    Thank you for yet another informative and excellent video. You keep getting better with each presentation which made me wonder why you are not on some PBS, travel or history channel. Your episodes are much more factual and entertaining than what I am seeing on established television and I think you should plan to sell these marvellous series. Best of luck. I'm waiting to see you guys dressed as Vikings🤓

    LOVING THIS SERIES, All places I know very well, love Lindisfarne many trips up there and we had a whole school trip there one summer, was amazing! Bamburgh Castle is really nice, Durham is a beautiful town and Fountain's Abbey, It looks so amazing in summer when it's sunny and all the flowers are out... but wow all of those drone shots are just so cool! I really love your videos and cant wait till the next one!

    OMG! I've read the first 8 or 9 books in the Saxon Chronicles by Bernard Cornwell, and loved them all! I've also wanted to make it to see Durham Cathedral and Bamburg Castle, and, as I'm 73 now, I find it increasingly difficult to jump on a jet and tool around in Mini Coopers. So I am absolutely thrilled to follow you on your travels in Northumberland and Scotland. My people were lowland Scots, but I married into Clan Gunn, and still hope to make it up to the top of Scotland someday. Meanwhile, I've got you to follow! Thank you, thank you.

    Yes, boys! This is my favourite video of yours yet. Lindisfarne is so beautiful, and it's such a shame you guys didn't have time to go up the cathedral, the view from the top is insane! I've just started the Saxon stories but even without that Bamburgh Castle is one of my favourite places. I go there a lot and we often walk our dogs around that area, whenever I think of a castle that is always the first thing to come to mind. I've only been the Fountain's Abbey once but it's definitely a beautiful and spiritual place. Also, RE what Marko said about getting a DJ and having a party, at Tynemouth Priory, which isn't quite as whole as Fountain's Abbey but is still gorgeous, hosts a festival every year and they get big bands and singers in over the weekend and everyone parties while the sun goes down. It's gorgeous and such a fun and amazing experience. If you're ever here in the summer you should defo try to get to it.

    My family is obsessed with the Uhtred books by Bernard Cornwell too and really enjoyed The Last Kingdom. A shame it only ran for two seasons. Bamburgh Castle as it stands now is not Saxon. But they are currently excavating the Saxon remains of a castle which would have been around in Uhtred's day and that site, looming on a great rock above the sea, is fabulous. I'm staying in the castle in an apartment that they rent out there this summer. Really good vlogs, you guys.

    These monasteries are massive, I would equate them to universities educating the children of nobility since it seems that they require great wealth to build so it makes sense that people would want to destroy them. The reformation period also had a lot to do with tiding your way into heaven. But these monasteries were pivotal in creating a have versus have nots scenario, by whom monks gave access to knowledge to. But not to ramble on or cause a debate, Grendel was a man not a monster that is why he was able to confide in the dragon. There is a secondary book aptly titled Grendel which coincides greatly with Beowulf.

    those cathedrals were that size as a symbol of fear and power of the Normans and were built on the blood of the people.

    • @CountScarlioni
      @CountScarlioni 6 років тому

      Yes, yes they were.
      Especially Durham, which had been the site of a huge Northumbrian revolt early in William I's reign. The Cathedral and castle complex were a grand statement of Norman authority, and by taking control of Northumbria's holy relics it was a not so subtle message to the people that they had new overlords.
      The liberal use of stone, an expensive material little employed by the Anglo-Saxons also carried a certain implication. Stone was the material used to build houses of God, it was the the material of the Romans and the mother church. A power that built in stone was by implication was building in God's name. An implication not lost on master or serf.
      But whatever their original intentions, today they are just another part of the tapestry of our national story.
      900 years later these structures have lost none of their awe-inspiring impact.
