In 2020, I started getting into comics. One of the first things I did was search for the top 10 list of best DC and Marvel comics. Your video was one that I watched. We are the same age, I have 2 daughters too, and we both like X-Men. I started watching more and buying your recommendations. I haven't been disappointed yet. So yes, these videos are great, thanks for doing them.
Really great list, hitting the core heroes, an event, some Vertigo stuff and some smaller series. The only book I would add if you could have 11 would be Geoff Johns Green Lantern, a perfect place to learn about the Corps and just an amazing read overall.
Could you do a list on whats worth reading from the new 52? I hear good things about Animal Man, Booster Gold and some Batman but I still don't know much about 52 stories.
Gotham Central (and Catwoman by Brubaker) were the first DC comics I read in like 10-15 years when I came back to reading comics. I hadn't picked up a DC comic since Batman Beyond was still on TV!
Thank you! I'm trying to get those JSA books in the EU but the distribution of those books are a mess. Anyway it's funny how you promote the DC stuff and the company doesn't give a damn.
First thanks for a such a great video and for noting some great titles. Would you happen to have a video on best way to store Omni’s? Some say upways, others say sideways. All I can say is there have been a few that the pages have fallen forward from being stored upways and I ended up replacing with individual GN and now avoid Omni’s as I am scared of damaging them. Appreciate any thoughts you may have and If you have a video, that would be great too. Thanks.
Omar, you do an amazing job, bro! Keep up the good work. I thought I knew comics well until I saw your channel. You have convinced me to give JSA by Geoff Johns a try. All 3 omnis are in my Amazon cart. Keep up the good work! You're doing great! Hopefully one day I can throw money at your channel. Oh yeah, go big blue! 🤣😉

Very thought through list. There’s one for each of the trinity. One justice league, one JSA that introduced golden age, Sandman that will drive new readers to Lucifer, Hellblazer and more. Gotham central for a look at ordinary people in the DC universe. The only ones I will add is John’s GL to go with Waid’s Fladh. As well as the upcoming Justice league dark: rebirth omnibus. JLD is perfect for new readers that like horror, fantasy and introduction to the magic side of DC( sandman also fills this niche, which is why I think your list is very well thought through) Regardless of what people’s opinion are for DC directions today, DC’s old content alone is enough to fill shelves.
Hey, Omar. I have got a question. Why DC prints runs only by author and not by...mmm..."story" itself? For example, we have Batman by Paul Dini, PJ Tomasi, Superman by Morrison, Tomasi, ecc... while in Marvel we have this kind of printing but also normal chronological printing like Uncanny X-Men, Amazing Spider-Man, Fantastic Four ecc...? It would be better at some point, because there are omnibus that feels a little bit like axed because of the missing issues, like Dini's one. Or there are outstanding left out like one or two issues during Superman Rebirth run written by Idon'tRemeberWho. I hope you understand my question XD However: excellent choices!
I’m really loving the improved intro and you being visible in a box as you turn through the Omni pages. Side note: anyone else kinda upset how recent marvel event omnis aren’t mapped the best? I usually like main event issues towards the end or at least the middle of an omnibus.
I honestly didn’t like JSA that much. I was confused at times while reading it and I thought some issues were missing. It might just be me though it’s been a while since I read it.
Good list, although i am not sure If they are all for new readers. I agree on Flash, animal man, Gotham Central. Wonder woman and Sandman. Superman only because of the lack of alternatives(maybe death of supie). I would not Take Infinite crisis (Too complex) at all, for Batman the Loeb/Sale book, for JLA the JLI or the 52 book would be Better. I love JSA but i would Take a Green lantern book (Johns book 1 or blackest night). Book 11 To maybe replace crisis, Gotham Central or animal man would be Preacher.

