Its like turning a lamp on in a dark room. Clear and concise. Many thanks for your generosity Gracie.
This is the first time in my 39 years of studying and learning where anyone has explained clearly and logically why we use the melodic minor ascending and the natural minor when descending i.e. as the leading tone is only meaningful when approached from below. Kudos to you Gracie
I was about to say the same thing. Couldn't agree more.
Agreed, this was very well explained.
Thank you so much!!!! :) :) :) I'm so happy to hear this.
Rules are stupid, and impede true creative freedom.
@@ANOLDMASTERJUKZ Thank you for that most insightful observation.
"Scales are just melodies." You are gifted.
I admire your teaching style. You can present a dry topic with precision and eloquence. There is no noise in my head because you teach with so much clarity. I'll be coming back.
I learned music theory at a very young age and none of it really meant anything to me. It is amazing that such talented teachers like Gracie can make such a difference some 60 years later. I'll also add that I am so impressed with the commenters here--you people are angels. Someone makes a negative comment and what I see in the responses is tolerance and patience. God bless you all.
Yes the people here are very kind! It’s a nice community! :) thank you so much for your sweet comment - it really means a lot to hear!
AWESOME
"If you can't explain something simply, you don't understand it well enough". Seems like Gracie understands it very well. Love the logical approach as a first time viewer, and I will definitely be back for more.
My thoughts exactly! The methodical, logical progression of her explanations make stuff so clear! This was fabulous! One question though; where do the names “melodic”and “harmonic”
minor cone from?
Very clear lesson, thank you ! You're a very good teacher. Learning guitar , I better understood scales and improvisation over chords from you. It looks scales and modes are directly linked, Aeolian mode being Natural minor scale, Dorian being Harmonic and Mixolydian being Melodic. Correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks.
@@jeffreywise4807 I have heard many different theories about why they are those names... and I have also heard people say they're just random names. So.... I wouldn't worry about "why" they have those names... unless you can come up with some reason that helps you remember which is which based on their names... haha :)
@@jeffreywise4807 My understanding is that the "harmonic minor" gets its name because altering note #7 to create a leading tone turns the dominant chord into a major triad, and helps the dominant harmony create the intended leading tension toward the tonic. In other words, use of the raised 7th allows a similar dominant-tonic relationship to the one we have in major keys. Gracie demonstrates this well at 14:22 - 18:10 and it is what all the spelling of diatonic chords was leading up to.
The term "melodic" for the other variation comes because it's most useful in creating natural-sounding melodic lines, using tones that seem to lead upward for upward moving passages, and returning to the unaltered tones for passages leading down. It helps the melody create uplift when called for, and a downward "minor" feeling when called for.
Shorter answer: The reason for the raised 7th is for harmonic usage of the dominant chore. The reason for the raised 6 and 7 in the melodic minor scale is smooth melodic intervals when gong upward or downward. So the names reflect the reasons the variations were devised.
@@Frodohotep Very helpful explanations. Thank you.
I was a teacher for 34 years and I have never seen such clear presentation. Thank you for making these topics so interesting and clear.
My teachers, although talented musicians signally failed to impart their knowledge to me. Same with the foreign language teachers. I'm so impressed with this if a little late to the party! [If you want to learn a language try Elisabeth Smith's 'Instant' series for starters].
My teachers, while untalented, were efficient knowledge-imparters !
Gracie is the type of musical teacher that is basically saying hey you! yes you! the one who always wanted to write songs and learn how to play that instrument but never really learned how to read music or never really learned all of the skills in Scales but always had the desire yes ! you I'm talking to you get over here by the time I'm finished with you you're going to be the musician that you've always wanted to be!
Doggone it Gracie! Where were you 60 yrs ago when I started trying to learn music? Oh yeah, you weren't born yet. I loved this lesson! You really have a wonderful way of instructing music. I can't thank you enough for finally teaching this ole boy. I love all your videos
Aww thank you James!! :) You put a smile on my face!
Absolutely brilliant. I have spent 50 years, and a lot of trying to find out in books, trying to understand what you've just explained. My phobia is lifted! Thank you so much.
Aw thank you so much! I’m so glad you found this helpful! ❤️
When you 'read' those books, you shouldn't have "hopped over" them, "like a bunny rabbit".
I learnt more in this 42 minute lesson than 20 years of books. Without doubt the best teacher I have ever seen. Thanks for sharing your gift.
My mother taught me all of this, that was almost 60 years ago, your videos are a wonderful refresher course for me. I have forgotten so much over the years.Thank you Gracie I love your approach.

