@@jeffreywise4807 I have heard many different theories about why they are those names... and I have also heard people say they're just random names. So.... I wouldn't worry about "why" they have those names... unless you can come up with some reason that helps you remember which is which based on their names... haha :)
@@jeffreywise4807 My understanding is that the "harmonic minor" gets its name because altering note #7 to create a leading tone turns the dominant chord into a major triad, and helps the dominant harmony create the intended leading tension toward the tonic. In other words, use of the raised 7th allows a similar dominant-tonic relationship to the one we have in major keys. Gracie demonstrates this well at 14:22 - 18:10 and it is what all the spelling of diatonic chords was leading up to. The term "melodic" for the other variation comes because it's most useful in creating natural-sounding melodic lines, using tones that seem to lead upward for upward moving passages, and returning to the unaltered tones for passages leading down. It helps the melody create uplift when called for, and a downward "minor" feeling when called for. Shorter answer: The reason for the raised 7th is for harmonic usage of the dominant chore. The reason for the raised 6 and 7 in the melodic minor scale is smooth melodic intervals when gong upward or downward. So the names reflect the reasons the variations were devised.

You have become my go to in terms of music theory. I am so incredibly impressed and grateful for with your great teaching skills . I am presently a student at the Victoria Conservatory of Music in BC, Canada and I must admit, I am learning much faster and more profoundly with your youtube channel. As a 64 year old woman trying to finally learn to read and write music, this journey is quite challenging. I am a autodidacte composing with a computer and DAW. Thank you! Thank you!
Excellent. After a lifetime of playing music solely by ear, I am making an effort to actually understand theory. This one video has filled in so many gaps, what a diminished chord is, how an augmented chord is constructed and, of course the main points of this lesson. The last part with the vamping makes me want to get a keyboard (I'm a guitarist/vocalist) and finally pick up piano skills. You are an *outstanding* teacher!
What makes the guitar so difficult of an instrument to study music theory on is that you have to "FIND" the damn chords after you know what they are. For example - there are (and I can prove it) at least 16 different ways to play a single half diminished chords on the guitar somewhere on the neck. On the piano? Counting inversions - 4. So one commit an enormous number of chords to memory in order to be able to improvise.
@@lawrencemcconnell8962 very true, but that's why I think imo that learning theory, and then understanding how intervals are laid out across the fretboard, is extremely helpful in being able to improvise and arrange chords in new ways, instead of just memorizing patterns/shapes, which is what most guitar players do. I mean, memorizing patterns/shapes is fine too, but I think it needs to be connected in your head to the "why" it exists, and working through it over and over again will lead to better memorization than just try to memorize what someone else has already worked out.
Gracie, you are nominated (and thereby winning) the Yngwie J Malmsteen award of excellence for this explanation. Incredibly well laid out and so understandable. Well done.
Wonderful lesson, Gracie! The 3 minor scales and their respective diatonic chords are typically presented as a memorization exercise, without the rationale behind them. The context you provided is extremely helpful, as is hearing the 2 chord vamps and the selected diatonic chords played over the different minor scales. Bravo!
Ms Gracie, this is just a brilliant unwrapping of minors. Every time you teach, i learn so much. The combination of the quality of your teaching content coupled with your teaching style that makes this stuff so accessible and understandable....well....its like a perfect scale and chord combination. Thank you so much.
Very nice and easy explained, makes remembering the diatonic chords of the minor scale ridiculously easy. But I wonder , if you could do the same for the Hungarian minor, Neapolitan minor and pentatonic minor scales, especially the last one cause I can't seem to use your system to derive their chords from them
Epiphany.... I'm self taught and somehow I established much of this myself just trying write progession for melodies and filling out accompaniment. This makes things crystal clear for me. Thank you my lady.🙏

I found this by googling "why are there 2 different minor scales" and now you're telling me there's actually 3? 😒 Anyway, your videos are great. You have a gift for teaching. Kudos!
Me, having no idea how chords work. Stumble upon this, video, and now I know how scales and chords work with each other. I play guitar, not piano but this is the best thing I’ve ever seen on theory and I’ve been watching a lot of videos the last couple of months.
