This guy is awesome, I ended up making sure my ignitor worked, then checking my gas valve and finding it wasn't opening. I ended up hitting my gas valve three times with a rubber handled screwdriver (like he did) and the gas valve opened up. I need to replace it, but my gas is working, and I have a happy wife! Thank you for being so open and sharing your trouble shooting Anti DIY HVAC!
Complete HVAC newb here. Mom's furnace stopped blowing hot air; she's of age and poor thing can't handle anything below 65 in the house. So be that as it may, I learn a thing or two about HVAC on the YOUBE and voila the surface ignitor not doing its job cuz it burnt out. replaced it. Ran through many cycles, ignitor lights up, but no burners. Kept trying, nothing. Saw more vids, all pointing to bad gas valve; I'm visiting so I haven't a lick o tools other than mom's lil cute walmart china tool set. Was going to run out to Hobo freight to grab a multimeter when I come across your vid. Thank you, slapped it a few times and it woke up spitting out the gas, burners activated, heats a blowing, house is cozy, moms a happy. Bless you brother. thanks.
Your absolutely right. That gas valve would run forever in your house. It will quit in the middle of the night or on a holiday in a customers house. Good vid.
Furnace Repairman said new Gas Valve 500$, or new furnace for 3000 $$., I hit the valve w/ end of my screw driver 10-13 times, My Furnace fired up PERFECT!!! THQ THQ so very much!!! Its Working!! Yippee💗💖💗💖💗💖💗💟💛
DUDE YOU ARE AWESOME!!!! You just saved me and my wife from freezing!! Love this video! I had already done the volt test prior to watching this video and I’m 200% sure that my gas valve is shot! We do have someone coming out in a few days but now we don’t have to freeze while we are waiting! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Thank you for posting this video. Is 48deg here in Houston and that is unbearably cold for us. After doing the usual clearance of the pressure switch tube, I trouble shot the problem your way, swapped the gas valve and we are back in Buisness. #subscribed
We always try and have new flame sensors on the truck , they are cheap and easy to replace . I have used the tapping method on the gas valve lots of times to get the heat back on while I go get a new one .
Good diagnosis and video. Yes, totally agree with you on reliability of the old one after you tapped it. It would be hit or miss. If it was mine, I would probably leave it in too just like you said. I have seen the toggle switches also get some dirt or something in them on those WR valves too. Toggling them seems to get them back online...but for how long.
I once knew a guy who had an old Chevy pickup truck that wouldn't start. I looked at it for him and tried the old trick of hitting the solenoid with a hammer, just to get him going, and it worked. I told him he needed to replace the starter, or at least the solenoid. I met him about a year later and he was still starting that old truck by smacking the starter with that same hammer. The starter was beat to crap, but somehow it still worked. He was proud of the fact that he hadn't had to buy a new starter. Go figure.
I am so very glad to see how you present your information so that no 'diy'er' can just hop in and do the work. A person has to have some technical experience!
It's not the "friction" of the flame that "creates the millivolts". It's called flame rectification. The IFC puts a 150-ish volt AC signal on the sensor rod. The flame is plasma - somewhat like an ionized gas. Due to the geometry, the flame conducts better in one direction than the other, and so the 150 volt signal is rectified into (very small) a DC current which is sensed by the IFC flowing back to ground (the burner). The current is only 2 to 5 microamps. When the flame is not present, the DC current is not present.
Electricians hammer? Lol! Good job especially with getting the valve going and especially cleaning the sensor and yes, a $20 does clean it 20x better as does a $50 =50x and so on! Enjoyed the video! B.l.t.n64!
The flame sensor acts like a diode and rectifies the AC signal when a flame is present. The microcontroller on the control board detects a DC voltage when the flame is present.
Same here. I watched a few other videos but I guess they were too proud to show the old-timers last ditch trick. Knowing what the problem is now I'll see how long she holds. 👍🔨
