You missed out the emergency stop. That was compulsory in Scotland in 1972. Always remember my test, it drizzled rain all morning and as the examiner said "when I hit the dash with my hand you will do an emergency stop". No sooner had he said that when a small child ran out from the pavement. I stopped, the examiner nearly hit his head on the dash and as we both recovered, he turned and said, "You've passed." Proudest day of my then seventeen-year-old life. The child got an almighty clout from its mother, by the way.

I was terrified of the emergency stop because the cobblestones were slick from recent rain but she made me do it on tarmac without stalling. She still haunts me.

I'm 59 Tony and as people of our generation know we had the Green Cross Code Man played by Darth Vader himself David Prowse. We even had Tufty The Squirrel telling us how to cross the road. Mind you we also had Rolf Harris teaching kids to swim and Jimmy Savile telling us to Clunk Click. So it was a mixed bag of safety based public information films. Turns out you could only really trust the fictional characters.

As a 72 year old codger, I love your videos. To the point and and your narrative is so funny.
As to parking facing oncoming traffic at night. That also applies to daytime. The Highway Code says you SHOULD not park facing oncoming traffic. Time and time again I see driving school drivers picking up clients when parked on the wrong side of the road. It's a bad habit, lazyness and an offence at night. Illegal and enforced in some countries.

I was on holiday in the Scottish Highlands recently and it's very common for "local" drivers to use bully boy tactics to make you move out of the way. Usually by getting right up close. All the smaller roads have lots of passing places, so it's easy to let them pass. But their attitudes show up what kind of drivers they are.

One of my son's workmates passed his driving test a few months ago. I understand, from what my son said, that his instructor taught him four manoeuvres; how to parallel park, the turn in the road (3 to 23 point turn), left-hand reverse, right-hand reverse (into a parking bay). He was told by his instructor that he would only be tested on two of the four, one of which would be the parallel park, (because examiners have been instructed to include that) and the second would most likely be one or other of the reverse manoeuvres. Someone required to take an enhanced test, as happens when they have been naughty, will apparently be tested on all four.

BL were their own worst enemy designing new models sometimes - the Ital was like a face lifted Marina, with lever arm front suspension when the rest of the world had been using Macpherson struts for a decade.

By the time they are teenagers, they are arrogant and big-headed, they think they know it all, and they ignore all the rules they were taught. Parallel parking facing the wrong way is an offence at any time here in NZ, for the reason you described. It is the easiest offence to spot as you drive around, and all to often drivers who do this have other offences like an expired registration or expired WoF (mot) and a couple of infringements can be issued to the one vehicle.

I'm 62 years old so in the top end of the demographic you showed at the beginning of the video. I passed my test (first time) in the early Eighty's. My driving instructor was an Ex- Senior Metropolitan Traffic officer who retired to Lancashire. After a few lessons with him he was confident enough in my skills to teach me a few driving techniques most people would not be taught, e.g.; Defensive driving / threat observation etc, much the same as todays Police driving test. Calling out observation to show I had situational awareness but never of course breaking any rules of the Highway code. His advice to me was to concentrate on what is in front of you and what might appear from the sides, to a lesser degree use your mirrors to keep an eye on what's behind you but what's behind you is not your problem! Over 40 years experience and still with a clean licence I think he taught me well. 👌👍.

Also it used to be called the three point turn, but I think too many learners thought they had to do it in 3 rather than 5 or 7 or more so they changed the name to turning the car using the forward and reverse gears and without touching the kerb.
As usual another great video, and your commentary is fantastic!!

We had to pass a written test on our knowledge of the road code, and only went onto the practical test if we passed the written. It seems that we probably ARE better drivers because of how we were taught!

I grew up on a farm, driving instructor had a forehead slap moment when he asked me to turn the car in the road. I reversed first and did it in 2 moves, he never specified the direction of travel for the first movement lol It was a quiet road with no traffic so I didnt see the problem.

I passed my test first time in 1980 definitely easier then I was so nervous I forgot to turn on my windscreen wipers on when it was raining and I went up the kerb when reversing round the corner. I was asked lots of questions at the end and passed. Passed the motorbike test as well so after Riding a motorcycle you learn so much. 43 years later I now drive for a living

Proud to be an old codger of 78 years young with 61 years of driving and motor-cycling experience behind me and hopefully a few more years left to go. Baa Humbug to the critics of older drivers. I have to admit Tony, watching some of the antics of todays learners and their Instructors, I do wonder if any Road Traffic Law as you and I knew it is still applicable in this "Modern Age" of motoring, as for their knowledge of the Highway Code contents the less said about that the better. 8:35 A 1983 Morris Ital Estate, looks like its been well looked after too, I don`t think that the Ital was a successful seller for BL along with a good many of that Manufacturers offerings.

