I just got my first Whippet, first dog since the one I had when I was a little kid, a boston terrier. I absolutely love how whippets play fetch - such retrieval/sight hounds. "Looooooook at me! I got it! I saw it, I ran and got it, now I'm gonna run around for a bit and show you this awesome thing I retrieved, then I'm gonna come over to you and drop it! Cus I got it for you!!!!" I lovemy doggo. Long live Alfred! Named after Alfred the Great of Wessex!
Brilliant video. Not showing that your dog is better than others but just repetitive recalls and persistent love and attention is what works. Well done. 👍🏻👍🏻
Living in a rural arable farming area, I've been able to bring up my whippet off-lead most of the time (and he gets it when its time to clip up). But there are wild deer which he goes nuts for to chase and could get himself in serious trouble if they ever turned around. So I purchased a lure machine to redirect its urges. He and his sighthound mates couldn't be happier even though they are bright enough to know its a bag on a reel of string.
He is such a beauty ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️ And I find it very good that you make it clear where the weak/strong points are regarding such a beautiful runner and hunter! For example that you say you pick fenced areas or areas without too much going on. As much as I love to see these beautiful dogs running, for me as forest lover looking for lost places this would not work, as my darling would have to be fairly uninterested in other wildlife around him, or I would constantly be in search of him. It is so important, as you have said, to understand that there are thousands of years of breeding in working dogs such as Louis, and he cannot go against his genes. Greetings from Berlin Germany 🤗
Our much-loved whippy Maggie (who also happens to be our very first dog) passed away very recently about a week before Xmas. We picked up her ashes from the Vet on Xmas day, and ever since then I’ve been looking on UA-cam for Whippet videos to try to cheer myself up. It’s really wonderful/comforting to see you, and sweet Louis sharing such a wonderfully strong bond together. Also, I’m surprised to see Louis be so brilliant at fetching... our dear Maggie refused to return toys/balls, but her recall was particularly fab after the puppy stage.
My whippet Banjo is 14 weeks old and I am so proud of him. He has learnt so much in the 6weeks we have been together. He is a wonderful companion and has a lot of love to give. He has the colouring of a Tasmanian Tiger which is most appropriate as we live in Tasmania! Occasionally I carry him in a shoulder and people ask me about my “ rescue joey “!
Hi Neve Banjo sounds great 👍 you will have lot of great times together 😀 thanks again for watching please subscribe and check out our other videos of our adventures with Louie Very best regards Louie and his two poo pickers 👍❤️😀🐾🍺🍟
Hi Robert just keep going it can take a lot of time I play the game with Louie about 5 times a day just the same thing time after time Best of luck with Dave, Jo and Louie 👍😀🐾🍺🍟
Starting indoors is helpful. I train my Whippet mix with a ball and I train him in retrieving in the manner of game retrieval. Make sure you hold the ball to your eye and force him to make eye contact before you throw the ball. I say "go get it" when I throw the ball and then pat my thigh and say "come here". Whether he drops the ball at my feet or I grab it from his mouth, I say "give it". When I am done with a retrieval session, I drop the ball on the ground and say "all yours". This is overkill for a pet but still worth it to get them to a higher and more accurate standard of compliance. This method is designed to train dogs to retrieve small game and not eat it in the process. the part where you drop the ball and say "it's all yours" is a way of letting the dog know when he gets his share of the kill. Were I to take my dog rabbit hunting, he would get one of the rabbits all to himself at the end of the hunt. It is a means of triggering some very old instinctive behavior patterns that is pleasing for the dog. Dogs didn't evolve to just sit around all day and be petted! If you want a happy dog, you have to find ways of tickling those ancient behavioral pathways. It's also good to train your dog to bring mice and rats to you instead of eating them on the spot and possibly getting sick from the vermin. I have similar philosophies about raising children. Technology has evolved a lot faster than we do. I am a proponent of teaching children how to hunt and survive in the wild. I believe in martial arts training and contact sports. Without such activities, I know I would have been bored and depressed growing up. Whether or not I use those skills in life is rather irrelevant. My reptilian brain demanded as much and my self confidence soared every time I did a flying tackle on the rugby pitch. Then there was fencing... There is nothing more rewarding than beating a much older and more experienced opponent with pure resolve!
Excellent video for whippet owners, very helpful common sense advice. Jason our whippet is definitely a foodie as is Eddie our Greyhound and a squeaky toy is really helpful to get their attention 😊
G’day to the three of U you’ve trained him well and you are so right with the repetitive commands. I do the same with Sasha as you do with Louie, he’s a great little dog seeing him with his big eyes ball in mouth with his tongue to one side was priceless. Great video especially the intro with him sitting on your chair with you, kind regards John.
