Missing Panels in Illustrator | How to Get Everything Back

- Are you missing panels, toolbars, or can't get your workspace to load correctly? Here's how to get everything back quickly and easily. If all of your toolbars and windows aren't opening up when you load illustrator, there are a couple of things that might be going on. First, you may just need to hit the tab key. Tab will turn on/off your toolbars and side windows to allow you to see more of your artboard. Also, the F key allows you to toggle full screen mode on and off - there are 3 settings for this, so cycle through them to pick your preference. Lastly, if none of that works, you probably need to reset your preferences by closing Illustrator and opening it again while holding Shift, Control, and Alt. This should clear out anything that's causing an issue, typically from a recent software update, but you'll have to go into your preferences and readjust them.

If you click and drag a panel, then hover over the area you want to lock it in place, then release, it will be "embedded" - assuming that's what you mean.

Thank you. Fortunately my toolbar was the only thing missing on the left side of the screen for whatever reason after an update. For those that still have the properties panel intact on the right side, but you are missing the toolbar on the left, simply select Window>Toolbars>Advanced
Great tip! The recent update has had some bugs in it too. I think they may have patched some of them already.

Oh my god, I clicked so many articles and tutorials that had no answer. It turns out I accidently hit "F" while doing a bunch of "CTRL F" work. THANKS!!!!!!!

So rusty with illustrator now. For the life of me I could not get long skinny art board menu at the top of the page visible where you can change the size etc. My workspace drop down isn't visible like yours so I did a search and found it. Essentials was checked and once I selected the essentials classic the art board menu showed up. Still can't view the drop down but I'm happy I have other menu visible now. You gave me a good start. Thank you.

Why does this even happen? I hate to be a complainer but I just feel it’s embarrassing on illustrators fault that this even happens.
Thank you Mr. Cary. You are a life saver. I was afraid I was going to have to reset my prefs because it was farting around. Ended up I had to reset prefs. Eff windows man. I'm getting annoyed and can't wait till I can scrounge up the dough to gladly pay the apple tax so I can go back to now having to fiddle with anything. Not too much of a mac fanboy, just love it if I can save time. Thank you again.

@@Liam_Maddog You haven't heard of that before? It's tongue and cheek. Apple tax refers to the difference in cost between apple and every other generic awful product that runs windows. I don't know if it came through in my comment, but I am high favor and respect of apples products/quality products.

Hi Cary, 'Ctrl/Shift/Alt' didn't work and neither did 'tabs' or the 'F' button, however, I now know that's what the 'F' button does. What worked for me was having done all you suggested I set up the layout the way I like, saved and then closed and opened it up again and all of a suggestion a new predefined layout appeared with elements I didn't know existed. I think this is an Adobe Illustrator action that wants you see how your layouts can look. I made some minor adjustments and now all works well...Thank you for post anyway...
Thank You, I highly appreciate this "new" trick; I'm unfortunately new to this and along with being college student and majoring in 'Graphic Design'. So the overall is that I'm pretty new to the illustrator application and these hotkeys and tools.
If your college experience was like mine, you'll learn more from tutorials than in the classroom. I taught myself 99% if what I know, and I'm not exaggerating.

my properties lost from top toolbar in indesign. I changed all the workspaces but properties appears right side only. Nothing comes top toolbar

It's a Blue Yeti USB mic for most of the video. My intro is slightly better quality as I record it in my studio and record the rest while at my desk, clicking around. My studio mic is Audiotechnica AT4040.
I hope i will get answers here . I want to edit my pattern that i want to create but there are no editing options showing on the editing panel when i click make pattern. How do i fix this
Hopefully, this answers your question. I would make the pattern and create a swatch with it by dragging the pattern into your swatches window. You can than double click on the new swatch you created and make edits that way.
Can you tell me how to make the advanced tool bar to stay permanently? Because everytime I open Ai it keep going back to basic toolbar and I had to change it again and again
You can save your workspace. Under Window, I believe.

Ok i just got Adobe I. 2020 and i dont have the quick access menu like you have there. all the videos i watch show it and i would LOVE to find that in the settings. Its the bar under the home icon that says no selection. all that stuff to the right of that i dont have on my version after i installed. where is that at folks?
Go to window > workspace > essentials classic. Otherwise, you will have a properties panel on the right. Essentials is the new default, but I don't like it.

My “Adobe Master Collection CS6” is missing the “Toolbars” option at the “Windows” pulldown menu (only “Tools” is there).
Also, the ‘three dotes’, at the bottom of the Tools Menu bar do not exist.
Please advise
My advise is to get Cc. It's so much better than CS6. I haven't used that version since it was new, so I don't recall what's missing or different.

when i click "file info" the window doesn't pop up. I use dual screen and sometimes take my laptop with me but the window is lost somewhere in another screen. I tried even hooking up 3 screens and that window is nowhere to be found. I can't click anything afterwards so I'm forced to force quit the program. ugh.

I just downloaded illustrator, there isn't a control bar! and every tutorial ever, even the preset tutorials are telling me to use it! I only have it for a trial to create a logo that I already have drawn.. how do I get the control panel and why didn't it open with the application?
Go to window > workspace and see if you can play with the settings there. I use classic. The newer defaults are more minimal than I like.
for those who it didnt work yet same as me till i found a new way, i tried all the ways, didnt work for me, so i just went to EDIT-PREFERENCE-GENERAL-RESET PREFERENCES-OKAY-RESTART NOW, and it worked, hope it works for you as well.

had to do ctrl + shift + alt, le sigh. but lesson learnt: it's easier in the long run to save my preferences and workspace. this used to happen me a lot of times at random and my solution was to restart ai. if that didn't work, i would close ai and leave it be for a few minutes and open it.
It's random. Sometimes this works, sometimes that. It's a pain to have to reset, but it's a good trick to know just in case.

Under your workspace layout, choose Essentials classic.

You might be in essentials classic under workspace instead of essentials.

Hello, so everything in illustrator is like, floating. and i've tried going through the windows settings but nothings worked.

@@CaryHawkins like the main panel with the art board is like floating. I can move it around and see my desktop. With the top bar still in place. I’m not sure how to explain.
Click the top portion of it and drag it until it clicks in place unde the top bar. You should see a slight outline to let you know it's working.

Try reinstalling the software, seeing if another program was recently updated that may have caused your issues, or ask Adobe tech support for help. Sometimes they can help you out. I just had one of their techs help me figure out an Adobe Track and Send issue that was part of a Microsoft update.

Adobe's Achilles' Heal: Preferences. for 10 years and counting.
I've honestly only had to reset a few times over 15 years. It is annoying but rarely a big problem for me. Everyone's experience can vary though.
@@CaryHawkins I gave up even doing it anymore. For example, InDesign will randomly not load with my custom layout, with the same randomness as UA-cam ignoring my Dark Mode setting. Could be the OS. But as always with Adobe, you have to wait about 12 years to have something nagging fixed.

Did not work. I think this is just the default setup of the latest Adobe illustrator. I guess they're trying to make it more "tablet friendly".
