Brian Cox is the most sane, sober, cogent, yet soothing voice I've ever heard on this subject. I was mesmerized throughout the video just listening to him.
Not sure about that. Until recently he was of the school of thought "there are so many stars out there, there MUST be more civilisations out there". Now he seems to have changed his tune..
I made the exact point yesterday, I loved the idea that any issue no matter how crucial in the US politics will be bipartasianed to serve the interest of a failed 2 party system and media cooperation uninterested in the truth, no mater how it affects humanity. Ironically even the reception of the movie will be governed by this mentality, I can already see of the comments in here are like that 😂
The problem is with movies that are about climate change have to use metaphors or go OTT because if they made them with actual climate change in mind it would be a groundhog style movie where some guy keeps saying how an area will be underwater in 20 years and its our last chance to stop it. Every 20 years he would come back and say another 20 years and its definitely our last chance... Before eventually being buried in the same ground he said would be underwater. And that doesn't make people worried and hysterical does it
If Netflix doesn't commission a space documentary with Brian Cox I'll be disappointed. He's a treasure that needs to be used to inspire the next generation, it's our generation Carl Sagan!
The interesting thing about this guy is that he has been famous outside of science too ( he was in a band that has number1 hits a long time ago ) so he's potentially one of the best scientists to talk about " don't look up " that you could have too
to be fair, when I watched Deep Impact, after listening to the whiny girl in that film (Elijah woods girlfriend) I was rooting for the the asteroid in that film too!
The most depressing part about this movie is that while some other satire films are outlandish and unbelieveable, I fail to see how we arent already living in a version of dont look up
The movie was a metaphor. A GIANT ONE. That is why it was brilliant. Trump / COVID / Fauci .... it was obvious from the start that the comet represented death... a foreseeable and preventable death. The astronomer was trying to tell everyone of the doom... aka Fauci. The political world blocked the truth and worked only for personal and political gain... aka Trump. .... all of this went over your head?
@@HappyBuddhaBoyd we can do the same metaphor for climate change with this movie. They even use Kate Debiaky to do a raging meme like Greta Thunberg. Yule arrive to talk with her and he can't believe that she is now working for a cornerstore in his city after being on tv talking about the biggest problem in the world. Rendall Mindy is like any scientist talking about climate change in any ''good morning'' show on the tv. Thank you for coming but social media was more happy to see Riley Bina story. Janie Orlean is the Donald Trump. // By the way, have you miss the end of the video? '' Let's stop this climate crisis '' ! =D The comet can represent that slowly crisis that government don't care and say ''NET ZERO by 2050!!''
And he wrote that song for Tony Blairs campaign back in 97. Things could apparently only get better. If you define better as a million Iraqis gone and mass immigration to Britain.
When I was younger the future was supposed to be an intelligent, enlightened place. Since arriving at the future I find that outlook was unfortunately wrong in the most disastrous ways. At least it is populated by people like Professor Cox and that gives me a slim, shred of hope.
I also thought about the future in very idealistic ways. I was inspired by a future of humanity that Gene Rodenberry would portray. Humanity could learn from it's mistakes, mature, grow , develop and prosper. I had no idea of the human capacity that we have to lie to ourselves. "We have met the enemy and he is us"! Pogo
He says right there towards the end, "Don't hide your head in the sand. You've got to look up at the terror and beauty of nature". I think we should be afraid because the world is a frightening place and always has been but I don't think we should panic.
The movie showed that even facing the ultimate disaster we no longer can unite and act together as we are too divided, distracted by social media noise and abused by corporations. This is terrifying.
Astounding how many people tried to watch the movie and said ‘oh, it’s so boring I turned it off after 20 minutes’. How can anyone not be interested to understand the science behind our existence and our place within the universe? This movie depicts how the majority of the global population is ignorant to what the scientists are trying to communicate, albeit slightly exaggerated with a few LOL moments. I thought it was a great movie. Interesting, entertaining and the acting is superb!
This movie is a documentary just like Idiocracy I was not shocked from how politics, political correctness, human relationships, conspiracy theories and the rest was shown and its exactly how it is on what we are dealing with. So to the people that said this movie was boring, shows how accurate this movie is. Just like what Carlin said. "Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that"
People who turn anything off after twenty minutes have no right to have an opinion. You can argue that films/books/etc should capture its audience straight away but that is so vanilla. Also, as it’s a Netflix film people will have other distractions which makes it easier to turn it off. Guarantee these people wouldn’t leave the cinema twenty minutes in, and if they did would be smaller percentage than the ones claiming they turned it off
I loved the portrayal of people. It showed us at our best at being manipulated. We are like sheep. We look for any reason not to discover our true environment. We would rather give the few our libity to discover it for us and by doing so, indirectly control and manipulate us. Indeed The Lord must so love the world. 🙏
The standards we use to share on average about opinion, no longer exists. People believe there opinion is just as valid as anyone else, even if they know nothing about the topic at hand.
For me Brian Cox is to space as David Attenborough is to nature, he's easy to understand and good to watch, im never bored watching or listening to him and the subjects he talks about have me going away after and trying to learn more, no easy feat there tbh, just like Attenborough i wish he was on more

