  • In this video I demonstrate an unusual technique, combing conte red chalk pencil with wash. I show you three approaches to this technique and show you a few example of how they were used by the old masters.
    Material used in the demo:
    Conte Sanguine pencil
    Wolff's Carbon Pencil 3B
    Escoda Optimo Kolinsky No. 6
Talens Art Creations sketchbook (for sphere demo's)
Art Alternatives Sketchbook (for figure drawings)

Hello Marc, I think I have found what I want to be my niche with large thanks to you and your videos. I am sixty-four and semi-retired. When I was young, I had basic art talent and was good at portrait drawing. I was always a drawer and told myself that I might finally try painting when I retire as I didn’t do much art to speak of in my working years save for some graphic art, poetry, and writing. Well, I tried painting and didn’t like it much, and all the old feelings about why I was a drawer in the first place came back to me.
This isn’t very opened-minded or experimental of me as you would like your students to be, but I just wanted to find that niche, something I was already good at, master it, and create a series of frameable drawings, 11x14, to spend some time on and feel good about. I wanted to draw Indians and other exotic people, mostly. “Indians, Gypsies, and other Tribes People” Well, I think I’ve got it!
I believe I am going to settle on the four Conte chalk pencils that come in a package of six or eight: Noir, Sepia, Sanguin, and white with the addition of your favorite Noor Red Chalk pencil and an Ivory of some kind, yet to be chosen. All this will become my “six color” process on your steel gray paper. How does this sound? I think I will get a lot of mileage from these choices. There may be a little wiggle room to try different brands and papers within this color scheme. I will still probably be asking a few questions. Thanks for your help, Teacher! Jolene.

      Hi Jolene,
How wonderful that you're able to return back to art making!
I don't think there's anything wrong in working in a niche and honing one's craft, especially since there's so much exploration that can be done with just with those limited materials. It's surprising what a difference can be made in order you do things, or how the pencils are sharpened, or the direction you shade. And just one switch in materials can often make a world of difference.
I think working with six color is a great way to go. I have videos where I used pastel pencils on steel grey paper. I you haven't;s ben them, perhaps you might find them interesting.

Marc, red chalk and water were also used to counterproof a drawing in the preparation for a print, or after finishing a drawing to keep a copy in the atelier for reference. Such an Abklatsch could even be reworked by the artist.

@@greekveteran2715 the polychromos is a wax/oil based pencil and is very transparent. Chalk based pencil, such as the Conte is much more opaque and work better on toned paper. That said, for truly strong whites the best option is a color pastel. Rembrandt pastels are relatively inexpensive. Hello Professor, three crayon technique and it's variations are my favorite along with pen and ink. It is amazing to see how to extend those techniques. How useful and inspirational, I love it.
By the way, do you ever use stick chalk crayons? I like to use them for lousy, expressive sketches. Even, there are water soluble ones by Staedtler, this video instantly reminded me of those...

Do you find your red chalk pencil is better than a traditional Conté Crayon? I struggled and eventually gave up trying to control the latter. Similarly I love the look of raw charcoal, but can't deal with the mess.

    • @mkompan
      @mkompan  Рік тому

They’re the same material, just in a different format. My style is linear, so I need my drawing materials to be pointy. Sharpening a stick is wasteful, so I prefer pencils.
Paper is a huge consideration when it comes to control, especially when dealing with chalky materials. If you’re having a hard time controlling raw charcoal (and by raw, I assume you’re talking about vine charcoal), then you can try toothier papers. I find arches cover white is very good for charcoal. It a printmaking paper that’s very toothy, and easy to work with.
