  • Located in the heart of NYC's Chinatown, Elizabeth Center is like a little Japanese kawaii underground mall. Lots of gift shops are inside, such as anime stores and souvenir shops.

This mall is doing fine with prosperity and still a lot of stores even though there are some vacant storefronts. It is in way much better economic shape than the East Broadway Mall where there are very few stores and in danger of closing or being converted into something else soon.

Yup, the East Broadway Mall is in decline. I'll go back to check it out in the near future.

@@livingvibes8897 Not only just that. The western Cantonese Chinatown roughly between the proximity of Lafayette Street and The Bowery right now is the only section that is still very vibrant and prosperous with heavy pedestrian traffic and a lot of tourists and visitors, which Elizabeth Center is the middle of the Cantonese Chinatown, but you go to the eastern Fuzhou Chinatown just east of The Bowery where the East Broadway Mall is, it is very dead with very few people walking around and a lot of vacant storefronts and not much tourists and visitors although in some parts, there are growing amount of hipster businesses and hipster residents around Essex Street by Canal and Division Streets and around Allen and Eldridge Streets just nearby Delancey Street.

@@supertrouper The busy area is centered on Mott street where there are still full of tourists. The neighborhood you mentioned with the growing amount of hipster businesses/residents is indeed lower east side. Basically, this part of Chinatown is disappearing.

@@livingvibes8897 Just to give you a brief history without too much overwhelming details, the western Cantonese Chinatown is the actual original Chinatown, which is why it has long been the commercial and business center of the Chinese community including attracting tourists and visitors, but whereas eastern Chinatown started developing around the 1970s/80s, but only partially as there were still some remaining Puerto Ricans and Jewish residents and often not a safe area to walk around due to gangs with very few pedestrians and significant amount of vacant storefronts and apartments. Once the Fuzhous started moving into Eastern Chinatown by the 1990s, then it became more fully Chinese like western Chinatown and it did gain some commercial activities, but it still did not match up to western Chinatown as being the main commercial center and tourist and visitor center and now gentrification has pretty much set Chinatown back to the way it used to be during the 1980s with western Chinatown being the only busy commercial center of the Chinese community while eastern Chinatown has gone quiet.

Man I love going to Elizabeth Center it’s a shame that the snack store got replaced by another Sanrio store, although Sanrio makes nice merch and one of my sisters likes Sanrio.
