  • I meant this to be a 'quick' video but somehow it grew to 40+ minutes. I take a look at each of my 22 Phalaenopsis orchids. I apologize for the length of the video but I'm just naturally chatty so the dialogue kind of got away from me. Hope you enjoy.

    ........chatty with you is a good thing.....your great speaking on camera..and orchid collection is beautiful......22 phals, ...wow, ..to me.......they can be harder to grow, than other orchids ........start adding calmag and some kelp seaweed to your water and the "F" issues will disappear.....99% of the time root loss is due to lack of calcium .........remember every single cell has to have calcium.....every tiny bit of leaf, bulb, cane, flower spike, and root......is made of cell walls with calcium...when they run out of calcium.......they stop growing......roots die back, new growths die back.....flower spikes die back....plants will stall, ...just sit there....leaves will be twisted and stunted.....I feed 18-20% calcium......and still spray with calmag.........you can never give them to much calcium....

      Rick L. Orchids thanks Rick! I have been giving them a pretty high dose of my Cal/Nitrate mix this summer and although most have responded well about half of my Cattleya have not. I do have Cal/mag so I will have to try doing that. Do you add it to your fertilizer or do a separate feed with just the Cal/mag?

      Hi Rick, I am new to water culture and trying to combine the right nutrients for my phals. I also follow Danielle’s videos. Can I use cal/mag, a pinch of epsom salt with SuperThrive for my orchids that are dehydrated and lacking roots?

    Very informative video. Very tempted to try one or two in WC thanks to your videos! As a side note, when my pups have had surgeries and needed cones for a short time, we bought the soft padded ones at pet store. They didn't mind those as much.

      Bernie A. I have seen those cones at my Vet office. She had to have emergency surgery at the 24 hour vet so they only had the hard plastic ones. Sutures should be coming out this Friday so poor thing only has a few days left with that come.

    24:05 One more thing... I started adding 1/4 tsp epsom/gal fert water bc I had some phals & catts w/ purpling or decreased vigor and it helped tremendously. It was magnesium deficiency (which oddly I never experienced in 13 years til this year). Maintenance is 1/8-1/4 tsp but...I did a couple initial treatment doses as 1/2 tsp (I've even heard of mega doses as 1 tsp). Sue Bottom has written a lot about this topic in orchid publications online.

    Thank you for the very informative video on your water culture orchids. At one point I did have all of mine in water culture. Some of them started having the same issues that yours are having, not looking like they should, just not thriving, no new leaves or roots, etc. Then when I was watching the Orchid Whisperer she was saying that some of her orchids in water culture we're doing those exact same things. That is when she said that some orchids do better in different mediums. So after a couple years I have transitioned most of the orchids over to New Zealand Orchid sphagnum moss oss, then I go by her fertilizing tactic of 20 drops of Cal Mag and a pinch of Epsom salts in a gallon of water while they are growing. Sometimes I sprinkle organic lime on the top Maybe three times a year. She also has a recipe for when they are in spike and blooming. I have followed these regimens and they are doing fantastic! If you wanted to keep yours in the water culture you can try her recipes by watching her videos, on some of your orchids that just don't seem to be thriving like they should. Maybe try it on one you're not so attached to first LOL. Again I really enjoyed your videos!

    Great video thank you. I really learned how to grow in FWC bc of you so keep up the great work. So helpful bc I am also in NY and have similar environmental limitations. I would love type specific videos esp oncidium types as I just inherited 2! Also maybe a Frisarium (sp) 101 type video ( what I it how to spot, treat etc) would be helpful. Also when and how it’s useful to trim the end tip of the orchid (I forgot what the very tip is called. I’m talking about the end nub closest to the water 😬) thank you!

    At a certain point we get more selective. Wonderful idea bringing the orchids on the way from Florida, that is what I would do too. Nice work you have been doing with your Phals. I gave up on wc, too much work having to clean the vases to get rid of the algae, now I changed to semihydro. Loved your video although big hybrid Phals are not my favourite.
    Hope your dog will get better soon, that cone is so uncomfortable. I have 2 german sheppards and a cat as well as a bunch of fish in the pond, lizzards and toads around my yard😊

    I'm so glad you showed this video. I've been under the impression that I should cut off any root from the area where mushiness occurs, so I've been cutting off more than I should have. Should I spray with hydrogen peroxide (the mushy root section after I've removed that area?)

    Nice video. I have a bunch of phals but only one in water culture.. and it is doing great! Started off with basically no roots and now growing roots like crazy. Makes me think I should do them all in water culture. I'm just nervous about it! Some of the phals I have are a few years old.

    • @daniellesorchidranch1591
      @daniellesorchidranch1591  6 років тому +1

      Garnet16 I only started water culture because I couldn't keep them alive in bark. If you have a method that works for you and your plants are happy perhaps don't switch them all over to WC. I do love seeing that root growth though! You don't really get to see much of that growing in media!

    Excellent water culture video Danielle!😊 AND wow your The ONLY person I know who’s able to grow a phal schilleriana in water culture! I recently asked if anyone had had any success growing them on the ‘water culture and general care’ Facebook page and got no takers. Helen who has literally hundreds of orchids in water culture said after 2 years she’s had to move hers into moss. Mine just stalled 100% and unlike my other phals didn’t pick up at all after a year, she just continued to decline.

      Chris Trinder thanks, hopefully she continues to enjoy water culture, her leaf grew and she got new roots so all signs look good. She was a pretty sorry looking plant when I got her so I guess she could really only improve. The real test will be if she gets a new leaf. 🤞 I will post any changes to keep you updated.

And i saw you also have marbles at the bottom of your plants. Is it to keep the roots moist?. Please help Rua Boshoff South Africa

    Hi Danielle, have you tried cal-mag and a tiny pinch of Epsom salts. I do a pinch of Epsom salts and 20 drops of cal-mag in a gallon of water. For my phalaenopsis orchids. That has really worked for me on my leaves and root growth tremendously. I only have 13 phalaenopsis orchids. I don't have any other types of orchids as of yet. I live in Michigan. I use the cal-mag and Epsom salts every other watering and my MSU fertilizer that I purchase from repotme.com. Then flush them out once a month thoroughly. My waterings are actually a soak in the sink for 10 minutes

    • @daniellesorchidranch1591
      @daniellesorchidranch1591  6 років тому

      Roxanne Parker I actually habe cal/mag and Epsom salt but I've never actually used them although I always plan to. Overall I am very happy with my root and leaf growth except with a few of my rescue Phalaenopsis so perhaps I will use it for them.

      Sandra Lea Melendez MSU fertilizer is a type of fertilizer developed by Michigan State University. It is a well balanced nutrient fertilizer that many orchid growers prefer.

      @@daniellesorchidranch1591 I have been enjoying watching all of your videos from the very start of the channel. You've taught me so much. Thank you for sharing your experience!!! As for me, I will try to keep my mini Phals alive till the day I go back home to Qatar. If they can make it with me here in the States, they will survive there too. It's so hot there, but they are going to stay indoors, so no worries. Just want to find out which media works best for me and for my babies!
