Isuzu MU-X Provent 200 Catch Can - Draining my Catch Can after 9000 km

  • G'Day Guys and Gals!
    In this video i show you how to drain your Provent 200 Catch can and also how much oil my catch can has stopped from going through the intake system on my 2018 Isuzu MU-X.
    It is a good idea to check and drain your catch can approximately every 5000 km especially if it is a Provent 200 as they work extremely well to separate the oil from the crank case ventilation fumes that are circulated back into the intake.
    This is the second time i have drained my catch can in the last 9000 km, first after around 5000 km of having it fitted and now at around 9000 k. The Provent 200 caught approximately 200ml of oil in around 9000 km. When you see this amount of oil in a cup it really puts it into perspective of why it is so important to fit a catch can to your turbo diesel 4x4.
    Thanks alot for watching guys! If you enjoyed this video and would like to see more videos like this. Please like and Subscribe to my channel : )

    Thanks for the video; narrated and edited really well mate. I just had Ultimate Diesel Tuning do a soot clean, tune and fit one to my Pajero Sport. They recommended checking it after two fuel tanks of fuel after it was fitted to get a gauge on how much oil vapour it’s collecting. I’ve done about 4 tanks of fuel and I’ll be checking it tomorrow now lol.

    Best mod I did was installing the Provent 200 at 3000km on the DMax. Drained about half a litre over 20000km. Done monthly it all adds up.
    Re the ball valve, I bought a pack of rubber chair leg end caps. Cheap and keeps the valve clean.

    Hi Nick, good insight into the benefits of installing a catch can, especially the Provent 200. I've got a 2020 3.2 Pajero I've had since new. At 50.000kms I had to get the egr pulled out and cleaned manually as it was very gunky and the valve was sticky and not opening and shutting properly which was causing it to run a bit off and the motor would run on for a second after turning it off and would stop with a shudder. The dpf light was on too. I had it fixed by a independent reputable diesel workshop as i didn't trust the Mitsubishi dealership. Got a Provent 200 catch can fitted and 10.000kms later and no problems. Bit surprised it happened at low klms.

    protip: run new hose towards the radiator along the chassis and strap it to the air deflector under the radiator but out of sight or can't be snagged, it should be about a metre long. this gives you more than 400ml of oil to store in the hose. I also cap off the tap end in case the tap gets turned open and you suck a gutful of dusty air or water if u crossed a river.

    Hi Nik, Your vids are prof. I really appreciate your work. I have no knowledge about diesel turbo charge engine at all. I am a user, driver. It takes me a while to understand Why? Catch can is use to filter out the incomplete combustion diesel residue from outlet of the engine before it returns back to the combustion again. Catch can filter out more than 350ml for every 10,000km, it helps to avoid the 350ml of dirty oil trap in the combustion chamber and pollute the environment. This is an amazing idea. Every diesel engine should add one of this. Good job Nik. My question was after adding this catch can, is there any affects to the fuel consumption? Better or worst?

    Hey nick that’s really good to follow up on this to see how it’s performing. I saw your episode where you fitted it and at that time I wasn’t sure about it as I didn’t know how much oil it would take out and I heard that diesels use a bit of oil but what you’ve just shown looks reasonable. I’ve never had a diesel before and my 2WD Dmax now has about 7200kms on it and I’ll probably get the oil changed between services anyway as I do short trips at the moment and probably will be for the next six months. The service intervals at 15000kms seems a bit long anyway what do you think about that ?

    • @LowRangeNick
      @LowRangeNick  4 роки тому

      I think it's a great idea to change the oil and filter every 10,000km. A catch can would definately look after the intake on your dmax. If you are planning on keeping it long term it is a great investment in the longevity and reliability of your engine. 😊

    I realised if I ran a tube down from the catch can and into an old oil can (through a sealed union I fitted in its cap) the oil would simply drain down the tube and into the sealed can to collect. This way the (still pressurised by blow by gases in the second stage of the catch-can) oil can simply gravity drain any time whether the engine is running or not.

    Thanks for the video Nick. Excuse my ignorance in the following two questions. 1) The hose and fittings into the catch can are quite small so can there be a problem over time as oil residue builds in that line with air flow via the catch can. 2) The DPF is becoming a big issue with class actions already starting, so could adding things such as catch cans into an engine system give manufactures a get out on warranty claims and recalls.

