Watching you sharpen this buck 110 reminds me of my dads 110. When my parents were dating, they went away for a weekend. Of course my dad was playing with the knife and cut himself pretty bad. My mom took him to a vet as it was closer to them than a human doctor. A few months ago i found that same buck 110 and got it to a mirror polish on the old Precision Adjust. Gave it to my dad and within 5 minute he cut himself. Some people never learn lol.
Used lapping films with my old work sharp. Made a bunch of my own. Works well for getting a high polish finish on a knife. Buck sharpens their 110s to 17 degrees.
Agree , heavy pushing isn’t needed with diamonds . It makes the bevel even more than what it s set to I noticed around the tip and radius part from pushing hard . We all have our way of gettin gate same result 👍. Some folks just go ham all out and saw away
First timer here. Just bought this Pro guide system, never used a guided system before. Video is brilliant, was a bit nervous to use it as of the cost. All ready to go now though. I love your mat (with knife angles on), need to buy one. Thanks for posting. 👏👏👏
What do you use for the plates for the lapping film? Did you make them or purchase them. Just wondering. I've just been sticking the lapping film to my ceramic plate but it's a pain in the ass switching constantly.
Yes, when lapping, a burr can form, though it’s usually very fine and may be hard to detect by feel. Generally, you’d switch grits once you achieve a uniform surface without deep scratches from the previous grit, or when the blade feels consistently smooth across the edge. Watching for a polished, even surface is a good indicator to move to the next grit.
I just got my new Worksharp Professional precion adjust sharpener today. I just wish mine came with the work mat but it didn't. I can not wait to have some time to use my new sharpener.
Many thanks for all the great information! I've been watching your videos and I bought the lapping films. I've started to get the mirror finishes on my knives. On this one you started with the 30 micron. Any reason why you didn't start with the blue 40 micron?
I found your video to be very informative, I’m just a hobbyist but I’m always looking for perfection and I decided to get the lapping film and 99% alcohol but I’m planning on making my own backing plates for the film as I have some steel in my shop. Can you tell me if the thickness of the backing plates is critical for doing the job the steel I have is .02 “ thick it can be cut with shears if it’s not thick enough I can glue 2 or 3 together. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge
Question about direction of sharpening stone. I see that you cut with your stone in both directions. When I was taught to do basic knife sharpening in the Boy Scouts many years ago we were told to only cut in one direction, away from the edge for the sharpest edge results but in doing that your edge will be weaker than cutting in to to edge that gives a stronger edge but it will be less sharp. . The reason is the molecules of the steel are further apart when going away from edge . In using that idea I sometimes do an edge using away strokes for the front half of blade where maximum sharpness is wanted and into the edge for the back half where strength is needed for chopping. I’d be interested in getting your opinion on my methods .
Hi. Which stone do you attach your lapping films to. I think I saw one sharpening system that provides a "Blank" stone to attach lapping films. Does Workshop provide blanks?

@Sweetknives. 2 questions.. how long would a maxamet manix 2 take with included kit diamonds? Could I use 91% isopropyl? P.S. With KME and WE lapping films used away from edge only ??
Great video! If I was to make metal plates for the lapping films, what thickness metal stock should I use? Also, how to you adhere the film to the metal plate?
I own aSPPA and I can not get any knife stabilized in the clamp. The clamp itself is stable but the knife moves down with any small pressure which changes the angle. If I am doing something wrong then someone let me know please
I learned over 40 plus years ago on a whetstone. However iv been thinking about one of these..im probably going to make my own..how much does this sharpener cost? It looks way more quality than others
Just ordered the Precision adjust Elite. Thinking that I might get those lapping films. You recommend them over leather stropping? How do you attach them?
100% recommend them over the stropping although in some cases stropping works excellent too. The lapping films are more consistent, have higher grits, and really do make getting a mirror edge a lot easier as long as you complete the prior steps correctly before using the lapping films. They attach via sticky backside like a sticker.
So first of all awesome video definitely going to be purchasing this with your link… what are you using to stick the lapping film on? Is it just pieces of steel that you made?
Thanks, yea its just a piece of steel, they are plates and you can find extras here or make your own: www.etsy.com/listing/1479861163/worksharp-professional-precision-adjust?click_key=0c3e7a75a648d0651c3aa68e6bc9d712f6aded57%3A1479861163&click_sum=640d3dd9&ref=shop_home_feat_4&frs=1&bes=1&sts=1
Thanks for the videos. Very helpful..im pretty sure i purchased everything 😅 Long did the film last before you needed to replace with a new strip? Thanks
Just picked up this system, I absolutely love it! I want to pick up some plates and lapping film. Is it necessary to go from 30 micron down to 0.5? I’d greatly appreciate it if you could recommend around 3 different lapping films to use after the ceramic plate. Keep these great videos coming!
A real hair on the arm cut test is when you can find one hair on your arm and with the knife slightly slide it upwards if it cuts or whittles the hair then you have a sharp knife
Why would you start your lapping film at 30 micron or 600 grit when you already used stones at 600, 800, and ceramic? I would think the progression of lapping film would start at 12 micron or 1200 grit?
Because lapping film is not equal to diamond stones. This question comes up often. Think of 30 micron lapping as a good next logical step in the sequence after 800 grit. The ceramic doesn’t do too much in my opinion. It’s smoother in my opinion after 30 micron. The results speak for themselves, try it.
When you flip the knife over to sharpen the other side, you really should knock the burr to other side with a sweeping motion first like 3 swipes tip to heel because selling it back-and-forth you’re getting micro tear out

I bought the lapping film and it works perfectly on the backside of the plates. No need to purchase extra $25 dollar plates. 7 plates. 7 lapping films. Perfect sense. Clean off diamond debris before lapping and you're golden. Everything you need is in the box.
@@davidpossien3061are you saying that the included plates are enough and to just purchase the lapping films 7pk? I really want this entire system but purchasing the plates with the films are out ofmy budget for an upfront purchase.
the 1 micron i got is so aggressive that it lets me skip some of the previous ones lol. I originally had it for my fountain pens. It doesn't have an adhesive tho sadly so it's a pain to use (I hold it under the ceramic one... but wow... so shiny.... so sharp. I stayed up until 1:30am sharpening all my knives.. also I found out that the rotation mechanism sadly changes the angle by 1 degrees max which is sad/annoying as it can mess up your edge. usually it's closer to 0.5 degrees tho which is TBH the amount of play a skilled person using a regular stone would achieve. I ended up adjusting the angle every rotation, and i put the angle finder on the knife and not the surface! It makes a huge difference.
@Amybnuy That’s dedication! I totally get the late-night sharpening sessions-there’s something addictive about that mirror finish and razor edge. Great idea using the angle finder on the knife itself; those tiny adjustments really do make a difference. Thanks for sharing!
@@Sweetknives I should add that I just realized I forgot about the knife's natural angle so it doesn't give you the apex angle but it does give you a more consistent relative measurement :P
Is the thickness of the film and metal the same as the thickness of the Worksharp diamonds? If not how much does it change thee angle? I know, pretty hard to question a 43! Really enjoyed video.
So dumb question coming from someone that was never taught how to properly sharpen a knife. Say your knife is new and after a couple month from regular “normal” not abusive use and it’s just starting to get dull. What’s a good grit to start at? 220 as you did here?
Here’s some steps to take step#1 measure the length of your blade and find center and camp it to the center line of your clamp .step #2 set your angle at the center .step # take a angle reading at the end of you blade both at the handle and tip . On a 8 inch blade you may have a 3 degree deviation mark the spot with a sharpie . When you come to the spot adjust your angle to compensate for the deviation
