      Because oil painting is a very complex process and back in the day you had to get hands on approaches, and learn in guild workshops how to exactly mix portions of paint and layer them exactly, modern art schools are very theoretical and not hands on most of the time.

    • @Handles-R-Lame
      @Handles-R-Lame Рік тому +1

      @@somerandomname3124 (tl:dr- the first paragraph explains the gist)
      see that is just the thing, people make it out to seem like its a very complex process when in reality its just painting what you see. There in lies the problem, we mainly have not learned how to properly "see" and I'm not speaking of any handicap that some may unfortunately possess; because even someone color blind can paint a beautiful picture based purely on values alone.
      So I would go as far as to say that you're mistaken in saying schools don't teach you some essential qualities. As most teach you the at least the basics like values, lights and shadows, shape and form etc. They may not teach you oil painting specifically but those aforementioned skills are used in all media, and not only oil painting.
      Indeed oil painting is not an easy subject to master and most dont ever really master it in the end however it's far from a complex concept, so much so that an ordinary person cannot attain the skill.
      I mean we're not talking about biochemistry, partical physics or quantum computing here. If someone like Bob Ross(and i say this very lightly so..) can inspire generations of new painters then it can't all be that complex to learn the deeper aspects of putting paint on a canvas.
      I say this with utmost respect towards you. Don't take it the wrong way, as I'm just elaborating my thoughts.
      Cheers!

I could not figure out where I was going wrong with the colour of the clouds you have inspired me I am 36 and had a stroke last year and it affected the frontal lobe with affects your creativity. So I have look up painting which I love but didn’t have the time before the stroke now I see life differently, the good in life. I need help like these video’s you post just to figure out basic things like the mixing colours in the clouds as I have forgot a lot of things and remembering the colours to mix is hard so I wrote it all down. This video is a favorite that I find myself enjoying again & again . It's a piece of arwork in & of itself itself .
    But here's a related question : what are your thoughts about using a grey tinted pallette vs. the white one you use in your videos . Do perceptual problems occur when trying to mix transparent colors over the grey ?

    • @PaintingSkies1
      @PaintingSkies1  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you, Peter! I think a grey tinted palette can be very useful when working on a grey panel. It'll probably make mixing easier.
      Applying transparent colors over the grey works different compared to a white background. The colors will interfere with the grey, but you can (after some trial & error) use it to your advantage. Having said that, I would personally only use a grey board for a monochrome underpainting (a grisaille). Adding monochrome highlights and shadows works great on grey surface.

      @@PaintingSkies1 Thanks for sharing your experience with the above . I think I'll stay with the off white pallettes I've been using so far . Now for some coffee & a re-run of "Mixing Colors " to get myself on an even keel .

    Ever consider cutting up your used pallette papers into shapes , pressing these shapes onto another canvas - then peeling them off - leaving " Modern Art" ? Maybe market them under a different name...Ditto onto women's clothing , sneakers , bib overalls etc .
    OR -photoshop them all together for printing on various substrates . Seems a waste to toss such a beautiful creature into the trash . One might even say , a sad lapse of creativity .
    And thanks for yet another great video .
