About This Video:
In this video Joseph J. Allen, O.D., F.A.A.O., explains glaucoma and what causes glaucoma. If you have ever been diagnosed with open angle glaucoma and wanted to know what causes glaucoma, then check out this video. This video reviews the basics of primary open angle glaucoma and high eye pressure. I also review glaucoma symptoms such as visual field loss and glaucoma treatments. However, as mentioned in the video, not all types of glaucoma have problems with eye pressure and we call that normal tension glaucoma. I also go over who is at risk for glaucoma, but it's important to note that anyone can get this eye disease, even children. Children can even be born with glaucoma and we call that congenital glaucoma. I then review how you can prevent glaucoma by visiting your eye doctor regularly, as this eye disease can often be caught early and treated to delay vision loss.

I would like to know the long term side effect of straight bleach in my eyes one eye was washed our at the hospital and it had severe burns to the whole front of my eye blurred vision aswell the other eye i didn't know it had a little bleach and see it didn't get washed out and now i see a little tiny dot in the front of my pupil and see blurry vision on the edges of what ever i am looking at in both eyes also it happend on the 26 th of december i attended the hospital in the ambulance and had to go back every few days to see a dr not a eye dr . My vision went blurry as soon as the bleach hit my eye . Thanks From Natalie in Australia
Hey Natalie, Really sorry to hear about what happened. It is best for you to continue following your doctors treatment plan and continue with your regularly scheduled visits. And if you have another emergency, seek emergency services.
In general, any toxic or chemical damage to the eye can result in corneal scarring and even death of the corneal limbal stem cells (which are needed for the cornea to grow and stay healthy). But with acute and proper treatment, hopefully corneal scarring and permanent damage can be minimized.
I hope everything turns out alright for you.
@@DoctorEyeHealth Thank you for your answer im just a bit scared of having vision problems in the future and im going overseas to America soon and dont want to have any eye issues when im away and can't find much about long term side effects or much about bleach that doesn't get rinsed out as it was not picked up to 2 days after the bad eye was rinsed out sorry to bother you again Natalie

This video was extremely helpful in explaining glaucoma. For me it's genetic and out of everyone in my family who got it mine is the worst. I didn't know that you could get it as a child. I wish I had of known this. I wasn't diagnosed until I was 30. That was 33 years ago. I have extreme advanced glaucoma. Years of lasers, eye drops and implants to get the pressures down has only slowed down my vision loss. The doctor said I probably have a couple of years left of vision. I’ve been diagnosed with Glaucoma since the age of 1, I never truly understood it until I was 16 and I still kind of don’t. I’ve always felt insecure about it and tried to live my day to day life as a “normal sighted” person. I’ve had 3 surgeries to help combat it and just recently had my Ahmed valve implant repositioned to help with the pressure again. Come to terms that it’s just a part of who I am and hopefully can begin to understand and embrace this gift I have
Thank you for your straight-forward, calming explanation! My eye doctor has been 'watching me' for the possible development of Glaucoma for 3 or more years now--I see her every 6 months. She noticed 'something' a number of years ago, and yesterday, she put me on eye drops. I am in the early stages, and I am thankful for her, and all of the doctors out there (you included) that are diligent with patient care.

Great video! I was diagnosed with glaucoma 10 years ago, never given the type. My pressures never went above 18 but the optic nerve kept decreasing in function so I was referred to a different doctor who diagnosed normal tension glaucoma and operated recently--cataract surgery and four different glaucoma surgeries, on both eyes, same session, 7 hours. This was an unprecedented operation and was wildly successful; my pressure is down to 11 and 12, my vision is corrected to 20/20 from 20/950 and I no longer need bifocals at all. And done with regular replacement lenses.
This video helps me understand my glaucoma and how to help keep my eyes healthy after this major surgery. I am grateful for the timeliness and precision of Dr. Allen's work, and also for the sweet, lovely feline presence of Zelda.

@Sarah Sarah How is it now?
@Sarah Sarah wonderful
This video will help me explain glaucoma to my husband and in-laws. I've had open-angle glaucoma all my life, but have a lot of trouble articulating how it works.
I was diagnosed with glaucoma at 1-month-old. It developed after my IOL was removed due to congenital cataracts. I have been taking multiple eye drops every day and have had 8 eye surgeries including shunts and laser. Though my pressure runs mostly in the normal range, my vision has steadily decreased over the years. I am now 28. I am using assistive technology to type this right now. The doctor estimates I will lose useful sight within 10 years. I appreciate how you noted that glaucoma can appear at any age. Whenever I tell someone I have glaucoma, its always like "Oh my great-aunt has that", and they think it means my vision is a little weak. But growing up with it is a totally different experience. Gradual vision loss has shaped the way I live, think, and plan for the future.

