Always love seeing Richard Cooke on.
Quality guest for sure.
The vibe I get from this episode and in light of recent events is that the apocalypse is near and Chas will still be here delivering us quality political analysis when it happens
Yeah, like the ending of Terminator 2 with his thumbs up as the sea of misinformation swallows him up.
@@SkandiaAUS While it is quite self-indulgent for me to like you giving me a wrap, i simply had to love that cultural metaphor. It was just too perfect! XD - chas
This is a pretty grim time to be a follower of American politics, but watching PEP genuinely makes me feel a lot better about it - because I come out of it (and Planet America) at least feeling much more informed and better able to digest the week’s events from all angles.
Thanks cz. gazz! That makes ME feel better! - chas
I VOTE MORE PEP WITH RICH!
Also, I really appreciated the question Rich asked near the end regarding how the current state of affairs in the US has impacted Chas. Why? Because it is a question I have come up in the back of mind about once or twice every PEP where a topic of huge ethical/historical importance seems to be going in a "not so great" direction. The alternative to not hearing that Chas is saddened by the course of events is just feeling as though I am Leonardo DiCaprio's character in "Don't look up"...
Thank you Rich for such a great question. Thank you Chas for all of your analysis and for genuinely your thoughts.
Richard Cooke is one of the most engaging guests you've had on, I'd love for him to come on more often!
Agreed! Good energy and analysis
@@user-ff8ww8bq9q Cookie always good
That was a fascinating little section at the end there, thanks to Richard for asking the question. Usually the show is based on statistics, polling, history or responding to micro events so it was super interesting to get a macro, feelings-based analysis of where the US is heading and what that means for the rest of the democratic world.
PEP two-parter please!!
We have not listened for years to Chas explain Supreme Court cases in supreme detail to not get an episode dedicated to their most momentous decisions ... ever?
Oh, you'll get your detail, David! 2 hrs 48 from memory - coming tonight! - chas
@@pepwithchasanddrdave woooo!
Brilliant
Legend.
@@pepwithchasanddrdave WOOT!
Part 2 with Richard please (3 Pep's in a week is a gift I'd never think I'd get).
I counted 4 possible peps this week ( 2 x Richard, 1 x Dave, 1 "outstanding correspondence, "Chaz Unleashed", and Supreme Court Cases). I mean just in the rare event that Chaz doesn't get around to covering all the week's material... :p?
Chas I gotta say, the guest presenters you have on are always elite, Richard, Elle, Bill are always elite, another awesome episode. Richard's quote about this being the final season of Democracy is top notch.
And don’t forget the most elite of them all - Melina Wicks!!
@@sobriquet5016 yep
I’ve listened to every episode PEP, it’s my favourite podcast.
I was at work when I saw that SCOTUS has ruled for trump in the immunity hearing.
It hit me really hard, in my mind that was it for US Democracy, i understand your grief 😢 Chas, I’m feeling it too.
Hoping for some sort of miracle 🤞
This is somehow the best and simultaneously most depressing episode of PEP I've ever listened to as a loyal listener since pretty close to the start.
Great work tho, can't bloody wait to feel more dread listening to tomorrow's episode; 'tis the duality of PEP.
Looking forward to the three horsemen of the democracy apocalypse! The world can be a dark and depressing place, but we are very glad that you are sharing your window view with us. It is always worth looking at what is coming clear-eyed, and sharing a joke about it whatever may come. And for what it is worth, I am very grateful that you have built a community of well-informed and well-intentioned people to share the journey with. ❤
PEP comments are the only ones I allow myself to read these days - everywhere else is just too toxic
Chas what you said about the sadness you feel for the idea of America dying really resonated with me. I had been struggling to put into words why I felt such a deep sadness myself about the current state of american politics until hearing this. I hope that we somehow manage to walk the narrow path forward to something better rather than into a terminal decline. Thank you for all the work you put into PEP, I have enjoyed listening since I discovered it at ep 133. All the best.