Gracie, you are a natural teacher. Patient and one can tell you know your subject, but more importantly your passion and love of what you are doing shine throughout your presentation.🙏 Bravo!
One year later. Just caught the bus. Not to late. I’ve subscribed for music theory lessons. Thank you so much Gracie. I’ve never been able to get out of the box. That being, stuck in the three chord theory and major scale. With your tuition, the box will be something like the tonic, (me old hangout). But still an important begining. That diminished turns me on. I like piano. It’s all laid out in front of me. Much respect to. Much love❤
Thanks for explaining and drawing it out on your white board! That actually made sense of a lot of murkiness for me. Trying to make sense of this as an untrained guitar player has been confusing but you've removed a lot of the fog! You're an excellent teacher, Gracie! 👍
I've started relearning how to play the guitar about 3 years ago due to me losing the ability to play with my fretting hand 8 years ago. I woke up one day and found out my muscle memory (for the hand) was gone. Brain problem. So after a few years of trying to play hoping everything would come back I decided to relearn how to play and also incorporate learning music theory. I'm glad I ran across this video yesterday and just wanted to let you know how appreciative I am for this lesson. I enjoyed it! I would complement you more but it looks like others' comments have done so already. Anyway, Thanks again😀😀😀

Beautifully presented! Especially towards the end when improvising on the piano - I wish I'd been taught in this way as a kid instead of going straight to reading music - I feel that it's the understanding "why" notes sound good together is what makes you a better musician. Thank you!!

🔥🔥🔥 The content after the first 28 (or so) minutes, and the two chord vamp, are what made this video extra special for me. So often we learn theory without practical exercises and application. The fact that we can “hang out with a scale” over a chord, improvise, improve our ears and make beautiful music… gold 🍯🎶😁giving thanks💫
Yay so glad you enjoyed that! Yes you can improvise over just 1 chord forever! But 2 chord vamps are so fun! Great fun way to practice that is manageable yet still opens endless possibilities
Hi Gracie, I’ve been playing guitar for, wow 48 years, my keyboard, sits in my bedroom, gathering dust, but mainly clothes that are just draped over it. I have always stayed away from the minor scales, I just didn’t get what the books were telling me, anyway to cut a long story short, I’m not only playing these scales on my guitar, and really enjoying the exploration of new ideas, I’ve also started playing the keyboard again, and comping. You have given new life to an aging guy. Thank you so much Gracie!
I'm so glad 'Music Theory' or western Music theory no longer is the giant stamp on what you can do. I remember reading so many articles about the Classical professionals despising The Beatles because they were breaking so many rules yet now we all live in the mainstream they spearheaded and created. They also saved the classical world from the impasse that happened when nobody wanted to listen to classical music any more as they showed established tonal music still had everything to offer. It's important to learn theory but when creating your own music try things out and see where it can take you.
I think guys from The Beatles saw the second half of her video from the past, and I think you should do the same to see how well guys from The Beatles used exactly the same Music Theory
Music theory is a strange thing; for example when Ms Gracie played the G and suggested it wanted to resolve to A.... did you really feel that or did you just agree. Theory suggests there is a science to music but fundamentally it is subjective and cultural. Theory is good for those who want to get a job in music but it does not make intuitive innovators like The Beatles
Ummmm the Beatles were just copying the devices used by black people pioneering on rock and roll and at best they were mixing it up with a little "old world" (European) approach They just got more attention from the media because they were white, like the beach boys
@@fieldofsky3632 George Martin helped write and arrange a lot of The Beatle’s songs and he was extensively trained in music theory. So to say the Beatles did not use any music theory when they wrote their music is not entirely correct
Bru... You can do whatever you want with music. But if you want people to actually enjoy listening to it then your going to need "music theory". There are so many videos explaining how the Beatles use music theory. The idea that they just randomly played chords and it magically sounded good is a myth. If it sounds good, then it's using music theory.

this was such a valuable lesson. it felt so authentic and comprehendible, and most youtube lessons are not nearly this helpful and practical. thank you!
