Outro music by David Vonk/DaJaVo
I hate that HDR is such a mess.
Still better than SDR
The only place where it works best is with a 4K TV, but not a Samsung, as they won’t pay Dolby a couple of bucks for certification on a $3000+ TV. Sony or LG are winners in the home market.
@@4epa1012Not on an LCD unless it’s miniLED FALD.
Get an LG G4.
@@budthecyborg4575 Yep, pretty much the best OLED
Hey Tim, you should test the EOTF tracking on the "Gaming HDR" mode, as this mode seems to be a lot more accurate. Both the Gaming HDR and Cinema HDR modes have the brightness boost on without being able to turn it off.
The Cinema HDR mode adds a weird sort of filter over the scene, making it the worst mode out of the bunch.
I was going to say, I'm surprised he only tested one of the modes. I actually prefer Gaming HDR but would've like a more detailed explanation on what changed on all modes.
Would you say this monitor is still a beast? I managed to get one but won't be here in like a month
Nuuh, Cinema HDR is quite accurate after this changes. It preserves the most details in brighter scenes.
And I am also surprised why these modes have not been tested.
@@tmx8686 I think its the best one out there IMO. I also have the FO32U2P and prefer the ASUS after the newest update
@@ZekkRagnos good to know, thanks. From what I got from this video is that I should be good since I'll be gaming on my Xbox series X.
Are you going to review the Samsung G80SD?
A brand that is unreliable then fails to provide anywhere near adequate customer support worldwide? only reason to get samsung is from retailers with a crazy good return policy which is in the minority, just like you samsung fanboys
Yes hes a bit late on this.... hopefully he will acknowledge it soon.
I can't believe content like yours if free. Thank you so much for delivering high quality stuff every week!
i hope next years monitors can get their shit together. all have DP2.1 UHBR20, unrestricted HDR on par with the same panels that are on TV's. and Windows 12, properly supports HDR, DV, HDR10+ etc.
DP 2.1 is a mess.
Barely supports a few feet of length when hdmi 2.1 is enough currently.
@Savitarax way to not understand the comment at all, and reply with something completely irrelevant to "next years"
@@mz1929 no no, that was intentional. It’s a mess because DP 2.1 even next year will have to be active or fiber optic. Which makes it a mess in general. Way worse than an HDMI 2.1 cable. I meant that as in. It’s bad and it will continue to be bad because the standard requires not only proper vendor labeling BUT ALSO proper integration like cable quality.
@@Savitarax it'll be fine. They have already addressed having normal length cables by next year.
@@Savitarax No idea where you got this bs info. Dp 2.1 supports well over 10 feet or more....
I wish Alienware3225qf would update their firmware. I love it but I'm consdiring taking it back to get the PG32UCM. I prefer the curve and it sucks that they haven't updated the firmware to fix multiple issues and oversights. The yellow tint in the only dci p3 mode that allows a gamma slider is simply unforgivable.
I love that the Gigabyte FO32U2P also offers APL Medium and High for SDR.
I enjoy SDR a lot more on APL High than on its default low.
Putting the gamma to 2.4 solves the issue with APL High being too bright on dark scenes. I'm really happy with it how nice the colors pop out now despite SDR.
Of course the dimming on a bright scene still happens and thus my SDR has bad EOTF too, but for me its the best image I could get out of the FO32U2P. So what I use for SDR is:
Picture Mode: Default
APL: High
Brightness: 50
Contrast: 50
Sharpness: 5
Saturation: 10
Super Resolution: 2
Black Equalizer: 0 (why would I destroy 100% black being 100% black? just nope)
Color: Red: 96, Green: 99, Blue: 100
Gamma: 2.4 (fixes brightening up of dark scenes by the APL High, keeps the 1000 nits on low percent windows. Color saturation seems greater on 2.4 too)
This gives great color popout on SDR.
