Surprised there’s no mention of him having an energy bar rather than mana. The real pain in the ass is that you can’t even outlast a finite resource bar, since a few seconds of downtime means he can do it all over agaib
If zed had mana he'd be the strongest champion in the game. His energy keeps his pace in check. Imagine him having unlimited agency to spam whatever he wanted whenever he wanted. Also managing zeds energy is a key part of the champions gameplay that actually makes up a decent amount of his skill ceiling and decision making
that is if we assume that we won't change his cd to match his change to mana
zed is currently a poke mage with no mana issue.
@@326inminecraftyou guys are both stupid. Manaless champs have longer cooldowns but no mana cost. Mana champs have lower CD but mana disadvantage. Late game mana becomes irrelevant so mana champs are theoretically stronger late as manaless ones bc they have higher cooldowns even late game

If he has a mana bar he would just build marumana and maul everyone's ass with it.
I think another reason is that Zed has no actual dash but rather blinks. Like Katarina it makes the champion infinitely more frustrating as many peel or lockdown tools don’t work on him. Veigar cage? Akali stays in there, Zed doesn’t. Milio Q? Zed Jumps over it, Qiyana doesn’t. Poppy W? Zed gets to do his full combo, Fizz doesn’t. The only other champion that can do all of that is Katarina, however her main mobility tool is not free target so it limits her options a bit more.

Like Riot August once said Zed is constantly kept at a weaker state because his neutral unlike other assassins is torture. He likes to torture you before closing in.
i was my teams midlaner as well as shotcaller for 5 years... i was a control mage/artillery mage/ahri style hybrid ap control mage/assassin player. So, ad assassin were often my most annoying matchups, but i used to genuinely feel like zed was usually so much harder to deal with than pretty much anyone else. Eventually i just knew he had essentially the best 1v1 midlane kit in the game, i just needed to outlast him and team fight with my mage. I certainly did win sometimes especially with ahri/old urgot, but i used to feel bad how much help i would ask for in these games laning phases sometimes but riot august admitting he is just not like other assassins the way he can wave clear and proc electrocute from range/even kill you if you arent good at watching the shadows simultaneously. All of this just vindicates my feelings that i KNEW this mf always felt way too over tuned vs the average champion id play in mid lane.

He is constantly kept at a weaker state because low elo players do not know how to play against him. His kit is very one-dimensional and if you put two braincells together you can predict what hes going to do and punish it...
August also talked about how low elos started crying about "no counterplay" when they made it so QSS does not remove his ult but what actually happened was that zeds winrate actually went down because people simply bought armor (lmfao)

Assassin have to put themselves in dangerous situations. Laughs in Ekko and Evelynn
evelyn very much has to be in dangerous situations. she's so damn squishy to die in an eyeblink when not in stealth. and e having it's chargeup time gives them plenty of time to look for her.
ekko needs his ulti to have safety. the w while sizeable has a lot of time to react unless your team sets them up first. not near the same level of safety as zed w.
the caveat of them having too much safety is delay before unleashing their combo. ekko has to wait for W to prime where the opponent can leave while eve has an indicator for her W so opponent can be aware theyre gonna be targeted
Eve is stupidly strong, but if you played her then you would know that she is squishy beyond belief and a terrible duelist. Her pre-6 is one of the weakest in the game and she's horribly vulnerable to invades. Even afterwards, she often needs her 6 for good kill pressure unless she's fed.
Ekko can cc and escape but evelynn has little of that she has to wait for the most perfect time to go in especially early game where if she jumps and they exhaust her she is forced to ult out wasting her source of Surviving and winning engages without much contribution in late game she either flashes or rocketbelts then pray the adc explodes without her getting interrupted
Ngl, riot made sure every high risk assassin has a high chance of escaping. All except for 2ish, one of them being Rengar.
Zed the champions himself is one fo the reason I permaban him when I play mid, but from experience (between low plat and low emerald the last 2 to 3 years) I feel like Zed players are extremely dedicated to their champs, and by that I mean that they are completely lost whenever they have to play something else. The number of times I stomped my ennemy midlaner and checked their profile postgame only to see that the had hundreds of thousands of mastery points with zed and barely 50.000 with their secondary champion felt way higher than any other champ community
Yeah I see this happening with a lot of one tricks of champions that are dominate non-competitive league like yone, darius (and in this case zed). They are only used to their really opressive champion so when they eventually cant play it bc its banned/picked they throw the game bc they either dont know how to competently play anyone else OR they are so used to getting away woth really risky and stupidly bullshit decisions that they end up inting bc they overestimated themselves.
Well Zed is really only good if played perfectly so you have to spend a lot of time playing him.