Hi John hope you are well and thanks again for watching Louie is such a character And he’s great at training us two 🤔 Very best regards Louie and his trained poo pickers 👍😀🐾🍺🍟
I have a whippet. Great on the lead. Perfect. Where we live is surrounded by forest. Its where we walk, daily.......off the lead, he's amazing, pure hunter, has absolutely no interest in "balls", only squirrels, rabbits and foxes....
Your video made me laugh out loud. I too have a fabulous whippet. His recall is as selective as he wants it to be. They are the best dogs in the world.
Lol you will know whippets well 👍 yes I agree they are the best dogs 😀 thanks for watching please check out our other videos of our adventures with Louie best regards Louie and his two poo pickers 👍🍺😀🐾🍟❤️
Having had my four-year-old whippet for two weeks she is slowly getting used to a routine. I am having problems with her running up to dogs to say hello. She is slowly getting better when I say no and pop her onto her leash until the dog is out of sight. She understands no and stays, however, I have to constantly say come when I recall her. She does play but loses interest in ball throwing. Brilliant video of an obedient whippet.
I have the same issue my pup is 6 months. He loves other dogs and will run off with them and I call him back and he doesn't come back. If we are on our own he is fine but other dogs he is off.
Thanks for this Louie, it's great to see how you have trained your Dad to do what you want. The humans are really daft thinking that they train us. See you soon.Lots of licks and bum sniffs from Rum & Tor 🐶🐶
I've done exactly the same thing with a treat instead of a ball a whistle is always best as it can be heard a distance away in windy conditions. My girl just isn't interested in chasing a ball, she loves a chase with other dogs. Only time I have trouble is when she has a squirrel treed.
Very helpfull this is exactly how mine is. He's still young so is easily sidetracked but he has supprised me how fast he has picked things up like house training and sit stay leave I've had him 5 weeks he's 16 weeks old
Just wanted to share something I happened on by chance while searching for how to keep my dogs safe off leash. It’s called the “Really Reliable Recall” training protocol and it is perfect for sight hounds (or any breed) as it was created by Leslie Nelson, a sight hound aficionado. I found it on Dog Wise in downloadable booklet and video-I’m not affiliated with this website or the training protocol in any way, just sharing something I found helpful. In short, it teaches the dog a conditioned response or reflex of whipping the head around from any distraction and running straight back to you. You train under controlled conditions where the dog will always be successful, and avoid using it in real life-except in a true emergency, in order to keep it sharp and ready for emergency use. I’ve trained two dogs using the RRR with excellent results that twice saved us from a potential wreck involving horses. It’s great fun to train, all positive, and the dogs loved it too. Plus (and this is really big!) it makes your everyday recall stronger. Highly recommend. Thank you s for sharing your whippet journeys with us! Your dogs are clearly so well loved and cared for, and your landscape is absolutely spectacular. Your information is so pleasantly delivered too. What a great spokesperson you are for whippets!
Louie is very good with his recall. I have a whippet also called Louie, his recall is fine until he sees another dog then he's gone no matter how far away they are and he won't leave them alone. I'm yet to find a toy that interests him more than chasing dogs, considering a ball on a string after watching this!
This ball on a string work very well it also give of a whistling sound that he also like too I did start with the ball and treats when he recalled with a ball Best of luck with your Louie 👍😀🐾
Cracking video, I am in the middle off training my two lab boys at the minute, as my old boy passed away , didn’t realise it was so hard with two, but I must say it’s a joy to watch you two in harmony cheers.
It’s like most things the more you do it the easy it gets with Louie being a rescue dog it did take a lot on time to calm him down but he’s just great now 👍 best of luck with your two 👍🍟😀🐾🍺
Out of all the females rescuers “Hope for Paws” I love Loretta demeanor... she is gentle ...full of passions for the dogs. Keep up the good work!!! 2:44
LOL excellent well what ever works 👍 thanks for watching please subscribe and check out our other videos of our adventures with Louie best regards Louie and his poo pickers 👍😀🐾🍺🍟
Thanks Berry he’s a good lad thanks for watching please subscribe and check out our videos of our adventures with Louie very best regards Louie and his poo pickers 👍❤️😀🐾🍺🍟
I am glad I found your whippet videos, I’ve already bought a Ruffwear harness because of your recommendation and I’m really keen on getting my whippet to improve his recall, Thankyou!
I love these videos! Not sure which one of you I like more... YOU or Louis. You're both fantastic. Thank you for sharing. Get my baby blue Whippet girl on Monday. Can't wait to teach her all the tricks you and Louis know. Just brilliant.