I’m putting an early vote in for a 2 parter on Friday. Looking forward to a weekend PEP lock-in.
I also really liked the closing section. I’d love for you all to spend an episode in the offseason to talk more about your history with the US, what drew you all in, and what you find most interesting about it now.
I am grateful for 'The Festival of Perverse Incentives', sponsored by Slaanesh
Gotta love She Who Thirsts
It was both touching and despairing to hear you personally reflect on the emotional toll the unravelling of US democracy is having on you, Chas. Fingers crossed!!!
I am at the age where I have seen a number of elderly relatives pass the point of competence on the way down. Most of the time they don't recognise that in themselves. They feel discriminated against and maligned if you tell them to stop doing tasks at which they are no longer competent. I don't blame Biden for not realising he needs to step aside. I don't even really blame Jill Biden for not wanting to see his decline. Well, OK, I do - but I recognise that it is hard. But bloody hell SOMEONE needs to step up and take away the car keys and I don't know who, other than her, that could be.
Brilliant show. Listened to it all from over in London
I keep thinking it's Friday night and feeling ready for the weekend as I listen to this. 😂
Thanks guys. More, always more. You don’t need to be asking us.
Really appreciate how much you, Dr Dave and your guests give to us Peppers.
I loved the surprise of seeing Richard on a Murdoch documentary!
Perhaps there could be a Richard PEP special focusing on the life of Rupert Murdoch and the story of his empire.
You could even bank the episode and release it when a major Rupert Murdoch event happens.
Yes. x100
This needs to happen.
I'm all for more PEP with Richard!
agreed
Hey Chaz!
I've been following planet America and PEP for over 10 years now.
Your passion and drive and how it feeds this project has been Soo valuable to me.
It's very often the highlight of my week.
It was heart breaking to hear how the depredation of event in the states effects you.
Know that you are respected and that you've done great things!!! 👍👍👍👍
Part 2! Part 2! Part 2!
@Richard Cooke THE PEPPERS DEMAND !!!! WOOT WOOT!!
Richard is a fantastic guest and easy on the ears too. Definitely vote for more! Notwithstanding Richard's mini 'Misery' moment... 'I have to go now...' 😂
I adore Richard's voice too!
This is the first PEP episode I couldn't get through in one go, I think it's PTSD. Hearing Biden talk; and I'm back in that empty, dark CNN studio, the horror all too real 😮
Never presume, but more PEP. Great honest discussion 👏
Hi guys, given the events of the debate I thought your weighting of factors and discussion of consequence very enjoyable. In particular Richards question to you Chaz regarding your personal thoughts and feelings was fantastic, a window to greater understanding, thank you both.
@2:27:50 - I'll say it again Chas you have the best neutral perspective of of anyone I listen to about US politics - and I live here - start writing op-eds for magazines then get a contributor job on a major weekend show where you can do pretaped interviews or whatever fits your schedule - your voice is needed here
Politico would have already offered (probably some others too).
Unfortunately, I take a little longer to come up with my views than most publications would like, dodge - cause I do so much reading first. So I may not be ideal for publications who demand instant reactions. But who knows what the future holds. Thanks for the kind words though! - chas
I vote in favor of part 2
❤bonus pep! ❤
#41 posting every podcast until we get Planet Britain OR until Chas gets a good night sleep!
Every thing is fine now in UK.... :)
oh, that's right, farage...
Also I tuned in today to hear the Supreme Court explanation, I loved the election analysis but I definitely would be grateful for part 2.
Excellently candid there at the end thanks lads
Please do part two! Thank you, Chas and Richard 🙏
Awesome Chaz. Vote 1 for Part 2!
What a gift it was to see a new PEP this morning. Especially after I realised I left my watch at a friends last night and would need to drive over 2 hours to get it back today. Seriously though, thank you so much. Not just for saving my sanity on the long tour of Melbourne's outer suburbs but also for validating my feelings of being gaslit by everyone saying Biden just had a bad night, he was jetlagged, had a cold etc.
