both awesome machines. We are living in the golden age of performance machines boys. pick a machine and get out and have a blast with your family and friends.
Both completely stock off showroom floor... tires and all. Maverick had 8.5 pounds in tires, RZR had 7. Maverick driver is 220#, RZR driver 175#. RZR had about 1/3 tank gas, Maverick was almost full. Both had 2.4 hours of run time on them at time of race. Maverick had factory toolkit and an air pump in glove box, RZR did not ;-) We ran several more races than shown, but those were the most fair on the starts, etc. We are both very experienced drivers and this video was made as fair as possible. Also, this was filmed at approx. 3,000 ft elevation.
Ken Peterson Thanks for the extra info Ken. I'm just a little confused about the results. If the maverick won on pavement and dune hill, then why did it lose on the flat dirt? Anyway, keep the cool videos coming!
Michael McCutcheon We did a few there where the Maverick pulled it a little, but these were the closest starts.... Traction leaving the line on that surface would be my answer as to why the Polaris won those two. On the second race there, you can see the Can Am closing by the finish. Pretty short run also. We were finishing around 70 mph on the pavement, didn't notice on that dirt race.
+Michael McCutcheon There is a saying in drag racing. Spinning aint winning. The ground in the flat race seemed to be a harder surface with loose on top. That makes for a slippery surface. The deeper sand like the hill climb part had makes for a decent amount of grip. Lots of pushing through sand but lots to grab onto. That would be my guess. Thanks for the upload!!
Overall very evenly matched. Looks like Maverick won on street and dune hill, RZR won on flat dirt. Some questions on the testing methodology: 1 - Were both machines broken in completely? I've read on various automotive forums that, at least for cars, the HP increases slightly after being fully broken in. How many miles were on each vehicle at time of testing? 2 - How much gas was in each vehicle? If one had a full tank and the other was nearly empty, it could seriously affect the race as fuel is very heavy 3 - How heavy were the riders? If one were 50 pounds or more than the other this could affect the outcome. 4 - Was tire pressure adjusted for each of the different testing scenarios? I've heard that you are supposed to lower the pressure on dunes. What were the tire pressures on each machine at time of testing? If the Maverick was faster overall I would have expected it to win all 3 races, but it didn't, so I'm betting the small difference was likely due to setup or break-in or possibly clutch settings, etc.
+Michael McCutcheon "Looks like Maverick won on street and dune hill, RZR won on flat dirt. " If the Maverick wins on the street and loses on flat dirt all that means is the Maverick was spinning more and it was a traction issue. Obviously no one was spinning on the street and the Maverick walked it.
I could not afford either machine; I'll stick with my 2015 RZR S 900. BUT here are some numbers for the two machines in video: 2016 Can Am Maverick X ds 1000R Turbo DPS ($22,999 | Base Turbo $20,399) 131 HP | 976 cc | 1,399 lbs | 13" ground clearance | 15"/16" travel | 10 gal tank 2016 Polaris RZR XP Turbo EPS ($24,999) 144 HP | 925 cc | 1,495 lbs | 13.5" ground clearance | 16"/18" travel | 9.5 gal tank If I wanted a turbo for speed and for a better price = Maverick. If I wanted a turbo for speed and a smoother ride = RZR.
Both look like great machines!! If I were buying new it would come down to: my dealer, parts availability (Both OEM and Aftermarket) and, ease of maintenance.
That was the 1st video I have ever seen where the maverick was even close. Makes me wonder if this video was skewed some how or all the other ones before that I watched. Im in the market for a side by side, I dont have a rooting interest. My research to this point says get the RZR without a doubt though.
Let's see rzr had bigger stock tires and way better suspension so if you care about more than straight line stock performance the choice is easy. Not to mention the superior 4wd system on the Polaris. I want to see both machines on 30" tires as that is a common upgrade for this caliber of machine. Polaris already comes with 29" tires can am..... Not so much. Both great machines. Polaris is better overall performer though.
If polaris didn't down size the engine to a 925cc I think they would have had more torque to get off the line better. Cause now you have to let that turbo spool up. Not to say that those Rotax engine's are torque monster's. I'm getting an 850 xmr and I rode a buddy's 800r and that alone had lots of torque.
Reliabilty ok!!! But not fast enough which means less fun!!! I had a rage r130!!! Even watch the videos there on my UA-cam more power more fun!! Just my opinion
Ronnie Smith Okay.. lol.. Don't need to use three exclamtion marks in each sentence. And I'm not going to check your channel out. I was just putting that out there. But you seem mad..
Kyle Fitzgerald ya thats hard to believe yamaha has been top quality for ever id say better quality than both polaris and canam but not the power oviously
+Kyle Fitzgerald lol yea you do know yamaha invented the sport sxs didn't you fan boy? The rhino started it all! Before that Polairs was a bottom feeder no one liked they didn't even make their own engines and where about as reliable as a weather man. Don't you worry yamaha has always been a game changer.
Josh dmchvac No they haven't. I own a yamaha rhino and it's the biggest peace of shit. Also own a 450 kodiak eps. The only yamaha I've like was my 450. Now I'm switching because can am and polaris are better. so I know what I'm talking about because I've own a few. And after riding in a rzr it's a game changer. Plus the YXZ 1000 from yamaha look's nothing but ugly.
Im honestly impressed that the maverick still beats the new rzr model. I have to say though that the polaris' handle and ride waay better that BRP's products.
thats not evenly matched... lol ... you know what it takes to beat someone on a drag race track... every inch is lots of money in a drag car... those wins by the mav are by one full sxs lenght... in drag racing thats a absoulete killing the popo.... and its 13 hp more? .... and its nothing to do with belt... its to do with traction mostly... they do like two of each race... so about 8 races and the popo only beats the mav in the two dirt races... and not by as much as the mav beat the popo on the street and in the sand....
KwikRacing800 also all this break in garbage.. it does not matter i have owned can ams since 06 and raced them since 07 and any new machines i have had had no more power then when i was breaking them in... seen that on a dyno too... its all in the head with this break in thing...