some hook champion mains hate her bc of black shield. i agree alot of low level players hate her bc they cant dodge a skillshot but her black shield and kill pressure is scary.
As a tank naut supp main, I hate her E waaay more than her Q
I'd rather be called low skill than dealing with the game's goofy ahh hitboxes, also her E is probably one of, if not the strongest basic ability in the game

What pissed me off about Zed is you know he's coming and you know he is going to get away with it. Zed ult is the most telegraphed "I'm going to kill you now" engage button, but if you're playing a squishy with no "get off me" tool you know he's gonna get away with it anyway. Its infuriating.
He's not overpowered but damn is he so often not fun to play into.

@@raidcr7404 easy enough to say as a mid player, they have tools to deal with him. If you're an ADC you're burning sums or dead, plain and simple. God help you if you're playing Kog'maw, Miss Fortune, or pre-6 Xayah who have basically no tools to escape otherwise.
@@bmac4 Thats why positioning is key. I have no issues as Vel koz cause I take flash ghost and I know how to position. IF I die, I die with purpose and trade 1 for 1 or win a team fight with that. I hate when people use it as excuse
@@raidcr7404 How exactly do you 'position' to not be in range of a Zed? Other than being in an entirely different lane, that dude has every single tool necessary to get right on top of your ass and then back out in 0.3 seconds. Even if your entire team huddles up on you the moment he ults you, he can just leave by going back to his R shadow, then hit you with a Q (or 2 depending on the range) while he runs away and in most situations that's more than enough damage for his ult's damage to pop and finish you off. Zero consequence. If it doesn't kill you, it leaves you at like, 100 hp, at which point you have to base anyway. ADCs literally do not get to play the game when there is a Zed involved.

Zed players love to say it's low elo player that can't deal with him but even at high elo his ban rate is very high for his pick rate and win rate.
He's obnoxious at all ranks is why, I can't imagine anyone actually enjoying fighting that slippery rat
It somewhat makes sense, let's say you're low elo (gold or below) and you decide to permaban Zed because you find the matchup hard to win.
Over the years, you eventually climb to diamond and decide to ban Ahri instead because she's permapicked with 54% winrate. You fight a Zed and he stomps you since you haven't played against him in two years, so you just go back to permabanning him.
People don't take the time to learn the matchup so when they arrive in higher rank the matchup still feels impossible to win and they just go back to banning him. Thus why he keeps a high banrate no matter the rank
sub 10% ban rate and 4% pick rate with 100% of them are onetricks for 10 seasons yeah it is high I think copium

