I've opened up a few "parts" reels over the past couple years. Sellers always said that the crank is frozen. I liked the deals those sellers gave me as the fix was easy, and the reels worked like new after I detail cleaned the parts and relubed. Thanks for all your help on your video posts in helping me know what to look for when I detail clean parts, Dennis!
Same here- I have a bunch of vintage never used reels that someone thought they were no good but was just that the old grease became a solid- let them soak in some dawn and hot water mix- cleaned relived- new again
Hello Dennis . . . Thank you for showing this video because I bought this same one back in the late 70's only used it once At Point Pleasant Inlet after that it was stored and hung up in the basement, now that I have seen this video I will do a compete restore of it -
That's a DAM fine reel you have there Dennis. There's no way that a company would get away with naming themselves DAM. The grease inside has that wonderful smell of something close to hypoid gear lubricant. You never forget that smell.
Hi Dennis, Your explanations and visuals on this Dam Quick 440 video are at a whole another level !! Awesome. Especially appreciate the detail of the bail spring reassembly. Thank You. Am hoping my Dam Quick 220's bail spring set up will go the same way ?!?! Enjoy the coming Spring. Best Regards, Cons
I'm surprised how much like the Shakespeare royal maroons this one looks inside as far as the basic mechanism. Worm drive gear, same style of stamped and bent around crosswind arm , it's attached directly to the main gear , and attached to the axle shaft with a dome headed pin. The non sealed bearings DAM used are an advantage in my mind, because they're easier to clean lubricate than a sealed bearing. Usually substitute replacements can be found, but many bearings were made better and I like saving them. It's a very simple, reliable, and smooth mechanism design. Probably the best ever used in a spinning reel, at least in my opinion but I'm certainly no expert and haven't been inside as many reels as you have. The anti reverse on this one is definitely interesting, and I'm not sure how I feel about it. On one hand there's much less to deal with during a regular basic servicing/ maintenance, but on the other hand you have to take it down a lot further if you also want to service the anti reverse.
IHonestly I prefer the older 440 as opposed to this 440N. I have a 550, 440, 331 (high speed), and four 270 Super reels. All these DAM Quick reels are tanks and all but indestructable. When I’ve worked on my 270 Supers I’ve had a very difficult time knocking out those handle pins. One in particular would simply not budge. Would heat help? Great video of a very nice reel! - Chris

They do look similar to those and to the early SpinFisher reels

I think as a last resort you could try heat.
I use dawn and warm water to clean the old grease and a tooth brush - works great
Sounds good - Thanks for the tip - Dennis
12:52 is there a larger crank handle that can be installed on the 440 reel
I am not aware of a larger handle for this reel
Why you prefer grease on main shaft?
It lasts longer and stays there versus oils which evaporate or run off - Dennis
I know a lot of guys use yamalube marine and swear by it. Not a fishing reel grease but supposedly great stuff. I've never tried it, you?
I have never tried it. I found that the Penn Greases work well and come in large containers, so I use them for most applications
