Anecdotal story. I followed this phone like a lot of other people and decided not to preorder it because of so little information. Then after it was actually released I saw nothing but bad reviews. So I decided to actually take a look at it at a demo. Within 15 seconds of looking at the holographic content I bought the phone. Seeing is believing this is an unbelievable device. it transforms the way you take pictures and how you look at mundane objects through a lens. I have personally found this to be a transformative device. Holopix is very addictive and kind of like Instagram. I regularly see updates and it's only made the device better. For people who never hold a Red Hydrogen One, they have no idea what they're missing. It's the most satisfying phone to hold. It's built like a tank! I'm still using my titanium version daily and I couldn't imagine switching to something else. Used to buy a new phone every year but that might have to be a thing in the past. Too bad Red cancelled the project. Hopefully there will be a more appealing design phones from other phone manufacturers in the future. I really don't like the rounded edges smartphone approach.

pro-X-gamer I own a RED camera and the sensor size isn’t even 2 inches long. Regardless of size, RED would never put the same sensor they use for film cameras into a phone. It’s mind boggling that RED didn’t manufacture their own cameras for their own phone.
actually i'm glad to see someone else pushing the envelope of smartphone tech in a field other than notches...if they get it right, it would be great for the entire industry
There's no excuse for this phone flop, its not an upstart company. It's an established company selling to major studios and production companies charging six figures (more than most peoples' houses) for a device. I don't understand the lack of ability to make a truly remarkable phone. Perhaps they should have developed a "mini red" sensor to put in the phone...that would be nice.
I've actually had the Hydrogen since September 7th as a 'houdini' tester, immediately took it on the road to Europe and IBC. The speed and sheer depth of updates since then-- and the quality of red service has been astounding-- image quality has improved dramatically-- the upward slope of improvement shows no leveling off (I have the bokeh and refocus update... amazing). Also, on the Android side, latest Android patches, stock, clean. Where I differ with you is that everyone I have shown this to has had a visceral amazed reaction to the 3d effect. Any camera can be made to take bad photos-- when you hit the sweet spot, images are astounding and they pop. There is no doubt, 100% that there will be a camera module, with a Red designed sensor, meant to be a mirrorless killer. This phone is Jim Jannard's personal quest-- 4v only gets better and they pull off pocket cinema with real lenses. It's in stores now, go see it yourself if you are doubtful.
There is a huge possibility RED may offload the workload on a much faster secondary CPU within the cinema module itself. Where the Hydrogen will mostly be relegated to just saving files. IF we see this module... Saving grace, the module should have been released day 1.
The issues that you mentioned in the first minute of the video, it’s weird that none of the other big UA-camrs mentioned them. I didn’t think there were issues that big on the phone. Thanks for sharing, man.
Even if I had the money for this thing, I don't think I could justify getting it. It really feels like a camera with a phone slapped on, rather than a phone/camera hybrid, and that's why the price is so high. I could get a nice DSLR for less outright and deal with less hassle when taking pictures.
You could actually get a good DSLR of any kind with a kit lens and buy another better lens and still spend less than the $1300-1500 you'd be spending on the Hydrogen One.
@@GabrielIgnacio yep, or buy an entry level $500 Canon or Nikon with a 50mm 1.8 at around $100 and have a much better package for less than half the price.
Ordered it today! Leap of faith but I am looking forward to the modular accessories. First half full review I've heard. Every other phone is like a swiss army knife and clones every popular design. I think most folks are expecting perfection all the way around. I wish they had executed the release better (modular prices and maybe a lense?) This isn't for everybody but it has potential. Great review!
this has got to be the worst buy of a smartphone for the price they are asking. Its a year old already and it will be two as soon as the new snapdragons and other chips arrive. Which is not too far out. I think that is unacceptable. Sure this is RED first time and it shows, its a good thing they wont quit their day job. A quick grand opening and grand closing of the smartphone market seems unavoidable. This hardware material seems hard to update yearly with the latest chip. The next attempt (if they ever get that far) for a possible RED 2, that wont be released until, what?, 2021? and that might have a old chip in it. *shrugs*
Honestly, I'd wait for RED to do something for cameras, namely make something that isn't gonna cost an entire car just to get the main module without any add-ons or lenses factored into the price. That being said, I'm VERY tempted to pick this up despite already having an S9 I tend to use for video, paired with a Smooth 4 to boot. Just my shallow "be that guy with something that really stands out" inner child coming out.