@@elathicc6811 thats a stupid analogy first of all his ban rate drops by staggering 10% in high elo so players do know how to play against him quite well and the reason for that is because once players actually start to understand how to observe instead of just play the game they start realizing they can just use the cc ability after the guy ults them under tower and he will be stunned for long enough to kill him the reason why zed isnt a high elo pick is because his one shot pattern is so trash not even a triple q with aa and e can kill the enemy from 100 to 0 without 3 or more items on the other hand qiyana and talon can easly do it just by jumping at whoever 3 or more times
Ad carries hate this trick. Its called the adc disappear trick. Seriously, as soon as this guy appears on my screen, hes inside of me, he gets out, gives me a shuriken in the face because at close range, sidestepping this is quite difficult, and boom, death mark explodes, grey screen, skill issue. This is a Zed past 20 minutes regardless of how much gold he has or how much I have. Other assassins oneshot me quite the same, but at least my support can interrupt the majority of them. Imagine a well placed Thresh flay to kick Akali or Talon out of their dashes or a nice Lulu polymorph to make the enemy Katarina look like a fool. But no, Zed blinks around as he pleases and becomes untargetable for quite some time. Peeling is not possible except you have very fast Point and Click lockdown, and no adc has that and not a lot of supports either. Mages have either more range, build health or have lockdown, but marksman are screwed. Especially against this guy. A few times, I was able to outplay an Akali or a Qyiana, but never a Zed, its just that stupid what this guy is allowed to do!

Among velkoz mains we joke about the top 3 of artillery mages: Xerath, Ziggs, and Zed.
Because Velkoz is just that insanely weak and gets weaker every update, meanwhile Zed is just an AD artillery mage with a point click finish once he has poked someone low enough

Zed is literally the least point and click assassin in the game, his q which holds most of his damage is a hard skill shot, not to mention you have to hit 2 or sometimes even 3 qs in order to get a kill. No other assassin needs this much positioning, and passing constant skill checks

As a jungle main the moment I see an enemy Zed I just immediately give up on ever trying to gank mid because that little shit will always find a way to make sure you waste your time, even when he’s over extended.
Hmmm an AD assassin champ that has the easiest way to engage and escape from 100-0 a squishy champ and sometimes tankier champs with little to no counterplay except hard CC would be banned HALF of the time playing league

@@ST-in7fo Run in at mach 10 with ult (or ult + ghost/flash if you want the easiest engage), press q to kill, if q doesnt kill auto 3 times for another one, get out with ult ms.
The only way he can 100-0 a champ is if they are in isolation and he also has to waste all his CDs to do that after which he is a sitting duck
Also one properly timed flash or dash and 80% of his damage is out the window
He's basically a manaless AD burst mage

Yasuo's problem is he is just overkitted, why the fuck does he have the best tank passive in the game, it not only stops initial dmg, but gives him shield against follow up dmg, then it comes back up in 10 seconds. On a champion with CC, infinite dashes, a windwall that stops almost every bot/sup ult, no mana costs, and does tons of damage. People are like "just cc him", I'm like how? When his passive shield, windwall, tornado, are all down and he has nothing to dash to? So never?
@@briansmith3566 yasuo is a melee adc without the melee HP or resis. A dash thats target only unlike yone or viego. Catch him in a gank and he can only dash towards you. If thats too much work, you can also straight counter pick him with hard cc(panth, renek, dar, etc).

"On a champion with CC, infinite dashes, a windwall that stops almost every bot/sup ult, no mana costs, and does tons of damage." - he needs to hit 3 skillshots to land a cc in a teamfight. on paper he has infinite dashes, in reality he will dash like twice in a teamfight in river, if lucky, he actually needs a lot of support for a midlaner, cause he has no real get away tool on the sidelanes, other than maybe smartly using jg camps somehow, if they are even there. his w cd is high af, you can play around it, it's not like you're gonna try and burst a pantheon with his E up either no? W also useless against non projectile threats so there's that. oh also his shield is close to useless if you have a tool to poke it down before dealing real damage. he's actually a well designed champion.
people love just listing things a champ theoretically could do in an ideal scenario, just like their favorite toxic content creators when they are frustrated they're still hardstuck master after playing 16 hours a day. ❤
Zed being an ad control mage was especially true last season. Ravenous Hydra Zed quite literally never had to go in. He could just endlessly clear waves while poking you down and also healing up any retaliatory damage.
Anyone who says otherwise clearly doesnt understand that Zed can do too much, quack about “skill issue” when ur given a musket against a guy with a machine gun. its nice vars clearly explains why its so frustrating to play against him, but just as vindicating when said zed player gets beaten down into a paste

I mean, i've personally aways countered Zed with my good 'ol pantheon mid. It's so funny to poke him back with Q and suddenly he lost 2/4 of his hp while you're still healthy or even better: Him using his shadow to avoid your W or Q and getting stat checked to death while you have more damage and damage negation tools (E).