HDR Game will look a lot better again if you change gamma back to at least 2.2. For some reason it is set to gamma 2.0 which desaturates the colors too. But yes its brighter then 😀
With the Alienware AW3225QF, I found out that using Dolby Vision Birght was the best option for movies and shows, as it gives way better pop for highlights than the HDR1000 mode even though it slighly lifts the middle tones, If only they fix the EOTF tracing.
My biggest issue with this display is that it randomly turns off. Current lead idea is that it’s related to vrr. Also with 105 update they broke the standby mode, now you have to click on the display controls to bring osd to force it to wake up after standby/sleep, which was not an issue on 103. It feels like asus was rushing the fw for this thing, and is still struggling to iron out all the software issues.
Check and make sure that the proximity detection is turned off. Mine was doing the same thing until I noticed that feature in the OSD.
@@btnoodles proximity sensor never worked with hdr, and it’s a separate issue
The monitor looks interesting, but looking to get one is very difficult currently (EU based) it seems there is no stocks for this specific monitor.
I purchased the PG32UCDM based on your recommendations, and it is the single greatest upgrade I made during my new system build.
Thank you, Tim and Steve, for making great content for us consumers.
After only 4 years, my ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQL1A died just today, whatever you do, NEVER BUY AN ASUX MONITOR !!!
I've been using ASUS for years. Never had a single issue with any of the 6 or so products I've used.
@@btnoodles Pure luck, or you didn't use them long enough, just look at how many ppl complain about the green/blue horizontal or vertical lines appearing out of nowhere in the asus reddit
Watching this from my PG32UCDM, bought cause a couple of vertical lines of my LG 27GN950 completely died near the middle of the screen, got the 10% preorder discount and I was very skeptical about OLEDs but I'm loving the experience till now
I've seen lots of people complain about dolby vision. Dolby Vision Dark worked really well for me with the Alienware 3225qf. It looks pretty close to the HDR True Black setting,. As a result, I've left Dolby vision (Dark) on, been playing games and watching content for a month. Works pretty flawless, colors dont look washed out, the bright parts look bright, looks amzing. Also calibrated the windows hdr profile. Using the latest version of Win 11.
I can understand people not wanting Dolby Vision Bright mode, as that sometimes washed out colour, but Dolby Vision Dark is on point. I also have an OLED TV which i use for dolby vision content, had it for 6 years, so if there was anything off with the monitor, id be able to tell as it would bother the crap out of me.
You know what looks even better? Actually properly adjusted SDR.....
@@drunkhusband6257I’ve been using rtx enhancement for sdr video content. The only thing non hdr is probably the desktop itself and it doesn’t look bad at all. Yet to try a game that doesn’t have hdr support, so far so good though.
I'm watching this video from my Asus rog PG32UCDM, I'm really in love.
Lol me too
Thanks Tim! I have this exact monitor and did the update while watching your video! Great work as always! Glad Asus makes the firmware updates for this monitor so easy.
Well, Peak brightness for long periods of time actually promotes panel degradation and image retention, which is why i think samsung has implemented dimming. Its a downside of OLED.
This
Can you make a video on the color settings. Can’t find the right guide for color setting figures.
Brightness is super important for brighter room setups not everyone has a light controlled rooms and with glossy it can be really hard to see in dark scenes. When it is in a dark room QD glossy is sooo pretty but mid day gaming near a window is rough.
i picked up this monitor its awesome and the SDR brigtness is good iv had 3 oled monitors this kills them
Have you had the new 240/480Hz LG OLED monitor? If so, how do you think it compares to this ASUS for Movie and video watching?
@@MaZEEZaMI’ve owned both and the PG32UCDM is the best gaming monitor I’ve ever owned.
Unfortunately up to 500€ more expensive than competitor products.
Do you have any plans to review the the new mini led monitors from TCL? They are aviable in europe and look very promising
Obviously limited because they dont want panels dying from burnin. Advertise as 3000nits capability and sell at 800nits real world brightness.
I thought Asus was kind of a bad company when it comes to customer service. The MSI model is never in stock so the cheaper price is just a gimmick.