Michael McCutcheon Both machines had less than 20 miles on them, the 20 miles were belt break-in miles.
Michael McCutcheon OMG just except the fact that the rzr got smoked by the maverick!!!! wait got spanked ;)
Rene Sanchez lets see some jumps and woops
+Michael McCutcheon "Looks like Maverick won on street and dune hill, RZR won on flat dirt. "

Did I see the front wheels come off the ground in that 2nd asphalt race?
Zach Lange Yes you did lol! Polaris has less torque. Those rotaxs motors are known to be the torque monsters on the atv and side x side industries.
That was the 1st video I have ever seen where the maverick was even close. Makes me wonder if this video was skewed some how or all the other ones before that I watched. Good testing and both are great machines can am seems to be the faster of the two
yeah they're still pretty even
Omg I live where this test was!!! I fell special.
Nice UTV Drag Contest....what about hill climb drag race?
Houston we have a problem!
its about time!!!
great video like the fact that they were tested equally
looks like I am going to buy MAVRICK TURBO :)
AND THE 2016 BASE TURBO MAVERICK131 IS $5000 LESS THAN THE RZR EVERYBODY AND STILL NICER THAN THE RZR! GET SMART ABOUT YOUR PURCHASE!
its better the rzr.
Great job guys.

what a cool place to drag race.
Both nice machines
Is this a 100% Stock 131 Turbo Can-Am? Not tuned?
Yes. Both completely stock off the showroom floor
Well we know for a fact the new Yamaha will be better built and better quality...

+Kyle Fitzgerald I agree. I would be embarrassed to call a 925 a 1000. That's like calling my 70" tv an 80" lol
LOL don't think drivers would make much diff, they just need to smash gas peddle :-)
What the name dunes
oh and the Polaris has more HP, Doesnt look like it helps all that much, LOL Ill stick to my CanAm for the Comfort and more reliability
Hmm. They do not impress me at all. both are pretty much balanced, and they have their own unique engines. Both have strengths, and weaknesses.
Don't understand why they don't put a bigger or even just more powerful engine ???
+Ronnie Smith Reliability. When you have something that has worked good for a number of year's, why get rid of it?
Reliabilty ok!!! But not fast enough which means less fun!!! I had a rage r130!!! Even watch the videos there on my UA-cam more power more fun!! Just my opinion

Ronnie Smith Alright... go play on your child's toy. Seeya bitch
I'll stick with my shade tree boosted 1000 for now.
damn you can't complain the maverick hauls ass
what's up
Let's see Yamaha's new hot rod before anyone buys
Yamaha has a new utv coming out in September it be cheaper polaris and camam to much money
dustin rudder Yeah but that's because polaris and can am are better then a peace of junk yamaha sidexside.
Kyle Fitzgerald ya thats hard to believe yamaha has been top quality for ever id say better quality than both polaris and canam but not the power oviously
+Kyle Fitzgerald lol

Can am the best
