve engine, made for higher revs and you're right, she needs to use more throttle off-road instead of riding it so mellow. She switches out of 1st gear way to early. She always slows to a stop when she sees a hill or dirt and then just allows herself to fall over. I really hope she learned from the officer that Alaska has plenty of power if she would just use it.

She's from a colonial country, they always do things like this. They take the dangerous road on purpose. They get killed in places like Afghanistan all the time. They believe that they have a right to go where they want and the locals will leave them alone or protect them because they are from a "civil" country. So they can return home and tell their friends over tea how they went through the barbaric area safely. I'm from a non colonial European country, no one from my country would dare think they had a right to use your police time like this.

Noraly. Always enjoy watching when you meet very friendly local people , and even better when those people are the police. I think the policeman really did enjoy riding Alaska, and he obviously was experienced. So happy you got through the dangerous area without incident.👍. Thanks for sharing. Cheers and stay safe. Dan ✌️🏍🇨🇦

Love your humbleness and being real. Helps us all each day! Super smart to get assistance from police. Smart choice. Glad you made it to the next town. Love the narrow streets, colorful buildings, and seeing how people are so helpful. Keep smiling- you are awesome.

Noraly, the greatest joy in being on your blog, is you never owe us an explanation. I also think maybe his weight had something to do with it. I’m really happy that you had a police escort, and I applaud you for making it happen, and looking out for yourself. Thank you for all the editing that you do, it’s always a blast to be on an adventure with you.

Its very good that the police were able to be of assistance. The officer at the office was very helpful and honest. I hope your travels continue to be full of good interactions like this. Your police escort did a great job stepping in in the difficult road hill climb. That's pretty impressive stepping in on a bike that is unfamiliar. I'll call it multitasking because the bandits were kept away and getting to ride Alaska was a nice little thank you bonus for him. That town was sure has a lot of elevation change along with moto friendly allies. Its nice to hear the explanation of the difficulty on the difficult road section at the end of the video. I hope it was a good stay at the hotel. Its so interesting to be along for the travels.

I think the police man had an advantage of extra weight to give him more traction.

@@ianfutcher1518 I think that's a good point. On top of the tires not being the best. The extra weight would help with some traction as well as just having better leverage. As she had said the tires that are installed were the only option at the time. I think it is quite exceptional of the officers to provide the extra service in order to ensure she was able to navigate the obstacle safely.

That was a fun video, thanks! I’m from Guatemala. 48 years ago, a friend and I rode the first motorcycle - a Yamaha 360 - around the lake (except for the last section, for which there was no trail, forcing us to put the bike on a canoe). The towns were so much smaller back then. The nice people and the beautiful lake have not changed, however.

Its great the level of care you put on each step, like checking with the local police... that must avoid many stress along the way! Great video and good luck on your journey!