Is it possible for this kind of update to be brought over to other qd oled panels too? Like the aw3423dwf
Unfortunately those are Gen 1 panels without the Anti-burn-in measures these Gen 3 panels have, it's too risky for a manufacturer. That said, Gigabytes new 240hz QD-Oled Ultrawide with Gen 2 panel should be able to do it with a dialogue box warning what the user is doing, so those with the tech knowledge can go ahead with it since they already take their own anti-burn-in measures while the rest mostly stick with HDR1000. That feature would have a cumulative effect on sales for Gigabyte being the top recommended by tech enthusiasts, otherwise Alienware will capitalize again with a Gen 3 or even Gen 4 ultrawide riding the success of their AW3423DWF.
According to rtings, this monitor seems to have twice the input lag when running at 120hz compared to the Aorus FO32U2P. Why? Will this be noticeable when running xbox or pc games at 120fps? My ancient 1080p ips monitor has 4.9ms of input lag at 120hz and this thing has 10.8ms at 120hz. That seems pretty bad for a monitor that costs $1300.
10.8 would be horrible for an OLED. OLED is normally super fast
@De-M-oN according to rtings it's a whopping 19.3 @60hz and 10.8 @120hz and a very good 2.7 @240hz. That just seems wild to me for $1300. Think I'm gonna go with the aorus as I won't always be gaming at 240hz.
rtings also says that HDR is brighter than SDR.......it's not..on anything.
Hey you missed the changes to the other non console HDR modes which all are brighter now too! They also have different pq eotf tracking which might be what some people might prefer as far as I know the gaming HDR mode doesn't make darker scenes too bright but sacrifices acuracyfor brighter elements. You should def include this information as Asus failed to mention it and is highly relevant to users!
They fixed the full scene brightness in HDR1000 modes, which made a huge difference for me. I perceive the Dolby Vision modes as too dim so I left it at HDR10.
12 Bit from a Dolby Vision source was proven to have a difference over 5 years ago by Vincent from HDTVtest.
Dolby Vision has a bad reputation because nasty Dolby was pushing the licensing in the market so hard that by the end of production for films, little budget was allocated to make properly mastered Dolby Vision versions. Consequently people that have no clue when buying into this market over-attach to others telling them that Dolby Vision is the best, then they attach to the murky visual mess that Dolby Vision became with poor dynamic range. This led to a cumulative market effect of post-process teams purposely having to master Dolby Vision to look like trash because there's an established audience for it. In the end Dolby still won, they don't have as much competition after establishing a halt in technology from the confusion that they capitalized on after they selfishly caused it. That's why HDR10 is more reliable when we should have moved on from it a long time ago.
Also these manufacturers probably bring down the brightness and saturation in DV mode to suit those audiences furthering the mess. Though the engineers probably know all this already and also know that these monitors have relatively poor window size brightness which kinda ruins EOTF for movies vs market standard TV's that post-process mastering teams center around. The lower brightness as well as desaturation offsets the HDR1000 mode and its curve, whereas for gaming there are HDR controls built into the menus to sync the game with the monitor's properties.
If you don't want a dim display then turn HDR OFF.......SDR is brighter in literally everything.
Samsung advertise this panel to support Dolby Version and HDR1000 but you said the truth these are existing feature but with troubles and yet these under experiments IMHO. It's better to consider this as HDR400 monitor only and keep the troubles away!
There is no such thing as HDR1000 or HDR400, it's all made up bs for sales. There is no actually measurable standard currently.
Compare to LG C4 please!
what is causing the checkerboard patterns at 4:03 ? the icons and screen look like there are "holes" or patterns all over everything
Guessing it's some weird artifact caused by the camera.
And I still don't know which monitor to purchase...........
Please buy gigabyte aourus fo32u2p
are you going to make a review on the new samsung oled monitors (G6, G8)?