This lesson is like a large Thanksgiving meal. Afterwards, you know three things -
1) There's going to be a lot of food
2) You ARE going to over eat
3) You're going to be really really full afterwards
Hahahaha I love this comment. Thank you!!!!!
You have just encouraged me to dust off my keyboard, much to my wife's annoyance, no I promise to use headphones and not attempt singing :) You are a very talented music teacher, thank you.
I found this by googling "why are there 2 different minor scales" and now you're telling me there's actually 3? 😒
Anyway, your videos are great. You have a gift for teaching. Kudos!
Thank you so much!
If only my piano teacher explained theory like you. Scales and theory was pure torture for me. You, Gracie have such a great way of explaining all this. After 30 some odd years absence from playing piano, I have once again gone back to it but this time I enjoy doing scales because I’m beginning to see the link of where all this is going and how it’ll help me begin to understand to not only play already written music, but to start improvising as well. Thank you 😊
Aw thank you so much! I am so happy to hear you find my videos helpful. Best of luck on your continued musical journey, and thank you for the nice comment!
The most useful 40 minutes of my musical life. Well done.
As a kid i could never get my head wrapped around music theory, at 55 im finally getting it! 😁👍
I’ve been playing guitar for 15 years and was never taught how to create chords like this in any mode. I finally understand how modes work with just this video on minor scales
Gracie, you are nominated (and thereby winning) the Yngwie J Malmsteen award of excellence for this explanation. Incredibly well laid out and so understandable. Well done.
LOL YJM?! That's perfect since The Yngster isn't exactly known for his excellence of his explanations due to his Bleepin' Fury!
You have become my go to in terms of music theory. I am so incredibly impressed and grateful for with your great teaching skills . I am presently a student at the Victoria Conservatory of Music in BC, Canada and I must admit, I am learning much faster and more profoundly with your youtube channel. As a 64 year old woman trying to finally learn to read and write music, this journey is quite challenging. I am a autodidacte composing with a computer and DAW. Thank you! Thank you!
One year later. Just caught the bus. Not to late. I’ve subscribed for music theory lessons. Thank you so much Gracie. I’ve never been able to get out of the box. That being, stuck in the three chord theory and major scale. With your tuition, the box will be something like the tonic, (me old hangout). But still an important begining. That diminished turns me on. I like piano. It’s all laid out in front of me. Much respect to. Much love❤
I've taken music lessons, plus "music theory" in college. Why didn't anyone teach me this basic stuff 50 years ago? I'm not kidding about the 50 years.
Not sure, but they should have! :) it’s never too late though!
After playing guitar for 50 years and avoiding theory utterly, I am now seeing the light, thanks to you, Gracie. I never thought I'd become a theory nerd, but this is what I now do for fun. Better late than never.
if you actually learned to play "at all" in the last 50 years and have any semblance of improvisational skill you haven't avoided theory, you've just pretended to...this is much like all the great, famous musicians who claim the same nonsense.if you know when to play major, minor, natural minor ,pentatonic etc but didn't know how to define them you understand basic theory.give yourself a little credit
@@trillrifaxegrindor4411 Fair point, Axegrindor. Yeah, I do know something. It just occurs to me that I could have been much better if I worked harder on the theory side - instead of constantly collecting more gear. Never too late, I hope.
Thank you Gracie. Having minored in music at a highly-selective university, I can say that you teach much better than my uni professors ever did.
You “minored”,lol.

This YT channel is the only music theory channel that speaks in a language I can understand. Thank you for making these great videos Ms Gracie!
Thank you so much!! That makes me so happy to hear!!!
@@GracieTerzian I agree....I've really understand so many things I have struggled in over 3 years.🙏😁 with just this one lesson I've gone from 20- almost 70%....you're amazing. Thank you.
Can you please also do a tutorial on which chords to play next in a song...I mean the sequence from one chord to another because in different songs it's different. Thank you..
This video is hot like fire. Greaaaat explanations. Loved all of this
Epiphany.... I'm self taught and somehow I established much of this myself just trying write progession for melodies and filling out accompaniment. This makes things crystal clear for me. Thank you my lady.🙏
I had not come across a clear explanation of Harmonic, melodic, and natural minor scales. I struggled to understand them. This is so clear and well explained! Praise God! And thank you Gracie!