I really just use Harmonic and Melodic minor for bits and pieces, I love them. I like the diminished 7th, I like to mess with the Altered scale you get from melodic minor. Phrygian dominant, 5 of harmonic is awesome, Dorian#4 is fun. It’s all good. There’s so much to explore it’s almost overwhelming
Hi Gracie ! OMG my head exploded at 27:00 !! You make music theory as easy to understand as first grade math !! It also sounds great to flatten the 'D' note when playing the scale descending so that the Db is a leading tone to the 'C' note. BTW, I listened to your video Over The Rainbow with Rotem Sivan Trio (2017). It was over the top !! Cheers :))
I've taken music lessons, plus "music theory" in college. Why didn't anyone teach me this basic stuff 50 years ago? I'm not kidding about the 50 years.
Great lesson! I'm familiar with how these concepts work, but I like to get a refresher on the basics every now and then. This is probably the most clear and concise music theory lesson I've come across on UA-cam. You deserve more subs.
You ain't my mom but you relate her. Neither she was pious nor am i, yet we both played church organ because we could. She taught me via the pentatonic (black) keys as they are so tactile. Thank you for teaching us all. To go on, along with my classical and liturgical training, as i suspect yours, i had jazz training. Each taunted me to learn and break every rule, as i suspect you.
This lesson is like a large Thanksgiving meal. Afterwards, you know three things - 1) There's going to be a lot of food 2) You ARE going to over eat 3) You're going to be really really full afterwards
I actually understood how to practice scales by viewing this video- awesome. Would you be able to explain modulation from one key to another in one of your upcoming videos?
My favorite style of teaching. State the problem: "we need a strong resolve in a minor scale". And describe approaches to solve the issue. It has so much value comparing to blunt information about how to construct given scales.
Comparative explanation of three minor scales was very interesting. One observation if the 3rd note of any major scale is flattened it becomes a melodic minor scale of that key is'it?
I stopped for red hair, and curiosity. Kept watching because she sounded confident, and looked adorable. Then I stayed and subbed, because I actually LEARNED something new!!! I know a LOT of theory, but this was fascinating.
This is literally gotta be one a the best teachers ever . A lot of ppl will be like learn this learn that . An never show examples or notes . I adore this teacher a lot
Excellent class. No one has ever explained it to me so clearly. I just subscribed. Someone told me that the harmonic minor was "banned" because it sounds arabic and that's why the natural one was "invented." Personally I like harmonic much more than natural or melodic.
Thanks. I went back to review the ideas and realize that you taught me lots about music theory. Merci beaucop. Hope you're doing well in your new apartment.

Bravo!
Oh I'm so glad to hear that! Thank you so much :)
Clearest explanation of music ever.
Learning piano at 70 plus years old. You finally explained the rationale behind the 3 minor scales. Thanks. And well done.
Ms Gracie, this is just a brilliant unwrapping of minors. Every time you teach, i learn so much. The combination of the quality of your teaching content coupled with your teaching style that makes this stuff so accessible and understandable....well....its like a perfect scale and chord combination. Thank you so much.
Aww thank you Josh.. what a lovely comment and compliment! I greatly appreciate your kind words
Very nice and easy explained, makes remembering the diatonic chords of the minor scale ridiculously easy. But I wonder , if you could do the same for the Hungarian minor, Neapolitan minor and pentatonic minor scales, especially the last one cause I can't seem to use your system to derive their chords from them
Finally I understand. Having the knowledge is one thing, the art of teaching is another. You definitely have the gift of teaching. Thank You ❤❤❤
I appreciate that!
Epiphany.... I'm self taught and somehow I established much of this myself just trying write progession for melodies and filling out accompaniment. This makes things crystal clear for me. Thank you my lady.🙏
Namaskaar.Excellent explanation Minor chords& related chords .No words to appreciate.God bless you.I am 63 yr old beginner for keyboard.Chord lessons looks complicated but, after watching your easily explained videos it's very easy to understand basics .Thank you once again
i just kinda accepted that there were different varieties of the minor scale for years and have never properly understood why, or how they fit into modal framework, until now. thankyou so much!
You're very welcome. Thanks so much for the nice comment! :)
I'm so pleased that you explained the underlying reasons why these scales and chords are the way that they are. Finally, after many years, I might just be able to remember this stuff!
