Riding a great time trial isn't as simple as just riding hard from start to finish. Strategy, pacing and your position on the bike all play a part.
To ride time trials fast, you need to work on your pacing. Some pro cyclists even ride negative splits; they start slow and finish fast.
Specificity rules when it comes to time trialling. Train, and train hard, on your time trial bike in your aero position. This familiarity will pay off. Do as Chris Boardman did and try riding micro-intervals; 10 seconds in your time trial position flat out. It's all about getting good at riding fast on a bike that's vastly different to your regular road bike.

0:18 magnificent transition!
***** nailed that transition
Charlie Bennici absolutely flawless indeed
As an owner of a tt bike, I'm so glad that GCN made a video about tt training!
I did my first 10 Mile TT yesterday and I can definitely say that pacing helps a lot! Doing it on a circuit meant I figured out where to go full gas and where to recover, especially as I had already raced a few times on the circuit. Trying to get as aerodynamic as possible on a road bike was difficult at times but I could see an increase of about 2kmh by lowering my frontal area. Was really happy with my time of 26:58 for my first TT!
What was average kph for that time? Great time
Thanks! It was 36.5kmh
4:07 lol, I love the gags these guys put into these!
In addition to this being a great video, you guys are riding on our one of our favorite roads. I recognized it from the first frame. My wife and I ride it almost every Sunday in the summer and even many Sundays through the winter.
Hope you guys enjoyed your time in California.
I was waiting like a year for this vid! It's finally here and it's AWESOME! You are the best, guys! Sweet-spot intervals FTW! (Ain't know if you get it, but I'm happy).
thank you so much GCN! i don't have a TT-bike but i customized my Giant TCR by adding angle bar, i also bought a skinsuit and now i do 20 km in 32 minutes and 20 seconds... thanks so much!
thats actually good
That intro transition though. Mmmmmmm
Funny thing, my average FTP is actually quite a bit higher in my TT postion compared to my position on the drop bars. I also feel so much more efficient mechanically(aerodynamically of course too). My legs get less fatigued with the same wattage. Its exactly the opposite for some reason.
Still a good video that helped me to increase my FTP and widened my knowledge about TT
Ride this road all the time. Also asked my girlfriend to be my girlfriend out there. haha Glad to see GCN on local roads! Hope the wind was alright!
Thank you GCN. I waiting this for a long time.
some really good info; thanks. I'd say most of your stuff is ride on but now and then like everyone else, I have a question. Here's one you can all thank me for ( I have lots more ) ; mount a mirror down on your handlebars at an angle that allows you to keep your head fully down, and see ahead without raising your head, because the mirror shows you what's ahead. Tucking your head fully down is a huge aero improvement, close to as good as chopping your head clean off. I don't recommend that, as it can be dangerous to ride without a head. As always, stop trying to be funny. You guys are just not cut out for it.
WHERES THE GCN PRESENTER RACE!!
There was talk of a tri-tandem race against Bradley wiggins' hour record in august...haven't heard much since, but it looked super fun! :)
Great video love TT
You've answered my prayers!!
I think you should do a video about circuit racing.
Thanks for this vid guys, it has really improved my time over this season. But my club has just started participating in team time trials. None of us have any experience and I can't find any videos showing us either. So could you lend us a hand and show us how it's done ?
Did you ask DZ Nuts on this one, he was the king at TTs. Great video btw.
is the video shot on Highway 1 in California. The pacific ocean is so beautiful.
Nailing a transition can be... Jesus that was almost perfect
Fantastic!!! Can you do a segment on how to decend and turning on a TT.
Good question! ...I get nervous going over cracks in my aerobars! :)
GCN Does Science
10 second intervals is a good advice. But what is the length of the recovery interval after 10 sec of work?
That's a good question! I've heard for muscle building, the longer you wait the better (because doing more = more muscle growth) but not sure how it applies to speed building?
u can try 10/50 splits
Awesome videos
0:54 Physics fail! CdA is the Drag Coefficient multiplied by the frontal area. Also not sure that coefficiency is a word.
they are obviously not physicians. :)
u mean physicist ..?
i guess the tone of the joke was lost in text. :)
Hands down, top of forearms parallel to the ground, elbows together is faster in crosswinds, afaik not tested in windtunnels, suggest using 3° angle'of'attack setup both ways to put wattage on it.