I just wish RED would've kept quiet about the whole thing until say a month or two before actual availability. Such a well written and delivered review though that brings into question a few points other reviewers failed to raise. Bravo.
I wish they had just stuck to a phone camera with red "color science" and crazier camera hardware (Like idk, 5 cameras or a micro 4/3) rather than fluff it up with 4V that we all know died since the HTC evo 3D and nintendo 3DS. Red is the only company that can justify reviving the Galaxy Zoom craziness.
The Cinema module will use it's own processor, as Jim put it, the 835 does not have the horsepower to make .R3D files, and that will be done on the module. So don't worry about that 835! :)
I just started shopping for a new phone in the last few days after taking nearly three years off from thinking about such things. While I really love the Pixel 3 for its camera (sorry I compared the two but I'm trying to up my social media game in the year 2019), the hydrogen one's aesthetics and feel blew me away today in the store. While I know that phones have to be more than their looks and feel (I also like the huge screen) the hardware of this phone is superb in my book and I really hope Red pulls through!
You know I really believe you're the first reviewer to actually try to give the public a visual idea of that holographic feature, and that says a lot about how you view your viewers, thanks.
I love how they call it “Better than 3D... Without glasses”, when that’s literally what it is! The only 3D device that I know of that’s actually stuck is the Nintendo 3DS. I own one of those and I absolutely love it, but it definitely didn’t succeed because of the 3D. I’ve always loved the effect - especially on the New 3DS systems, but the reason it performed so well were the games. The 3DS actually had many other strong reasons to buy it. Not to mention, if you’re like me and you enjoy the 3D effect - there’s actually tones of 3D-enabled content for it too!
I bought mine used with a dead motherboard. 1 motherboard replacement and some double sided tape later and I got to use it for the first time, it was a really cool experience. Sadly the modules may not come out. But that wont stop me from using the phone in general.
As average cell phone user, Red Hydrogen One is a great phone. No matter what all the professional UA-camrs say. The 3d camera is not perfect but very close. Might not use it ever day but I'll have it ready in my pocket when I do. The size is just an illusion. Its size is the same as a Samsung Note 8 with case. The weight is also subjective. I've carried the Hydrogen with no additional problems than when I carried a Note 8. Price is the only real arguable issue. That is now resolved with Red having the aluminum & titanium for $399 & $649, respectively. You are crazy not to purchase one, now that the price issue is resolved. Some people just have to hate it to justify getting the next, newer, shiny phone. Those people will never be satisfied with any phone.
Finally someone mentions the HTC Evo 3D! To be honest, when I first got my Evo 3D, I loved it. It was gimmicky sure, but it was years ahead of it's time.
Even though when I saw your first review you did sound a bit arrogant to me, I have to say you really are one of the best, if not the best, reviewer on youtube. You know your job, you know how to do it. Hats off to you mate
This isn't even the first camera with a camera module(it even hasn't yet). Remember the moto mod with the crazy zoom? It would be nice if you compared those two when the RED module comes out.