Can you review the Samsung 32 Inch Odyssey OLED G8 G80SD
Got the Pg32Ucdm.. tbh very slight difference from my Innocn 32M2V when watching both SDR & HDR… in some scenes ASUS colours look tiny bit punchier because is slightly less brighter… I am ok with the ASUS brightness so far
the Innocn can be really bright that I have to look away like when I play FF7 rebirth on PS5…when I am inside a building and looking at entrance door the outdoor light is blinding
Why does DolbyVision mode force brightness down? Isn't HDR better with higher brightness?
Because these monitors are not HDR ready and brute force them to be it.
lower brightness can help with better eotf tracking. Higher peak leads to higher APL at larger windows size. A limitation of samsung QD-OLED
I'll take accuracy at 400 nits over inaccuracy at 1000 nits any day
Yes me too!!! Also I don't have my monitors /TV facing a window. Also my windows have curtains
@@tmx8686 Same. Blackout curtains work wonders lol
So what are the best settings? I'm still using SDR because it simply looks better than any HDR mode
Bro where is the new Samsung odyssey G6 review? Can't trust another UA-camr to review it
I’m looking to build a new gaming PC in the next six months. I am willing to spend the money to build a high end computer as long as it makes sense. My initial plan was to get the latest and greatest CPU, GPU, etc…. Waiting to see the 50 series GPU’s and AMD 9800X3D releases, but in the meantime started looking into monitors for upcoming sales. This is where my dilemma starts.
My current monitor is a 27” [Acer XB271HU bmiprz 27.0" 2560 x 1440 165 Hz Monitor teamed with a 1080 GPU]. I like the size, also being that my eyes would typically be less than three feet from the display, 27” is technically the correct size. I wanted to go with the best, so I was thinking about a minimum 240Hz, OLED 4K monitor. However after watching some videos I’m questioning if 4K is overkill? Would 1440p be sufficient and the step up to 4K be non-value added.
This could change my whole build. If the monitor is 1440p do I really need the highest tier CPU and GPU? Is getting a wider desk or wall mounting the monitor my solution.
Keep in mind I would like this build to be relevant for the next five to seven years, with minor upgrades as necessary. Probably 90% of current computer time is playing Ark: Survival Ascended. My current monitor will become the secondary screen.
From what I understand ... Windows Dolby Vision is really just some kind of advanced tone mapping, no?
It's not true DV ... or am I just going mad?
All HDR is in general is different tone mapping, it's all software tech with no standard
450 nits cap...?! What were they thinking? 🤦
Please make this channel HDR. It’s ridiculous that’s it’s not in this day and age.
After years of chaos in the graphics card market resulting in sky-high prices, I can't afford QD OLED or any OLED.
When will you make a video about which of the 32inch qd-oled 4k monitors released this year is the best for gaming?
3:17 also, due to unreasonable anti-piracy practices, no modern hardware is capable of 4k Blu-ray playback for PC.
As briefly mentioned, one would need to use an external device (such as an Xbox or some other streaming device).
It's really unfortunate.
rip that bluray onto your disk drive. then it works.
MakeMKV is your friend...
Take a shot everytime the term "Dolby Vision" is used
Alienware needs to do this for their AW3225QF. Gigabyte should do it too especially for their new 240hz QD Oled ultrawide, the MO34WQC2, to capitalize on that market.. or Alienware will on their next ultrawide likely to be next gen and more capable on the back of the successful AW3423DWF.
Even if it makes it more susceptible to burn-in for the Gigabyte, just put a stern/scary message to confirm that a user wants to switch to that mode for efficient higher brightness and whoever understands tech will be fine as they take anti-burn-in measures anyway. The rest will stick to the HDR1000 mode.
I hope that Dell will implement a similar feature for the AW3225QF with a new firmware update. Otherwise I will consider selling it and getting one of the Gigabyte or Asus models. The HDR400 True Black mode is very noticably less vibrant than the Peak 1000 mode, while the latter is close to unusable in brighter scenes. These really are unacceptable compromises for such an expensive piece of hardware.
thank you for your great video
but can you please talk about the lg 32gs95ue firmware update if it is any good :')
Woled is old technology, how is that not obvious to you? Only people buying Woled are those playing in the Day in a room with a lot of "in-direct" light on their display due to the matte finish and polarising layer that keeps blacks deep (retains contrast).