This seems more like your 10 favorite DC books than the best books for new readers. Waid Flash is great, but that's all about Wally West, why would a new reader want to start with him when every version of the Flash in modern media is Barry Allen? Infinite Crisis for a new reader? Do you want them to quit in frustration? Love the Superman by Tomasi choice, that's a great intro to current Superman. Dini Batman is great, but I think Morrison Batman makes more sense as it introduces readers to Damian. My 10 for new readers are: Superman by Tomasi JLA by Morrison Sandman by Gaiman Wonderwoman by Perez (I kept these 4) Teen Titans Volume 2 by Wolfman and Perez Flash by Johns volume 3 (deals with the return of Barry Allen as well as Flashpoint so I think works well enough as an intro to that character) Aquaman by Peter David (Officially announced, so I can count it!) Green Lantern by Johns (really surprised you didn't have a Green Lantern book in here!) Justice League International by Giffen and Demattis (A completely different team from Morrison's and a great intro to a bunch of lesser known characters. Batman by Morrison volume 1
Nope. My top 10 would be so different. This I kept in mind new readers. Some of the books you mentioned were in the original list. Barry Allen’s return is so confusing without the lead up to it. Which is why I went with Waid’s Born To Run. Shows the story of Wally Year One. Morrison’s Batman is amazing, but even as a comic reader of 40 years… that RIP story is a nightmare to navigate through. I came close to JLI. Really close, but I think in the end Morrison’s JLA won over. But I love the Aquaman idea. Just not sure what’s collected in there yet. For the record I knew people getting into comics through the X-men movies and Chuck Austen’s run was nothing like the movies.
Sorry to disagree, but ANYTHING by Grant Morrison is a terrible recommendation for a new comics reader. Their entire schtick is making allusions to comic history.
Excellent choice of DC omnibus books . The Grant Morrison Animals Man and JLA omnibus books are great books to read and also Mark Waid and Geoff John, Flash and JSA omnibus books . All three writers understand the history of DC comics and characters so yeah definitely reccomend put these omnibus books highly for new readers to read. Wonder woman by George Perez that one omnibus books that I would like to get and also Infinite Crisis omnibus book. Excellent 🦸♂️🦹♂️📚👍👍
Throughout that JSA omnibus, I kept forgetting character names and powersets and sometimes even what the villain was trying to accomplish. Felt like it needed more background and narration, it assumes too much pre-knowledge on the part of the reader.
Those characters weren't around for years and some decades. Any pre knowledge really was wiped clean with Crisis. I think the ones that would have benefited the most are probably Jay Garrick in Flash and Sandman Mystery Theater Wesley Dodd.
Maybe it was just me, but I seem to recall the book going for LONG periods of time without ever using a character's name or giving any sort of reminder of their background or powers. There are lots of individual awesome moments in the omni, but I also found it somewhat frustrating. Jim Shooter's "every issue is someone's first issue" rule wasn't in effect. :)
I just picked up Absolute Sandman Vol. 1 yesterday. Thanks a lot for bringing that edition to my attention. After I’m done with Sandman, I’ll go for Absolute Swampthing. Maybe there’s hope for DC yet. I know I’m hard on their publishers, but I’m secretly rooting for them. DC fan for life.
Great list - I have most on my shelf yet to be read but out of that list I have read WW by Perez which is absolutely fantastic and Sandman, which is probably my favourite comic book. I read mostly Marvel stuff recently but I think it's time to get back to some DC books.
@@NearMintCondition I really appreciate you Omar. You’ve given me and my wife one of the best and most enduring hobbies of my life. All our love from London (picked up a BPRD hardcover in a Dublin comic shop!)

Hey the 2018 edition of Infinite Crisis Omnibus is 1400 pages and over 175 bucks. The 2020 version has all the same comics but is only $85 bucks and 1363 pages. Can anyone clarify that for me? Thanks.
Hola Omar.
Muchas gracias.
Fantastic selections. Aside from The Flash and JSA, I've read and own all of these, and they are some of the best DC stories ever published. I dont, however, think Infinite Crisis is that good for a begginner (altough its one of my absolute favorite events), as it deals with concepts and characters that might be challenging for a new reader. I'd replace Infinite Crisis with the Geoff Johns Green Lantern omnis. I'd also replace Gotham Central with either Batman by Loeb/Sale or Hellblazer by Garth Ennis
Thank you so much for the kind words and I really really came close to put Loeb and Sale on here. Hellblazer was in my video from three years ago. Great read.
@@NearMintCondition no, thank you for replying. I'll check out your previous video then to seek out more of your allways awesome recommendations. I also owe you a huge thank you. I'm fairly new in getting back to reading comics after a "absence" of about fifteen years, and your videos were a huge, and I mean, HUGE, help getting started, and to know what to buy. As a collections buyer, your videos were of great value to me in helping me figure out what to buy, in what order, and what were the best editions and options. So huge thank you to you. Keep up the excelent work.
I'm far from a new reader, but have never gotten around to reading the Perez Wonder Woman run. Seeing you page through the art made me go out to my LCS and grab the first volume today! Just ran through the first handful of issues and I am in awe of the artwork.
You don’t have to, but it’s a good idea to. It’s that good of a story that you’ll want to. The first few stories of JSA features Jack as one of the team members.
This was a great help im not new but been out of the game for more than a year just getting back into omnis now so this and the marvel list have been great.
