Into the Killing Ep 51: Mia Zapata and Kevin Hughes

- In this episode, we discuss the murders of two people who worked in the music business. Adding to the tragedy of the murders is the fact that it took over 10-years for the cases to be solved.
One of the touching things that I recall learning about the Mia Zapata case had to do with Joan Jett and her benefit concert(s). She sold Gits hoodies, with drawstrings removed, and I get emotional just typing those words. What a beautiful, haunting, tribute.
Joan is a Queen, I didn’t know she held a benefit, that is amazing
Yes she did. Joan is amazing, this is part of why she will always be my favorite
Look up Evil Stig on youtube and you can watch the concerts. Totally worth a listen
@@tlb9066 omg thank you for the heads up 😉
@@tlb9066 thank you! You rock.
I'm absolutely sick of hearing about men that get out early, or barely serve time at all for rape, and assault, and get out early, and continue to commit crimes against women, and children. Our government is more worried about drugs, than violent crimes. Makes me sick.
The US constitution is based on the male anyway most from the old world treatment of people like the burning times in Europe however they were towards women.and the Salem witch trials again towards women. I guess we're still inferior when it comes to certain things and some women do get off on good behavior when they needed to been given the death penalty.
It’s because those crimes aren’t considered “violent”. It’s ridiculous.
I can't wrap my mind around him being sentenced to only 36 years for what he did to her. People get more time for non-violent crimes. Then again, the system wasn't designed to protect women.
If you noticed the man in the 2nd case got life. He murdered a man so apparently a higher valued is placed on men's life.
The simple reason for such light sentences is Prison Overcrowding. Years ago, judges were issuing mandates from the bench to grant early releases for whole prisons for "Inhumane Overcrowding", so courts and prosecutors don't want to be put themselves in an embarrassing situation again. America already has a greater percentage of its population in prison than ANY OTHER NATION IN THE WORLD.
Oh thank God! I literally was just scrolling for over 10 minutes through my other crime channels looking for something new when this notification came up. Perfect timing CL! Thank you!
Yes! Things have been a little slow lately on the crime channel scene!
Oh I do the same thing trying to find new content. Plus I’m fussy with the narrators. If it doesn’t sound good I can’t watch it.
That was also me. I have binged them and now have to wait for new ones.
Personally I need to catch up!😹😎✌️
@@bwb5255 I couldn't agree more, I watch at least 10 maybe 12 crime channels and each and every one of them is not pushing out content in the past few months, like they normally do. I will say that the channel '10 to life" is always putting out new content, from old crimes to current crimes. If you don't follow her you should.
The medical examiner was a fan of the grunge scene and identified the body. That's phenomenal. 🤘👍🤘👍
I love your delivery. So relaxing & you always include great extra details.
Thank you for keeping Mia's story alive. I remember the first time i heard about it on unsolved mysteries, and getting the feeling that she would have been huge. Maybe the next Janis or Crissy.
I'm old and still love my grunge and indie, but I am in my 40s and still get in mosh pits. Love it. Why do all the talented people with awesome musical gifts go at 27? From drugs or murder, or suicide its always 27.
Suicides appear not in the news x the imitative effect.. remember, when Kurt died, many fans did it too
@@maramarxx2431 yes yes they did. Its sad that genius like that gets wasted.
Lol, I'm 60 and still get in the pit.
This Friday it's Tech N9ne's ASIN9NE Tour '22 at the Fillmore in Detroit though, not exactly mosh music.
Old at 40 lol. Your not old yet.
I'm 50 with arthritis in my neck from head banging.....most of the bands I love are older than me and still got it.
Metallica 🤟🤟
Mia Zapata is buried in Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, KY. I have many family members also resting there, so one day I'll make a visit to her site too. I wasn't too grunge back in the day, but I knew The Gits would have been big had she lived.
I've seen this story about Mia. It's really sad. She was brutally murdered.
Amen to that.
She was soooo damned talented and what a set of Pipes!
Mia Zapata would’ve been the female version of Kurt Cobain, no doubt about it 🥹
On "Unsolved Mysteries", yes!
Another murder by an illegal alien that wouldn't have happened if they weren't here.
Wow I’m early for once. Mia Zapata’s murder is infamous in the grunge circle. What happened to her was horrible and I’m glad they solved it. Thanks CL

Finally caught a video extra early, You always teach me about cases I've never heard about and elaborate info I haven't heard on the ones I'm familiar. It makes for good study background noise.. and makes me feel like I'm actually learning. Thank you, and RIP to the victims always. 💖

I've been a die hard Mother Love Bone fan since the 80"s r.i.p Andrew Wood, after he died MLB got another singer re -named the band Pearl Jam,Eddie Vedder was the new singer..I heard it worked out great😁❤️‼️🎵🎶
So you're saying Eddie killed Andrew?