Thanks for your help. I'm waiting for the gas valve to come through the shipping. Does it matter which way to plugs in the wires I forgot which wire goes where?
Do you carry universal gas values on your Van? If so what one's? Have Recently been stocking a service van from being promoted from doing Preventative maintenance. Thank you for all the knowledge and wisdom
We have to take a reading of before and after the cleanig of the flame sensor. I will here from the boss if I don't, he wants to see everthing we do on a service call documented. EVERYTHING.
What about a furnace gas leak in the cellar? Propane gas detector is mounted near floor and near furnace. Opposite a couple yards away there is an electric 200v dryer. The under carriage of dryer has red hot nichrome wire coil open heating element, when dryer is ON. This must be a common issue?
I’ve watched some of your videos, and Thanks, but I notice you don’t video a lot of change out of devices, just what’s wrong, and video of the finished product, after your fix…!?!?
I have a case where the 28vdc is present only if I unplug it (for about 5 seconds) which is the trial run. I plug it back and probe the wires and I get a very rapid spike and goes back to where it was 0.5vdc. Is this an indication of a bad valve or board? Also, valve unplugged it always reads 15v and as soon as I plug it I read about 0.5vdc. Thank you for your help.
Hi, I have installed one of these trane replacement gas valves and i never saw this type of gas valve with no 1/4 fittings to check the pressure and there was no pressure testing tap on the manifold pipe either any thoughts ?
I've installed a lot of Tranes, Good units. But of all the furnaces and boilers I've installed, Trane was the only one that had a bad gas valve at first initial startup. It was back when they first came out with the 2 stage. Ive banged on em and they fire, percussive adjustment
Agreed. Seen a lot of Tranes with a bad valve, especially 2 stage ones. Like I commented earlier, Ive seen em bad on new installs, went to fire it and denied.
What about checking the back of the circuit board on that pile of crap. Bet it was brown as bigs as a quarter as you surely went back to that house because you didn’t know the reason for the intermittent operation
YOU ARE THE BADDEST HVAC MAN I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE YOU ARE THAT GOOD IF YOU RUN FOR PRESIDENT I'M VOTING FOR YOU YOU BROKE IT DOWN LIKE A SCIENTIST PERFORMING SCIENCE YOU MADE IT SO SIMPLE AND YOU PERFORMED AND VISUALIZE WHAT EVERYONE SAID NOT TO DO YOU DID IT AND IT WORKED I SAW IT WITH MY OWN TWO EYES YOU'RE THE MAN I LOVE IT YOU'RE THE FIRST HVAC CONTRACTOR I HAVE EVER SEEN CLEAN A FLAME SENSOR WITH MONEY YOU ARE THE BEST MAN STRAIGHT LIKE THAT I'VE BEEN DOING HEATING AND AIR FOR 25 YEARS I HAVE MY OWN COMPANY AND EVERYTHING YOU ARE THAT GOOD I AM SO PROUD TO HAVE WATCHED THIS VIDEO YOU ARE THAT GOOD EVERYONE SCREAMING ALL THIS B******* ABOUT DON'T BANG ON THE GAS VALVE IS DANGEROUS AND WILL BLOW UP WHAT YOU DID WAS EXTREMELY HELPFUL AND USEFUL AND IT ACTUALLY WORKED THANK YOU SIR GOD BLESS YOU AND ENJOY YOUR SUCCESS 🎶💯✌🏽
I'm having the same issue. HSI lights, but shuts off soon as the gas valve energizes. I smell gas but no flame. I even hear the sound of gas flow but no flame.
Those valves are crap from what I've read and I'm about to change mine which is the exact one on this video. I tapped it and turned the switch off and on and it fired up after a few tries.
I call a HVAC guy to replace my furnace blower motor start ran like it was smoothly and the guy came upstairs said the gas pressure valve is to high reading 4.6 normal 3.5 they try to adjust the valve but couldn't adjust the pressure of the gas they told me that need to shot off the gas because unsafe to operate the HVAC guy said need to replace the entire furnace they give me amount estimation $ 8k to 10k the guy told me they put a redtagged means dangerous or unsafe to operate can cause fire or explosion . The furnace is 26 year old anyone can give me advice.
No friction works on2to 4 dc microamps flame rectification flame rod is much smaller than the burner GROUND. Area more current flows inone direction than the other that's a redundant gas valve if it was a whiterodgers u will be back the voltage to the rod is 80 volts AC
Sir this video just saved me this ❄️ winter. Saved me $$$ and a headache. Thank you for making this. “Fixed it”