I own a RED camera not only because I like their approach and vision, but 'cause I shoot music festivals, and in most cases, we shoot on RED cameras, so the workflow relies on RED. But you know what intrigues me the most? Recently, a few peeps I know bought a HYDROGEN because they have a RED camera, so why not, right? They were all iPhone users, one of 'em ever since the first came out back in 2007... He said: "Never thought Android is so cool, I'll never go back to an iPhone! And HYDROGEN is the perfect phone for me, better that my old iPhone in every way." He had an iPhone X... I wonder what does those dudes will say if you hand 'em a Pixel 3 to play for a few days? "Meh, I don't like the ecosystem." Now this intrigues me, the level of brand attachment people need to have in order to act "unconciously". If it wasn't RED, those peeps would never have considered buying an Android device. DONE.
I don't like this Phone, mainly because i'm not generally fond of products that only satisfy a small demographic, the second reason is how the heck is this priced higher than an almost perfect machine as the Note 9. Michael's Reviews certainly are the best tho.
It's actually one of the reasons I like the RED. It satisfies a small demographic so it can implement features that fit that group well instead of trying to cater to everyone. I'm not saying they did that here though which is unfortunate.
Absolutely LOVE your videography of "middle" America Michael - more please! Oh, er, back to the Red phone, begs the question "Won't there be a Hydrogen 2 by next year?" Putting all your falldowns right (they listen to you!) and bringing the specs up in line with SD850? (Yeah, AND increased price) ☹
Please revisit the Red Hydrogen in 2023. I think it got way more criticism than it deserved. It was actually awesome and did far more right than reviewers complained about. Everything that was called a gimmick was actually incredibly useful and unique. I love this phone. I think it is one of the most unique devices ever released. And it is built like a tank. Even next to my iPhone 14 Pro, I still prefer its 3D display. And yes it does work as a monitor on Red Cine Cameras. The 3D screen and 3d video recording is better than any other phone.
Dear Mr mobile, when ur writing the Mate 20 Pro's review, can u address the screen problem issue, whether u found it in ur unit, or know what's going on with it, every reviewer doesn't say anything wrong with the display, yet people still complain about it, ur my no.1 tech youtuber, so please can u address that?
@@tarkfarhen3870 My comment was more of a critique to the OP. If you're going to put a rugged case on a beautiful phone, then you might as well buy an "ugly" phone instead for a lot less, like the Pocophone F1.
Finally a phone that isn't some stupid copy of an iPhone X.... and it's actually good! Hardware camera button, 16:9 display, front firing speakers, headphone jack, more hrdware components.
Definitely one of the best reviews I've seen of the RH1. You and MKBHD. I actually love the H4V content more than most but agreed on a number of the faults with the phone itself. That said, I'm pretty convinced RED should do pretty well to support the device. They constantly post to h4vuser.net with the latest bits of updates and news. They just laid out the next software updates for Nov and December. The phone by itself is pretty blah. The modules, support and ecosystem they're working to craft around it and future iterations are what sell me more than the device itself.
I think the 3d feature kind of smartphone from future. Maybe we doesnt use it now but maybe some companies will implement from the future. I also do think they should put red sensor.
The HTC EVO 3D couldn't grab the masses and this one won't either. I appreciate the ambition though. Any newcomers are welcome in the tech space because it pushes innovation. Great video!
At its price point it won’t go mainstream and it’s dated specs, old school 3D gimmicks and off the shelf camera I don’t even see enthusiasts wanting it. Except you it seems. Looking forward to further impressions, especially if the modules make a difference.
If this phone came out a few months earlier maybe just maybe I could see my self buying it, but I’m hearing waaaaaaay to many negatives and the modules aren’t even guaranteed
The camera sensor is actually made by Sony, because apparently the engineers at RED failed to meet every single deadline to produce their own sensors scaled down for a smartphone, so they went with a Sony sensor instead. I think they did make the camera lens and shutter in-house though.
Just like everyone says, the 3D effect doesn't really translate to video - but check out the 4:00 mark for the best approximation I could make!
RED makes the best camera BUT didn't make the camera for the Hydrogen One.... Doesn't make sense.
I would love to play around with one. Unfortunately, no store in my area carries them. That I've found so far anyways.