    • @LowRangeNick
      @LowRangeNick  4 роки тому +1

      It is not an issues with the catch can hoses as they are an oil resistant rubber. They will last a very very long time. As for Dpf issues, i havnt heard of many Isuzus having dpf issues. I know the toyota 2.8l have alot of issues. As for warranty, the dealer can only legally deny warranty if the modification is the direct cause of an issue or fault. So there shouldnt be any issues in regards to the dpf as the catch can isnt directly related.

    If you're not pulling that much oil out of yours, congrats, you are running the right oil.
    If you are pulling out that much, the oil you are using is too thin.
    It's not "the thinner the better," those numbers indicate ambient operating temperatures, in spite of what oil marketing suits tell you.
    So unless you're in Tasmania, put the 0w40 back and get 10w50. if it's cold in winter and you drive at night, fine, get some 5wsomething for winter.
    The thinner the oil, the more blow by you get. Go as high on the first viscosity/SAE number as your morning commute. That's in Celsius because we're talking about Australia.

    I have just fitted a Provent 200 to my 2018 ISUZU MUX, I used your very instructional video as a guide, Thanks heaps.
    I do have a question though,
    When I fitted mine, no matter how I routed the hoses, they still seem to touch the intercooler pipe.
    The plumbing on the underside of the intercooler pipe pushes the hose to the catch can up.
    I decided to wrap some antin friction rubber to the intercooler pipe.
    Is this necessary of am I just worrying about nothing?
    Cheers

    • @LowRangeNick
      @LowRangeNick  4 роки тому +1

      Hey Glen! My hoses dont touch the intercooler pipe at all. Maybe the bracket holding the catch can is not on the right rung. You can adjust how high or low the catch can sits and the angle it sits on by removing the catch can from the stainless bracket then removing the black plastic mount from the catch can, at the back there is a little plastic locking tab and some rungs were you can adjust it up and down. It might just need a bit more adjusting to get it to sit right.

    • @chenderson4969

      Glen manning I had the same issue so what I did was rotated the hose anticlockwise on the catch can so it allowed the hose to lay down a bit flatter against the clean/lower hose, that is provided the catch can is in the correct orientation

      That's a great question. Fitting a catch can now is still a good idea. You should also get the intake checked for carbon build up and cleaned if necessary. Good Video. Looks like you are draining about the same amount of oil as I am each 5,000km in my D-Max. I have a Chinese copy of the Provent 200 - it seems to work equally as well - but installing it without a kit was a real pain.
    The catch-can has a fine metal mesh filter instead of the paper one in the Provent 200. So occasionally it might need a wash with solvent, instead of having to replace the paper element - not sure if that's good or bad?
    If you aren't handy at making metal brackets, buying the appropriate installation kit with the Provent 200 is probably worth the expense.

    • @LowRangeNick
      @LowRangeNick  4 роки тому

      That's good to know, interesting that they use a metal style washable filter in the copys, i think the provent filter design may be patented. Maybe that is why. There are a few catch cans on the market with washable filters, they seem to work ok.

In Europe we have a DPD (diesel particulate defuser) exaust which collect the micro particle in order to reduce the pollution and this DPD have to be regenerated regularly (about each 200 miles) increasing the fuel consummation a lot. I guess that one of the reason of such frequent REGEN process is due to the oil going to the engine cylinder but I would like to have your advice before to install a Catch Can. I'm not sure that you have the same depolution system (perhaps you just have adblue).
    More info on DPD here on page 2-73 www.isuzu.co.uk/owners/owners-manuals/isuzu-d-max-2017
    So my question is if you have a DPD, did you saw an improvement in the REGEN cycle (less often) after the installation of the Catch Can ?
    Thank you for all your video. I'm a fan ! They are very usefull because here in Europe there is almost nothing about ISUZU tutorials.
    Jeff

      Hey Jeff! My Mu-x is a 2018 DPF model - no adblue. Fitting the catch can I havnt noticed any difference in DPD burn off.

    That's a LOT to catch over 9000kms. I'd be wondering why you're getting such bad blow by? I collect not even a quarter of that amount over 10,000kms in my Holden Colorado with over 250,000kms and I have a Provent catch can.

    Each time you drain the catch can, a zip tie drops on the ground like you did in this one 🤔