I kept wanting to scream at everyone that they were side stepping the issue. Sure its a risk to swap in Harris now, but as you alluded to, do we expect Biden to get better in the coming months? As the campaign really kicks into gear do we expect him to suddenly turn back the clock 5 years and make the debate a distant memory? Or will he keep faltering and possibly lower the bar further? I think it's all on the table at this point. As you said, people were giving him the benefit of the doubt for a long time and that's gone now. Getting over that doubt again is going to be near impossible in my view probably what could make the difference in a close election.
P.S. For anyone interested in the Supreme Court, the "5-4" podcast is a great place to get into the weeds of important cases past and present. It's hosted by ex-lawyers and like PEP isn't afraid to take things a little less seriously to make the topics more engaging.
Shout out to Chas’ family who must be the most tolerant people in the world to lose him to this podcast when he’s supposed to be on holiday. 😂
Also… Do you really need to ask? Yes to full fact check!
Wow. Those side by side clips from 2019 vs 2024 were so different.
I’d been hanging for this episode after a weekend with no PEP and can’t remember being as excited for something as I am for part 2 and a trio Friday ep. Chas coming in hard with some Christmas in July energy bringing a bounty like this. Thanks for everything you do for the fans of this show.
This PEP brings the truth bombs, lined with depleted uranium of facts. Perfect PEPping, to be honest -- that's what it's for.
Yes part 2 please
2:35:38 WE WANT PART 2/TRIPOD/SUPREME COURT BONUS 2:40:10
Part two please.
Another great pod, part 2 please!! Chas Unleashed should always be part 2 so can have more than 3 hours of PEP each week / episode
Thank you Richard for finally upholding the principles of true democracy.
I for one vote for no more PEP. I think that's enough and it's time to pack it in.
Good to get that off my chest. Now I get to have more of my spare time back to listen to Andrew Tate.
Oh wait, no more vote?.... Oh well, I guess it's true that democracy is dying
Followed Planet America for years Chaz but only just found you here - youve earnt a subscriber, this is brilliant, i love the analysis and i have to say, your knowledge and having guests that offer the same is actually a motivation to switch to this as my main Aussie source as i just find John Barron insufferably partisan for the Democrats/DNC, not to mention the dodgy "think tank" he works for. Can you swap him for Rich?
Seriously great work by you, and over a long period too, its really appreciated - this has such an influence on our own country and its geo/politics/economic course and im sure thats a big reason why you have a strong following of engaged Ausie viewers who want and need something more than the crap dished up on the main tv channels.
Bravo!
That was an amazing episode! I always want more PEP. But after all the sombre news I think you need a holiday!!
Great episode with a lot of great insights. I usually don’t post comments on UA-cam videos but thank you both for an enjoyable and informative listen!
Yas Bonus PEP!
Richard Cooke ❤❤ make him permanent
OH MY GOD I have to mention: I was listening to the two Bidens via podcast in bed, and I literally spent 30 SECONDS wondering who was speaking after Biden. I forgot it was Biden.
Damnnnnnnn. Damning.
I don't usually get PEP on UA-cam, but just here to comment: PART 2 PLEASE
Finally, PEP posted at a reasonable time!
Definitely do part two, and thanks 😅
Yay Chas unleashed bonus!!!! So awesome! And thanks for the heartfelt analysis on the demise of American politics - appreciated the pathos and genuineness. It shows that no system can endure without good will - even with the matchless goals of the US constitution.
Definitely want to hear more and 100% some Supreme Court stuff
Always give us a part 2
Bring on part 2
2-parter please❤
Chas- Is it was a good decision for the Supreme Court to take on the immunity challenge to make clearer the distinction between presidential duties /what’s not. Thus avoiding this again in the future? Maybe I’ve got this wrong??