Superman is my favorite hero so I Want the book you go over here. Just wondering, does this have any overlap/double dip issues with Superman Reborn or Doomsday Clock
I just got Crisis on Infinite Earths. Pretty tough read ngl 😆. I have to admit that i started it and then went to Strange Adventures, WW Historia etc. COIE is tough! But im gonna get back to it
Love this video! Been watching your stuff! Always glad to see more content! Still trying to build up my collection to read since I aim to be a comic artist and author one day!
Great video. Thank you. I am Mostly a Marvel reader but have most of these on the to read pile. I also have GL by Johns so hope that is also good for novice DC readers. Really looking forward to Gotham Central & JSA in particular
I like Catwoman as a character but I have always been a fan of Batman and Zatanna marrying. I think they compliment each other well. She's a badass and she cares about Bruce and he cares about her. Plus, she's drop dead gorgeous!😍 Somebody make it happen!
I prefer the Absolute Sandman series. 2 more volumes, but the spines aren't under as much duress and they're also a bit larger and easier to read. I bought the omnibi first to avoid buying the Absolutes but then changed my mind when I saw how overloaded the omnibi are.
Omar do you think you could ask Marvel when Captain Marvel by Kelly Thompson Omnibus Vol. 2 will be out? It was announced for May but wasn’t in the catalog
I bought the Johns Flash Omnibus with the intention to start from that point. And then I heard about the Waid Omnibus and decided to wait for that. Now by the time I bought the Waid Omnibus they’ve announced the Messner-Loeb Omni. At this point I’m just going to wait until all of Flash Of in Omnibus/Deluxe.
I think Dini's Batman is absolutely the best omnibus intro for newcomers to the character. I'd be hesitant to recommend someone like Morrison for example, as I feel his work is more for big fans who have context of the character.
Omar, you should ask DC and Marvel to provide you with a sales comparison from before and after you started this channel. I’m 100% sure that their omnibus sales have gotten better. Love this channel!

Never give up! :)
Great list - I have most on my shelf yet to be read but out of that list I have read WW by Perez which is absolutely fantastic and Sandman, which is probably my favourite comic book. I read mostly Marvel stuff recently but I think it's time to get back to some DC books.
I’m so glad you enjoyed those two. They are among my favorites.
Nice, glad to see this series return!
Hope you enjoy it!
@@NearMintCondition I really appreciate you Omar. You’ve given me and my wife one of the best and most enduring hobbies of my life. All our love from London (picked up a BPRD hardcover in a Dublin comic shop!)
Great video idea.
Thanks! My viewers really come up with the best ideas.
Yes they do. Also, Infinite Crisis was the first Omnibus that I ever completed and it’s one that has stayed with me the most as well.
I'm going to join the chorus of people hoping that we get a Flash by Waid Omnibus V.2 sometime soon. My bookshelf demands it! Great video, Omar! I always enjoy Top 10 lists.
Fingers crossed and thank you for the kind words.
Man, i honestly thought you would recommend Green Lantern by Johns, because THAT, i think, is quintessential reading for New DC readers
I did. The original video. Three years ago :)
@@NearMintCondition yeah, i thought you were gonna run some of them back now. But its still great! Gonna have to do a TOP 10 DC New 52 Omnibus at some point too.
I give the randy marsh to cherry pop tarts to dc but I will support the channel by commenting liking and watching
You are too kind.
Omar with beard > omar without beard 😂
Hahaha I said that about Supes.
Small stories by Paul Dini. Sounds interesting. Might be buy.
It's so solid.
Amazing list bro ! Love when you make videos like this bro ! Gets me excited for DC all over again !
Thank you, brother.
9/10 for me! I guess that means I'm (almost) officially no longer a new reader. Thanks to this channel for Sherpa-ing me through the world of comics
I’m glad to have you here! :)
Thank you
You're welcome
Revenge of the beard. Love it.
Not exactly a newby anymore but damn.... I need so many of these still.
The beard lol it’ll be back.
Planetary!
That was almost on the list.
Great list, Omar! I know that I am NOT a new reader, but The Flash by Mark Waid has been calling to me! Again, thanks for the video!
Thank you my brother. And I hope you enjoy it when you do get it.
Hey the 2018 edition of Infinite Crisis Omnibus is 1400 pages and over 175 bucks. The 2020 version has all the same comics but is only $85 bucks and 1363 pages. Can anyone clarify that for me? Thanks.
It’s the exact page count. DC makes mistakes on their solicits from time to time. And the one in stock is going to be discounted.