Yay I hope so! Thank you so much :)
Better yet, when you understand things you don't have to waste mental energy and space to remember it. You just know it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks
Thank you so much!!!
Thanks to the modern technology there are a lot of lessons which are available on internet nowadays but you deserve a big 'Thank'. The methodology adopted by you is no doubt praiseworthy and really a boon to the lone learner like me in my sixties. May God bless you.
H.M. Kohale, Nagpur (India)
Thank you so much!! I am so honored by your kind words. I really appreciate it.
Gracie. Where were you in 1969, when I started learning music theory? You really are a natural teacher. Thankyou.
Thank you!!
Excellent teacher quality, you are very talented in communication! So easy to follow and retain information from this video. Thank you.😮
I had not come across a clear explanation of Harmonic, melodic, and natural minor scales. I struggled to understand them. This is so clear and well explained! Praise God! And thank you Gracie!

Gracie
You are amazing
I have years of struggle and never understood
The way you explain made me realise Music is an art
God bless
Aww thank you so much! you are too kind! much appreciated
One of the clearest presentations of what the leading tone means and the derivation of the chords in the minor scales that I have ever been exposed to. Keep up the good work. I'm looking forward to watching more videos produced by you. Claude
I don’t know how I stumbled on this video on UA-cam but I’m sure happy I did. Thank you! You are a Brilliant teacher, it is your gift 🙂
Thank you so much!! I’m happy you stumbled on it too! :)
I found this by googling "why are there 2 different minor scales" and now you're telling me there's actually 3? 😒
Anyway, your videos are great. You have a gift for teaching. Kudos!
Thank you so much!
SELF TAUGHT and THIS is GOLD!!!!! You are amazing teacher!!!!!! Blessings to you!!!
Much love❤
What a fabulous piece of tuition Gracie! So well explained and it all makes perfect sense! All thanks to you. Much love x
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you like it :)
As a kid i could never get my head wrapped around music theory, at 55 im finally getting it! 😁👍
Thanks for explaining and drawing it out on your white board! That actually made sense of a lot of murkiness for me. Trying to make sense of this as an untrained guitar player has been confusing but you've removed a lot of the fog! You're an excellent teacher, Gracie! 👍
That is wonderful to hear!! Thank you so much
I've started relearning how to play the guitar about 3 years ago due to me losing the ability to play with my fretting hand 8 years ago.
Grace, you are such an amazing teacher. I started learning the piano via UA-cam 5 months ago but I find music theory fascinating because of you.
I have just recently stumbled onto your channel. I am a guitar player and have struggled learning theory for years. Your teaching style is amazing. I have learned so much!
Theory is what the uninspired use to decipher the work of genius.
Wow... finally, music theory without stress...
Bass player of 35 years, beating myself up trying to learn harmony from other bass related tutorials. The presentation is chilled and delightful. Thank you Gracie!
Gracie, you are such an excellent teacher ❤️, I can't tell you how much you've improved my music creation with your videos and your help of understanding music theory. I could watch you all day, truly appreciate you. Keep up the GREAT work.🐐😎🔥💯
nice to hear see someone on you tube who is not blood shouting! thank you! great lesson!
Another amazing video by the best music educator on UA-cam! Thanks so much for making these, it means a lot to people! Keep up the great work
You’re very welcome! Thank you so much for this nice comment!!!
I've been playing guitar for almost 40 years and if I had people like you explaining things I would have comprehended theory much earlier. Fantastic work, thank you so much. Better late than never, I guess? 😅
Beautifully presented! Especially towards the end when improvising on the piano - I wish I'd been taught in this way as a kid instead of going straight to reading music - I feel that it's the understanding "why" notes sound good together is what makes you a better musician. Thank you!!
Gracie is the type of musical teacher that is basically saying hey you! yes you! the one who always wanted to write songs and learn how to play that instrument but never really learned how to read music or never really learned all of the skills in Scales but always had the desire yes ! you I'm talking to you get over here by the time I'm finished with you you're going to be the musician that you've always wanted to be!
@@GracieTerzian So right you are. Miles Davis and The Grateful Dead literally made careers out of doing that!

