My memory of the "Herc" was when as a young lad I was an "air cadet". At our annual summer camp at RAF Turnhouse (Now Edinburgh airport) around 1980, we were driven to RAF Leuchars for a "surprise". When we arrived the anticipation was palpable... in the building we were ushered into, our young lad's excited chatter died down as we heard a loud commotion getting closer... then from behind a hangar a C-130 with its RAF two tone brown camoflage taxied into view. As it drew up near to the building, we were led out into the din and filed up the rear cargo ramp. How good was this !!! A flight in a "Herc" for young lads.
We settled down into the netting seats along either side of the cargo hold. And the ramp was raised. We taxied out onto the runway and minutes later we were airborne. We were taken northwards to RAF Lossiemouth. On landing at "Lossie" we went to the Airman's mess for our dinner. Superb!!! But it got better.
On the return home, we flew westwards from Lossie, then headed southwards and flew at low level along Loch Lomond.... and then came the bit that I now sometimes wonder "Did that really happen?" But I know that it did....
As we flew towards Lomond, we were all told to unbuckle from our seats, and formed a loose crowd of lads halfway along the "Herc's" cargo deck. Then as we swept low over the north shore of the Loch the rear cargo ramp was opened, and 30 young Liverpool lads stood dumb founded & open mouthed as we stood unsecured 30 feet from the open rear ramp with the surface of Loch Lomond zooming away from us 100ft below at probably 200 mph !!! Can you imagine modern day health and safety allowing that to happen today?
I wonder how many of those lads that day remember that event as well as I do.. for me it was completely unforgetable.
What a MAGNIFICENT aircraft the "Herc" is.

Sad to say the RAF's last six are retiring from service this week. as a child I used to travel past Lyenham where they were based quite regularly and was pinned to the windows of the car trying to spot them doing circuits day or night, they used to regularly fly over my house here in Wales day and night in a 3 ship sometimes quite low, over the years dropping to pairs then singles as the petrol tokens were reduced, and they even landed regularly on a local beach. Seems like they have always been around really, replaced now by the A400 a noisy beast. The Hercs will be missed.

I was a Loadmaster stationed at RAF Mildenhall for rotation in 1990 and 91. Loved flying over England and Europe. Including 2 weeks in Turkey. 😊

Great story! And also very true, health and safety would most certainly NOT allow this now-a-days

I had to sleep on top of a big medal container when one of the c130s broke down because of an excessive prop leak. Everyone moved over to the working one.

I was a Flight Engineer on the Mighty C-130 for 19 years, 4998 flying hours, exactly 400 combat missions. It is the greatest aircraft ever made! I saw some aircraft I actually flew in your excellent video. Very well done DroneScapes!

    • @hurk130
      @hurk130 Рік тому

@@clank_sinatra It is a different Air Force than when I was in but yes. I would do it again. If you can, Space Command is the future. Aviation is fun but unless you are a Pilot, it is not a great career move for after Air Force life. There are so many great jobs, skills to learn but you will get out of it what you put in it. If you are a bare minimum person, you will get minimum experience and knowledge but if you really apply yourself, go to school and learn everything you can, it is an excellent opportunity.

I flew EC-130 G and Q model from 1972 - 1976 as Naval Aircrew for the TACAMO missions with a 24-7-365 tempo. It was the perfect aircraft for this mission.

If I ever get rich I'm going to buy one just to fly it through hurricanes.

Your suggestion to _"like and subscribe"_ at the END of the video (when viewers are excited and impressed with what they've just experienced) is waaay more powerful and effective than those who request _such mindless actions of faith at the beginning._

I’ve seen many of these incredible planes as a kid and while I served in the Army. I remember watching a exercise at Ft. Bragg where they off loaded different vehicles on to a dirt runway.. but during one poticular drop……. One of them made the drop, as the plane itself hit the runway an slid down the length of runway and crashed into the woods at the end

Like the DC-3, the C-130 Hercules, de Havilland Otter, Beaver, and Twin Otter, great planes are useful for over 70 years, are versatile like no other, and safe. Those 5 planes are 5 of the best ever built, so, so many uses from the day they were built to now! Saw one take a rocket-assisted takeoff at an airshow outside Calgary, about 14 years ago one at the Moose Jaw airfield, we got to go in, our family had a great chat for almost half an hour with the pilots, they were happy to talk to a family of educated, curious and excited people!

Fine video but your gunship specs are a little fuzzy.
As used in Vietnam, the first AC-130A gunships were equipped with 4 each 7.62 mm mini guns and 4 each 20 mm Gatling guns. Later after modification called Pave Pronto, the aft 2, 7.62 mini guns and aft 2, 20mm Gatling guns were deleted and 2 each 40 mm Bofors cannons were installed. When the AC-130E model was brought on
line in Vietnam it was equipped with 1 each 105 MM Howitzer in place of the aft 40 mm Bofors cannon.

Me too; the Royal Thai Air Force uses one every day to resupply Wing 41, Chiang Mai, and I love the distinct growling sound we can hear as it takes off to fly south to Bangkok. No other aircraft from this airport sounds like that.
