  • In this demonstration, I will be exploring the ancient Red Chalk drawing technique, which was favored by the masters of the past for their figure studies.
Red Chalk has always held a special place in the toolbox of artists throughout history, renowned for its unique properties that add depth and tonal range to artworks. This medium was particularly cherished by the great masters during the Renaissance period.

I use both the 5.6mm and the Gioconda Red Chalk that Koh-I-Noor makes. It's the closest thing to real Red chalk, while being easier to work with! I wish Conte could improve the recipe on their 610 and 611 Sanguine pencils, because they are the most pigmented pencils I've ever seen, plus their colors are so beautiful! Good job on this using real Red chalk and real handmade paper!! It looks so much better than modern materials!!!

Edit: Koh-I-Noor unfortunately, changed the formula of their Red Chalk. The color is now dark red instead of rusty and the core is softer. I much prefer both the looks and the way their older Red Chalk worked.Maybe it's time to start using Cretacolor Sanguine pencils, it used to be the 2nd best oil Red Chalk pencil and I hope they didn't change anything as Kohinoor did. Conte still makes the best dry Red chalk pencils for those who like to work with dry core. There is always the natural Red Chalk which is not as practical but it is the real stuff!!

Thank you for sharing, Master Borrero. We were missing your videos. It's a pleasure seeing you use traditional materials. Greetings from Germany (Brenda Mexican amateur painter living by the German fields :) ).

Beautiful drawing and technique. Could you please share where you buy the red chalk as I havent found any sources except Kramer pigments but they only seem to have black chalk not the red. Thank you for the wonderful videos.

Thank you for commenting! It's not easy to find this rare material. I bought some small bags of irregular pieces years ago on Etsy.
