- This is the actual video that was shown in court in front of the judge, Mia's friends and family, and the convicted murderer, Jesus Mesquia. The murderer was sentenced to more than 36 years in prison for the rape and murder of rising punk singer Mia Zapata back on July 07,1993.
Aw that Dad seems so sweet. My heart goes out to him.
I went to see Mia last summer, on her birthday. I travelled from Spain to Louisville only to say HI to her, and tell her how much we miss her. Thank you Mia for everything you gave us. u will be missed forever.
♥️♥️♥️
Did you get to see her?
"She was on loan to me...." I fell apart.
Awww her fathers tribute at the end makes me cry :'(
You can tell how free her spirit was, her voice was powerful. Much like Janis Joplin. Imagine all the music she could have made, how much she could have evolved. Very sad that she died just as they were really starting to blossom.
One of the saddest things is to hear & see a mother or a father talk about one of their children who were murdered or died unexpectedly at a young age. The pain shoots out of their soul like the light from a lighthouse.
Mía Zapata .. I guess we are relatives .. Now you are an angel, a light soul, you will be in the air forever .. Rest in peace lovely girl.. From Rollin Zapata in Canada.
Actually, unsolved mysteries brought me here. I was watching old episodes when Mia's story came on. Its sad she was really talented. She sang with such intensity! She would have definitely been as well known as all those other 90's Seattle bands.
A father's pain...so vivid, so real. I guess it's true we are all out on loan.
This video almost brings me to tears. I'm only 17 and I would have given anything to be alive and witness the true talent of Mia and the Gits. It honestly pains me to watch this video, knowing that such a talent was taken away from us in such a repulsive and heinous way.
Any one who says capital punishment is not humane needs to look at what these animals do to other people any say what if this was my kid or sister or friend and see how these people sit there and smile when they talk about what they did. Our justice system sucks
Liberal Progressives aka Democrats say that. Recognize it..
these murderers are not animals. they are human scum.
thank you for posting this
Me too, everytime I watch this movie and I see her dad talkin' about Mia I feel like cryin'.
She was so beautiful in many ways.
"She now belongs to all of you"
Thank you, we cherisch her.
Her dad just breaks my heart.
sad. and that animal who did it gets 3 meals a day, medical care, workout equipment, snacks, ETC at the taxpayers expense. it sucks.
So Terrible, but He’s Dead Now and Surely Suffering in HELL
Mia, you are missed so much. Every time I see or hear your dad talk about you I cry. I can't believe it's been almost 15 years since you were taken from us.
If you can make through the story of Mia Zapatas life without breaking down and crying you have no soul..... she was on her way to being a superstar
the last words of the father bring tears to my eyes..
Like a friend of mine said to me when I lost a close friend last year:
@It is always hard to find the right words when one encounters death, and espececially the death of the young."
But to loose someone to such dire circumstance, I cant even begin to Imagine.
Peace to her friends and family.
Just found about Mia, sadness to the bone. Cruel twist of fate!
I just saw the actual feature length documentary on Netflix. Wow, this was a great, well done film with such a tragic story. This is a must see documentary!!!
What the name of the documentary?
She reminds me of Janice Joplin, and it's so sad to see her young life end at the hands of a monster. We love you MIA!
Janis
very sad documentary about mia Zapata...we still terribly miss her...she will always b my number one artist in life.i have a soft spot In my heart for her..rip Mia
...a person who is looking at the daunting task of both starting a new career path at almost 40 yrs. old but also a person who has a huge passion fordocumentary film in particular. Again,knockout68, I wants to congratulate you on making an incredible film. I absolutely loved it. Viva Zapata!
I love what his dad says in the end "she now belongs to all of you and it's neat, I like it, I'm proud of her". This is so tragic...I'll call my daughter Mia.
I fist learnt about the Gits from the Hype, documentary on Seattle bands (though I kind of knew about them because of Home Alive). When I saw the part when they do Bob (cousin o') I thought "Who is this woman?" and got really intrigued and listened and sure enough! She just moves you with her voice, UNBELIEVABLE!
That one guy sounded more sad that the band fell apart because of her death. I kinda understand cause it fucked up His dream but Damn, it isn't as sad as losing a friend.
R.I.P Mia Zapata. I am so happy that I can see this amazingly wonderful film that shows her life, not the same thing that we all have seen. She is very loved, gone but not forgotten.