I remember endless reversing round corners when learning to drive, the notorious corner used by many instructors in the area also went uphill. All stood me in good stead and I can reverse into parking spaces pretty well and know how to parallel park correctly on the right side of the road without having to make a million attempts to straighten up. Passed my test in the 80’s on a Friday 13th and yes I am in one of the last two columns!

A bit of info from Australia, it is an offence to park on the wrong side of the road as you must have failed to keep left of the road. On the matter of pedestrian priority, here on roundabouts cars have priority over pedestrians so that cars are not required to stop mainly exiting roundabouts to allow pedestrians to cross thus keeping the roundabout clear. Driving standards here are deteriorating too, it appears mostly Ute (pickup/truck) drivers.

I'm 45 years old, so driving for 29 years. I'm in the US, and I took my driving test in a right hand drive jeep. Back then all the postal vehicles that delivered were right hand drive. My Dad bought one and I used it for my driving test. I didn't have a 3 point turn in my test, and I didn't even have to parallel park.. I was supposed to, and I was ready for it, but the instructor giving me the test was so enamored with the vehicle I was driving that he forgot. A 100% on the test simply because of the car I was driving... how about that?

On my driving test in nov 79, (last century) I had been practicing for a reverse round the corner going up a hill, only wing mirrors then, and all you could see was tree tops and the sky, but my ingenious teacher had match sticks wedged into the rear window (Escort mk1) and irrespective of the road you could use them to reverse anywhere, as it turns out I had the easy one where you could see, the 3 point turn was also done on a really wide road but with traffic parked blocking sight of anyone coming,
Obviously I passed but then got to work and was left to empty a car transporter, both decks I had to use imaginary matchsticks for that but didn't prang any 😊

Greetings from yet another old codger!
Top notch ranting!!! The car in question was, I believe a Morris Marina/Ital,another reason why BL/Rover went tits up...
I passed my test in 1973 when most cars would struggle to do 70 mph with the usual provisions,e.g. downhill, strong following etc.
They had no gizmos like ABS etc.
There was also a lot less of them on the road and nowhere near as many Audi's BMWs ....
Keep on ranting,it's mostly true and very observant.
And you're not as old an old codger as me!!!

We used to have public information films in the sixties and seventies regarding road usage, I wasn't allowed out on my bicycle until i passed my cycling proficiency test, (which was taught at school) and that was in the sixties.

    Been driving 44 years.
    Seen something stupid every day.
If someone is stupid & selfish when they get out of bed.
They will be stupid and selfish.
    Walking,riding or driving.
    Re crossing the road.
Our teachers took us out of the primary school and gave us advice crossing the local roads.
A lot of people seem to be totaly unaware of their surroundings and consequences of their actions.
    Whatever they are doing.
Of course I am perfect and never make a mistake.
    But if I do.
I hope I'm lucky and have someone with the skill to read the situation & forsight to predict the actions of an old fart.

I temporarily stopped allowing porridge to spill onto my lap to let you know, I'm a frequent visitor to your channel. I often find myself laughing out loud at your sardonic comments, well-placed as they are. Subliminal messaging ... "Always an Audi" now features daily in my motoring activities. I'm still driving professionally (Ambulance Service) at the age of 60. Driving standards are at best abysmal. How to respond appropriately to blue lights and sirens should be mandatory and part of the Learner Driver experience. Even "seasoned" drivers still make major errors when confronted in this situation. It's terrifying at times. Lane discipline? Non-existent all over the UK, impatience, lack of consideration, no forward planning and it seems to me that anyone under the age of 55 cannot see any further ahead than the end of their nose. Spacial awareness, and lack of knowledge regarding heavies (tail-swing and space needed to turn left or right, has no consideration from the average driver). I also hold Cat D and know only too well the pain of being responsible for over 70 passengers in a bus when traversing the narrow lanes and roads in Cornwall dealing with numpties in Smart Cars or similar size. Please keep the content coming, I always look forward to your commentary and it makes me happy to know I'm not the only one that thinks that Joe Public are at best, dreadful and many shouldn't be allowed to push a whee-barrow on an allotment let alone be in "charge" of a potential killing machine on the road. I've seen too many RTC's due to reckless driving and driving without due care and attention. Stay safe everyone. That way, we can continue to enjoy Tony's very entertaining content.

Always agree with your comments but I'm gonna agree to disagree on the final HGV sequence. Car drivers just fly up the sides of trucks with no thought and cause mayhem. This HGV did the best thing by straddling the lanes to prevent any further chaos and probably actually helped keep the traffic flowing.

Another old git, 75, and I passed my test (1st attempt) in 1965. I completely screwed up my first attempt at reversing around a corner, as soon as I realised that it wasn't working, I asked to do it again and the examiner said OK. Fortunately, I got it right that time.
I failed my motorbike test the same year because I couldn't start the bloody thing. It was an Ariel Leader. Wish I still had it, it's worth a lot more than the £75 I paid for it! Well, a bit more!