Every tool has a hammer side. nice fix
I made a temporary fix on my own heater with a few taps as well. We'll see how she holds. Thanks for the tip.

Great video. I love the $20 trick. The ppl that don't like it are the ppl that have no heat at 3 a.m. in the middle of January.

"but, if this was *my* house ... you know the body man drives around in a primered car and the mechanic drives a piece of junk" ... true
The second you banged on the gas valve and it worked, I knew you'd clean the flame sensor with a bill haha
I Like the Mans Honesty...

I just did you fonnzy bang for giggles method 5minutes ago and mines popped right on. Have a Gemini 202 type in hand to change. Thanks for your help
The minute I saw that flame sensor I knew what was coming.
This guy just saved me so much money. I’m trying to figure out the part number on the gas regulator
Just for giggles lol nice man! With the customer right there halrious keep em comin sir
The TAP trick helped me. Thanks.

I’ve been using the good ol rubber handled nut driver ignition system for years😆 Watching your videos when I was coming up in t
In the trades would definitely have saved me some heart break😁 These young guys will have it easy....which is a great thing.
Good troubleshooting! Great outcome!
I am so very glad to see how you present your information so that no 'diy'er' can just hop in and do the work. A person has to have some technical experience!
Lots of tech skills here but not hvac. I need my gas valve replaced...by me of course.
It's not the "friction" of the flame that "creates the millivolts". It's called flame rectification. The IFC puts a 150-ish volt AC signal on the sensor rod. Rectify through the flame, micro amps.
wow, that is HOW it done by Banging and Banging to fix it. That is Old Fashion way,man....Yeeehaaa
Ive used the dollar trick and also used a corner to a gently used green scrubbie both work well. Nice video Ted!
Great video. I had the same problem and narrowed it down to the valve being the problem. I banged on it like in the video and it fired up :)
Same here. I watched a few other videos but I guess they were too proud to show the old-timers last ditch trick. Knowing what the problem is now I'll see how long she holds. 👍🔨
@@cashields4660 how's it holding? I tapped mine a fee days ago and it's working still but i ordered a new valve just in case.
Thanks for your help. I'm waiting for the gas valve to come through the shipping. Does it matter which way to plugs in the wires I forgot which wire goes where?
use scotch bright much less abrasive and quicker
save your money
how would it save him money? doesn't get much cheaper then free.
Ted you did not mention how much you charge for this service call? Love your video great information
Do you carry universal gas values on your Van? If so what one's? Have Recently been stocking a service van from being promoted from doing Preventative maintenance. Thank you for all the knowledge and wisdom
No valve replacement. You don't need vid for that I guess. The tapping and cleaning are great. Thank you.
The troubleshooting is what's important.
You deliberately edited out the replacing of the gas valve because you don't want diy-ers trying it, right?
Do you check gas pressure after replacing a gas valve?
Flame sensor does not generate any current. The power comes from the control board and Is passed through the rod and through the flame to ground.
Thank you for clearing that up Joe.
It seems to be a thermistor. It's resistance will change with a change in temperature.
lol
Ac voltage sent to rod from board. DC Microamps ( μA) is what we measure. Below ~1.7 usually will cause issues.
We have to take a reading of before and after the cleanig of the flame sensor. I will here from the boss if I don't, he wants to see everthing we do on a service call documented. EVERYTHING.
yes
Sounds like your boss is a bird.
Great video.. helps so much for a new tech like me
Love your videos!! Very informative!!👍😎
Good job Ted. Thank you for the videos
Your a funny man and Honest, loved the video, but honest people better.

I’ve been doing the dollar trick for a long time....it’s old school
I really like your video and I enjoy it but honestly, you disrespect the 20 dollars bill of your country.
Gotta let that hot mama cool down. Great work as always
I hear that hitting does wonders for the HSI.
Should you adjust the GV when the gas meter is only supplying the minimum required by the unit?
Where do you check the pressure on this new gas valves i see the small hex head screws on inlet and supply ?
Nice video. It would have been nice to show us setting manifold pressure and TR. And any further adjustment needed.
Nice video once again thank you
I’ve watched some of your videos, and Thanks, but I notice you don’t video a lot of change out of devices, just what’s wrong, and video of the finished product, after your fix…!?!?
I do the same thing with the flame sensor except i use a single lol
I have a case where the 28vdc is present only if I unplug it (for about 5 seconds) which is the trial run. I plug it back and probe the wires and I get a very rapid spike and goes back to where it was 0.5vdc. Is this an indication of a bad valve or board? We have fixed gas valves in poultry houses.
I use a stainless steel brush from the welding supply company to clean flame sensors
Hi, I have installed one of these trane replacement gas valves and i never saw this type of gas valve with no 1/4 fittings to check the pressure and there was no pressure testing tap on the manifold pipe either any thoughts ?
Darn it i am hooked on your vids.
Good !! I need the support !! Thank You for watching !!