@@WorldCupWillie nah they’re just making a joke about the origins of a legendary band
@@WorldCupWillie no, heroin killed the Love Child, Eddie Vedder was kinda stoned back then, just check out his early recorded interviews, LOL. He sure knew how to climb that scaffolding despite being thoroughly "chronically" baked
@@whitneygibson3431 I know about the history of these bands. I was joking.
@@WorldCupWillie glad to hear it, cause I'm sure you're familiar with so many others in comment sections like these who are clueless
Thanks Criminally Listed, I never miss a show 😊 I love true crime lists...
I actually remember Mia being on the news and being old enough to find it upsetting that the P.O.S that violated, abused and then murdered her, got away with it.
So unsatisfied that he got off lightly via death. I hope it hurt him.
Thank you for talking about my favorite kind of music, Grunge always sits in a special place ❤️
Grunge is my favorite style of music too! Which grunge band is your favorite? Mine is Soundgarden while my bf's is Alice in Chains.
I hadn't realized her killer had been caught and convicted!
I hope he rots in hell!
Forensic Files had an episode on Mia, and I never knew that the popular grunge bands raised money toward her investigation
Yeah… I watched the Forensic Files episode on the Mia Zapata case… great to see someone else covering it CL.
I am having flashbacks and all the emotions the good, and the bad with each bandname you are naming off and each album CL. Already loving this episode already.
I remember watching Mia’s case on Unsolved Mysteries, saw a few times because I’m a huge grunge fan so I was very interested. Didn’t recognize second case at first but now I remember from UM as well 😂
Also you’re correct. I was born in the early 90s but if I had a time machine I’d go back to that time the age I am now so I could see all my favorite bands live Nirvana being the biggest one since they’re my all time favorite band 💜 also named my son after Layne Staley. if only….
Same
i heard about mia zapata from the channel let's read. glad to hear that the perpetrator got caught.
Yahhhh my favorite crime hound Rob ❤️🧡💙💜 needed something great to fall asleep to. His voice and my cup of tea. Life is good
Alright another amazing video keep up the great job my friend love your podcast
I'm a huge country music fan and a huge Criminally Listed fan.. put both together makes a great night. Sad cases ...Knowing your killers were finally caught and punished you can now Rest In Peace Kevin and Mia. 😥
1993, I serving in the US Army in South Korea. But yeah I do remember grunge. I also remember an episode of The Simpsons. Where Marge and Homer were young adults in the 90s. And Homer formed a grunge brand.
Thank you for your service.

@@grapeshot I see you on so many of the same channels I watch 😆🇺🇸
@@RaccoonNation yes I do get around.
Oh my gosh I was a teen when Mia went missing. I was a huge grunge fan so I heard about it when other bands were talking about her missing. There was an article in Rolling Stone- I might still have saved it. So so sad- The Gits we’re truly awesome.
She wasn't missing
@@dorothykilgallenwasmurdere1653 Right, I remember now they just didn’t know who it was for a long time.
You right
Hey I know you’re probably not gonna read this, but I dig the podcast. Keep pumping out the good work. Doesn’t go unappreciated.
Why do people still say "robbery gone wrong"? All robberies are wrong for someone.
Seattle early 90's: The music is garbage.
Seattle now: The streets are strewn with garbage.
Mias case has always broken my heart. There was so much talent there.
imagine how many people would still be alive if cops and courts did their jobs and put criminals in prisons
criminally listed coming in with the heat 🔥🔥
I lived about an hour north of Seattle when she was murdered. I moved to downtown Seattle a couple years later. She made such an impact on the music community, she put on a heck of a live show. Her friends created Home Alive and I called them several times as they would walk you home. It probably saved hundreds of lives.
I frickin absolutely loved the grunge era!!! 🎸🎸🎸R.I.P. Mia
Just an FYI: Antioch College is in Yellow Springs, Ohio---not Iowa. That caught my attention because I'm from Ohio and have been to Yellow Springs. As usual, well-done video. Very sad that a couple of talented young people lost their lives to violence.
Yellow Springs is in OHIO! Not Iowa! Spent plenty of time in Yellow Springs and my good friend worked at Antioch. It’s a fabulous, weird, hippy sort of place. You would love visiting there. Lots of art shops there. When I lived in that part of Ohio I was a member of one of the art cooperatives. I also loved hiking in Glen Helen. The Glen is a gorgeous natural area right up next to the town. Plenty of excellent places to eat in the area too.