Hey Thanks for watching! Zelda says hi back (she is being lazy today...just like every day)
I was diagnosed with higher than normal pressure when I was 25, (taken with the less exact puff ball test, 26/27) I had years of visual fields, dilations, etc. with no damage noted. Anyway I mentioned this to my cataract surgeon, and he suggested a procedure, which brought my pressures down from 20 (both eyes) to 15, so surgery can be an option for some patients, I don't need drops.

Hello, my name is Rafael Sanchez and I am 23 years old. I’ve experienced the symptoms that you talked about in this video for almost 3 years now. What are the best eye drops in your opinion to help with the optic nerve? I’ve seen doctors but since I don’t have good insurance I feel like they just kinda give me bs answers. @@lilyai4062fellow 3rd world country here, I am 18 and I've found a guy on tiktok that warns about getting blind at young age because of glaucoma, I didn't care at first but this guy just keeps appearing on my fyp, past few weeks I started feeling pressure on my left eye, I'm scared cuz when I google it the symptoms are similar to glaucoma, I told my parents to get me see an eye doctor but they just ignored me, 1 month passed and I keep begging my parents to get me checked by an eye doctor and finally I got checked, turns out my eye pressure was high (21), the doctor said it should be around 18 and I'm currently on 2 eye drops and 2 pills. I also had anxiety and gerd so it's kinda hard. Hope you're doing fine!
Thanks for your videos , I wished my eye doctor would of explained it like you.
Excellent explanation easy to understand. Zelda improves scenery.
My glaucoma is trauma induced. I had multiple surgeries for other eye issues (starting at age 18) and they weakened my optic nerves. Glaucoma is, by far, the worst disease in comparison to other eye issues I've had (i.e. cataracts and retinal detachment & holes. That's because the drops dry out my eyes like the bowels of Mordor and cause corneal erosions with me and they are awful. Literally no treatment for dry eye or erosions have ever worked. I'm dependent on contact lenses all the time now to protect the cornea.
Thank you so much for information Doc! I been diagnosed with glaucoma and using eyedrop since nov. 5 2019 my eye preasure 18 both eyes latanoprost
I had a eye appointment for glasses & after the eye Dr perform an eye exam on me He told me that i might have glaucoma on my left eye,He schedule me another appointment on Thursdays,Do you think if I end up having glaucoma He has to tell me the pressure level of my eyes?
@@pdswrld5200 how was it?
This video was very helpful….thank you
The explanation was useful thank u so much and your eyes are so beautiful DR.😍
I have glaucoma. I am 45 and was diagnosed about 2-3 years ago. This video was very helpful! I have vision loss in my left eye by my nose. The drops are helping but the doctor is evaluating me for surgery. My grandmother also had glaucoma and vision loss in the left eye. Zelda is so cute! I also have a cat who loves to seek attention when I am on the computer. 😀🐈
Hey thanks for watching CJ. Glad to hear your doctor is watching you so carefully. Whats your cat's name?
Evaluating you for surgery to restore your vision back to normal?

Thanks Rod for the Support! Any other eyecare topics I can cover for you?

Thanks Doctor for ur honesty about glaucoma.
never been diagnosed, but I have been going to my ophthalmologist more to test for it.
🙏🏿
5:45 when he said that I started looking around to see if my side vision was fading, and I got really scared cause I saw a little arc when I looked up. I quickly realized that was just my eyelid though
Great explanation, thank you.
I am being evaled for glaucoma. routine eye exam and they asked about family history. Due to spotting a change in the optic nerve im going to a specialist.
Im a bit apprehensive about it, but very grateful for quality eye care. As of now I see perfectly fine, no issues besides minor nearsightedness which i only need to drive.
If it is glaucoma or another similar issue it is caught super early and we are ahead of treatment for it before i even noticed loss of vision.
I was diagnosed with glaucoma several years ago and have been treating it with latanoprost. It's been effective so far.
Latanoprost is great. very effective. Any problems with side effects?
@@DoctorEyeHealth After about 1 year there was a slight increase in length of my eyelashes. I have blue eyes and there's been no change in pigmentation.
Thats great! My mother loves that her lashes are longer...but I dont think she has seen a color change either.