To me, this movie is about how governments and society are dealing with problems like COVID, climate change and so more. The comet is just a way to represent our problems that we need to deal with but we choose not to until it is close to us and it's too late.
US politicians are incapable of dealing with anything unless it involves helping big pharma, oil, tobacco, Wall Street, defence contractors or starting wars around the world. I watched the film with my wife just last night. We both knew going in that it was supposed to be a comedic, satire-esque spin on a pending natural disaster. But as we watched we both sat in stunned silence for much of it. The parallels to today's real world were impossible to ignore. The countless swaths of people ignoring science, spouting insane conspiracy theories, and fostering division for their own personal gain are a perfect mirror of current events. It made us both sad and fearful for the future of humanity. We did enjoy the movie, but for a very different reason and from a different viewpoint than most.
I had the same response. I think people who didn't like the movie had this response too, but were too afraid to confront the sad truth of what's been happening. Maybe they choose willful ignorance because the truth is scary and they just got a candy crush push notification so...

@@richardmartinez4429 It's about both, it started as a parody of climate change but then the pandemic hit during production and the level of ignorance from people was astonishing so they took inspiration of that as well. So in the end is about people denying science as a whole, it could be an asteroid, climate change, a pandemic, whatever, now days peopl have become stupid and the movie deals on how dumb humanity has become, we are all focused on politics, economy, technology, power and war that we just stopped listen to scientists, and the worst thing is that we don't even care. But I think the film is way more deeper than that, because it also has the message about what matter most and I got a sense that it is the people around us, our relationships and the animals who share this world with us, that's what matter most. And just being conscious about that, because one day this world is going to turn into shit and we just have to take a moment and appreciate that beauty as long as we are still here because is not going to last forever. And I love that, I love how the thinking normal people with education and common sense are the ones who died surrounded with the people they loved and the corporates and politicians died eaten by alien animals in a strange planet, I mean even the president forgot her own son and Karen's parents didn't want to take her back because they didn't want to hear politics. Those are the stupid ones, and that is a huge statement underneath the movie, I love that true message
If you haven’t noticed it was the government that was the villain in the movie not listening to the scientists who were treated as crazy conspiracy theorists. The government had other agendas that were deemed more important.
This film is painful. It hurts because the stupid sequences in the film are almost real. When there was a pandemic, there was a president who said that a shot of disinfectant would cure it. There were people who believed it. This president adopted nepotism. There's a social media that turns everything into a meme, and they've lost sight of what it's all about. People are more interested in celebrity gossip than politics or climate change. We have Hollywood and singers who are trying to turn the destruction of the planet into money. There are many tech CEOs who want to control everything with money. There are a lot of stupid characters and a lot of stupid things that happen in this movie, and it all shows how stupid America is today.

ive a breakdown for you: They didn't have the technology to land a few probes on an asteroid but they DID have the technology to build a cryo spaceship with power supply for 20000 years and land pods safely on another planet.
Well as the time is about now, approximately, clearly they/we don't have that technology but movie makers have learned that a movie where 'everyone' dies is bad box office. So they added this fantasy bit on. If you think about it the 'survivors' will all be eaten within about 15 minutes or so.
Another reason why it's a movie. That bit of the film was more of a joke than to be taken seriously. It showed the true gruesome fate of those trul evil villains that single-handedly murdered their own race
That's like comparing our ability for safe commercial trans Atlantic flights but questioning why we don't have the technology to safely and predictably fly through category 5 hurricanes, as opposed to avoiding them en route. Your comment, though entertaining and pithy, fails to acknowledge the complexity of those two situations. As a species we have the experience of successfully landing crafts to distant objects (and planets) with great accuracy. We have zero successful past experiences of thwarting extinction level Near Earth Objects threats.
Honestly, the way this movie portrays society, media, both corp and social, government, etc is an allegory for today. With so many denying science for what some talking head is telling them. It reminds me of how I felt after I watched Idiocracy.
No man, clearly this whole movie was just a wrapper to address the real point of this movie, which was someone charging you money for free snacks from a snack bar. More people need to be made aware of that problem.