Excellent. After a lifetime of playing music solely by ear, I am making an effort to actually understand theory. This one video has filled in so many gaps, what a diminished chord is, how an augmented chord is constructed and, of course the main points of this lesson. The last part with the vamping makes me want to get a keyboard (I'm a guitarist/vocalist) and finally pick up piano skills. You are an *outstanding* teacher!
Awww you are so kind! I'm so touched!
What makes the guitar so difficult of an instrument to study music theory on is that you have to "FIND" the damn chords after you know what they are. For example - there are (and I can prove it) at least 16 different ways to play a single half diminished chords on the guitar somewhere on the neck. On the piano? Counting inversions - 4. So one commit an enormous number of chords to memory in order to be able to improvise.
@@lawrencemcconnell8962 very true, but that's why I think imo that learning theory, and then understanding how intervals are laid out across the fretboard, is extremely helpful in being able to improvise and arrange chords in new ways, instead of just memorizing patterns/shapes, which is what most guitar players do. I mean, memorizing patterns/shapes is fine too, but I think it needs to be connected in your head to the "why" it exists, and working through it over and over again will lead to better memorization than just try to memorize what someone else has already worked out.
In other words you were just mostly playing chords to pop music.

Gracie, Thank you so much for taking time to explicate the intricacies and nuances of the Three Minor Scale in such a tasty and palatable way!! Whether one is a novice, intermediate, or advanced this cooking is edible for everyone! Wow... I was watching another video of someone who is a professor try to explain this and I was a little confused so I just searched, "The Three Minor Scales," and clicked on yours and man was it worth it! I thank my God and Saviour Jesus for helping me find this channel!! I took notes, played a long on the piano and have grown leaps and bounds in 42 minutes!!!!! So, thank you and God Bless you and your praxis through and through!! I'm learning piano for LogicProX; so I can produce my own music. I"m a guitar player by trade! I don't have much but I'm going to venmo you a small token of my appreciation! Wish I could give more...
Thanks again!!

Ms Gracie, this is just a brilliant unwrapping of minors. Every time you teach, i learn so much. The combination of the quality of your teaching content coupled with your teaching style that makes this stuff so accessible and understandable....well....its like a perfect scale and chord combination. Thank you so much.
Aww thank you Josh.. what a lovely comment and compliment! I greatly appreciate your kind words
Very nice and easy explained, makes remembering the diatonic chords of the minor scale ridiculously easy. But I wonder , if you could do the same for the Hungarian minor, Neapolitan minor and pentatonic minor scales, especially the last one cause I can't seem to use your system to derive their chords from them
Like the previous commenter, I am an elderly (acoustic) guitarist who struggled to work out harmonising the (major) scales, but once I did I found it so extremely helpful. (I actually worked them out on an excel spreadsheet!)
However, I have always struggled with the minor scales and their differences this young lady has explained them so well, showing the logic. Now to compose my Minor spreadsheets !!!
I'm very grateful to you Gracie, Thank you.
This helped me immensely. My power can no longer be contained.
Great lesson! I'm familiar with how these concepts work, but I like to get a refresher on the basics every now and then. This is probably the most clear and concise music theory lesson I've come across on UA-cam. You deserve more subs.
There were so many things that clicked into place in my guitar universe seeing this. Thank you so much.
Always hated solfeggio class in music school as a kid, "I'll just use my ears" I said, but this is actually nice. Puts into a system what I already hear.
I have a distinct memory of getting in an argument with a music theory person over the concept of “if it sounds good, it is good” and I love that you repeat it multiple times like it’s so simple and obvious.
I'm so glad 'Music Theory' or western Music theory no longer is the giant stamp on what you can do. I remember reading so many articles about the Classical professionals despising The Beatles because they were breaking so many rules yet now we all live in the mainstream they spearheaded and created. They also saved the classical world from the impasse that happened when nobody wanted to listen to classical music any more as they showed established tonal music still had everything to offer. It's important to learn theory but when creating your own music try things out and see where it can take you.
I think guys from The Beatles saw the second half of her video from the past, and I think you should do the same to see how well guys from The Beatles used exactly the same Music Theory
Music theory is a strange thing; for example when Ms Gracie played the G and suggested it wanted to resolve to A.... did you really feel that or did you just agree. Theory suggests there is a science to music but fundamentally it is subjective and cultural. Theory is good for those who want to get a job in music but it does not make intuitive innovators like The Beatles
Ummmm the Beatles were just copying the devices used by black people pioneering on rock and roll and at best they were mixing it up with a little "old world" (European) approach
They just got more attention from the media because they were white, like the beach boys
@@fieldofsky3632 George Martin helped write and arrange a lot of The Beatle’s songs and he was extensively trained in music theory. So to say the Beatles did not use any music theory when they wrote their music is not entirely correct
Bru... You can do whatever you want with music. But if you want people to actually enjoy listening to it then your going to need "music theory". There are so many videos explaining how the Beatles use music theory. The idea that they just randomly played chords and it magically sounded good is a myth. If it sounds good, then it's using music theory.
i just kinda accepted that there were different varieties of the minor scale for years and have never properly understood why, or how they fit into modal framework, until now. thankyou so much!
You're very welcome. Thanks so much for the nice comment! :)
I love the sound of the baby in the background. I was enjoying very much the lesson, so clear and complete, but when I heard that, that pulled me off the chair! I'm flattered by your cool blood and mind sharpness. I admire you very much. Thank you so much! Chapeau, from the deep of my heart!
Such a simple and clear explanation! Grateful to you and UA-cam in general. 🙌🏻
I'm so pleased that you explained the underlying reasons why these scales and chords are the way that they are. Finally, after many years, I might just be able to remember this stuff!
Yay I hope so! Thank you so much :)
Better yet, when you understand things you don't have to waste mental energy and space to remember it. You just know it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for explaining this theory. I have subscribed to your channel and absolutely love this. Thanks again!