I feel sorry for that poor ole flame sensor it definitely was abused lol
I have had to change so many of those Trane gas valves, they need to look into re-inventing them . Lol
Trane outsources the valves just like most any brand does. However I agree... they are all cheap, and sure do fail a lot.
Agreed. Seen a lot of Tranes with a bad valve, especially 2 stage ones. Like I commented earlier, Ive seen em bad on new installs, went to fire it and denied.
If you're hvac guy wants to put your furnace in the attic? FIND SOMEONE ELSE...🤣
Would a 50 dollar bill work better ? Lol 😂
Best video ever
What about checking the back of the circuit board on that pile of crap. Bet it was brown as bigs as a quarter as you surely went back to that house because you didn’t know the reason for the intermittent operation
Never heard of this method for a flame sensor cleaning, Will $100 bill work just as well?
Probably even better !!
At 6:40, will a $1 bill work or do I have to use a $20 bill? I am a poor man.... 😉😉
When in doubt BFH!!!
200 steel wool works good too
YOU ARE THE BADDEST HVAC MAN I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE YOU ARE THAT GOOD IF YOU RUN FOR PRESIDENT I'M VOTING FOR YOU YOU BROKE IT DOWN LIKE A SCIENTIST PERFORMING SCIENCE YOU MADE IT SO SIMPLE AND YOU PERFORMED AND VISUALIZE WHAT EVERYONE SAID NOT TO DO YOU DID IT AND IT WORKED I SAW IT WITH MY OWN TWO EYES YOU'RE THE MAN I LOVE IT YOU'RE THE FIRST HVAC CONTRACTOR I HAVE EVER SEEN CLEAN A FLAME SENSOR WITH MONEY YOU ARE THE BEST MAN STRAIGHT LIKE THAT I'VE BEEN DOING HEATING AND AIR FOR 25 YEARS I HAVE MY OWN COMPANY AND EVERYTHING YOU ARE THAT GOOD I AM SO PROUD TO HAVE WATCHED THIS VIDEO YOU ARE THAT GOOD EVERYONE SCREAMING ALL THIS B******* ABOUT DON'T BANG ON THE GAS VALVE IS DANGEROUS AND WILL BLOW UP WHAT YOU DID WAS EXTREMELY HELPFUL AND USEFUL AND IT ACTUALLY WORKED THANK YOU SIR GOD BLESS YOU AND ENJOY YOUR SUCCESS 🎶💯✌🏽

Thank -20 2 day out of heat fixed so cold thank old guy warm now
I'm having the same issue. HSI lights, but shuts off soon as the gas valve energizes. I smell gas but no flame. I even hear the sound of gas flow but no flame.
Me too, my ignighter lights, but no flame started. Fan is blowing as well. Did you have to change the gas regulator valve?
Did he really need a new valve.... or just clean the flame sensor??
Those valves are crap from what I've read and I'm about to change mine which is the exact one on this video. I tapped it and turned the switch off and on and it fired up after a few tries.
getting ready to change my valve would have more helpful to show how to do it
Mike Nobbe the name of his channel is anti-diy..
Hi, HAHAHA ! Old School Tricks Still Work !
Very good video !
Great video
Does a $20 bill make it 20x cleaner than a $1 bill ??
I call a HVAC guy to replace my furnace blower motor start ran like it was smoothly and the guy came upstairs said the gas pressure valve is to high reading 4.6 normal 3.5 they try to adjust the valve but couldn't adjust the pressure of the gas they told me that need to shot off the gas because unsafe to operate the HVAC guy said need to replace the entire furnace they give me amount estimation $ 8k to 10k the guy told me they put a redtagged means dangerous or unsafe to operate can cause fire or explosion . hvac guy was a scammer. i hope u didnt replace the entire thing.
It's old, you did replace it right?
Works for me👍🏿
You could charge the customer $20.00 for cleaning out the ingnitor!
la lija mas cara de la historia 😂
Is that copper tubing for a gas line? Is that even allowed?
Not good on national gas it flakes the inside of the pipe and clogs fixtures and creates leals over time
Could the problem also be a bad limit switch?
No because in that case the inducer motor don't start.
You wouldn't get power to the valve
Hey boss. How much you charge for a job like that?
Just hit it. No manometer 🤣
Andrew Jackson's probably flipping in his grave.
If you used a $50 on that it would’ve stayed 30 times cleaner
Lmao crazy old man !!! Nice made in China !!!!! Lol
Giver the ole gundy
Adam Walker
You must be watching too much Steve Lav. Lmao
I would’ve used a 1 dollar bill 😂
Microamps not milivolts
A 100.bill works best
Can i use a $2 bill? Can't afford 20