@@onemanandhiswhippet Haha! Yes. I fear I mistakenly grabbed a box of qty 300 Big Bear Poo bags. haha She might need to grow into those. Will keep an eye out for more videos...currently my fav UA-cam channel. Thank you for all the amazing advice. All the best! cg
Got some good tips from you re whistling when he picks up the ball to encourage coming back, which my one year old still struggles with, he gets bored and leaves the ball a long way off because he’s seen something more interesting. I shall try your method now. Thanks.
Thanks for watching 👍 What I’ve found is with Whippet they settle down around the age of 3 re the training I also play the recall game with treats in the house using the same commands all the time this helps a lot when you get outside Hopeful get there please let me know how you get on Best regards Louie and his poo pickers 🤔👍😀🐾🍺🍟
At first, thanks for the amazing video! I love Whippets, we always had em, when i was little but even now we have one. He is 5 years old but to be honest i never did any training with him, he grew up with a dobberman(not with us) and he is always very very full of tension and he is also shy and scared(high hairs on back) when he see others dogs, i keep him short because i don't want him to snap, most of time he just bark when he see dogs even on a distance, but barking is becoming less. But i never did any training with him, not this recall training either which i would love so much for him, because i think he would have the most amazing time in his lovely dog life ever! But here in The Netherlands where i'm at there is not really a safe place where i can let him run(as far as i know, because dogs can walk loose) ps: when he is with my mother in the woods he love to be loose with my other small dog and they love it and listen. But he don't run that far behind a ball, you have a tip? Sorry for the long message i'm from Holland and maybe i explain myself to slow sorry.
Our Dandy was a racer, with similiar behavour as your dog,our Cain :with the looks of yours; is a showdog and totaly different: never running and almost no signs of chasing !
My Saluki comes back every time when its just us...but if something random pops up like a runner or a dog...he never listens, one time he followed a runner out of sight and was lost for over an hour; so frustrating. I'd love to see that runner again and thank him for his help. T*at.
Treat are a good way for training recall use them every time you go out and keep the training going you can also do the same training in the house too 👍👍
Oh thank you 🙏 there’s a play list with all my videos in called living with a whippet If you have any questions best to PM me on Instagram @whippetonemanandhis I don’t know if you seen our recent videos but we have a whippet puppy now too Thanks again for watching 👍🙏🐾
Great video! My family and I are considering getting a Whippet and found your video. I recognised you’re accent and then the field you’re both on! I’m from Cottingham and my wife Kirk Ella but we now live in Ilkley!
Thanks Jon yes we did live in Anlaby but we have moved to the middle of the North York Moors do check out our new videos of our whippet puppy Rosie too 🙏👍😍🐾
Great video Dave, I really need to find a fenced off enclosure to train my deafy lol. As I was saying before, the rules change when he gets a taste of freedom, off into the sunset and his favourite toy is no match for that :( Only dog I ever had to do that plus the only deaf dog I've ever had. I see him as a dog with little future or ending up with three legs ( traffic accident ) if I'm not careful. Anyone who knows him agrees with me on this and I'd hate him to be the cause of a serious accident, it would be hard to forgive myself as it would be my fault knowing his want to roam. Great to see how you trained Louie Dave, he's a great dog! repetitive training is definitely the best kind. 👍👍👍
Hi there yes you do need to find somewhere 👍 hope you find it soon we are lucky the field we use is only a 15min walk away so works well for us Thanks again for watching very best regards Louie and his poo pickers 🤔👍😀🐾🍺🍟
I find YOUR LINK BETWEEN BOTH OF YOU SO ADORABLE !!! Your Lou is so Beautiful and funny but i try to do the same with our Iggy without success... Like to look again and again as long as you enjoy to do it!!!
Thanks it’s the only way that works for me (and the dogs I’ve had) in many situations it the person that needs the training first 🤔 Thanks again for watching very best regards Louie and his poo pickers 👍😀🐾🍺🍟
I've been lucky my 8 month puppy loves to recall her ball but naturally whippets love to run after other dogs or birds so they need to learn to behave at times ha
Hi Mark yep just keep at it and you will get there the key with Whippets is they do change and calm down at the age of 3 to 4 years and all the training you are doing now will then really pay of for you 👍 If you’ve not already please subscribe and check out our other videos of our adventures with Louie Thanks again for watching very best regards and best of luck Dave, Jo and Louie 👍🍟😀🍺🐾
Phew, I'm relieved now I've watched this. I thought you might have been experimenting with implanting a fake memory of a trip to Mars into Louie's brain 😲
Hi there they are not that bad not as bad as labradors or spaniels they don’t like to be left alone fir a long time but are very intelligent dog are a quick to learn They do calm down a lot when they get to about 3 Hope that helps Best regards 👍😀🐾🍺🍟
Very interesting video, and I take your point about dog owners trying to train their dog by having a conversation with them. ;-) I'm curious whether you think all whippets and lurchers will chase prey ... it's the only reluctance I have, as I am limited around here in terms of open areas to let a dog off lead. I also am concerned about dealing with a massacred squirrel (or cat)! Does Louie search out wildlife in the garden? I have frogs in the undergrowth in my garden - similar scenario; would be mortified if a frog got marmalised.