I just dont like playing against him as xerath because while i know his ult puts him right behind me, my stun duration scales with distance traveled and its like nothing point blank, so i barely interupt his combo :(

At the time we had fun, trying to make Zed-Aphelios botlane work because of this qute. No synergy what so ever, but Aph was my main at the time, and he is almost a Zed onetrick, so we thought why not...

As someone who played ADC alot in the past... The problem with Zed is the lack of counterplay.
Zed basically decides you'll die and you die.
Zed is simply a control mage first and assassin second.
He has always been.
Even more than leblenk.
That is why i played him and mained him even tho i first started with mid lane mages.
There is just something about having an oriana ball a zed shadow or an azir soldier extending your sphere of influence and play options!
it is addictiong he is such a fun champ.
Too bad i dont have time to play leage anymore.
I mained kassdin too i guess his blink allowed him the options i like.
I remember when Zed first was released he was menace in low elo but the old talon with his dash silence would destroy him😂

I would love if you could do a video on blitzcrank. He is I'm pretty sure the most banned support across every elo no matter how strong or weak he is. Also I don't think you've ever talked about him before so it would be nice to hear your thoughts on him.
I know this may be unrelated, Season 13 was also the season where Riven was at her strongest, being able to scale after falling behind early against Tanks with superior damage and rotations. Now Riven suffers the same earlygame shortcomings, but lacks the scaling. Riven scales off two things: Armor Penetration and Haste, both moreso than actual AD. Yes, the shield strength and passive stacks benefit from AD, but Armor Pen and Haste are much more conducive to Riven's gameplay.

If you only have 2 of those, you're not an assassin, which is why, to me, Naafiri isn't an assassin, she's a diver.
Why yes i love a point and click ultimate which deals an insane amount of damage even if i killed him, and yes i love having to deal with a champ with a flash on like a 6 second cooldown.
you can dodge his qs and his ult will be the least dmging ult in the game, and whats the problem that its point and click? malz ult is point and click, veigar ult that can deal 5k dmg is point and click, Vi ult is point and click and once lock on, nothing can make her stop
Better than flash ng, it's a "Blink when you want on a longer distance than flash plus copy your abilities"

"Just dodge it" doesn't solve the issue with Zed or any skillshot champion at that
Point and click abilities are not fun to play against for anybody, cc, ults, skills, anything, because there is no counterplay to them when they got already pressed on you and you can't avoid and enemy for the emtire game so they can't press a button on you

As a Lissandra main, i sometimes forgot how oppressive is Zed for other champions
Zed is a poke AD mage. With a flash on low cooldown, a flash on ult, and another flash on summs. You simply can't do anything about a zed who plays perfectly and has low cooldowns. Pretty much the exact same playstyle as leblanc.
my permaban is pantheon. As someone who mains ryze, pantheon oneshots me at level 2+ in earlygame, has the same engage range as me, has a teleport that does damage, has more range, and is on a lower cooldown so I can never just leave lane, and has no counterplay because of his w. if I mained an artillery mage I wouldn't have any issues, but here we are.