This Springfielder thanks you for your support.
i remember these cases. they were also featured on that show unsolved mysteries
Thank-you for making my night 🌉
I always click the like button as soon as the video begins. Trusted content always.
Mia was a sweet soul and after she died my mother was upset while living here in Las Vegas!
Good one...do more stories related to music, sports and entertainment world.
Not to say that I personally didn't know this by now, but people walk around Completely Oblivious of their surroundings and especially human beings themselves. You just never know what people are capable of or what they've done. Disgusting and sad but true. Especially at this current period in time 2022!!😳😳😳😳😳😳
So Mia Zapata "asked for it." Do you realize how vile that point of view is? Nobody had the right to do what he did to her.
Best episode yet!
I’m not a huge Nirvana fan…But their MTV Un-plugged set will always be in my top 5…Sooo good. They covered a bunch of different stuff, and it’s fucking killer..Even if you aren’t a “grudge” fan, you gotta give it at least 1 listen.
Grunge* and Exactly ! I wasn’t a “fan” of Nirvana back then lol I preferred Bush and Hip hop/Rap But NO ONE can EVER deny the facts ! Nirvana is and always will be one of the greatest to ever do it 🙌🏻 RIP Kurt ❤️
Unplugged in NY?
I HEARD ABOUT THIS CASE BUT I DIDN'T KNOW HE ACTUALLY DIED NOW, crazzzyyy
Bro, can u make a playlist with these vids? You are my new favorite on UA-cam atm btw! Huge thanks mate!
Btw, “Best Fiends”, such contrast! Haha!
You do an amazing job
Before her death Mia Zapata told her band member she's had I dream being murdered and ending up writing a song called whirlwind a message from her death the first time I listen to her song I got chill how she's dead and being killed by her killer.
Are these actual photographs of the Kevin Hughes shooting?
This is footage from the Unsolved Mysteries segment.
awesome episode, i love grunge and i always wondered why no true crime channels covered this
Forever 27 RIP Mia
Thanks, Robert.
He was exiled to the US from Cuba?
That's a new one on me.
@AloysiusI see. Thank you.
Never miss a show thanks
Native Seattleite right here. My best friend's mother is actually a cousin to Kurt Cobain.
I like this show criminal listed ❤
I lived in Flintstone GA for years. I’m still only a couple small towns over.
Forever falling asleep to your voice/ your videos on queue. 💜
Think he's asleep too
I heard Nashville and had to turn my phone up, it’s rare that my home state is mentioned in one of these 😅
Can you please add episodes 21-51 of these episodes into the Playlist?
Or if Im just an idiot who cant figure out why the Playlist isn't displaying all the episodes, can someone please tell me how I fix it? Thank you!
I know the Mia Zapata one. Thats my homestate. Still disgusted...
Comment a 🎸 if you’re old enough to remember when MTV actually still played music videos!!
Or if you remember Road Rules or Real World ✌🏼
🎸 Lol. I was in high school when
It first started. The Clash and some others is my first recollection.
Oh yes I sure remember it, and the three hosts.. Mark, Nina, and the other Martha I think. I even bought an MTV sweatshirt hoodie back then with the MTV logo.
🎸
Remember reading about this in 2013
Thanks CL❤
Sometimes referred to as "the Seattle sound". That music was my gateway to everything that I love today as far as music goes. Pearl jam specifically. I also loved Alice in chains, Stone Temple pilots, and Nirvana, but Pearl jam was my baby. Absolutely love Eddie vedder. I love the sound of his voice especially in some of their softer songs, and let's not forget to mention how great of a humanitarian is. I love how he got behind and rallied behind the West Memphis 3 situation. That was totally cool because those boys were totally railroaded. If anybody out there reading this isn't familiar with the West Memphis Three case you have got to look it up. I know I'm going totally all subject here but I wood watch a documentary movie called "west of Memphis" first, and any NEWER documentary series on it, then go back and watch the HBO movies that were made called Purgatory: the child murders at Robin Hood hills, Purgatory 2 and Purgatory 3. There was something about knowing the absolute outcome of the case and all the things that were done and then going back and watching over footage of how that we're doing and you can see it fold out in front of your eyes. I don't know it's like I saw a lot more in those movies having seen the outcome. You're like oh that's what they were talking about, that's what they were talking about. But watch it however you want to but just watch it.... Everything you can find on it. Eddie vedder was at the court hearings at the end. These guys were persecuted for the type of music they listen to and the black t-shirts they wore expressing it. They called it "satanic panic".