Hi, justr got my monitor, can we have a video about how to use the settings, and which settings are best to us please?
3:01 So, dolby vision with Netflix (with the higher tier subscription) or Disney+ only works with an external media device? If you use these streaming services through Windows, does it use dolby vision or no?
On the Dolby website it states that the native app on windows 10 & 11, as well as the Edge browser supports streaming Dolby Vision to a display that supports it, so should work.
@blacetv5522 I appreciate your help, thank you!

Any reduction in VRR flicker with the new firmware? (MSI release a firmware update for their 32" 4K QD-OLED that supposedly alleviates the problem)
I cant imagine there is much benefit from DV if its capped to 400 nits. How much dynamic HDR would be on 400 nit cap left over? Sounds senseless to me.
Please test the LG 32GS95UE with the latest firmware.
OLED and HDR both seem great but it also seems like they have massive weaknesses/problems/require a lot of attention. I'm lost on what monitor to buy with my crappy IPS having way too much bloom to the point where dark games are unplayable, but OLED seems like a chore. IDK what to do.
When I enable Dynamic Brightness Boost in the Console HDR in Windows HDR Calibration tool my Maximum Luminance peaks at around 450 instead of the ~1000 that I usually get without the boost enabled. Not sure what's going on here.

What I dont understand is, all these big tech YT reviewers seem to ignore that the PG38UQ even EXISTS!!! I have not seen one professional review of the the PG38UQ?
Also my MicroCenter here in Tustin, Ca, had 25 of the PG32UCDM this morning.
Like I said nice looking monitor but it did have issues, well at least mine did.
So yet these QD panel cannot be considered as Dolby Vision supported IMHO, so it's better to leave the HDR1000 enabled. One, the dell monitor support eArc since I have Atmos surround system amd was planning to get over others only because of that. and now a bit confused 😂😅
The only reason why the panel was dimmer to begin with, is because the manufacturers wanted to prevent faster burn-in. So you're getting the panel how it should have been from the start, but with that risk of your panel burning in faster. Hope it's worth it for all those who complained.
Highlights cap is for preventing burn-in. Average brightness cap is about "energy saving"...
@@CrazyPCman No, the brightness cap was 100% to prevent faster burn-in. It's already been officially stated as being the reason behind that decision.
Three year burn-in warranty mostly solves this problem. Additionally, burn-in results mostly from using OLED-monitors with static elements, like you would on the desktop, where you are using SDR anyway, and peak brightness does not matter.
Please do a review of the Samsung Odyssey OLED G6 (G60SD) 360 QD-OLED
Which Dolby Vision Mode is best?

Still garbage HDR, what a surprise.
People got really conned with these "HDR" monitors. Just buy a 55 inch OLED TV.
HDR in combination with pixel level control adhering to the resolution of the display like oleds is what gives these monitors the reputation they have which you obviously don't understand. Lcd market by comparison capitalises on peoples desperation for something cheaper along filling their heads with rubbish from their lack of tech knowledge like yourself. The reality is Lcd panels are so much cheaper to produce and people think HDR is just about brightness. Not only does local dimming fail to keep up in action scenes and especially for gaming causing disorientation (not much of an issue for casual TV viewers), local dimming has a severely limited number of zones against the resolution of the display. Local dimming vs precise pixel level control at the same resolution is lower clarity full stop. Good HDR isn't the end goal for an image, a good image is the end goal and HDR is just a tool/measurement on getting that in combination with resolution, which is offset greatly by the much lower number of local dimming zones. Blooming is the extreme side effect of this and desperate people focus on eliminating just that to a degree without taking into account that the image is still nothing compared to precise pixel level control of an Oled. Anyone buying a similar priced Lcd monitor vs a similarly classed Oled is being severely ripped off unless they need no burn-in for the large amount of productivity they do (literally just invest in two cheaper monitors, Lcd AND Oled).