Ummmm the Beatles were just copying the devices used by black people pioneering on rock and roll and at best they were mixing it up with a little "old world" (European) approach
They just got more attention from the media because they were white, like the beach boys
I love the sound of the baby in the background. I was enjoying very much the lesson, so clear and complete, but when I heard that, that pulled me off the chair! I'm flattered by your cool blood and mind sharpness. I admire you very much. Thank you so much! Chapeau, from the deep of my heart!
this was such a valuable lesson. it felt so authentic and comprehendible, and most youtube lessons are not nearly this helpful and practical. thank you!
Aww that makes me so happy to hear! Thank you so much!!
I keep watching this over and over but I always fall asleep a few minutes in! 😂
I really just use Harmonic and Melodic minor for bits and pieces, I love them. I like the diminished 7th, I like to mess with the Altered scale you get from melodic minor. Phrygian dominant, 5 of harmonic is awesome, Dorian#4 is fun. It’s all good. There’s so much to explore it’s almost overwhelming
yes it can feel overwhelming because there is so much! keep enjoying what you're playing -- and have fun :)
Merci for this. After one month, I've been looking for answers and this was a great analysis.
Cheers :))
Ahh that's cool! (flattening of the D when descending). Thank you so much!!! And so glad you like our Over The Rainbow :)
Wow, you are one amazing teacher. Now I understand why there are three
Minor scales and the functions.
I've taken music lessons, plus "music theory" in college. Why didn't anyone teach me this basic stuff 50 years ago? I'm not kidding about the 50 years.
Not sure, but they should have! :) it’s never too late though!
I should add, you present yourself with class, and for this I take off my hat to you. Decency is rare today.
Afterwards, you know three things -
1) There's going to be a lot of food
2) You ARE going to over eat
3) You're going to be really really full afterwards
Hahahaha I love this comment. Thank you!!!!!
Love Love love. Thank you very much for explaining everything so nice and clear.
Thank you Grace! PS cool name :)
Thanks!
Thank you so much!!
Thank you for explaining this theory. I have subscribed to your channel and absolutely love this. Thanks again!
Thank you so much Ronnie!
I never understood this till now, such a work of clarity.
So glad to hear that Jones!
Comparative explanation of three minor scales was very interesting. One observation if the 3rd note of any major scale is flattened it becomes a melodic minor scale of that key is'it?
Yes that is right
And flatting the 6th aa well gives you the harmonic minor scale.
Thnkyou madam .I realized it later but think that it is to late to inform you sorry
Again thankyou for your kind information
.
I stopped for red hair, and curiosity. Kept watching because she sounded confident, and looked adorable. Then I stayed and subbed, because I actually LEARNED something new!!! I know a LOT of theory, but this was fascinating.
bruh that little improv piece at the end is so sick!!
i loved it!
amazing video!
I am not a well educated musician. I am composing some melodies with the guitar and I found your teaching very helpful 🙏
This is literally gotta be one a the best teachers ever . A lot of ppl will be like learn this learn that . An never show examples or notes . I adore this teacher a lot
This helped me immensely. My power can no longer be contained.
You were born to teach music.
These scales are awesome. They sound so pretty. This is something you hear in the movies. Thank you for the eye opening lesson.
She works hard for the money!! Patience is a virtue and I thank you.
You are the best pianist teacher I ever seen
Best explanation for the reasons why we have three minor scales. Thanks.
Amazingly clear explanation. I have never understood the logic behind the minor scales. Now I do. You're a great teacher!
Excellent class.
No one has ever explained it to me so clearly. I just subscribed.
Someone told me that the harmonic minor was "banned" because it sounds arabic and that's why the natural one was "invented." Personally I like harmonic much more than natural or melodic.
Gracie is an excellent teacher.....it took me three videos to realize she was a pianist.....cause it all makes sense for Guitar too....lol.
Thanks. I went back to review the ideas and realize that you taught me lots about music theory.
Merci beaucop. Hope you're doing well in your new apartment.
Thank you for your calm, patient and pedagogical teaching as for your beautiful melodies.
You are so sweet, thank you!!
You are a great teacher. Awesome lesson, and you seem to be a very nice person too. thank you
