Why dont you just do it? When I was 16 I pulled out a pocket knife, a piece of wood, and just did it! Now I'm in my mid 60's and STILL at it still as a hobby. I would suggest the violin making book by HS Wake to get started. Starting with violins is cheaper than cellos and basses. All instruments use the same techniques. I URGE you to get on internet right now and buy the book and just do it. Its cheap to do also, remember, I made my first 30 instruments with nothing more than a few knives and chisels, one can get the specific tools one at a time, and even then, they are not expensive. The dial depth gauge and bending iron are the most expensive, about $100 to $200. You can get carving chisels from harbor freight right now for less than $15 and be on your way to being a maker. DO IT! You CAN do it! So DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The advantage now which we didnt have back then is youtube and plenty of vids on instrument making... Old turds like me learned the hard way. Hey, I wanted a concert harp, and never even seen a harp in real life. I couldnt afford the $20,000+ cost either.... so I built two! I wanted a steel guitar... once again, too expensive, I built 2. Now I want an electric contral upright bass, too expensive, about $1800. I just got all the hardware in to build one, about $200 in supplies. Once I start carving, five days later, I WILL have one! I've heard so many say "I wish I could...." and I tell them, just do it!!! Failure is ok, so long as you dont let it be the final results! DO IT!!!

I'm a violin maker and I also build concert harps, steel guitars, and guitars. I just got in all the hardware to build me an electric contra upright bass, very similar to the one sitting there in your video when the guy is playing. All I have to do is buy wood and start carving. I figure that it will be a 5 day project if even that long. I takes me 5 days to do a violin from start to finish, other than the varnishing. You did a wonderful job building your bass, thumbs up. Never mind the 11 thumbs downs, they are all mental midgets!

BTW I have NEVER sold an instrument yet. I give mine to kids who have the potential to be great players. I dont charge for repair work for kids instruments either. I only charge for parts. I NEVER want a kid to do without because they cant afford me! However, for professional players, I charge a fortune, big money! One of my favorite things is when a kid comes in with a bow that needs to be re-haired. I make THEM do it. I show them step by step. Then 30 minutes later good old bow is ready to go again! Its fun! I do this to get them in to instrument making and repair! We are a special and very limited highly talented craftsmen. I think all of us do it more for the joy of creating than making the money!!! Beautiful bass but how come you don't use shellac for a finish and don't people give you a hard time because you don't french polish as is traditional.
Thank you! All professional fine bowed string instruments use an oil varnish. Shellac varnish is only sometimes used on student string instruments. BUT we do french polish out the oil varnish. So in that last stage, the french polish does have shellac in it.

Hello, Such a beautiful bass. I have a 1/4 size contrabass. Recently during transportation the neck came off clean without breaking. There are no contrabass repair person where I live. could you please answer one question. Do you know what is distance between the neck and the body at the highest point of the neck for a 1/4 size contrabass? Thank you.
I am sorry that happened! That specific answer depends on several instrument measurement factors. Email us at info@krutzstrings.com and we can better answer that question in detail. But in general, if the neck had already been set in the bass body, then once you clean off the old glue from the neck heel and mortise the neck can be glued back into the same place, for the same angle and height, as the neck was before it came out.
