I had a very similar van auto sleeper conversion like that. Only thing that uses to go wrong was the carbs would clog up but an easy spray with carb cleaner of a quick fix
You got lucky. That hitop is great. It makes a warmer van in the cold because you won’t have a canvas tent letting air in. I picked an ‘83 Westfalia in California in March before the Covid was a thing here. Our Prez was ignoring it. It took a knits two weeks at my brothers’ to get an extra battery in, go up on and ditch the fridge and fix the interior lights and turn signals. Then I headed for home 2,000 miles away in Tennessee. I made it to KINGMAN, Arizona before it tossed its fan belt. I had a spare and it wasn’t hard to fit before getting into town. I found a shop that specialized in old VWs and spent two days an not a small bit of change getting the holes in the exhaust welded up, having the valves checked and new plugs and wires installed. From there through snow in Arizona and real drenchers in Kansas and Arkansas I made it home. The skylight leaks, the seatbelts won’t roll up and the kitchen box isn’t secured to the floor. All that will be fixed soon. Enjoy your van. They are great fun to drive if a bit slow.

Enjoy ..... save your pocket money, ours needed a leisure battery this week, always something MOT out this week .
Ha ha great vlog I'm sure once you go through the van it will be fine, hit the bug spray, oil, water, front disks and drums and sort out body work your be fine. From what you said your a hands on chap their is some VW transporter forums if you need them and yes that year was 4 gears but it's a flat 4 engine and is reliable but can overheat. What did you pay for it as I would easily have no issues with taking that van on as parts are cheap for it. It looks like from what you have shown a good old honest VW.
You guys are great....Nath wasn't comfortable under a tarp so everyone suggest a tent and inflatable sleep mat...but oh no Nath has to get a camping van.... don't worry about only having a four speed gearbox you will need four wheel drive a plenty of ground clearance to get it onto the top of High Willhays 😀😎😎😎. Hey, well I used to own one of those, mine was an 88, high roof too. They either had a 4 speed box or a 5 speed dogleg box, I had a 5 speed. 1st was where 3rd normally is and vise versa, same with 2nd and 4th, took a bit of getting used to! Anyway, hopefully you haven't got too many probs hiding away in there, I did think the front end looked pretty good though, mine had some rust around the grill and stuff. The bonus is they are pretty simple to work on. Good luck

It has 5 gears.... 4 forward and 1 reverse. lol. You can buy a bush kit for the gear selector cheap and easy to change. A good choice of bus. Its the last good and easy to fix machine.

Congratulations on the van! Looks in decent nick body wise (must be the Dolly Parton influence). We got a T5 earlier this year and haven't regretted it for a minute. Tents and tarps are staying though 😁 When is the first adventure planned?

Where is the tow rope for the private area you can corden it of on the hard shoulder get the vodka out wave down a couple Russian slow down you don't get covid from 5th gear it's only if you remain in 4th taking it round Europe is dodgy even in photograph format very dodgy but bring that music with you where ever you go it's good to play when you break down 2nd gear

It has 5 gears.... 4 forward and 1 reverse. lol. You can buy a bush kit for the gear selector cheap and easy to change. A good choice of bus. Its the last good and easy to fix machine.

Hello Martin, I am please to say we managed to get back ok with no major issues.. for a bit of work to do now and hopefully in spring we can get out in her for our first adventure..👍

Congratulations on the van! Looks in decent nick body wise (must be the Dolly Parton influence). We got a T5 earlier this year and haven't regretted it for a minute. Tents and tarps are staying though 😁 When is the first adventure planned?

Where is the tow rope for the private area you can corden it of on the hard shoulder get the vodka out wave down a couple Russian slow down you don't get covid from 5th gear it's only if you remain in 4th taking it round Europe is dodgy even in photograph format very dodgy but bring that music with you where ever you go it's good to play when you break down 2nd gear