Hey Steph, I'm obviously about to rant a lot more about this in the next PEP. But i think clarifying the immunity issue was a good idea. I happen to also think a president SHOULD enjoy some immunity when doing their jobs. But my concern with the Supreme Court ruling was that a) the rules the Court imposed were shockers; and b) Their ruling was super vague anyway, so it really didn't clear very much up.
But you may disagree with my take - and I might be the one who's wrong. So have a listen to PEP 167 and see what you think! - chas
Yes to Supreme Court cases summaries as well!
Make a Part 2 please. Also, wear matching jumpers again
More PEP ! Let’s go!!!!! And thanks to Ritchie for his suggestion and willingness ❤
Yes to more
I live with a Neurologist who specialises in movement disorders. He's been saying for a while now that Joe Biden has Parkinson's Disease
My grandmother died of Parkinson’s/Lewy Body dementia. There are some similarities, but I think it’s just general old age and his pre-existing stutter.
@@--enyo-- I would be so pleased to be wrong!
MORE!
Chas I just wanted to add my 2c about Lichtman’s claim that “debates don’t decide elections”. I second both yours and Richard’s scepticism about the relevance of his keys in this particular election. I think what he misses in this claim about debates not mattering is that in this instance, it’s not about the debate. The debate was simply the container that showcased Biden’s impairment. It could easily have been the state of the union or some other widely televised media appearance. In the same way that Republican bias to constantly view Biden as frail and infirm led to widespread shock when he did a great job at the state of the union, Democrats’ optimistic bias led them to mirroring this shock when we saw the opposite on the debate stage. The conversation is only minimally about the content of the debate; it’s more widely about the physical and cognitive demise of Biden as a human. There’s no key in Lichtman’s theory to account for this. Perhaps, as geriatrics persist in not retiring from key leadership positions in the USA, he should add one for perceived physical and mental health.
Side note: I strongly feel there should also be a key for communication skills and willingness to appear in public. Seems that a candidate could tick every box and still flounder if they are a stellar performer on paper, like Biden. If nobody knows what you’ve achieved, and you do all your “presidenting” behind closed doors, it could wipe out the relevance of every other key you’ve won. I suppose this could come under the “charisma” key but if so, it seems to me that this key should have more weighting than all the others. ❤ Gem
I completely agree about communication skills being essential in modern presidents, and Lichtman paying it too short shrift. Honestly, I just don't rate his system at all. I think he's been riding off literally only 1 or 2 good calls (the rest of the elections were obvious calls) for wayy tooo long! - chas
We saw how old Obama looked after his first term. It’s a job that takes years off your life. No doubt about that. Biden has been run down by his time as president. There can be no doubt.
CHAS LEASHED!!
You guys did a great job with this discussion. Thanks!
Finally been waiting for this! Even though it’s 2.30am :) and watching it at work :)
Interesting thoughts about the Dems having the 'only 2 Candidates in the country who can't beat Trump'. Do you remember the Democratic Primary 4 years ago? Pepperidge Farm remembers.
None of them were inspiring.
Who amongst them do you think could beat Donald if they were the VP?
Ps. I know the decline of US dominance was inevitable. But I never thought it could be happening right now. And not like this. You guys legit gave me chills thinking about it. Amazing podcast Chas
Fact check the debate please Chas !
A rough note to end on but another great podcast with a great guest. I hope, for our own sake that the US's future isn't as precarious as you describe. Looking forward to Friday.
It really is time for grandpa to hand over the keys.
Can’t wait for the Supreme Court special!
More please ❤
Part two please!
Hello. Nothing useful in this comment. Just appreciate all the hard work and good info. Thanks Chas!
Part 2 Supreme Court Boogaloo please!
Does anyone else feel that a Harris/Whitmer ticket might be the way forward?