I believe you've covered both of these cases before.
Thanks CL💔🕊️🤘
2am and youre outside walking with headphones on...
Right, they think they're untouchable.
I was born and raised in Nashville!! I remember when this happened!!
Some of those bands you mentioned I'm a fan of so this certainly grabs my attention.
thnx so much ~
What is is with great musicians and their death at 27 ? Creepy . These all were my bands I miss this wonderful time .
1993 grudge!! Alice in Chains is the best
Kevin Hughes story with the acoustic guitar in the background makes it much more sad
Thanks for the hat tip to the Fisk Jubilee Singers. So many don't know that Black people were involved in Country music that early.
forensic files did mia...sad episode called the day music died..i saw it a couple moths ago
I’m from Tennessee and I can honestly say that if there’s anyway possible for the NPD to screw up a case, they will. Especially back in the early 90s. I graduated high school in 1992 and was living in Nashville at that time. The amount of crime that went completely unnoticed by the local PD was disgusting. These days, most of Nashville’s PD are overweight donuts on 2 feet (I support the police. I’m not a weirdo trying to say ALL cops are bad)
Antioch college is in Yellow Springs Ohio, not Iowa. Ijs 😬

Just disgusting what those people do the folks in the music industry, of that time. It's why, on the road, I carried a derringer, a .45/.410 over/under. "Just in case". RIP.
Finally early 🙌🏾 😌 🖤🤌🏾
This is a sad case and who knows how popular that band could have been but every true crime channel treats this band like they were as famous as the Beatles.
I was into the grunge scene back then living in Chicago and I never heard of this band.
They might have had a small following in Seattle but because of the tragedy surrounding Mia everyone that covers this case acts like they were some huge phenomenon. They werent.
What happened to the background music?
I seen Alice in chains here in Florida in Tampa about 5 years ago badass concert
NO Layne ,
NO A.I.C.
Good story's
😊💖😊 love ur videos. Bed time now 😴 xxx
You tapped into a vast into a huge rabbit hole, I mean so many people have died and has died under suspicious deaths or suicide 🙄😜😜 it's sickening and still people want to be a singer or have a band
Yes! The PROFESSIONAL band members need to disclose full health information, blood tests and mental illness information prior to performing. They are some of THE MOST DANGEROUS PEOPLE ON EARTH. THEY STALK THEIR FANS, VIA REMOTE ACCESS, AND POSE AS OTHER PEOPLE ON SOCIAL MEDIA. (not all) MOST OF THEM ARE DEVIANTS, PEDOPHILES, DRUG ADDICTS, AND ABUSERS. HOW THE HELL ARE THEY SO REVERED??? THIS NEEDS TO STOP. THEY SHOULD NOT BE SO FREE TO DO AS THEY WISH. CANADIAN OFFICIALS NEED TO LOOK AT WHAT THEIR OLD ROCKERS ARE DOING, AND HAVE DONE! TERRIBLE.
🤔🤔I remember the case of kevin hughes he was brutally murdered outside his recording studio as him and his friend were getting into their vehicle by an unknown assailant the suspect was arrested and charged in kevin's murder but died in prison mia zapata from the group the gitts was brutal murdered while walking home I'm glad both cases was solved many years later🤔👍
Mudhoney!!! Besides being in the movie Black Sheep I still have never heard of them or any of their music. Cobane and Layne Staley forever !!!!!
I live in seattle and remember mia z murder. It was crazt
I just wanted to say something about the intro... Temple of the dog split up and Soundgarden and Pearl jam were formed.
I seen in concert and pictures with typo negative I have pictures of Peter Steele and I believe it was Kenneth the other one in downtown Cleveland Ohio
Cool, I got a signed picture with Dime bag Darrell.
his ex should be charged with accessory after the fact (at the very least) for lying for him & keeping that lie to herself for so long.
Nevermind that nevermind isn't actually Nirvana's first album. ..
They in Oklahoma want to go with the suspect in the Girl scout murders even though all the evidence is corrupted due to someone not storing them properly, let me explain they caught people, that are elderly when they were Nazis in their younger days but yet they were convicted and deported and had to stand trial in two places. So how did a case forty something years old just and everything just fall apart someone didn't know how to take care of evidence and in the television report there's no report of the the note that a counselor had found earlier that day or was actually a counselor.
There is an interesting unsolved murder in Flintstone. Man shot in the head in his truck right outside the metal working company he owned. Early in the morning no cameras no witnesses. Rumors he had multiple affairs rumors his wife had multiple affairs so who knows his name was Mike I can’t remember his last name now. Happened in the early 2000’s
