      Just found a #9, cleaned and put it back together. I didn't tear it down completely but my issue is: free spool tensioner knob doesn't seem to do much of anything until the very last say 1/16th of a turn when it's completely seated. Same with drag star, last bit of tightening I can get out of it before it becomes effective, which it is, just seems to have lost the fine tune abilities. Is this a characteristic of the real? Do you have any thoughts? Thanks for the content 👍

I totally understand.... sometimes, it can seem a bit overwhelming, but I believe, if you're a little mechanically inclined and have the free time, you can do it yourself with the help of this video. However, there's no shame in having someone else do it.... they're nice reels that should stay in circulation. Spread the word about the channel.

    It took me all day yesterday and watching your video a couple times but I completely tore down, cleaned, and rebuilt my Penn 9. I am very impressed with the quality and simplicity of the reel, mine is a 30N-9 which I believe is one of the first issues made around 1955 or so. It really does look bulletproof. Need to get my man a cold drink. Suffering from showbiz camera dry throat. Corrosion X wiped and Q-Tipped on all the interior parts, screws, shafts, spools, springs, ,all of it. Also makes the Bakelite brilliant. The Key bit is the dog and the leaf spring on a Peer 9, that and lapping the drag washers with 2000 grit. No Miniscule lock ring on my spool gear of my recent junkyard find. It's locked with steaked nuts and disassembles with wrenches on each end,,if one needs to. Original spool I think?. It was HEAVILY pitted The Lathe fixed that. Peeled about 2 grams off the spool bell ends. Finished the plated tin alloy to a very nice brilliance with 2000 grit again along with some rouge and rag. It spins nice and quick now. Shaft balancer said,,"good to go"!!. Don't think it was ever opened, but could be wrong. Thanks for the reassembly TSG!.

    • @TSGReelService
      @TSGReelService  3 роки тому

      Lol, nope... Sadly, it's always that way... you know what they say, embrace your quirks. But the camera does have a way of magnifying the pressure. 🤷🏽‍♂️ Your lathe and buff work is out of my league.... I'm still stuck in steel wool mode. For some reason, I prefer grease on the bakelite and corossionx on graphite (a la TLD25).... old habits die hard. Thanks for watching and the tips!

    • @kh40yr
      @kh40yr 3 роки тому

      @@TSGReelService No Problem, and thank you. Yes, steel wool is life. As a side note,,once you lap the drag washers to being parallel flat like they should have been from the factory, you can set that one 'tabbed" drag washer in the middle of the stack,,and it wont want to fall out so easy and 'jam' the reel. The tab slots in that gear are cut top to ALMOST bottom inside that gear itself. In theory,,it could be put at the bottom of the stack if the fiber/rubber friction washer is thick enough that is placed first, in the bottom of the gear. Some fisherfools are REAL diehards, they use Pam Cooking Spray on the Bakelite and the whole loaded reel,,while fishing with it. Lol. The kind of kooky stuff that goes on here in the Pacific Northwest/Wild Wild West. Corrosion X on all for the biMetallic corrosion inhibit, then the gear train gets Cals Purple grease. I am a private aircraft mechanic when needed,, and have used Corrosion X on aircraft parts that see 200+ mph for hours,,in battering rain and weather,,and it still stays in place. Nasa stuff. Take care TSG, Happy Holidays .

    • @TSGReelService
      @TSGReelService  3 роки тому

      Thanks and likewise! My theory on the "bowed" washers is that they would get compressed flat as the star increases drag. Of course, I'm not an engineer, so it's more of a semi-logical speculation and I don't really have a way of proving it. But, I get your point on the risk of them slipping out of place. The Pam spray is a good one... whatever works for them, right? Stay safe.

    • @kh40yr
      @kh40yr 3 роки тому

      @@TSGReelService Yes sir. Your more of an engineer than you think, especially doing this kind of work. As you showed us,, only 1 thin bowed spring tension washer,, it's on the top of the stack,,the rest should be CNC parallel ground flat, but Penn didn't want to do that, or they figured it wouldn't be as important. They punched the washers out on a press machine, which leaves one side dead flat and one side slightly rounded due to the punch/press procedure. Once those heavy washers are "fixed", the drag has more capability and is much smoother. If needed I reset that bowed spring washer with a same radius piece of round stock, hammer and a slight bit of heat, or find a new one. ALWAYS, ALWAYS back that drag wheel off loose when parking the reel for a bit or for storage, on every reel, especially the granpa stuff.

      Thanks for checking out the video. Probably the tension (or lack thereof) you've applied using your star drag. If that's not the issue, check that your drag stack is seated properly, and not partially out of the gear.

Use this video to open your reel up and check to make sure something is missing or damaged. Without that dog engaging, you won't have any drag, vis a vis, no resistance, hence, no drag. Thanks for checking out the video. It sounds like you may have some frozen or stuck parts inside, so the pinion is not recessing enough for you to go into freespool.... or possibly an issue with the drag stack. Try using the video to service your reel. If you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself, take it to your local repair shop. Hope that helps.

    Hey TSG. Working on my Penn 210 using this guide. I have a good amount of play in the small gear that flat side slots onto the spool shaft and is held on with the little ring. Doesn't spin freely but probably about more than a year tooth's worth of play. Is this normal/OK or should I be looking to replace that gear so it seats tight? Thanks

      Thanks for checking out the video. Part 66 naturally has a little play in it. I would do three things:
      1) turn the gear while it's on the spindle.... if it turns more than a quarter turn, replace it.
      2) remove it and check the inner portion for significant rounding. Change it if it's significant.
      3) order a back up (plus an idler gear), just in case.