Hi David thanks for your comment 👍 I’ve never see any sighthound not Want to choose something Louis does like to chase squirrels and never catch them and is not over fond of cats too however we do have frogs in our garden quite a lot and Louis is scared of them (and it is funny to see) The other thing to consider is most dogs particular retrievers and spaniels will also want to Chase things and a lot of controlling that is down to good training from an early age Hope that helps please check out my other living with a whippet videos they may also help you. All I can say is of all the different breeds and shapes of dogs I would also take a whippet due to their intelligence their nature and easy to look after . Thanks again for watching very best regards Louie and his poo pickers 👍🍟😀🐾🍺❤️
@@onemanandhiswhippet Grand, thanks for your (quick!) reply. I was owned by a rescue Labrador for 14 years, and now I am retired wish to find another canine companion. I agree with you about training, and Suzy (my rescue Lab) was very well-behaved thanks to my persistence and her good nature. I do a lot of urban cycling as well as hiking and one reason I'm thinking of a whippet is the possibility of fitting a basket to the front of my urban steed so I can take my new pal along with me (have looked into various safe methods for transporting dogs on a bike). A Labrador would be too big to attempt transporting by two wheels! I love the calmness of whippets - Suzy (my Lab) was like a piece of the furniture except when running miles around the hills with me. She had been rescued after an abuse situation, which I think was why she was so subdued and very "passive". I've been working my way through your videos and am enjoying seeing how Louie fits in with your adventures. He's a star. It's that combination of million miles an hour outside but chilled out inside that I really like about the whippet. Everything I've seen in your videos encourages me (and makes me laugh regularly!)
Thanks again David our old whippet in his lost months with us use to travel in dog trailer on the back of my mountain bike it also converted into a pushchair for him if needed This enabled us to keep doing our adventures and taking with us till the final days Your Suzy sound like she had a lovely life (well done) hope you find your new best friend soon have you considered contacting some rescue centres they sometimes let you test dogs out to see what the temperament is like ? I’m going to get the bank trailer out again and try Louis in it to see how we gets on I will do a video of it when I do get it out Thanks again for watching very best regards us two and that skinny dog 👍🍟😀🐾🍺❤️
Well trained owner.. My Jack Russel is a good Iron monger.. every time i kick him in the ass, he makes a bolt for the door.. I am glad Louie has got you under control.. All the best from us 3..
Lovely boy. I have a 6 month old, he loves going off lead and is normally good however if he sees another dog he runs after them as he loves to play. He ignores my calls when he's chasing other dogs. I think I'll try the whistle. Also have you any videos on getting them not to scavenge for food mealtimes are stressful as he's constantly trying to get to the kids dinner and if we shut him in kitchen he scratches the door. Many thanks
Hi Kim sorry I don’t have a video on that scenario However it is the same process repetitive training small steps every time he tries to go to the food removing away sit him down and be strong with him and say no or bed keep repeating this time after time after time and it will work 👍😀🐾
Let's say you always had to keep him on a leash at all times do you think he would still be happy? I want to get a whippet, I'm a 100% commited to taking it out each day to the park for exercise as long as it needs. but what it might do to other animals if it runs of scares me a bit. I will take it to dog school but if he still has poor recall I just want to know if it's still ok to keep him on the leash all the time at a park. Im an avid runner so will do my best to run with him but this will obviously be at a human pace.
Hi there yes it will just become the norm for your dog my two whippets are on a lead most of the time and do long walks and have a great time 👍 with a Whippet you are best to use a harness tho 👍 hope that helps there’s lots more Whippet videos on this channel that may help you 🙏👍😍
Great video! I'm reading loads about whippets and trying to figure out if it would be a dog for me because I'd very much like to get one at the end of next year. Recall is a thing that scares me the most since I live in a town that doesn't have huge, securely fenced areas where I could freely enter with the dog. What I am wondering though, is can he get bored by chasing the ball? Or get bored of getting special treats? Not overall, but in a day? E.g. do you have a time period after which your whippet goes back on the lead in order to prevent him from thinking "ok, I've chased this ball enough, I might chase that pidgeon/explore those bushes now"? If so, would you theoretically be able to combine his favourite toy and favourite treat to prolong the timeframe in which he is focused solely on you?
