I appreciate your lighting and color grading in your videos so much. I’m so over the multi-colored dance club lighting aesthetic of a lot of UA-cam videos these days. Your lighting is exactly what it’s supposed to be, highlighting the important bits. Well done!
Love it. Your candor, insights, thought processes and humor are all valuable and entertaining. Your interest in the filmmaking/visual aspect of YT also definitely shows! For whatever it is worth, your channel has become one of the few that each video is a "must watch" for me. It's kind of fun that I still have some past videos of yours left to catch up on!
pro tip: get a soft bristle paint brush (same size you would use for painting a fence by hand) it will help with dust on; pedals, surfaces, cables, synths, midi keyboards, comp keyboards etc... it is really a game changer. edit: also love the feel of your work station nice lighting, your video looks great, composition, lighting all inviting and done well.
Great seeing your space in more detail Jon. You are right about how much gear you need. Some folks are happy with a laptop, cans and midi keys, others needs more instruments and outboard. It's a personal thing. The studio is part of the composer these days with so many of us working in our own spaces.
3:32 "Books that I have read anywhere from 10-35% of..." 😂😂 SO me! And the look at 7:16 was PRICELESSLY funny! Love it all. I've only seen a couple of your videos so far, but I'm definitely subscribing now and will dig in more in the near future. Thanks!
Hi Jon, great video as always. I replaced my nanokontrol a few months ago with a great little unit from a UK company called Anne's Tweed. Its their Custom Midi Controller - 3 faders (which are thankfully much longer than the korg) and its well-built. Also has rubber feet that actually work - so it doesn't move around when using it. Was about £50 I think.
Great fun to watch. A lot of moment maar I could identify, not using stuff anymore, DIY projects that never seems to be the time/energy for to finish, always looking how to improve the place you work at.instruments and effects that are waiting to be used again. Hahaha just focus on the things that you do😁😉 not on what you’re not doing and stay happy funny and make music🤟🏻
This kind of video is really insightful and generous and great. The amount of dust is both alarming, and assuring, because it seems like dust doesn't exist in UA-cam music studios... I'm sure your wife is right, but I kinda like that lamp.
Glad to see you worked your way in to my UA-cam algorithm. I am just a hobbist, but I am currently looking to make some music sound complete, professional, and all that entails. It is a learning journey and I am enjoying the progress. Thanks
Nice set up. Thank you for taking the time to take us through it. I was on Google last night, trying to find an adapter that would allow me to put my standard SM57 microphone clip onto a camera stand/tripod. Such a simple adapter, but do you think you can find one anywhere? They don’t seem to exist. I’ll see if one of my friends can turn one one a lathe.
Love the realism, but this space would drive me crazy. Anything I don't use ALL the time has to go and things have to be clean/decluttered. I'd cash out any unused or barely used gear, then roll that into something special. Outside of that I dig the "cozy" aesthetic...
Nice KITT!!! Now it just needs to talk: "Hello, Michae... I mean Jon." 😅 I have the same Radial DI Box. It still needs to be hooked up. I have the NanoKontrol2. Lately, since I'm into modular, I got a Michigan SynthWorks XVI Desktop Fader Bank. It's very nice for CV and MIDI.
Hey Jon just found your channel. As I’m on my own musical journey I see a lot of content here I’m going to enjoy. glad to be along for your journey too
First time coming across your channel and I’m impressed. I work in production sound for TV/film and I’ve often had the thought that if 10% of our music brethren new about the grip gear we have for mounts it’d revolutionize studio micing accessories. Subscribed!
Hey Jon... I see that you're thinking about another monitor controller... look at one of these three. 1) Dangerous Music monitor controller, 2) Crane Song monitor controller, and 3) Crookwood monitor controller. Of the three, I believe that the DM is the least expensive, but still somewhere in the $1500 to $2000 range, with the Crane Song more than likely coming in at second highest cost, and more than likely the Crookwood will be the highest, but also probably the most hi-fi. It's used in mastering houses all over... made in Britain by a really great guy who once worked for Focusrite as a console designer. Loved the video... thanks so much!
Please discuss "sound proofing" and "acoustic treatment" of your two rooms. We each have different gear but we all need the room to sound better when mics are picking up whatever is happening.
So cool! My wife and I are house hunting right now. Looking forward to getting out of our NYC apt, and creating a space like this of my own😊 I’m actually in the market for a headphone amp right now. What made you go with the Little Lavs over something like the Rupert Neve RNHP?
Thank for the to studio-tour! Looks like a great space to create, and that's what's most important! Question: The UAD FW via TB STILL works? I thought Apple discontinued support for FW in Monterey, but I guess it still works? Or, are you using some mojo to get everything to tick? I have a Mac Studio and some old great FW gear that's still great... except it's FW.
Faderport recomendations: I have been using an icon Platform M+ for a few years now and I'm really happy with it. Nine faders and a neutral optic that fits in every type of studio. FVDE by Audio Imperia, I don't own one, but know a few people that do, and they are all very happy with it. It has four faders and is cased in a wooden shell wich probably would look pretty nice on your desk. The Presonus Faderport 8 is also a solid piece of hardware from what I have heard, but it might be a bit too chunky for your more clean and minimalistic setup.
Great tour! I have a question regarding power. In my space I use one of the ‘power strip’ style furman power conditioners. Do you use anything specific to cut down on noise/hum?
very generous walk through. thanks. have you got a formula for determining when it's time to unload a piece of kit? i've got so many regrets about pieces i wish i still had...
There's not much with the same format as the Korg nanoKontrol. Somethings you could switch to with multiple faders in a similar format are the Studilogic SL Mixface or Softube Console 1. Other than those, you would have to go with a larger footprint controller like the SSL UF8, Avid S1, Icon QCon, etc.
Wow, I feel better about avoiding reorganizing my rack and making my patchbay less of a mess, the cords and wires are mostly hidden but I can still feel their presence, I always say I am going set it up the way I want it, then I look at it, think about it, and my knees get weak. Next time I am going to dive right into it.....promise
I love your drawers. Nicely labelled but full of cr*p - just like mine, except I don’t even have labels - but I know (mostly) where to look to find stuff.
At one point you’re talking about organizing and you mentioned that you were a fan of someone but I couldn’t make out who you were speaking about. Who is it?
Misleading video title. This was really just a studio tour, and you didn't talk about how your workflow is streamlined. It should really just be called "Studio Tour 2023".
Your channel is criminally underrated. Instead of filing charges, I am just going to subscribe for now.
I appreciate your lighting and color grading in your videos so much. I’m so over the multi-colored dance club lighting aesthetic of a lot of UA-cam videos these days. Your lighting is exactly what it’s supposed to be, highlighting the important bits. Well done!
THE DANCE BREAK 🤣🤣🤣
also I am 100% stealing that velcro charging station idea, that's great

