I saw a sketch on red chalk and was drawn to its warmth oppossed to graphite, and found this video while trying to find out about sketching tools (absolute beginner here) I LOVED this video and the historical background. I am so glad I found your channel
I was looking through my old art supplies and realised I had already bought the giaconda red chalk and the conté 610. After trying them again, I feel like I'm still struggling with the texture of the conté one but the giaconda feels and looks great. I'm definitely going to try them again, now that I feel more comfident in my drawing skills. The main reason why I didn't persevere with that medium was that you can't really erase a bad stroke.
Glad my video prompted you to give them another try, Laurent. Bad strokes don't ruin a drawing. Many old master drawings are full of incorrect lines and corrections. Think of it as allowing your thought process to show through. It will make you less anxious to get every single stroke right, and ultimately lead to less mistakes.

I tried other Red Chalk pencils,like the Lyra Samguine(Oil and dry), the Faber Castell Pitt Pastel and the Derwent Drawing Sanguine. The Lyra have nice colour but are too soft. The Faber Castell works better than the Conte but doesn't have the amount of pigment the Conte has. Derwent has a creamy feel,not bad. I agree with your opinion! Kohinoor(oil) and Conte(dry) are the best.I also love the F.Castell pastel and honorable mention goes to Derwent!

Comprehensive, charming and informative review. I love how you go into the history of the material as well. I have a few queries about the red chalk. Cretacolor and koh inoor manufacture 5.6 mm sticks for lead holders. Koh i Noor has something titled 'sepia russet' is it the same as the pencil?
Thanks for watching! The red chalk in the Cretacolor and Kohinoor sticks are the same as in the pencils. I haven’t used the Sepia Russet in either pencil or stick, but given that the stick and pencil materials are usually the same, it should also be the case with this material.
Thank you for the video……very informative about the differences between conte and red chalk or sanguine…….I love drawing with conte…….recently I collected some red pigment from Sidmouth and ground it up to paint with……deep burnt sienna colour…..I’ve now looked on the map and see that they used to mine red chalk in a similar spot……I shall take a trip and see if I can source some to draw with……..cheers…happy drawing

So would Cretacolor's oily sanguine be the best? I bought Lyra's because I didn't want a smudged sanguine, but it looks like a waxy colored pencil, and it's not very pigmented. I also think its color is a little red, it looks more like chocolate. Great video!!

Loved the video! Red chalk is a considerably unused material and it is hard to find any useful tips about it and not beeing lured into a professional online course. I absolutely fell in love with the medium after getting a book on Michelangelo and I'm currently studying figure drawing with a Derwent Terracota 6400 pencil, and I've bought a Conté kit with the pencil you ranked and some bars. Again, really apreciated the video and thank you very much!
@@at8630 Koh-i-noor offers the Red Chalk in 5.6mm leads! Add their 5340 lead holder and you have the Perfect and most precise sketching/drawing Red chalk pencil on the market!!! PS I use the common M&R metal sharpener,that comes in a small plastic box which also carries 2 extra blades on the bottom part! You need a good common size sharpener like that and you're set for literally endless drawing! I use it very often for years and I'm still on the 1st lead!!
So, I just found this video, and I was wondering whether you'd heard of Pipo's "Authentic Renaissance" Sanguine chalk. It's made by one guy in North Carolina, and I found it much more pleasant to work with than any of the pencils I've bought in my life. Regardless, really appreciate your video, and your pencil drawings on your site are fantastic!
You know, I ran across this product in my research for the video. The story behind it sounds enticing, but I didn’t see any reviews of it anywhere, so I didn’t buy it. It’s certainly not “authentic” since it’s a synthetic product like Conte, and not naturally occurring hematite. I’m a sucker for new materials, however, so I’ll give it a shot, and perhaps make a review.
@@mkompan it's not perfect (and definitely not authentic! ) but I've found it worthwhile. The biggest critique I have is that it is very finicky about paper, and seems to require a certain amount of tooth to make its marks. But I have a strange love for finicky drawing materials, so I enjoy it!

Thanks! Why yes, I have. I think Diamine Terracotta is close match. Montblanc used to make a color (or perhaps it was a limited run) called Red Chalk. I would love to get my hands on some.
@@mkompan I've heard of the Montblanc Red Chalk and I think it was a limited edition, sadly. I haven't tried Diamine Terracotta, but I do have Ancient Copper and Burnt Sienna (both sort of close). The closest I've found (in my short search) is Private Reserve Vampire Red. It's a nice earthy color.
@@dawnholder8819 red chalk came in a variety of colors, so there’s no such thing as an exact match. I also really like deAtramentis dark red. It’s a little on the darker, purplish side, but is still pretty close to some types of red chalk. And it’s waterproof, which allows you to add wash to it.
you can buy natural sanguine from a number of online stores, including Jackson art supply. but It's usually so full of grit tat it's almost unusable for drawing.

Your video makes it seem like Western art was the be all and end all of all art. Was red chalk used in places like India or China or on the African continent? If iron oxide was so common, then they must have had it there, right? What's the story on that?
You make a valid point. I’m committed to inclusivity and diversity, and try to incorporate non-western art-making traditions into my college classes. The difficulty is that much of the basis modern artistic training is heavily Eurocentric and it’s a struggle to find the balance between inclusivity and the need to teach students according to prevailing western standards. Iron oxide pigmentswere the earliest and most common form of reds, browns and yellows, so certainly yes, they were used in paint around the world for thousand of years. The use of red chalk on paper for representational drawing comes down to us from a specific time and place however, and it’s important for developing artists to be aware of this legacy. That said, I will try to include non-western examples in future videos. Thanks for your comment!

I use carbothello 645 and faber-castell pitt pastel 192.
The pitt is harder, better for details etc.
Combining red chalks is a sneaky and effective way to go.

Just looked on Goulet Pens and their swatch of Vampire Red is deeper and more of a cool red than what i actually get. Interesting.