It's actually one of the reasons I like the RED. It satisfies a small demographic so it can implement features that fit that group well instead of trying to cater to everyone. I'm not saying they did that here though which is unfortunate.
Hey Michael, are you going to review the HTC U12+? (Another phone with terrible sales numbers like this Red phone will probably have)
I always take ur 1440p 60fps for granted. Love the video.
Would've loved it if the watch at 7:33 rotated in the opposite direction.
Good review. I always liked the way you narrate smoothly into pros and cons
Why do I find the photos and videos shot by you better than others who reviewed this phone?
The way you shot the pins is amazing!
Finally found my favourite tech reviewer been looking all over youtube
Atleast ur not hating on the phone, unlike other youtubers
Much much better review than any other review from other big time reviewers out there. Leaps and bounds better.
The 3D screen and 3d video recording is better than any other phone.

so basically, portrait mode?
That accessory part aged very, very poorly.
That large back camera protruding glass looks kinda like the old Lumia 950XL I used to have.
When is the review of xr releasing
Dear Mr mobile,
when ur writing the Mate 20 Pro's review, can u address the screen problem issue, whether u found it in ur unit, or know what's going on with it, every reviewer doesn't say anything wrong with the display, yet people still complain about it, ur my no.1 tech youtuber, so please can u address that?
Rather have a rugged case on a beautiful phone and save $500
But then you'd have an ugly phone.
@@tarkfarhen3870 My comment was more of a critique to the OP. If you're going to put a rugged case on a beautiful phone, then you might as well buy an "ugly" phone instead for a lot less, like the Pocophone F1.
If the phones beautiful does it make it perform better?
I really like you found some good things about this phone! It has its drawbacks but you didn't just crap on it like all the other reviews.
The modules are also why I want the RED. I think I will still be on the fence until the 2nd gen, if it comes out.
Such a slick and well composed review. Loving it. Keep it up!
Finally a phone that isn't some stupid copy of an iPhone X.... and it's actually good! Hardware camera button, 16:9 display, front firing speakers, headphone jack, more hrdware components.
Please do a review of the Fossil Sport Smartwatch with the new Snapdragon 3100 chip
Michael - really nice job of providing a balanced review. Always appreciate your work.
Regarding the modules Michael.
I am skeptical about SD835's ability to drive lens as powerful as your DSLRs. It can't even record 4K 60 FPS.
A side note. You have a great sounding voice. Good review.
Seeing this again years later because I saw this phone for sale at 200usd. I guess they never delivered on the promised modules, huh?
Mate 20 pro review?
At its price point it won’t go mainstream and it’s dated specs, old school 3D gimmicks and off the shelf camera I don’t even see enthusiasts wanting it. Except you it seems. Looking forward to further impressions, especially if the modules make a difference.
I would like to see more smartphone that incorporates an photography size image sensors.
If this phone came out a few months earlier maybe just maybe I could see my self buying it, but I’m hearing waaaaaaay to many negatives and the modules aren’t even guaranteed
Great review man, another excellent mr. Mobile original, keep up the great work!
Always waiting for your videos
Yep promised and failed 5:45
Great review like always a true review thanks I'm gonna hold off a little see where this goes
Background Music is so calm and great
What's a "bouquet effect"? Funny subtitles. :)
Good review Michael Givin your own personal 'Hydrogen a chance for this device!
at this point, I just watch these reviews as entertainment ... wonderfully shot
Thanks!
The camera sensor is actually made by Sony, because apparently the engineers at RED failed to meet every single deadline to produce their own sensors scaled down for a smartphone, so they went with a Sony sensor instead. I think they did make the camera lens and shutter in-house though.
I'm here to see your video, because I heard your unmistakable voice in the last video of mkbhd and the other guy mrs hose the boss
This channel deserves a million subscribers. I'm actually surprised it doesn't.
Excellent video, very informative, as always. Thanks Mr. Mobile & keep them coming.