Hi there yes Whippets and depending on the Whippet can be difficult to train recall purely down to the nature of the dog they are sighthounds and love to run after things. Louie is very good he will run after his ball for quite some time before he starts to get bored then it’s back on the lead and off we go. You’re not going to get the same recall as you would with a spaniel or a Labrador. However they are lovely dogs and we wouldn’t have anything else . Best of luck check out our other videos with Louie they may help you 👍 the others thing to do (when you can) he’s spend some time with somebody who’s got a whippet or a greyhound they are very similar nature. Good luck 👍😀🐾
@@onemanandhiswhippet thanks for the tips! Yeah, Louie seems to be a very good boy, and seeing them run is the number 1 reason why I'd want one, apart from them being great family house dogs. I actually did reach out to one breeder and he offered me to join him on a walk and run with his whippets to see what they're like in person. They are extremely rare here in Croatia, I think I only saw two IG's in my entire life.
Hi There pleased you found it useful and exciting times new puppy 👍 if you haven’t check out our other videos videos that may help you Please Let us know how you get on with your new best friend 👍 Very best regards Louie and his two poo pickers 👍😀🐾🍟🍺
We have a friend with a 9 month old whippet. Whilst she’s a nice dog, she sees you coming with your dog from across the dog park and sprints up to us, ignoring the owner. It’s really not nice because she slams into our dogs and our knees, it really hurts. I wish it was trained as well as your whippet
It’s all to do with how you train them it needs to be as early as possible People also tend to be to soft with them too which doesn’t help A long training lead is useful to help train recall Hope that helps 👍
im looking into getting a whippet. contacted a few owners in the area. all that worries me is the winter. up here in norway it can get pretty chilly. but i suppose there are clothes for that :D. honestly i cannot wait to get my first dog
Hi Elion Whippets do feel the cold but it great full dressing the up to keep the nice and warm Louie and my last Whippet Ben 🙏 both have climb mountains with me in the snow in winter and loved it you just need to keep them well wrapped up in wind and waterproof clothing and they just love been next to a warm fire when you get home 👍😀🐾
@@onemanandhiswhippet thanks so much for your reply. funny how i was originally looking at staffys when i suddenly just fell in love with some whippet videos i saw online. studied some guides on the internet and now i can happily say i've sealed the deal and adopting a whippet. im watching your videos to see how you deal with them so i can get a headsup for what to expect and such. thanks a bunch
Whippets are great dogs, I love mine a lot, but if it is your first dog, prepare yourself, you will need a lot of patience with a puppy. Whippets are very sensitive dogs with whom only positive training works. I suggest you to find a trainer to help you, it helps a lot. 😊
Louie darling Louie. You are a handsom boy.would love to send you a pack of shmakos. Have you got a p o box!! P s keep working with Dad on his recall and mum with her chips. Xx

Hi! Great videos! I am picking up our Whippet puppy (Oden)10/10/20 . Where did you find his ball?? I am in the USA and have not seen anything like this. Is there a brand name I can look up? Thank you!
Hi Annie many thanks do check out our over video of our adventure with Louie We get out whippet puppy on Monday 👍 This is the link to the ball www.ebay.co.uk/itm/324085037043 👍😀🐾

Lots of excellent info, thankyou. My whippet is a small three legged girl, 12 years old, I am having trouble finding coats to stay on straight and that are not cut to low to keep her one front leg unrestricted. Do you have some coat recommendations?
How does Laurie react to other dogs? Mine is OK for the most part, but if he sees another dog, he's off like a cannon ball, and I usually have to go where he has gone to get him back - and what he covers in 10 seconds is a long walk for me. Another dog is _always_ more attractive than anything I can offer him. He used to be the same with strangers, but he's much better now - though I think that's probably a function of getting older. He's around 18 months now.
Hi Mike what you will find with whippet they do settle down a lot at the age of 3 or 4 You just need to keep up the same repetitive Recall training and you will get there Thanks for watching please check out our other videos of our adventures with Louie 👍😀🐾
So you think that if you do not have an enclosed area to walk then you shouldn’t let them off the lead? I’ve been debating getting a whippet puppy for a long time now but the only sticking point is that although I have plenty of local places for walks, none are without access to roads etc.
It is always a risk it depends on you and how well you train your whippet tho 🙏 some whippet’s are great on recall others just don’t respond 😳 hope that helps 👍😀🐾
I wish Jasper was this good. We have tried everything from toys to his favourite treats, but once he’s outside he just does not care. It’s like he’s blind and deaf! Can you give me any advice?