Dad seems like such a sweet sweet soul, I guess he would have to be to raise such a gem of a talented Bluesy, Janis Joplin sweetheart of a daughter...my prayers go out to you Dad and the rest of your family 💔
Rest in peace sweet girl...I found out about and your band and your ferocious voice through Everybody Loves Our Town as well as some other phenomenal bands but I have to say your voice stands out the most...
Bit late to the party but I guess am a Git gal now ✊🏻
Mia would have been a huge star. She was the real deal.
this video brings tears to my eyes. what an amazing documentry
God bless you Mia. I only discovered you by chance today.
@knockout68 Hey Knockout I wanted to first applaud you on the excellent film you have created here. I just recently saw and think it was absolutely amazing. I was 21 when this tragedy occured and was both a Gits and 7 year bitch fan. Your use of imagry and intersing juxtaposition of current and archival images was excellent. I'm 38 now and have returned to college after a winning a 12 year battle with drug and alcohol dependence and I am studying filmmaking. What advice if any do you have for..
she was a female version of Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley...very sad and still very relevant and missed to this day..we will never forget u Mia...ur in my heart. .
Agree and disagree! Mia was a great singer, just like Layne and Kurt were. It just so happens she's a woman; not the female version of anyone else, except herself.
Not fair at all, Risk Records. I agree, she shouldn't be called a "version" of them (although she definetly falls into the same category), but calling those guys losers is utterly disrespectful to what they have accomplished and what they were capable of
RIP Mia Zapata such a great soul! awesome voice.
Do you happen to have the full version of that acoustic "Cut My Skin"?
I love the mellow version of "Cut my skin makes me human" at the end, anyone know where I could buy it online? Thanks!
its so sad, the dad seems really nice too
Can somebody tell me the name of the last song of this video?
Thank you!
Even better than Janis possibly?... I hope there is a place that souls can rest, 'cause people like Mia deserve it.
je suis très touchée par ce documentaire .... Son père surtout ... c"est poignant ! merci
I watched this video for the xth time. It keeps on bringing tears to my eyes.
And it keeps Mia alive.
I am very lucky to have caught these guys twice back in the day, very lucky indeed.
As a whole they were an amazing band, the world was robbed of an amazing talent and a beautiful human being.........
We live in a world with so much beauty and love but also so much evil.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MIA!!! I'm so sorry her life had to end the way it did...It's just so tragic! My love to her family and friends, always!
saw her on TV first(some crime show) and I had to find out more about her - Being a drummer and knowing talent when I see it, her voice just blows me away.
Very Sad.
R I P Mia
Just stumbled upon this video. Man, I still miss her and think about her a lot. The end of our innocence wasn't it?
Okay… I’m SOBBING. 😭 She was so incredibly special. I’m so glad that not only did they catch her murderer thanks to the intuitive ME that also happened to be a fan that swabbed that bite mark, but the fact he died in prison ridding the world of him. RIP Mia.
SOO right. No one deserves this especially not mia. what pisses me off is the murder didnt speak english and had this translated to him .. i want him to feel horrible and the raw emotion.
Shit the father made me cry. Rest in peace Mia.
I didn't know Mia nor ever saw them live but I am crying now. Such a beautiful spirit taken to soon. Life is not right
The most inspiring vocalist of our generation hands down. What a loss.
What a beautiful tribute she was on the brink of a music revolution with her own style I fell in love with the band first song I ever heard in fact I borrowed the cd from my friend and we fought cuz I never gave it back to him and I ended up losing it back in 99 and that was it R I total oeace Mia love
The case of Mia is currently being analyzed on German television.
This poor girl.
RIP🕯️🙏🏼
You'll never be forgotten angel 💕
I never saw this band but I knew a lot of people who were impacted by her loss. I volunteered for the benefit event in San Francisco at Cyclone Warehouse and shortly thereafter started putting on all ages shows in Palo Alto. I've been doing that for 27 years. Maybe there could be a grant at Antioch College for people who want to put out their own music, in her memory.
so sad :(
so very sad
mia you are missed so much.
May she rest in peace sweet sweet angel ❤
5:15....She was a Painter. That aspect of her art puts her among the other two great artist's taken by cruelty. Frederick Bazille. And Franz Marc. When you dip youre paint brush think of all of the lost consumed by hate and savagery.
Very sad watching this short video. An innocent life simply shortened just like that.
I’m am SO SO happy Mia, her family and friends got -justice! ❤
tha song on 2:40 ????
please reply :)
Heaven has another angel....THE GITS FOREVER!!
