How to Plasti Dip Rims - Step By Step (Walk Through)

  • I will show you how to Plasti Dip wheels the proper way, my way. Showing you all a matte black finish, satin finish, gloss finish and silver metalizer finish. Apply a minimum of 6 coats starting off with a few light coats at first. If you have a more complex wheel make sure to be careful for runs by not spraying to heavy. You could also roll the wheel around to spray any missed spots if needed. Wait 15-20 minutes between each coat, the more coats you put the better, more durable and easier to peel off in the long run if you want. You could always spray a different color over the existing Plasti Dip color if you want to change it after a certain amount of time. Clean, Spray, Peel.
    Whats needed?
    - Respirator (Harsh To Inhale Dip)
    - Spray Nine/Soap & Water (Cleaning Product)
    - Microfibre Towel (Cleaning Cloth)
    - Plasti Dip (Spray Product - heat in water before spraying_
    - Armor All Tire Shine/Tape (For Tire)
    - Dip Coat/Dip Shield (After Care)
    - Warm/Heated Area (Dont Spray In The Cold)
    1. REMOVAL OF WHEELS:You could either spray the wheels on the vehicle and mask the brake caliper and rotor with stuffing a bag behind the rim covering it all or if you perfer to spray them off the vehicle which i like to do because i feel like i could get more coverage around the whole wheel, jack up the vehicle and remove wheels.
    2. CLEANING: Spray the wheels down with spray nine cleaner or soap and water then wipe off all the dirt, grime and debris that may be on the wheel, make sure to get the outer lip of the rim and also in the lug nut area. Heat (if needed) and dry rims completely making sure their is no more loose dirt or water.
    3. TIRE SHINE/TAPE TIRE: When the wheels are clean and dry. You want to tire shine the side wall of the tire so when you do spray your plasti dip it will come off much easier on the tire. Put a fair amount but their is no need to soak the tire. Be careful not to get any tire shine on the rim. I like to spray tire shine on a microfiber cloth and wipe around the side wall carefully making sure i cover the whole side wall in tire shine. Armor all tire shine works great for me. You could also tape the tires up but that could be time consuming. When you give the rim a coat make sure to spray the tire side wall as well so it will bubble up and peel off easy.
    4. SPRAY: As soon as your done that, heat up your plasti dip cans with either a heat gun or a bucket of hot water and let them sit for 15-20 minutes, shake well and your ready to spray! Were going to use one can per rim 4 black, one wheel will be matte, next wheel will be satin, third wheel will be gloss and last wheel i will show silver metalizer. Start off with a couple light coats and get heavier as you go on but make sure you don't go too heavy where runs could occur. You could do as much coats as you want. The more you do the longer lasting and more durable it is. After 3-4 coats turn the wheels so you could get the spots you might have not got full coverage on yet. Wait 15-20 minutes between each coat
    5. PEEL TIRE/AFTER CARE: After you got a full coverage on your wheels i usually wait 1-2 hours and then peel off the tire. You will notice it will all be bubbled up and lifted just grab a piece and it will come off easy leaving you with a completed project! Apply Dip Coat/Dip Shield after to increase durability and protection. If applied correctly with the right amount of Plasti Dip coats (minimum of 6) it will last you 2-3 years
    HOW TO PROTECT YOUR PLASTI DIP:
    • Protect Your Plasti Di...
    HOW TO CLEAN/MAINTAIN PLASTI DIP:
    • How To Clean & Maintai...
    You could wash your vehicle with a pressure washer or run it through a car wash. Remember only soap and water is needed to clean the wheels. Brake dust pro also works great as a touchless wash by spraying the wheel waiting abit and then pressure wash the wheels and they will be clean! Dip shield will also extend the life of the wheels as it acts like a wax!

      I'm doing my Avalon rims today. The clear coat is pedaling so I'd like your thoughts. I plan to use Aircraft paint striker to remove the clear coat completely. Then once they are completely dry, I plan on 3 coats of black followed by 2 coats of Black Sapphire and then 2 coats of Glosifier. I dont plan to put any clear coat back on prior to dipping my wheels. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve only plasti dipped using matte black and notice they pick up dirt quicker but I like the look of matte black, will adding the satirizer fix that problem; as is have a similar look but should be easier to clean as it will have a smoothe top layer like a glosifier or in person does the satinizer look a lot different than the matte?

      Hey! If you are looking to do a flat black, just use black plasti dip and clear coat them after with plasti dip clear or if you want a more semi permanent finish use 2k clear coat by spraymax

    • @tombates9122
      @tombates9122 4 роки тому +1

      Yeah, i'd recommend plasti-dip if you just want flat black, especially on new rims. Just make sure you use plenty of coats and that, apart from the first 1 or 2, they are laid on thick. It sounds counter-intuitive but plasti-dip is easiest to remove when it was laid on thick, as it tends to peel off in larger pieces. The cool thing about plast-dip is that it will actually protect the original finish of your new wheels so, if you ever decide to sell them, you can return them to original condition really easy.

    Thank you so much for this educational video. I have a question if anyone could help me…. I have a Nissan Maxima (SL Sports Edition) that came factory with 19” black rims. The black paint is starting to peel and chip off a little bit. Even though it’s black underneath the paint, it still bothers me and I don’t like how it looks. Do I need to have the paint taken off of my wheels before I can spray them with the plasti-dip since they are starting to peel? Thanks for any help.

    • @EhabHalat

      Hey thanks for the comment. If you want those wheels to look perfect then i suggest you take all the black paint off because if you go over it you will still see the chips/peeled paint underneath the plasti dip

    Will Plastic Dip cover blemishes caused by rubbing against sidewalk edges? If not, how does one prepare a rim so it looks good after applying Plasti Dip?

    • @EhabHalat
      @EhabHalat  6 років тому +1

      Chris Mack hey, it will cover the curb damage but it will show underneath the dip because it takes the shape of the rim. You will have to repair the curb damage by sanding it down making it as smooth as possible before coating the rims.

    I dipped my sons rims a few years ago, but he didn't leave it on long. My question, I didn't like the way the lug nuts felt when I tightened them up. Like I was tightening against rubber! I question that part. Any ideas or concerns with that, Not getting the proper torque on the lugnuts, especially tightening against a rubber base instead of the rim.

    • @EhabHalat

    If you leave the rims on the car while you spray. And then have to change the tire, this will damage the coat on lug nuts, but will it also peel of the rims too since it was sprayed together?
    Im just trying to figure out if i should take the time to remove the rims or be lazy n just spray while on the car. Spray one rim, then next n by the time im back to the first rim its should be ready for its next coat.

      @@EhabHalat what is the difference with AutoDip. A local place does entire cars, and they said they'd do my wheels in gloss black for about $300. Isn't that a little high or do they do something different than what is shown here? Thanks.

      @@EhabHalat Thanks for the feedback. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't getting ripped off, or if I should just spend $100 or so in materials and do it myself. I have zero experience with it though. They said $280 for matte black and it was a little over $300 for gloss black. I couldn't find anyone else local to compare with. Only other options I looked into were powder coating, and checking several places, it was anywhere from $750 and up.

    I've watched so many videos on this. Some sand paper the rims at first as well ? Really wanna do this to mine. However I wouldn't wanna mess it up either. Couldn't you just take the rim off the tire as well ?

    • @EhabHalat
      @EhabHalat  4 роки тому

      No need to sand the rim down when using plasti dip. Don’t take the tires off because the plasti dip will get ruined when putting the tires back on with the tire machine. Use tire shine on the side walls and spray the side walls with every coat you do that way it will be easy to peel the dip off the side wall of the tire after or you can just tape the side wall of the tire off