Hi Lee have you tried a long training lead so he can’t run of and practice recall we treats before he’s had food to help him concentrate on the food too Let me know how you get on 👍 best of luck Dave, Jo and Louie 👍😀🐾🍺🍟

Thanks for showing how simple recall can be with a whippet.
No problem you will see in this video just how good Rosie is at recall 🙏👍😍 ua-cam.com/video/EpsowX6hbzY/v-deo.html
Hes beautiful , the terrain is beautiful, and these are such good tips, they may seem simple, but sometimes thats all it takes!
Many thanks it works for Louie and I
Thanks again for watching very best regards Louie and his poo pickers 👍😀🐾🍺🍟
Louie, you're a star. Such a clever lad.
Many thanks 👍
Excellent video for whippet owners, very helpful common sense advice. Jason our whippet is definitely a foodie as is Eddie our Greyhound and a squeaky toy is really helpful to get their attention 😊
Thanks Lisa hope you are well
Thanks for watching very best regards Dave, Jo and Louie 👍😀🐾🍺🍟
My Staffi used to carry his ball home from the park!! So cute!
It’s a good skill and soots you getting hands covered in dog slobber too
Best regards us 3 up north 👍❤️😀🐾🍺🍟
Louie is just awesome and it's pretty clear you both have a wonderful time together 🤗💖🌷😊😊😊😊 y'all make me smile ty 💖
Thanks Joy as always ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😀😀😀😀😀❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😀🐾🍺🍟❤️
G’day to the three of U you’ve trained him well and you are so right with the repetitive commands. I do the same with Sasha as you do with Louie, he’s a great little dog seeing him with his big eyes ball in mouth with his tongue to one side was priceless. Great video especially the intro with him sitting on your chair with you, kind regards John.
Hi John hope you are well and thanks again for watching Louie is such a character
And he’s great at training us two 🤔
Very best regards Louie and his trained poo pickers 👍😀🐾🍺🍟
He's a good boy! I have a senior whippet x bedlington, and a puppy whippet x greyhound. I'm absolutely in love with sighthounds
Thanks for watching Lauren they are just the best friend you can have 🙏❤️ please check out our other videos of our adventures with Louie 👍😀🐾
Whippet x greyhound - What a great cross! How big did the dog get?
@@GreyhoundHomecare She's currently 6 months old and 22" up to the shoulder :)
I have a whippet. Great on the lead. Perfect. Where we live is surrounded by forest. Its where we walk, daily.......off the lead, he's amazing, pure hunter, has absolutely no interest in "balls", only squirrels, rabbits and foxes....
👍😍😍
You will get there just keep going 👍 thanks for watching 👍😀🐾
I have the same issue my pup is 6 months. He loves other dogs and will run off with them and I call him back and he doesn't come back. If we are on our own he is fine but other dogs he is off.
Thanks for this Louie, it's great to see how you have trained your Dad to do what you want. The humans are really daft thinking that they train us. See you soon.Lots of licks and bum sniffs from Rum & Tor 🐶🐶
Well thanks you boys bring on the dog revolution Louie and his poo pickers 👍❤️😀🐾🍺🍟
I have just got a whippet and your tips are so helpful! Thank you so much for sharing this!
So pleased you like our videos and your in for a lot of fun and love too thanks again for watching 👍🐾😀
Thanks!
Greetings from the US. Thank you for this. Love your channel.
Oh many thanks 🙏
Louis is a lovely little dog 😄👍🏻 Trev
Thanks Trev 👍😀🐾🍺🍟
I've done exactly the same thing with a treat instead of a ball a whistle is always best as it can be heard a distance away in windy conditions. My girl just isn't interested in chasing a ball, she loves a chase with other dogs. Only time I have trouble is when she has a squirrel treed.
lol 😂 yep if you check out our whippet puppy videos you will see our Rosie is fantastic at recall 👍👍
Great video Dave and Louie
Thanks Dave 👍😀🐾🍺🍟
Very helpfull this is exactly how mine is. He's still young so is easily sidetracked but he has supprised me how fast he has picked things up like house training and sit stay leave I've had him 5 weeks he's 16 weeks old
👍👍 training every day is the key 🙏😍
Oh thanks I will check it out 🙏👍😍
He's a clever boy dave.. Thanks for sharing 😊🤙
Thanks Adam I just need his to learn how to pull a pint 🍺 now 🤔
Thanks again for watching mate all the best Louie and his poo pickers 👍😀🐾🍺🍟
Hahaha 🤣 likewise Dave 🤙
Louie is very good with his recall. I have a whippet also called Louie, his recall is fine until he sees another dog then he's gone no matter how far away they are and he won't leave them alone. I'm yet to find a toy that interests him more than chasing dogs, considering a ball on a string after watching this!