To top it off there's a lot of extra latency with local dimming lcds in combination with much higher response times, lower latency is your priority as a gamer.. to which Oled dominates.
@@Cenkolinohumans are evolved to process things differently at different distances. Operating systems and PC games are designed to be viewed from within a few feet. On a 55" much further away there's disorientation.
@@Cenkolinopeople really concerned about “HDR” OLED Tvs just buy a 98 inch micro led tv and put it on your desk.
@@StevoHDALiterally not how it works. No amount of pixel level control will give these monitors an acceptable HDR experience past 5% windows. This is readily apparent when comparing mini leds, and even OLED TVs that provide a massively more impactful HDR experience than this current batch of monitors. HDR brightness does matter and it matters a ton.
Compare just about any of these monitors to an LG G series and see just how comically poor the HDR is on the monitors.
Such excellent work. Too bad you're just one person doing this independent testing.

Hey Tim, one question though. I just bought MAG 271qpx and connected to my 4090 using hdmi 2.1 (which can support 8k 120hz) cable, it doesn't have any signal or images, just black screen. My rig a bit rare case as my 4090 also connect to triple 48GQ900 oc 138hz using display port. what is the maximum bandwidth of 4090 can support? I was worried if I buy the PG32ucdm later and face the same problem again. When I switch on the pc, triple 48GQ900 works fine and MAG 271qrx doesn't work even though I updated latest firmware and driver from MSI website. I search online couldn't find any answer for this even the local MSI dealer had no idea. by the way the 4090 I used to be ZOTAC 4090 AMP Extreme Airo. I perform a clean install driver using DDU and sometimes the MAG 27qpx works but one of the 48gq900 doesn't work and NV surrounds breaks and split both 48GQ900 into 2 individual window screens. Please help Tim..... T_T

I get that it might not be supper intresting because it is basicaly like 27gr95qe version with more brightness but come one
Dolby Vision is such a pain to get working, even if your display supports it. The easiest is streaming from Netflix etc., but even with those services I don't think any of the Windows clients support Dolby Vision. (Web browser clients definitely don't.) So, you would need an external streaming stick/box/console. As for BluRays, that's much more limited. You absolutely need a hardware DRM chip included in your BluRay player. Both PS5 and Xbox Series X do not support Dolby Vision BluRays (though they do support Dolby Vision streaming). Basically, the only way to get BluRay Dolby Vision is with a dedicated BluRay player that supports it. Good times!
By the way, Dolby Vision is not just about changing the max HDR brightness per scene. It also requires 12 bit color information. (The "10" in HDR10 and HDR10+ stands for 10 bit.) Virtually all OLED displays only really support 10 bit. So, absurdly, no consumer can really enjoy Dolby Vision to its full potential at home yet.
To add to that, 12 Bit from a Dolby Vision source was proven to have a difference over 5 years ago by Vincent from HDTVtest.
Dolby Vision also has a bad reputation because nasty Dolby was pushing the licensing in the market so hard that by the end of production for films, little budget was allocated to make properly mastered Dolby Vision versions.
@@StevoHDAwhat on earth? DV is way better than HDR10

@@StevoHDA Sigh, yes, consumers are caught in the middle of this commercial and technical mess.
Some major companies resist Dolby's licensing fees. Samsung simply refuses to support it in their products, even their high-end TVs.
With streaming it's "easier", because Dolby realized (probably sadly) that they couldn't charge the middle-men, and thus they had to support software-based licensing.
But nobody can deny that Dolby has a strong brand name, stronger than DTS. Thus when a new Netflix show comes out with a "Dolby Atmos + Vision" label at the top, well, it has some power. But, as you point out, it's no guarantee of quality.
By the way, there are BluRay UHD DVDs of David Lynch's movies, under the Criterion Collection. Dolby Vision, all approved by Lynch himself. That's how you ensure there is quality behind the brand logo.
i hope the samsung odessey oled G8 32" gets dolby too
