Thanks Matt, now I don't have to say it. But in their defense they ARE too young to know and its hard to know how something is pronounced by the way its spelled. I should know, my last name was butchered so bad until Alanis Morissette got popular. Now it still surprises me when someone gets it right, lol. When talking on the phone to someone that I have to give my name to I still spell it out for them.

Three separate phone calls between him and the operator. He’s calling from a pay phone “you can keep the dime”. This song always reminds me how simple times were and the price of a phone call back then. I had my boys listen to this song and I walked them through its meaning. I love Jim Croce! One of the greats! The reason I picked up a guitar to learn to play!
Songs like this one and Lenny Williams song ‘Cause I Love You -“I watched Televison til Television went off”. Remind us of so much and brings back so many memories. How when programming would end with the National anthem and a montage and then the multi-colored screen ending that days television programming. I miss the simpler times sometimes. It was inspired by his time in the National Guard. He was standing in the rain, lining up at a payphone. As he waited, he heard all the ‘Dear John’ stories of the other guys as they lined up for their three-minute phone call. Jim Croce’s “Operator” might sound dated to some. It mentions a phone operator, payphones and a matchbook, which are not things that we really use that much these days. But the sentiment is the same as today. Croce is thinking about dialing up an ex. He found out his ex is dating his ex-best-friend. His roller-coaster of emotions is similar to what any of us today would experience. As he talks to the operator, he begins to tear up remembering the love that they once had. Midway through the call he begins to get second thoughts. What is he going to say to her anyways that doesn’t sound desperate? In the end he decides against it. He doesn’t call her.
Its important to also pay respects to another young man that died in that airplane crash. In many ways, "Jim Croce" was essentially a duo: Maury Muehleisen was the super talented lead guitarist, songwriter, and harmony vocalist - that interplay with Jim & Maury added so much magic to the songs and the sound, which is why Maury was integral to Jim's success and prominently shared the stage with Jim. May they both rest easy.

Definitely, "I Got a Name" is still one of my all time favorites. It made me feel like it was okay to be me even if who I was definitely uncool and unpopular. Being a teenager is hard. Still love it today.

Jim "Crow-chee" was a gifted singer-songwriter. Gone too soon. RIP Jim.
You are right about the era. I took my youngest to a music shop years ago to get his first acoustic guitar and the sales guy was an experienced player, so he was playing licks from classic rock song after classic rock song. Suddenly he stopped and looked at my son and said, "Unfortunately for you, all of the good music has already been done". I had to laugh - but when you think about it......

He was only 30 when he was killed in a plane crash in 1974. He was awesome. You are right, he was a master storyteller. He could make you laugh (Rapid Roy (That Stock Car Boy). Roller Derby Queen, Working At The Car Wash Blues) He could make you cry (Operator, Photographs And Memories). He could make you feel nostalgic (I've Got A Name, New York's Not My Home). He could make you feel down on love (Lover's Cross), he could make you want to be in love (I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song). He could make you feel any emotion with his songs!

One of my favorites by him. He was in the National Guard for awhile and some of his best tunes were influenced by people he met and experiences from that time. "Bad Bad LeRoy Brown" was based off of one of his fellow Guardsmen and Operator sounds like more than a few conversations I couldn't help but overhear waiting for my turn at one of the phone banks during my own time in the Army in Germany. My all time favorite from Jim is "Working At the Car Wash Blues"...funniest song he ever wrote! ua-cam.com/video/1SULVCWbFUI/v-deo.html

I was in 8th grade algebra class when someone told me Jim Croce died in a plane crash. I was heartbroken. I still am every time I hear him. How much music we never got to hear from him. But how much we do have! This is songwriting perfection. "Have to Say I Love You in a Song" next, please. 🤗

The end…just wow! You see that he is just calling so he can have the human contact of the operator. “No one there I really wanted to talk to.” The loneliness crushes me every time and I’ve listened to this song hundreds of times.

What Mel said about feeling good even though it's a song about feeling sad... yeah, because it's real... Real life has ups and downs, and we've all had them. A song about the downs can make you think about the ups and feel happy for good times... Same reason a happy song can make a sad person cry, but in reverse.

A musician in a similar vein is RODRIGUEZ. " COLD FACT " AND " COMING FROM REALITY " are two albums he is famous for.
Some of you will be aware that a Documentary was made about RODRIGUEZ after he was found working on a building site.
In regards to JIM CROCE, he would be one of the most lamented musicians of all time.
The sadness and tragedy of his death, makes me choke with emotions and hold back the tears.
In 1973, when the News came through on Australian media that he had died in a plane crash, I was only 12 yrs old.
Jim had only just broken through into the Commercial World of Music.
His Hit songs were being played on 2SM radio in Sydney.
The word that Lex is looking for is ' engaging '
Jim's voice and story telling was very engaging.

That was so beautiful, I love his music. His name is pronounced Jim Crow - Chee. My favorite is Time in a Bottle. It is a tear jerker but so poignant being that he died so young in a plane crash right at the height of is fame. "I Got a Name" is also another favorite. This is a great rabbit hole.

Y’all are pretty young folk and to put the essence of the time this song was written in...there were no cell phones, but we had pay phones and in trading phone numbers we would write them on matchbooks.Great song and it’s impact on music of those times was true to its time...although love never changes,it still brings us joy and sometimes breaks our hearts.
