My friends and I live on the trail and heard about this release, but we passed on this because of price. I had just gone to the distillery the previous week and randomly ran into Jimmy Russell, so that was cool.
My local whisky bar had a Russell's Flight for $75. 1 oz pour of each the 10yr, 13yr, and 15yr. Absolutely loved this 15 yr, Holy Moly!! Straight buttercream and cherry/oak bomb. So balanced between the spice and sweet. Loved loved it ❤
With a lot of phone calls and legwork, I was able to score two bottles of Russell's 15 here in the state of Iowa (right around retail price). I haven't cracked either open yet. One store did have a bottle marked at $999, and another store had it at $599. I didn't purchase either of these...
Nice get yall! I was 4 people too late! 720 tickets and I was #724... Super excited for this one. Looking forward to finding one. Great review. Cheers y'all!
Had chance to buy this bottle the past weekend in Lexington at kroger for 300. Passed and bought the turkey 70th anniversary bottle they had allocated for 50
I wasn't able to grab a R13 until like batch 3 because of the hype. I expect much of the same with this bottle unfortunately. And the 700-800 secondary price on this is ridiculous and has the flippers giddy with joy.
I got one from my local kroger for retail a few weeks back. Also got a 2024 birthday bourbon if y’all would be interested in doing a short and sweet on it…. Local to Lexington. No pressure lol
I got to try this a couple nights ago, it was fantastic! And I’m not normally a big fan of Russel’s products. This might be bourbon of the year though.
Just began hitting shelves last week in Connecticut. Apparently the reps were not precious and were handing stores full cases of these. Two of my locals even sacraficed a bottle for public tasting and a third did also but only because they had a tiny accident and broke a bottle (strained and decanted I was told 😅). Sadly I didnt get over to try them... On another note, you remark on the almost vintage quality of this. Could that be down to this having been distilled on the old equipment before Turkey underwent its upgrade? I imagine batch one of the RR13 would also have been..though they dumped a bunch of older stocks into batch 3 too...I think a Mega Flight Fight is in order soon! Thanks for the vid!
Thanks for the review. So would you buy this over Pappy 15? I ask, because in the Total Wine lotter they are about the same price (RR 15 is $310 + tax). I'm terribly conflicted, because now that I'm coming down off my Covid tater high...I'm usually hard pressed to find things much better than a RR store pick for $75. Also the RR 13 is going for $165 in the Total Wine lottery.
@@MrZanzibar123 I put the RR 13 at the top. But, I ended up "winning" my 3rd or 4th pick...Weller full proof ($65). So I wouldn't have won the RR 15 anyway, because I'm pretty sure that was the most limited bottle they had. I'm probably more excited about the Russell's Reserve Single Barrel store pick (Camp Nelson) I got while shopping. I've never had a Camp Nelson before, and I hear some Turkey Heads seek it out (I've been pretty happy with the Tyrone bottles I've had...but the contrast will be fun).
I did side by side with rr13, batch 3. I could not discern a difference on the nose or palate. But I’m no expert, only difference is that the 15 was darker
I did the same thing. While very similar I could tell differences. The 15 had more brown sugar ish flavor where I got more red fruit with the rr13 batch3. Though for me they were very close. Blind I preferred the 13. But barely. Score in the blind was 1-10, and they were .05 apart lol
And here I thought I was the only one still using "Hellooooooooo Nurse!" 😅 Just here to be the token complainer that "I'll never see it at MSRP in my area!" 'cause, well, I'll never see it for MSRP in my area.
I should have traded or sold the bottle I got from my local liquor store but I just had to try it since I enjoyed 13 so much. No regrets and compared to 13 I feel like it really is elevated. The richness I remember from 13 was transferred over to the 15 in a smoother, richer, more sophisticated pour. Wouldn’t buy it again tho. Please don’t pay over $400 for this bottle it just isn’t worth it
I’ve never even been able to purchase a 13 so I know I’ll never see this one. The last 13 I saw, the store wanted $600 so what how much will people try to rip us off for this one??? I’ll just stick with Rare Breed or Russell’s single barrel until prices get more reasonable. I’ll pass and look for a reasonably priced pour at a bar.
Gotta make offers. I have searched for rr13 for like a year. Finally found one where the dude negotiated with me. He had it listed at 400, I paid 200 cash.
17.67 dolls per year. Compare that to when we had bourbons 10 doll per year. Almost twice the price!! Even when we count inflation, that's a lot considering how cheap it is to manufacture bourbons. I do appreciate wild turkey's name value but this is too much. Yeah, hard pass. I would rather drink single malts at this point.
@@ItsBourbonNightI love the IDEA of going to a bar and ordering a pour of this as a way to try it, or even to save money buy not spending $250 on a bottle but I wonder where everyone that suggests this tactic is going for pours?? Around me in NC bars and restaurants are required to purchase spirits from the ABC, which sells bottles at retail prices, but will then charge $$$$ for a 1oz pour, even though the bars themselves paid no mark ups for bottles. WLW, GTS, MM Cellar aged etc are priced between $85-$200….PER OUNCE at bars, and that’s IF you can even find a bar that sells it…..😢 Basically they are charging a normal bar level mark up price (which I understand) but based on secondary prices (which they did not pay) instead of msrp. The bourbon market/bar scene and secondary prices are seriously a bummer for a whiskey enthusiast that actually wants to buy and experience the whiskey in the bottle, rather than post pics and sell on secondary.
I don’t what it is, but Turkey is so off my palettes profile. It’s got a twang that’s just not for me. I got lucky enough to have a pour of RR 13 batch 2 and was so underwhelmed. I can’t see the price on these. Campari is driving Turkey’s price up every year on special releases pricing their biggest fans out of the game to get them.
I am very curious to see how this blinds. This is the only review I've seen of the Russell's 15 that has been overwhelmingly positive. Most seem to be disappointed compared to the 13. On a large FB group I'm part of drinkers were really upset that it was losing to Russell's store picks in blinds. It could be that you guys both just love this but Chad was right when spoke about seeing how this blinds in the future. $250 is getting crazy and after the last disappointing Master's Keep I do wonder if these expensive WT products are really worth it.
No UA-cam. But a personal blind at my house. It was very close to RR13 batch 3. Flavor was definitely different, but similar. And I liked the 13 better. Barely. 13 got a 9.8 score. 15 got a 9.75 (out of 10). RR10, wild Turkey rare breed and WT Kentucky spirit were also in the blind. Both the RR13/RR15 beat everything else
Not really sure that anybody that showed up in the first hour was able to get a bottle. Don’t cover for Wild Turkey’s shit show of a release. What you most certainly had was people cycling back through the line and buying multiple bottles because they had a ticket that was passed out prior to opening. At the same time those that showed up after were unable to buy despite there being bottles visibly behind the counter. Some were able to get as many as 8 bottles.
With $500 dollars one could buy a barrel of whiskey. Even J.C.Himself couldn't con me into purchasing this bottle. Think of how many W.T 101's I could have. Ah near life's supply & equally as good I'm sure.! This is just plain foolishness and whiskey hysteria on the part of the over hyped whiskey buying public. Surely people aren't that easily gulled? Not going to say "stupid".
$500 would get you about two brand new barrels, but they wouldn't have anything in them! If only a full barrel of whiskey were that cheap these days :) We get your point though, everyone has their threshold for how much they'll spend on Bourbon and everything else for that matter. But that's the beauty of whiskey, there's something for everyone at all price categories!
If it was $150 id bite. Up to $180 id think about it. $250 and up i have to be a hard pass. Shame cause id love to have one. Turkey make such great whiskey.