Superbe hommage
RIP, Mia Zapata
mia...you are sooo missed.
She seemed like someone who knows pain all too well and therefore wouldn't want anyone to feel that emotion..
Where's the murder sentencing part at?
Where's the trial?
Exactly. Before even hearing the Joplin comparison, I thought Janis Joplin too.
I just found out about her today, from watching FACES OF THE FORGOTTEN. She kind of reminds me of Pat Benatar. She was good. Tragic shame what happened to that poor girl.
I thought "27 club", through no fault of her own. Sad. The father, sad, sad feeling listening to him speak of her.
Could you maybe upload it here, or PM it to me? I would love you forever.
Thinking about how sad it is that I first heard of her from the flyers all over Capitol Hill after she was murdered. I think I remember seeing them in the U District too, near that Brutalist administration building across the street from the Henry gallery.
Why would someone end the life of such a person as that? It's just...not right.
I missed The Gits the first time around - here in the UK we only got Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, et al. Discovered them on Grooveshark and I did a search for Mia and at first I thought she was part of the cursed 27 club. When I read she was murdered in such a horrible way it was like a punch in the stomach and I never knew her. Reminded me of Adrienne Shelly, another amazing person taken by a scumbag. Such a terrible, fucking shame.
Such a shame.
Really sad Mia Zapata died here is person hole life head of here she killed. When Mia Zapata died music band stop. She was full of life and pretty it broke people heart it did.
viva Zapata. Love you always and forever soul sister. too good for this world. xox
@crashedupderby no the killer was cuban and mia is mexican american so dont talk shit R.I.P MIA ZAPATA REST IN PEACE ANGEL
Don't care what anyone thinks Mia was the female version of kurdt
Mia Rest in piece
I hope her dad is still alive. He is a gem.
rock in peace
What a cool girl, repping her hometown with her t-shirt. People can be so terrible.
There was a bunch of us in Seattle from the Midwest so we rooted for .& supported them with everything we had.
💜
Sooo... Was this click bait?? Where's the part about her horrible murderer?!?! Rest In Peace Mia... 🙏🏻💙
WHO WAS THE LAST PERSON TO SEE HER ALIVE ?
Hey on November 10th on SPIKE Unsolved Mysteries there will be a story on Mia's death
@orrorvacui1 Hearts, lady.
@allmusicalldayx3 ME if it's not late! :( I only discovered this person like a month ago!
rip mia
Just introduced my girlfriend's daughter to her music. She's ten :)
yeah, im pretty sure it has nothing to do with the murder, and if you cant 'read' the point, then im sorry, but i cant exactly draw it for you. this has turned into a big waste of time, seeing as we are both obviously talking to yourselves, two different languages, so i wish you all the best. and bid you farewell. ; )
Is she ok?!?
Я ПОМНЮ ТЕБЯ
ПОКОЙСЯ С МИРОМ ДОРОГАЯ 🙏
The Queen of Table Waters shall always reign...
whats your obsession with 'mommie's basements'? lol
LOVE SAVE WORLD
R.I.P - Z Polski.
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
We can do without a lot of the people that DO NOT make up punk's core demographic.
you do not own Mia's memory. shut up.
Another member of the 27 club.
That's what I thought too, but unfortunately have never heard of her til now.
The 27 club is primarily comprised of artists who died via their own self destructive tendencies. Mia was murdered.
@@shawnrekiel7186 "primarily"? What does that mean?
From what I know, the 27 club includes any artist who died at 27, I don't think there are no other "rules" than that ...
*I get your point tho, most of them did died "via their own self destructive tendencies" but I'm not sure about that being "a "rule" to be in the club
In my opinion, if you're popular then die at 27 no matter how, you're in!
*Robert Johnson is the best exemple of that, he's in the club althought no one know how he actually died
Shawn Rekiel 27 club. Died at that age but most likely music industry sacrifices
Getting murdered is a hellova way to get into the "27" club. A crying shame.
Did they get signed? Why do we have to keep making the case she was the greatest artist and they were the biggest band….? Sad story.
Why don’t we say people came out in droves when she died? The revision history that they were huge is false. I am old enough to remember. You do a disservice when you try this angle.
So sorry what a tragedy ..
They were packing shows down the coast & had labels starting to make offers.
And they’re all super talented & would have continued to refine their sound & at that period of time, they would have been huge.