same!
This is an outrageously beautiful space, Jon. I've loved watching it evolve over the years. Now then... what's Soft Drums Part 2 👀
Hmmm…super good it is…👀
Love your space. Thanks for sharing
Oh dang I laughed so much here. Thank you! Biggest takeaway: you built that desk. Super nice work and meaningful.
Nice!

That's a great tip. Thanks!
Yea I need a good brush
I love the little skit shots running around and b-roll shots. Too funny! Great content as well.
You really keep it real, I'm a fan
This is a real man’s studio!!!! U know he makes real music that you can feel..
Cameos by doggo and kiddo elevates this one for Oscar contention.
Jeff Tweedy!! I'm reading that book right now
Yayyyyy, a studio story I can relate to!
Now we gotta see your wood shop !
🤣 The honesty in this video was incredible.

And the PEAK (or SUMMIT) is a DREAMBOAT.
Inspirational
New subscriber! Great content and absolutely beautiful lighting and colours
Great video! +1 for the pomodoro method
Great Video and tour!

Great insights Jon 💜 also the house in general looks lovely 😊
Thanks so much! 😊

I like how you keep it real, not trying to hide that you don't use things, etc.
P.S. I hate patch bays, just buy ADAT expansion.
Glad to see you worked your way in to my UA-cam algorithm. I am just a hobbist, but I am currently looking to make some music sound complete, professional, and all that entails. It is a learning journey and I am enjoying the progress. Thanks
Love a studio tour.
I'm jealous of your froggy bottom guitar, I'm still searching for my perfect acoustic.
great video. great studio... great mind
Nice set up. Thank you for taking the time to take us through it.

God bless the algorithm. Love this.
need me a damn desk like that, big props man

Love your space. It’s dusty, but there’s something cool about that, lol. Great job!
In all seriousness. It was inspiring. You made me feel like even though I don’t have everything you have, it’s ok. Thank you!

Jon, you’re great. We all do the personal dance parties, we’re just pretending to be too cool to admit it. My cat empathises with your dog.
So cool! My wife and I are house hunting right now. Looking forward to getting out of our NYC apt, and creating a space like this of my own😊

Hahahahahah looove this. I would love to have drawings for the desk!!!!!
I'm sure I threw away the napkin I drew the plans on!

Consider the SSL UF8 as an upgrade to the nanokontrol.

I feel that
Why are we the same? Chaos but organised, bro!
But where do you keep your left handed screwdriver?
Great set up man .. yeah get a xlr patch bay and give them a good clean :) dust is the enemy in the studio for sure
Thanks! Will do!
Cool studio tour. The video title is a bit misleading though since you're just showing off you're gear instead of talking about efficiency.
My thoughts exactly.
Wow. Made a subscriber out of me. Thanks bro… I will glean from your journey…
nice setup! Let me know if you ever get around to selling any of those flutes!! Am interested, and in the US :-)
Hey its John Mayer
11:11 I know why your wife doesn't like that lamp. Ol' 1922 speakeasy lamp.
Man great creative space congratulations, I also too have a music room tour on my channel for those interested in gear.
Hmmm. Is this video hinting at something?
🤫
icon qcon ?
Just found your channel. Good work. Black edged gaffa tape 🤔
Awesome. Just Subscribed. This is my second video
I am wondering the demand for solo piano ✨🎶
88 beautiful studiologic sl1100 here, god I would love to just take the carcass away and put it in the desk. WOW
dude that p bass sounds incredible! flat wounds?
yep. Labella
I love your drawers. Nicely labelled but full of cr*p - just like mine, except I don’t even have labels - but I know (mostly) where to look to find stuff.

Van Neistat. He releases weekly UA-cam vids.
For monitor controller, look at an Audient Nero.
Will do
I use the AUDIO4+. Isn't iConnectivity just really GOOD?!
Putting the charging port on a wireless mouse on the bottom is.... well something.
What light are you using?
Could of skipped all of it and just made videos.