I really like Buttigieg, sharp witted, Harris/Butt? ... I'm also a big fan of AOC, but I love the Sanders crowd - extreme left (but what I consider sensible centre: Sanders had great policies).
Not a Neurologist or Geriatrician and going to follow the Goldwater rule strictly here, but also pointing out that the official letter regarding Biden’s health is in the public domain. It has been acknowledged that he uses a CPAP machine to treat Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) and he is also under treatment for Atrial Fibrillation (AF). His somewhat stiff gait is attributed to osteoarthritis, including degenerative change to parts of the spinal column. Even in the absence of movement disorders such as Parkinson Disease all of the above can present relatively significant burden of disease depending on underlying physical condition. No information regarding cognitive testing appears in the official transcript at this stage. Cognitive and capacity assessment can take several consultations - sometimes people have quite astonishing levels of ability to keep up superficially normal conversation even while their underlying cognitive function is impaired. Sorry to say that the festival of perverse incentives [thanks Richard for that superb line!] may apply in the case of physicians to the President, too :(
Absolutely captivating ep but also grim as fuck
I love the way Richard sat uncomfortably as you described the many Court cases he would get to discuss, and the glimmer of hope that he might escape it if we all vote No.
Calling it Tri-Pod week anyway.
Chas, can you give us a primer on the supreme court plz!
MOAR!
edit: bit sad we dont get Richard on SCOTUS bollocks tho.
People sometimes ask me why I care about American Politics and my answer was so similar to Chas, when he was discussing his feelings about the current situation. That really resonated with me, it is depressing and the otherside of this chapter can't come fast enough.
Great episode
Part 2 please!
I am just one person. But, I for one expressly vote YES please both come back, the two of you
Others may not feel the same way. And, it really is as if this was the perfect PEP just now, whole and complete in itself. And yet, there is for me a very great longing to see the flipside.
As everyone will know, I am perhaps a little bit over interested in the Immunity case. But that is all the more reason to see a systematic view of all the cases that ran out the 2023 term.
I have to admit that I have not done "the reading" on the topic in which I am most interested. But there are one or two lines of historical thought I do want to suggest provide a worthy light coming in from the side. And provide a living thread . .
Another pod please!
37:37 imagine that’s true. That’s a pretty bad sign for the American health.
And yet more reasons to vote RFK
Sounds great a tripod. Can't wait Maybe get tripod to supply a theme song
Please make it a 3 pod week🎉
While I do think it's depressing to see the final acts of that idea that is America in real time, watching it go so PEPpy here makes it less hurtful, a tickle maybe?
Hey Chas.
I hear an alternate interpretation for the "we beat medicare" line... not a better interpretation for Biden. I'll put my 'inner voice' interpretation in square brackets...
"We’d be able to right wipe out his debt. We’d be able to help make sure that all those things we need to do - child care, elder care, making sure that we continue to strengthen our health care system, making sure [...what's that program we fund to do with health care?...] that we’re able to make every single solitary person [...umm, what is it called...?...] eligible for what I’ve been able to do with [.... c'mon, man, whats the program called?!...] the Covid. [Really, brain, COVID??] Excuse me, [oh, man, I stuffed this up, I said covid when I was trying to name that health care program...quick deploy some fill words while it comes to me...] with dealing with everything we have to do with [just give up, reset. Your time is almost out] - look, if - [bugger, seconds left, finish strong, you said covid, so you might as well lean in and double down, this health care program wont come to me...] we finally beat [Covid...] Medicare [oh, great, there you are! Thanks for coming to me... to late now!]
I feel he was searching for Medicare before he rambled, stumbled over Covid, then had covid on his brain when he tried to finish strong.
Much better than the excuse in The Hill that he was trying to attack "big pharma".
bwahaha, I reckon that is very close to what happened.
Hahaha, I'm not going to read this out, Peter, cause it needs to be read. But I actually think you might be right! This is a brilliant translation of an addled mind. You should work in aged care! - chas