With upper arms 90° or more, suggest ~12°-15° opens the chest for breathing.
Ymmv🍺
I've never heard of clubs in France organising weekly TTs. It would of been nice if you treated the subject of riding a TT on your road bike because we don't all own TT bikes.
Great video as always otherwise. Do you need a French correspondent by the way ?
Si, watch your rear quick release
Heart rate seems to be obsolete now theres power meters. My national level 1 coach had us do heart rate x distance.
Need an advice here!! When putting my arms on the handle bar in that aerodynamic position at 2:50, my arms occasionally slips due to the sweat and I almost crash. Is there anything or any way I can prevent that from happening?
Thank you :)
CrazyPiPo No, you have to be really careful doing that.
Buy some of those banned cinelli bars and use those!
Global Cycling Network Alright. After that slipping experience I started to wipe my arms on my kits before going into that position. No problem so far. Just a bit nervous.
Cinelli I'll look into that. Thank you.
CrazyPiPo I use Control Tech bars, they're short compact aero bars that safely put me into that position, $95 on amazon
You guys in Ventura California? Santa Barbra, Ca.
0:33 Simon! What is this?? Riding on the flat with the flap on your helmet up? You need to take a closer look at Dan!
Is Si still using Tom's bike? :D
How on earth is stretching going to improve my Time Trialing, I hear your ask?
HA HA HA HA HA HA... anyone else reminded of this?
- The... Now, that's another story. The impportant thing here is that we get
to the part where you ask me how I'm gonna get down to the shore.
- Oh, how you gettin' down to the shore?
- Funny you should ask, I've got a car now..
- Ah wow, how'd ya get a car?
- Oh, my folks drove it up here from the Baahamas.
- You're kidding!
- I must be, the Bahamas are islands. Okay,, the important thing here is
that, uh, you ask me what kinda car it is.
- Uh uh, what kinda car do ya' got?
- I've got a bitchin' Camaro...
Love it

Practice makes permanent, not perfect.
I was thinking the same thing! I prefer: "Perfect practice makes perfect" :)
where did you film this?
Does it make sense to train with all the TT gear like aerohelmet and so on?
yes it does
Sorry guys, great video as usual but the surf is going off behind you. Take a rest day and get out there!
I just bought a canyon speedmax with ultegra di2
but my problem is i dont know what wheels shld i get.I am using zipp 404's and ive just started tt biking
+Saniy auf You almost have bike equipment pinnacle, you can use 808 zipp since you seem to have insane buget
Simon Rano i heard that 808 takes abit more energy to push
a bit less reactive on acceleration because of rotating weight but easier to maintain at higher speed. GCN made a test of them. In flat and low wind conditions go for disk and 3/5 spoked wheels or deep section. Hilly or windy mid section. The brand doesn't really matter all top range wheels are suitable for pros so they are great. Just match any wheelset of pro triathlete or TT rider and your gone
what is the music in the background?
spelling mistake at 1:31 to
Majka!
1:32 too*
Why do pros train behind a motorcycle? What is the ideea behind it?
Magor Bárócz it closely replicates the power demands of road race. It's quite dangerous though so we wouldn't recommend it.
What about exhaust fumes?
What song is that at 1:10?
seb wilson The Lower 48 - Long time coming!
P to the R to the O...
poor man 3:08
And don't forget the EPO, test, and blood bags.
Can you stop making video's in front of a nice surf break. Way to distracting! ;)
I really think there should be women GCN presenters there are women cyclists you know
+plumster33 Give them a suggestion
Victoria Pendleton
Done
My time trials consist of sitting on my couch and eating pizza
Where did you film this?
Near Santa Barbara.
Global Cycling Network Thanks
+Global Cycling Network It looked like Highway 1 or Pacific Coast Highway (PCH). Glad to know I thought correctly