Third time watching just as a review. I just took a quiz practice of AP Music Theory. Your whiteboard helped me get 15 out of 15. Merci.
Woohoo!! So happy to hear that :)
Another amazing music theory lesson! Thank you, Gracie!
Wonderful lesson, Gracie! The 3 minor scales and their respective diatonic chords are typically presented as a memorization exercise, without the rationale behind them. The context you provided is extremely helpful, as is hearing the 2 chord vamps and the selected diatonic chords played over the different minor scales. Bravo!
Oh I'm so glad to hear that! Thank you so much :)
Clearest explanation of music ever.
Love Love love. Thank you very much for explaining everything so nice and clear.
Thank you Grace! PS cool name :)
I keep watching this over and over but I always fall asleep a few minutes in! 😂

Grace, you are such an amazing teacher. I started learning the piano via UA-cam 5 months ago but I find music theory fascinating because of you.
Beautifully presented! Especially towards the end when improvising on the piano - I wish I'd been taught in this way as a kid instead of going straight to reading music - I feel that it's the understanding "why" notes sound good together is what makes you a better musician. Thank you!!

I've started relearning how to play the guitar about 3 years ago due to me losing the ability to play with my fretting hand 8 years ago. I woke up one day and found out my muscle memory (for the hand) was gone. Brain problem. So after a few years of trying to play hoping everything would come back I decided to relearn how to play and also incorporate learning music theory. I'm glad I ran across this video yesterday and just wanted to let you know how appreciative I am for this lesson. I enjoyed it! I would complement you more but it looks like others' comments have done so already. Anyway, Thanks again😀😀😀

Hi Gracie !
OMG my head exploded at 27:00 !!
You make music theory as easy to understand as first grade math !!
It also sounds great to flatten the 'D' note when playing the scale descending so that the Db is a leading tone to the 'C' note.
BTW, I listened to your video Over The Rainbow with Rotem Sivan Trio (2017).
It was over the top !!

Thank you so much!! I’m happy you stumbled on it too! :)
Thanks for explaining and drawing it out on your white board! That actually made sense of a lot of murkiness for me. Trying to make sense of this as an untrained guitar player has been confusing but you've removed a lot of the fog! You're an excellent teacher, Gracie! 👍
That is wonderful to hear!! Thank you so much
So clear, so nicely spoken and explained. Thank you very much!
Finally a channel that takes the time to explain all the little parts that help us join the dots. Been trying to learn theory from some of Rick Beatos videos but it does my head in as it’s too high a level.
🔥🔥🔥 The content after the first 28 (or so) minutes, and the two chord vamp, are what made this video extra special for me. So often we learn theory without practical exercises and application. The fact that we can “hang out with a scale” over a chord, improvise, improve our ears and make beautiful music… gold 🍯🎶😁giving thanks💫
Yay so glad you enjoyed that! Yes you can improvise over just 1 chord forever! But 2 chord vamps are so fun! Great fun way to practice that is manageable yet still opens endless possibilities

Many thanks Gracie, this has been a great help. Your music theory approach is one of the best on UA-cam, if not the best! Kind Regards, Stewart
I really just use Harmonic and Melodic minor for bits and pieces, I love them. I like the diminished 7th, I like to mess with the Altered scale you get from melodic minor. yes it can feel overwhelming because there is so much! keep enjoying what you're playing -- and have fun :)
Comparative explanation of three minor scales was very interesting. One observation if the 3rd note of any major scale is flattened it becomes a melodic minor scale of that key is'it?
Yes that is right
And flatting the 6th aa well gives you the harmonic minor scale.