@@NearMintCondition thank u!!! Ordering ASAP!!! THANKS FOR ALL U DO.
So many omnibus, so little time/money 😅😂
The art is stunning!
Just ordered JSA Omnibus Vol. 1.
Do you reccomend reading both compendiums of starman first?
You don’t have to, but it’s a good idea to. It’s that good of a story that you’ll want to. The first few stories of JSA features Jack as one of the team members.
@@NearMintCondition Thank you for taking your time to answer❤️
This was a great help im not new but been out of the game for more than a year just getting back into omnis now so this and the marvel list have been great.
Thank you for the kind words/
Superman is my favorite hero so I Want the book you go over here. Just wondering, does this have any overlap/double dip issues with Superman Reborn or Doomsday Clock
It does a little with Reborn as that was a crossover with Action comics.
@@NearMintCondition is it worth selling reborn and just getting the omni
I just got Crisis on Infinite Earths. Pretty tough read ngl 😆. I have to admit that i started it and then went to Strange Adventures, WW Historia etc. COIE is tough! But im gonna get back to it
The pay off is amazing!
@NearMintCondition i meant to reference COIE. Not Infinite crisis (edited now) Sorry haha. But yeah COIE i am still getting through
Your videos helped me out when I first started getting into comics/collected editions! Always great to see videos like these.
That's awesome! Thank you brother.
Love this video! Been watching your stuff! Always glad to see more content! Still trying to build up my collection to read since I aim to be a comic artist and author one day!
Awesome! Thank you and don’t ever give up on your dreams.
@@NearMintCondition welcome and thank you!
Great video. Thank you. I am
Mostly a Marvel reader but have most of these on the to read pile. I also have GL by Johns so hope that is also good for novice DC readers. Really looking forward to Gotham Central & JSA in particular
So what if there's a new reader without the cash for those Omnibuses.
Trades, library and Hoopla is always an option.
I like Catwoman as a character but I have always been a fan of Batman and Zatanna marrying. I think they compliment each other well. She's a badass and she cares about Bruce and he cares about her. Plus, she's drop dead gorgeous!😍
Somebody make it happen!
I prefer the Absolute Sandman series. 2 more volumes, but the spines aren't under as much duress and they're also a bit larger and easier to read. I bought the omnibi first to avoid buying the Absolutes but then changed my mind when I saw how overloaded the omnibi are.
Number one. Custom bound Year Two Omni
Hahaha yes!
Now do Marvel!
Can we get a top 20
I won't buy or read any Superman comic who has a gay son. Just no!
You are going to miss out on so many amazing stories with that mentality.
@@NearMintCondition Not a chance.
Teen Titans by Geoff John's will always be on my list for new readers ❤
Omar do you think you could ask Marvel when Captain Marvel by Kelly Thompson Omnibus Vol. 2 will be out? It was announced for May but wasn’t in the catalog
I asked and not heard back yet.
I bought the Johns Flash Omnibus with the intention to start from that point. And then I heard about the Waid Omnibus and decided to wait for that. Now by the time I bought the Waid Omnibus they’ve announced the Messner-Loeb Omni. At this point I’m just going to wait until all of Flash Of in Omnibus/Deluxe.
lol it’s a waiting game. But the experience will be glorious.
I think Dini's Batman is absolutely the best omnibus intro for newcomers to the character. I'd be hesitant to recommend someone like Morrison for example, as I feel his work is more for big fans who have context of the character.
I love Morrison's Batman, but my goodness it can get deep and heavy and difficult so fast.
Omar, you should ask DC and Marvel to provide you with a sales comparison from before and after you started this channel. I’m 100% sure that their omnibus sales have gotten better. Love this channel!
OH you are are too kind. New Warriors sales went up. :)
This is your best recent video
Thank you.
I think i have all of these minus Sandman and have only read 1(Gotham Central)! Lol.
Time to crack them open. You going to NYCC? I think I’m heading up there.
@@NearMintCondition Chevere Hermano!!! I asked you a few months back and you said probably not on one of ur live streams but yeah I'll be there again on Thursday and Friday.
Another Mintie is going and staying the same days, he's staying at a swanky hotel so maybe we can hit up his hotel, rooftop bar! Or somewhere else, no shortage in NYC!
Me tienes que mandar tu celullar.
This video was very much needed
Thank you so much.
I'd add to the list Green Arrow by Mike Grell, and New Teen Titans by Wolfman and Perez too.
I thought about NTT honestly and it came between that or John's Teen Titans and in the end they both were off the list.