THE BEST EYE DOCTOR
I have it! Great helpful video. Thx so much.
Yup. Went to eye doctor today. He has been watching cupping in both eyes for a few years. He has checked my peripheral vision and it was good until the test today. He found a minor problem in my left eye. Starting on drops tonight. He said the drops can delay serious problems a number of years (hopefully longer than my life span). Thank you for the video!
Yes l do have this condition l have two Sergey done already but lm glad is anther control now is good thw you talk about this condition a can help someone thwy don't know about this condition
How's your vision, and are you getting a normal amount of tears?
Excellent explanation 🙏
Love Zelda . Thank you for this great info video 👍
I was born with Retinoblastoma 41 years ago. I had twice the amount of radiation recommended for patients at that time to kill the tumors. I lost my Left Eye entirely. But for 40 years, I had acceptable vision, even after 73 surgeries when I was a baby under 3 years old. Now,one year ago, my vision in my Right Eye has decided to break. I've seen 3 eye doctors, 2 neurologists, and had 2 MRIs. All they've told me is my optic nerve has atrophied. For the past year, all I see now is bright blinding lights, orange, yellow, red, nothing but bright neon light, all day, with my eyes open, or closed, it's always there. I'm suffering, I'm being tortured every day and nobody is helping me. I've been told 'it is like Glaucoma' but it does not sound like it to me. I think I can see the back of my eye. I can see a cup-like shape that is surrounded by white static circles, and has a yellow dog in the middle with red glowing shafts around it. it almost looks like an umbrella shape. It is always there, all the time. I'm on blood pressure medication now to lower it, since when the lights started last year they found my BP at 180/120. My BP has been low for a year now though, and the lights, the cup-shape thing, and everything is still there. I don't know what to do. I've seen so many strange things, especially when waking up at night. I can see my hands and arms covered in a yellow mis, and if I wave them around in front of my face it leaves streaks of yellow static in my eye. I can wave them around behind solid objects, like a door, and see them through the door. This is pure misery and I'm getting no help what so ever.
I wrote this using a Screen Reader...
I am honored and blessed that you took the time to share this. Vision loss can be tragic. I wish there was more I could do for you but I am grateful that you have had access to so many skilled doctors. I am also thankful that your blood pressure is under better control. It means a lot to hear from people and that you have found the channel. I hope my videos help you in some way. Many wishes.
@@DoctorEyeHealth They are informative. I just wish I had a docdtor who'd talk to me more. My current doctor doesn't stay in the room for more than 2 minutes before he is on his way out and telling me to come back in six months.
It's all just so disheartening.
But yes, your videos are informative and well put together. So thanks for that and the kind words.
I'm no doctor. My grandmother, mom, uncle, cousins have Glaucoma and I'm extremely myopic and have began seeing vision changes 2 yr as ago my peripheral vison looks pink and yellow on sunlight. Every time I tell Dr's. (I've seen several in my area) they usually never diagnose me with anything... mom just had shunt surgery 2 days ago,I began to do more research. Glaucoma is disease of poor blood flow. I've decided to take to gym to improve my blood flow to retina and nerve area. I don't know if this can help you. I know you haven't been officially diagnose either.
Best wishes 💗
@@Lindamorena Sadly it's too late for me. My optic nerve has atrophied, and there's no coming back from that. I do ride a fan bike every day for 30 to 45 minutes, and I take Manuka Honey Eye Drops which 'may' help with blood flow also, but ultimately I fully rely on a Screen Reader to do this stuff now. And I just go from dark days to pure bright light stuck in my eye. Flashing, so bright, like the static on a dead tv channel, with my eyes open or closed. Radiation always wins.
Keep doing research on your situation, though, there are ways to prevent glaucoma if you get out ahead of it.
My case is just a unique one, where the extreme radiation I got as a kid has given me something that maybe nobody else in the world is going through. And it's horrible, more than I can explain with words.
Questions; is elevated eye pressure a symptom or a cause of glaucoma? If pressure is only a symptom, then why the focus and emphasis on treating only the symptom? Is there such a thing as below "normal" eye pressure and can someone with such also develop glaucoma? Thank you in advance for your time and reply !
Thanks for all the info much appreciated
Great advice as usual.Thank you Dr
So nice of you Thanks