This ball on a string work very well it also give of a whistling sound that he also like too
I did start with the ball and treats when he recalled with a ball
Best of luck with your Louie 👍😀🐾
He responds well Dave, good training
I think it’s Louie that’s training me 👍❤️😀🐾🍺🍟
Cracking video, I am in the middle off training my two lab boys at the minute, as my old boy passed away , didn’t realise it was so hard with two, but I must say it’s a joy to watch you two in harmony cheers.
It’s like most things the more you do it the easy it gets with Louie being a rescue dog it did take a lot on time to calm him down but he’s just great now 👍 best of luck with your two 👍🍟😀🐾🍺

Got some good tips from you re whistling when he picks up the ball to encourage coming back, which my one year old still struggles with, he gets bored and leaves the ball a long way off because he’s seen something more interesting. I shall try your method now. Thanks.
Thanks for watching 👍 What I’ve found is with Whippet they settle down around the age of 3 re the training I also play the recall game with treats in the house using the same commands all the time this helps a lot when you get outside
Hopeful get there please let me know how you get on
Best regards Louie and his poo pickers 🤔👍😀🐾🍺🍟
Just discovered this great channel. Looks like Louie has a wonderful life, its great to see. I love dogs.
Louie is just a great friend full of fun 👍 many thanks for watching 👍😀🐾🍺
He's such a good boy, I pray mine becomes as well behaved.
Just keep going and you will both get there 👍🐾😀
At first, thanks for the amazing video! Sorry for the long message i'm from Holland and maybe i explain myself to slow sorry.
lol i was at 5:25 and u already gave the tip haha thanks for the video!
Lol 😂 many thanks for watching 👍 do check out our other videos of our adventures with Louie 👍🐾😀

Great video, just got a lurcher, very helpful!
Thanks Alex there’s a lot more whippet videos on my channel that may help you 👍🙏😍
My Saluki comes back every time when its just us...but if something random pops up like a runner or a dog...he never listens, one time he followed a runner out of sight and was lost for over an hour; so frustrating. I'd love to see that runner again and thank him for his help. T*at.
Treat are a good way for training recall use them every time you go out and keep the training going you can also do the same training in the house too 👍👍
I do like Daryl’s new name for your channel. One Whippet and his poo picker 💩🐾🤣
Louie was a good boy making this video despite being whistled at 👍🏼🐾❤️

Thanks Jon yes we did live in Anlaby but we have moved to the middle of the North York Moors do check out our new videos of our whippet puppy Rosie too 🙏👍😍🐾
whippets are the best always had them x
Oh yes 👍 🐾😀
Great video Dave, I really need to find a fenced off enclosure to train my deafy lol. As I was saying before, the rules change when he gets a taste of freedom, off into the sunset and his favourite toy is no match for that :(
Only dog I ever had to do that plus the only deaf dog I've ever had.
Hi there yes you do need to find somewhere 👍 hope you find it soon we are lucky the field we use is only a 15min walk away so works well for us

Well thank you Lee 👍🐾😀
Great advice Dave, 😂 single word commands and consistency. Simple but most dog owners don’t get it 😂😂
Thanks it’s the only way that works for me (and the dogs I’ve had) in many situations it the person that needs the training first 🤔
Thanks again for watching very best regards Louie and his poo pickers 👍😀🐾🍺🍟
Wow I wish I had open fields such as these to play with my dogs! I'm in Los Angeles, nowhere we can play long fetch
Oh no you need to move to Yorkshire check out our photos on Instagram @whippetonemanandhis thanks for watching 👍🐾😀
I've been lucky my 8 month puppy loves to recall her ball but naturally whippets love to run after other dogs or birds so they need to learn to behave at times ha
Hi Mark yep just keep at it and you will get there the key with Whippets is they do change and calm down at the age of 3 to 4 years and all the training you are doing now will then really pay of for you 👍
If you’ve not already please subscribe and check out our other videos of our adventures with Louie
Thanks again for watching very best regards and best of luck Dave, Jo and Louie 👍🍟😀🍺🐾
Phew, I'm relieved now I've watched this. I thought you might have been experimenting with implanting a fake memory of a trip to Mars into Louie's brain 😲
LOL I hope I didn’t have you running back with a ball when I Whistled 🤔 thanks again for watching very best regards Louie and his poo pickers 👍😀🐾🍺🍟
great video. Quick question, how are whippets as pups? pretty tough to house train? I'm guessing they are chewers of just about everything
Hi there they are not that bad not as bad as labradors or spaniels they don’t like to be left alone fir a long time but are very intelligent dog are a quick to learn
They do calm down a lot when they get to about 3
Hope that helps
Best regards 👍😀🐾🍺🍟
Very interesting video, and I take your point about dog owners trying to train their dog by having a conversation with them. ;-)
I'm curious whether you think all whippets and lurchers will chase prey ... it's the only reluctance I have, as I am limited around here in terms of open areas to let a dog off lead. I also am concerned about dealing with a massacred squirrel (or cat)! Does Louie search out wildlife in the garden? I have frogs in the undergrowth in my garden - similar scenario; would be mortified if a frog got marmalised.