Great video. I don't play league anymore and I don't hate Zed (I'm about plat ELO), I think because he is very difficult to pull off and harder to execute in team settings.
This video highlights why I have ALWAYS hated Lee Sin tho. Can't escape, one he lands Q he can just mash everything else for ridiculous damage, and very safe with his kick.
And dont forget he is the only asassin who can comfortably fight any class, including tanks/bruisers.
Not really against tanks, yeah sure he can kill tanks but doing so is wasted and unprofitable for zed and his team
early game yeah zed doesn't do that much dmg as other assassins, but give it a bit of time and he starts killing your adc and non tank supports with R>E>AA

A long complaint about Zed's W, basically. It allows him to attack from a distance.
However, it's got a cd of 20 seconds, that in the lane phase at 1 full item goes to maybe 17 seconds. CD starts when the w ends.
The w has a cast time, so when it's thrown out, you have time to move away if you weren't already zoning around it, and the shurikens are skillshots.
Zed is a mostly kill based champion that can also be outplayed heavily. So, if you stop walking into the one combo he has repeatedly and then overstay, maybe you won't need to ban him.
That's basically it, right there. People are feeling oppressed by Zed because they have no idea how he works. They can see his strengths, but he has serious weaknesses that if you know about them you can exploit them. I'd wager most people don't know how long Zed's W cooldown is and how little power he has in the lane without it. Hell, just look at *every single example provided in the video*. Not once was a play mentioned that didn't revolve around an ability with a 20 second cooldown, because Zed's incredible neutral game revolves around it.
Then there's Razor Shuriken, his 'oppressive poke'. There's no way to make it obvious in game so I can't blame people for not knowing, but everything beyond the first thing it hits takes only 60% damage from the shuriken, and it's on a 6 second cooldown.
As a lane opponent, Zed's a knowledge check, plain and simple... but with nearly 200 champions in the game, I don't blame anyone for not knowing.
I feel like making zeds energy more like mana would be a step in the right direction. I wouldnt want to give him mana cause he is clearly an energy class, but one could reduce the energy cost of his abilities and also reduce the energy regeneratiin rate. Then he could still use like two combos in a row, but after that ther would actually be downtime. Currently it feels like energy is a nonissue for zed and that really limits the counterplay options
The thing is a lot of the energy champions don't struggle to spam their abilities later like the mages that bought Seraphs or the ad champions that bought Manamune. I think they should hammer way more down on all those things, league used to be way more about managing that, now at basically 20-ish (sometimes even before) minutes everybody spams their abilities recklessly.
I've always felt like zed wouldn't be so bad if his loving shadow had health so you could get rid of it.
As someone who used to play a lot of Zed one of the complaints I see is that his roams are very strong so even if you win lane, you still might just lose to botlane dying to him. I would much rather play against a good Zed than a Yone or Zoe though.
As a talon player couldn't have said it any better i play zed mostly when i cant roam(enemy have set ups that prevent me form getting advantage form roaming) or my enemy have a better neutral that easily push up lane very fast for me to benefits/stronge poke that prevent me form roaming which make zed a better option in those scenarios his flexible playstyle really help out if u know what ur doing with him well im not saying my main playstyle is bad but its less flexible and more risky than zed for sure but that my opinion
His weakness is that he isn't a champion before level 3. And that's enough to not be picked up by pro players, because those first 2 levels are too important to be sitting around doing nothing. You'll just see the Zed get bullied to death by the enemy, level 2 gank included, while Zed patiently waits for level 3. Even his level 3 is a little weak because of his W CD. It's so long that the W is forced into being a defensive tool rather than an offensive one. Zed has good neutral game only as long as his W is available.
i still haven't recovered from season 13 zed tbh, unless im top/jungle he is my absolute perma ban...

Beside the pointd you made which i agree with, is his nasty one shot combo (shadow into q e swap with shadow than aa) its way to fast imo. Even if doesnt fed its annoying. Also even of i get even with him, he can just go bot and usually he gets a kill or two and my work of keeping him small is thrown out the windows. I always ban him, even if i play a different role.

