use lights with geometry nodes in blender

- This video shows you a neat little way to connect geometry nodes to lights, or indeed anything that you attach a driver to. It's also episode two of "The Alien Test" series where I break down how I animated an entire scene with the simulation zone. But whether you're a devotee of the button pushing alien or someone desperate to solve their geometry node with lights needs, you'll be totally satisfied but this 8 minute audio visual display.
It also has a few blender 4.1 features, including the viewer text attribute
Part of the technique used was inspired by this video of Erindale's. I can't recommend it highly enough. Any serious pursuer of the geomertry node arts should ingest his every upload -

10/10 thumbnail. Bold text clearly describing topic of video; relevant image; leading lines directing your attention to the center of the thumbnail without using lazy arrows; beautiful lighting and color grading.
Yes.
I sweat my thumbnails. It’s the only part of this UA-cam business I don’t like. I feel as though I have to become a high end advertising agency but I’ve got no one I can yell at to get me coffee. So it made me smile hard to get a 10/10. Thank you. Quality comment
Felt like I was watching "hitch hikers guide to the galaxy" geometry nodes version 😂 I loved it.
"The absolute best thing you could do is..." What is a absolute best thing you could do when attacked by a bear? Find out in next episode of geometry nodes simulation tutorial :D
🐻
Never before have I had a warm fuzzy feeling of peace and security while watching a geo nodes tutorial...Instantly subbed
Ha. Thanks. All the nodes really want is to be your friends
The production value and information value of this video is just insane. Love it.
man. you. save. lives.
Criminally underrated. You have so much potential keep going!
Good news, if you don't want to use drivers you can instance a light and in eevee scale it's size to reduce emission. I used this to create a TV screen by separating a video into 3 colours, then using them as vakues to scale lights in a grid.
Yeah, scaling a light instance when rendering in eevee works for intensity. Instancing lights in general is really useful! The benefit of the driver method is that you can literally drive *anything* that can be driven. Now eevee next is going to be a whole new disco with its realtime emissions…
You really got an amazing teaching, presentation, and blender skills all in one. Thank you!
Thank you
THIS IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! Loved the way you cracked this insane setup.
Hey, im not really that far with geometry nodes yet. But I just wanted to tell you that, that thumbail is award winning! Expect many views.
Blender needs a global scene node system for attributes. This thing would take me one Minute in C4D or Modo.
these vids r sooooo goood wow, more!!!!!!!!!
The absoilute best thing you can do is what?... )
Bro can you start a geometry node series 😢😢
I see the light
Great video. But begs the question, why have the lights not been converted to a Geometry Node yet by the Blender team? I cannot even from a tech point of view see why it would be an issue beyond a focus/wait for the new eevee engine.
THE BEST THING WE CAN DO IS WHAT?!
Thats quite a workarounds inception, we need to go deeper.
Nicejob Bro ❤🔥
Excellent humor.
This is smart, but it is sad that is has to be that complicated
Like many things in life - it’s only complicated the first time but it’s always humorous
Wouldn't it be easier to generate an attribute in the object that contains the GN, then use a driver from the GN modifier to the light node group to control it, I think it's easier.
If you want to avoid a direct connection of the GN modifier to the actual light nodes you can generate a Custom Property in the light itself and make the driver from the custom property to the light nodes, and then use a driver from the GN modifier to the Custom property of the light.
It's important to keep the driver from the output attribute from the GN modifier and not from the node group to avoid problems if you want to use different modifiers that can vary their behaviour.
The cool thing is that everything you need can be done from within the GN node tree instead of having to do something more complex with an additional geometry and the drivers. :)
It’s currently impossible to connect geometry nodes directly to a driver. We’re just not there yet. You can drive a value *in* GN but not the other way around. And EEVEE doesn’t do light nodes (yet). But the future will be bright and full of newly possible things. Until then, there’s vertex groups
Just discovered your channel!! Love it!! 😍
🙏🏻
you're the dan worrall of blender videos
I can assure you that I’m absolutely terrible at cricket
very concise! I know you work really hard on these. Hopefully it pays of soon. Keep making these!
Off topic, do you think you'll stick with the channel name. Sure its unique but maybe too long for your brand. But hey you know best.
btw, subbed :)
Thanks! There is actually a rebrand on the way. Don’t want to spoil any surprises but I think maybe I’m ready to put my name on this thing. 👀
@@harryblends let's goo!!
Welcome to another episode of blender artists going to great lengths to avoid touching python scripting. This is pretty fun though
So you suggest learning how to script, without scripting you cannot achieve any great things in 3d?
@@pesvel yes to the first part, no to the second. You can do awesome things without but learning it can benefit you so much
@@kolupsy where should I start? In the scripting, as a user who does not have any knowledge?
step one) spend two years learning python
step two) spend two years learing python in blender
step three) ???
step four) profit
@@lopsidedpolygonmake it two weeks for both
Brilliant explanations, hilarious narration, incredible timing and motion graphics.
Would you share some hints wrt. your production pipeline? What tools do you use and how much time to you spend on a flick like this? Thanks a lot, and please keep on producing such high-level content!
why is it so hard to use geo nodes
Don’t use them. Let them use you
the ending is the best part
I agree! It means I get to go to bed
Thanks. However, I'm unable to find the "index switch" node...Would like to ask how to get it.
The index switch node is new in 4.1 which is officially released next week. But you can grab it from the experimental section of the download page on the blender website!
damn you earned a sub
Great video! Learnt a lot
Perfect video, you remind me of Ze Frank if he made a surprise "True Facts about Geometry Nodes" video
Thanks. I must seek this Ze Frank out. Sounds like he’s my kinda temperature.
I feel that I'm learning and getting an unconfortable feeling... great video
🫣
Amazing, as always
I just *love* the way you present information, but everything you do in this video is a total overkill.
There's much much much MUCH easier way to do this with built-in methods:
First, you create a named attribute just like you did here.
But then, instead of using the conVert and all these shenanigans, you just take your named attribute and oh please don't tell me you believed I had a real solution to this, your way is probably the best there is for now, don't mind me. Just had to take revenge on you for making me tackle the bear without clear instructions.
And that's it! Love your videos though.
😂
😌
broah.. you need shortcut your channel name
