    Ted, I could tell you were HVAC when I saw the wad of money you took out of your shirt pocket. I'm a poor-ass electrician, and when guys call me about a job, I tell them to get into HVAC. That is where the big bucks are! A Franklin in a shirt pocket? Not me! That thing is in my wallet with the pocket button fastened! Enjoy your videos. Thanks!

    That flame sensor is just a piece of stainless steel. I just use plain ole sandpaper and have never had a problem. I guess we all have our way of doing things and the only right way is the way that works.
    The door switches used to be a safety switch because older units used to be more accessible to the residents of the home. They would have to take the cover off to change the filter and if they would just leave the door off, it would suck carbon monoxide into the blower and then into the house. These are 40 plus-year-old systems though and the door switch should have been repurposed years ago. For the love of God, why are they still using a mechanical switch with there are so many more modern options?
    Thx. for the info, vids, and entertainment.
    God bless bro.

    That is a big job just as I imagined it would be! I never got the chance to change a heat exchanger when I was working because my boss would not allow us to do that! He said because of the liability and something possibly happening to the people living in the house we had to always replace the entire furnace! His exact words were when I questioned him about this were " carbon monoxide. is nothing to play with people die from that always replace the furnace just to be on the safe side" there were a few times that heat exchangers went bad under warranty starting with a smell in the house and then failing the smoke bomb test the owner argued with the manufacturer about just replacing the heat exchanger and everytime they would supply us with a replacement furnace! But the company had to eat the labor costs! I can still remember the boss saying all I want to see is a-- holes and elbows we are not making any money off of this ! You did what most HVAC technicians would do and i am not doubting what you did you cured the problem Ted!

    It's awesome to see how others work throughout the US. Here in Southern California, our gas utility would have turned off the gas to the home if they saw the copper gas connector. I didn't think copper was every allowed for natural gas. Perhaps that connector is not copper, or maybe its a propane system?

    Copper gas lines are against most city and state codes , even the railroad commission which regulates propane which is much more dangerous than natural gas. Most licensed contractors and even lowly technicians are well aware of the liabilities of servicing a unit and Not replacing a copper line with coated flex line and a proper “drip leg” with hard pipe connection from the gas valve through to the outside of the unit as safely precaution against vibration breaking the coated flex....I believe its a national plumbing and mechanical code

    • @edwardjanowiak

      cassidy strickland both the uniform code and the international code have sections that reference the use of copper for gas piping. 403.10 is the section to look up in icc codes, it addresses the use of copper.

    Blower door safety switch are needed for lazy HVAC contractors who do not provide a filter rack on outside of furnace and make the homeowners have to remove the blower door and install filters from inside the furnace lol. And we all know what happens most of the time when this happens the filters are never changed by most homeowners or they just do not know where the filter is located lol.

    Ted - I've been following you for almost 2 years and really enjoy your content. I'm a DIYer on a lot of things but know my limits. I have 2 90+% efficient trane gas furnaces, 1 in the attic and 1 in the crawlspace. Same product line, just different sizes. On the one in the crawlspace I recently noticed that I have a rusty spot which has begun to seep a small amount of condensate water from the furnace condensor...this is near the water outlet on the furnace condensor, below the inducer. Based on the videos I have seen online, I believe a replacement of the heat exchanger would replace the area where the rusty/leaky spot it. But, it's a 2005 model furnace, so it's 17 years old. At that age, does it make any sense at all to replace just the heat exchanger, or should I replace the whole furnace? I've no complaints about how either the furnace or the AC work...I just need to know what makes the most sense to replace.

      It’s hard to explain the smell unless you have smelled it before it doesn’t smell like sulfur or like natural gas, and actually what your smelling isn’t necessarily CO but you will be smelling combustion products so whatever is in natural gas once you burn it you will be smelling that, if hard to describe but it smells Smokey I guess if I had to put put a smell to it, a sign that your heat exchanger is going bad though or leaking you’ll see some black stuff or sooty deposits coming from the air outlets around your house.
      Best thing would be to have Carbon
      Monoxide detectors near the vent outlets just in case.

    The door switch does have a purpose but I don't know why any homeowner with any sense would be poking around in there. Besides that, it's so easy to bypass, it might as well not be there. On natural draft furnaces I can understand it because you'd be pulling in CO out of the hood but those are nearly extinct dinosaurs by now.

    • @n.gineer8102
      @n.gineer8102 5 років тому +1

      The problem is most homeowners have no idea and that switch helps minimize the accident. I don’t mind techs bypassing it during service but I’d prefer they let it do its thing once they are gone. Bypassing anything that might be a safety device is no longer acceptable practice in the gas business.

Plus when trane manufacture that unit it did come with a crack in heat exchanger so I guess you just leave people with cracks in heat exchanger till its an actual problem or someone is dead.
