불교적인 색채가 강한 독무(獨舞)로, 한국무용 특유의 ‘정중동(靜中動)·동중정(動中靜)’의 정수가 잘 표현되어 민속무용 중 가장 예술성이 높다는 평가를 받는다.
Seungmu (Yi Mae-bang Style)

Designated as the Important Intangible Property No. 27, seungmu is one of Korea's most significant folk dances. It draws its meaning from Buddhist rituals. This dance is divided into two main parts, the first part being the dance itself and the second, the second part is when the dancer reveals two drum sticks and starts drumming on a big barrel drum hanging inside a wooden stand. When dancing, the elegant movements of the soloist are underlined by the special costume, a white gown with long sleeves. This dance conveys the temptations of a monk trying to overcome worldly desires, corrupt thoughts, pain and suffering.