Hi David thanks for your comment 👍 I’ve never see any sighthound not Want to choose something Louis does like to chase squirrels and never catch them and is not over fond of cats too however we do have frogs in our garden quite a lot and Louis is scared of them (and it is funny to see) The other thing to consider is most dogs particular retrievers and spaniels will also want to Chase things and a lot of controlling that is down to good training from an early age
Hope that helps please check out my other living with a whippet videos they may also help you.
Thanks again David our old whippet in his lost months with us use to travel in dog trailer on the back of my mountain bike it also converted into a pushchair for him if needed
This enabled us to keep doing our adventures and taking with us till the final days
Your Suzy sound like she had a lovely life (well done) hope you find your new best friend soon have you considered contacting some rescue centres they sometimes let you test dogs out to see what the temperament is like ? I’m going to get the bank trailer out again and try Louis in it to see how we gets on I will do a video of it when I do get it out
Thanks again for watching very best regards us two and that skinny dog 👍🍟😀🐾🍺❤️
Well trained owner.. My Jack Russel is a good Iron monger.. every time i kick him in the ass, he makes a bolt for the door.. I am glad Louie has got you under control.. All the best from us 3..
Lol thanks Kev best regards Louie and his poo pickers 👍😀🐾🍺🍟
Hi😉 great upload
Thanks Donna 👍😀🐾❤️🍺🍟
They are extremely rare here in Croatia, I think I only saw two IG's in my entire life.
filips989 👍 best of luck finding your new best friend 👍😀🐾
Really great video! We’re getting our first greyhound puppy next week and was a bit worried about training recall

Very best regards Louie and his two poo pickers 👍😀🐾🍟🍺
Thank you! I definitely will! I’ve been looking for as much advice as I can 😊 can’t wait for her to join our crazy house!
CatlinEB good for you 👍 happy days
I've had four whippets, not one of them has been interested in chasing or fetching a ball. Small furry creatures are another matter entirely.
Lol 😂 Louie like a squirrel 🐿 two run after 👍 thanks again for watching 👍😀🐾
My whippet didn't enjoy chasing a ball until she was 10. Very weird but now she's obsessed.
It’s all to do with how you train them it needs to be as early as possible
People also tend to be to soft with them too which doesn’t help
A long training lead is useful to help train recall
Hope that helps 👍
im looking into getting a whippet. contacted a few owners in the area. all that worries me is the winter. up here in norway it can get pretty chilly. but i suppose there are clothes for that :D. honestly i cannot wait to get my first dog

Elion1 👍😀🐾
Whippets are great dogs, I love mine a lot, but if it is your first dog, prepare yourself, you will need a lot of patience with a puppy. Whippets are very sensitive dogs with whom only positive training works. I suggest you to find a trainer to help you, it helps a lot. 😊

Lots of excellent info, thankyou. My whippet is a small three legged girl, 12 years old, I am having trouble finding coats to stay on straight and that are not cut to low to keep her one front leg unrestricted. Do you have some coat recommendations?
Hi there I would contact www.snaptogs.co.uk say I recommend you to them and ask if they can help you

Hi Mike what you will find with whippet they do settle down a lot at the age of 3 or 4
You just need to keep up the same repetitive Recall training and you will get there
Thanks for watching please check out our other videos of our adventures with Louie 👍😀🐾

Louie’s toy sounds like a turbo 😂😂
Where can I find this awesome toy!?
Thanks for watching there you go 👍

I wish Jasper was this good. We have tried everything from toys to his favourite treats, but once he’s outside he just does not care. It’s like he’s blind and deaf! Can you give me any advice?
Hi Lee have you tried a long training lead so he can’t run of and practice recall we treats before he’s had food to help him concentrate on the food too
Let me know how you get on 👍 best of luck
Dave, Jo and Louie 👍😀🐾🍺🍟
Gotta be fenced in. If a Whippet sees a deer, bye bye Whippet. You may or may not ever see him again.
Not all whippets we have a 3 year old too now and her recall is amazing 👍👍
