The Star Trek franchise continues with this follow-up to 2009's J.J. Abrams-directed reboot. I like how Kirk hides behind that wall panel because drywall totally stops plasma laser nuclear death rays. Every time.
Well, even if it doesn't fully stop them, you should minimize threat, even if you can't make it zero. If laser hits a wall, it destroys it, but then maybe it's not that deadly as if it hit you directly. In addition, you can probably try to hide and save more time till the air defense arrives. You do what you can.
What else is he supposed to do, stand still in the open?

Hiding behind a part of wall may not protect himself to the fullest extent but it does make it less likely for Khan to see him with bides him time to think of some sort of plan to stop him, even if he doesn't know who was doing it
It was a structural pillar a lot thicker than just a wall panel.

Kirk always was quick on his feet, the first guard ran straight into the room to predictable results, but Kirk was smart enough to get out of there and go for a flank shot. Also, as mentioned elsewhere, maybe not a good idea to hold an emergency meeting of all the most important stafleet officers in an exposed office building.

This movie gets so much hate, but it's actually my favourite of the trilogy, and I think they did a brilliant job of bringing trek to new audiences and a new generation. FYI, tng is my favourite in the series, but do love ent and lower decks also!

@@emperorconstantine1.361 well considering this is the 2260s(roughly) and that was a federation jump ship, its probably a phaser cannon, used just before the introduction of beam phasers on the constitution class.

I always thought it was stupid in the Star Trek prequels how Pike always told Kirk you always break the rules you think the rules don't apply to you. How can he keep saying that when Kirk constantly does his job and tries to save his crew? Even Captain Picard always did the same thing...
Admiral Pike makes it seem like because you are a captain of Starfleet you are not allowed to be a hero you are not allowed to sacrifice yourself for the greater good to protect others. Just like what Kirk told krull in beyond " I was born into doing the right thing and saving people" something like that . whatever he said it was his way of saying he was born to always be a hero just like his father.
After all I always thought that was the reason Pike recruited Kirk because Kirk was so much like his own father.

Why does phaser rifle have recoil...
it's a sort of plasma discharge, like in Star Wars where it's not realy lasers fired from rifles but compressed Tibana gas

@@thomasjuniardi3559 Laser has no mass. Or, no "real" mass. It has energy, thus some mass-equivalent, following E=mc². But well, laser are just focussed photons - light.

If anyone talk about logic. It newton law apply to a force. Laser have energy to move foward. Thus it give back the energy backward aka cause recoil.