Although there were so many subjects to force governments and companies to use clean technologies and energy sources to protect nature, nothing worked and the majority still kept going on their destructive lifestyle. However, some people got evolved and deeply concerned about it. However, in the last 20 years, there’s almost no global organization that is promoted by the mainstream media and reach billions of people. Instead of that, people got social media. Started consuming and demanding more and more. As a result, to see a totally natural area is almost impossible today. First time I've heard someone else mention that meaning relies on intelligence, and that there can be no meaning without it. I wonder if there is another philosopher who has proposed this?
What we know about Socrates, we know thanks to one of his 'students' Plato. The ideas from one of the greatest minds have been distilled through the brain of another important 'thinker' of our species. Socrates is famous for encouraging people to doubt everything and everybody - even themselves. 'The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing!' One of the reasons why he was killed. Language is nothing but made up sounds and signs. Words have a meaning because we give them a meaning, ideas have power because we allow them to have power. It's true our species is superior in certain fields, but we aren't worth more than all the other Earthlings. At the end, we are nothing but cells, part of a bigger organism ... simply experiencing itself. Space travel is such a enticing fantasy, yet our bodies can only survive on this planet and only under certain circumstances.
Except, I don't think that's quite right. Rather, meaning depends on something having the capacity to feel - a property shared by a great deal of the animal kingdom.

The movie was done strangely different to your normal end of the world movie. It really showed how the elite were more interested in profit even if the world got destroyed and their lack of care for humanity. They also had a back up plan to escape which I'm glad it ended well for the toe-rags they are. The film was more of a message about the elite class and how they see the rest of us which is what's happening now. But like this movie, they'll be no happy endings or likable characters and you'll still be alive to watch the credits roll. You weren't supposed to enjoy it. Anything that Brian Cox is involved in is so fascinating and super easy to understand. Regarding this film, I did quite like it, hearing him explain all of this is amazing!

A surprisingly accurate piece of social/scientific speculation. I think the events of "Don't Look Up" are spot on and we see it playing out in regards to the climate/energy/ecanomic crisis we are currently facing. The question is, "Will we learn anything?"
(Like Brian Cox said) The last line from Leonardo Di Caprio, "we really did have it all, didn't we", is so accurate and true. We do have everything, it just the fewest who actually appreciate it.
Dr. Brian Cox is simply.....brilliant...humble...centered...humane...I find myself always floating in his wisdom and in my most content embryonic intellectual state as he talks of life..time..space. What an asset to human mental evolution.

@@fedzalicious we already have instruments that see things via Ultraviolet, Infrared, microwave, and X-Rays...this is a curiously silly comment considering we have both the resources and technology to see nearly everything around us
This movie is more about the apathy of the human race, and our leadership than it is about climate change. You could replace the meteor with any global crisis and the message would still be both the same and relevant. Take covid for example, replace the meteor with covid, and it’s a shocking personification of what’s happening right now. It’s a brilliant movie. 10/10 from me.
Yes, it is more about how our collective reactions are structured and manipulated, mediated. And it is all about nowadays when humanity fails to rethink the economic model, which brought us to the environmental and climate crisis.
I disagree that it's about apathy. None of the characters were apathetic, they were motivated by different interests (for the Government and Corporations - greed and power). Their actions were deliberate and not born out of a disinterest in what was happening.
Brian is the teacher we all wished we had during any education we went through. It’s so soothing to understand complex topics the way it’s being laid down by Brian on your scientific plate.
There have been so many comparisons of the movie with Kubrik's "Dr. Strangelove", but after watching this video I can definitely say that Professor Cox with his constant smile sitting on a chair and talking about hypothetical catastrophic events is the one who actually look like Doctor Strangelove!