Zed main here, another point on why I think people dislike him, is because of the way his ultimate works, the dmg not being instand but leaving you alive for a some time even tho you know you're already dead, I think people find it frustaiting.

the best quote in this video is: that man ca do far to much while making u "belive" there is no counterplay. The problem is that there is to much counterplay, ppl just dont want to use it, so they perma ban him and nerf him bcs ppl wont learn to play against. There are champs that dictate that you need to change how you play in order to deal with them just like everyone knows cc the fed master yi and gg, yes its a bit more complex to deal with zed but he can feel sooooo underwhelming when ppl can play, thats why i pryty much why i cant play zed in this season, hes just bad. sure last season he had a very good build, but its all gone and the winrate and pickrate have gone to the bottom
I think another issue is he is an "AD" assassin. He can build items that increase his survivability without necessarily sacrificing his one shot potential. He is able to build items like Deaths Dance or Cleaver to keep himself alive during a misplay. It is just instead of dealing 2x your total hp in one combo, he deals 1.5x: you are still dead either way. items like zhonyas and guardian angel may prevent the hard burst, but they leave you a sitting duck for his follow up that will inevitably come.
IMO they need to stop giving AD items damage and survivability in spades. Items like Deaths Dance shouldnt be giving AD, armor, CD, a heal, and %damage reduction. If melee champs inherently get so much survivability in their kit/stats, then they shouldnt also be getting them from items. This is also why adc feels like such a bad role to play. You can be 5/0 with 3 full items and will still die under turret to a 1/4 Zed with 2 items without a return kill unless YOU make the outplay.

Zed does a good job of poking people out, but Soraka also does that and heals herself.
Zed can all in all his abilities easily. Unless Soraka Es her feet and makes him a sitting duck.
Don't get me wrong, she doesn't Win the lane, but Zed doesn't either. They both come out starved, but as a Support, Raka can manage that a lot better.
Not really about the pressure part. An assasin, only by not being seen in the map applies a lot of pressure in every non-tank/bruiser champion

I will forever hate riot for letting ravenous hydra be a zed item for so many fucking seasons. Giving an assassin AOE wave clear + healing + CD means he just perma shoves, and even if he hits only 1 ability on you it does double damage. Single handedly ruined my midlane experience because that was always his first rush item
Zed is at the upper echelon of what league champions should be. Immobile and simple champs played perfectly don’t have a right to beat a zed that plays perfectly. He’s a champion that necessitates you learn another high tempo champ to beat him solo which actually makes him a healthy balancing force on the game. He’s the safest assassin so you have to play an assassin to get kill pressure on him.

Zed unfortunately has an extremely counter intuitive counterplay. His in-lane poke is very good, and his lane is extremely safe whenever his W is off CD. His ult damage is very telegraphed, but that doesnt exactly matter much when a lot of other midlaners dont have a way to do anything about it outside of exactly hourglass.
Also, rather annoyingly, his downside of being comparatively lower damage when compared to other assassins ceases to matter if he gets sufficiently ahead
maybe it's just because I've been a mid laner so long and picked up zed in like season 6 but if you know how they play it doesn't feel that bad to go against. You can beat zed as a lux or any other immobile mage if you play smart
there are very few zed players, but there are a lot more people who cant be bothered to learn why hes so bad if he isnt played by the best of the best, why hes banned so much despite having the clearest counterplay opportunities out of a lot of other assassins, if people bothered to stop banning him and actually understand how he works, they could ban something more problematic and have a decent time playing a champ whose matchups are basically exclusively skill matchups and knowledge checks
It's a lot simpler than this. The only thing people hate more than getting oneshotted is getting styled on, and Zed is an extremely stylish champion 😎👌

I think one aspect people are getting wrong with zed is the amount of counters he has ,even if only early game ,champs like Kennen (even tho not a midlaner still a good matchup ) ,renekton ,lissandra ,oriana ,ahri etc ,even tho some of these get 50-50 later in the game ,as the game is faster paced ,early game presence matters more .Yeah his neutral is good ,but try playing neutral the whole game with zed and the enemy mid will just roam and get an advantage ,if you actually never play aggressive with zed you rarely deal significant dmg ,especially in team fights .I am saying this as a Thresh main n case some people will try to call be biased
Another reason he gets banned is so idiots on your own team don't pick him and throw because they can't play him.