@@leosroar1988 The idea that Hollywood would have anything insightful to say beyond the institutional line is the joke. That they would be able to satirize anything when they can't mock power as it would be mocking themselves. From 17 agencies agree to the countless things people can't talk about on here for fear of being silenced, there is no "trust" in science because it has been proven fraudulent, easily corrupted institutions, bad models, and yes men aplenty who find favorable conclusions to push authoritarian ends. The failed predictions are not equivalent to a comet, just like this bug, it never was, and the managed response has clearly done more damage than any alternative.
I love how scientists even agree people who play football get payed way to much to just play a sport why can’t we put our focus on more important things
Don't get mad at the players. Get mad at the owners. If the players didn't demand those high paychecks to compensate for the damage they put on their bodies the owners would just pocket it all. I think tickets should be much cheaper, players should get paid more and owners make less to be honest. But that's not how capitalism works.
I'm certain that if Brian Cox was my science teacher at school i would have paid more attention in class, he has a way of explaining things that makes you want to pay attention to what he is saying.
I’m training to be a teacher and from my perspective and on the job experience… this movie which sort of reflects society also reflects a classroom. Adults are not so different to children - school teachers are basically too stressed and have lost the will from teaching people who are there involuntarily (which makes it even harder than a tv audience who voluntarily tune in). Long story short, people (especially kids) can be unfriendly if the teacher gets outwardly passionate about a complex subject for even a second. There are exceptional teachers who successfully use a seemingly non egotistical gentle demeanour such as Brian Cox though, however, I bet you even he wouldn’t last long with the daily grind of trying to engage people who are going to test boundaries because they are insecure prepubescents. Take it from me, the best way to engage someone is by not forcing whatever you want them to engage in - be soft and gentle like Brian cox, and don’t go crazy angry like in the Americanised tv interview scenes in this movie or the kids will never listen to you ever again.
@@kashatnick the fact that people didn't want to go along with relatively mild measures to protect the weak against a virus that can seriously harm them, even kill them in some cases, doesn't fill me with confidence for when a truly deadly virus breaks out. There are plenty of people like Brian Cox - although you can never have too many - the problem is the morons that run the show (politics and mass communication) and the education systems that get those morons into positions of power.
That's why this is one of my favorite movies. It's a commentary on so many aspects of our culture from our short attention spans, to how all of our institutions that claim to have our best interests at heart really only care about themselves. It's crazy how we think of ourselves as so much smarter than animals and yet we could still suffer the same fate of the dinosaurs.
@@madMARTYNmarsh1981 - I get that, and many people have that view of him. "The thing about Probabilities is that they are not Certainties". And that is exactly why most people ignore science and mathematics. They are either uncomfortable with what they can't understand or willingly choose to ignore it -- and ignore the subject matter experts.
To me it shows there are a lot of people that don't want to think a problem out to it's end. Especially when they instinctively know it interferes with their comfort and goals. The inconvenient truth. Climate change is not the real problem. Energy is. The climate has always changed. Carbon is not a problem. Everything alive is dependent on carbon and oxygen. We are running out of cheap energy. That is the problem that needs solving. Right now there is no profit in solving that reasonably. I am sorry but I did laugh at the ending. The emperor's clothing for all.
I get that with COVID. People talk about the chance of dying, be it 2%, 1%, 0.5%, 0.1%, whatever you even think it is, like those aren't huge odds, but they're not zero either. Why wouldn't you do *something* to reduce that chance, while low, not zero? It makes zero sense. Wearing a mask, is it really that bad of a thing if it gets you a bit of a lower chance of dying? Or getting a vaccine that lowers that chance by an order of magnitude, even more so if you're younger? Why wouldn't you do that?
I don't know which was more intriguing; the entire movie, or this breakdown and explanation. Bravo!

Brian Cox is simply brilliant, yes he’s obviously super intelligent but he explains things in a way that’s both interesting and understandable
How precise and concise one communicates is how to 'judge' your teachers
He’s a nice bloke who knows his stuff. However I can’t watch his programmes like Universe as it’s so incredibly dumbed down. He goes over and over the most basic stuff. I would like him to do a serious astronomy programme.
He is like Carl Segan in my opinion. His commentary is just awesome to listen to an I wish he was doing more of this now a days.
@@Wellorep He is no Carl Sagan. He got a D in maths and somehow got a place in university for being in a socialist pop band briefly. He became a professor - media (because on TV) and not physics - which is his field. Kind of an honourary position. His students rate him one of the worst at the uni department. He has done very little research and has not many papers published. None of it groundbreaking in any way, which is expected. To put him as one of the leaders in his field is wrong. He is also not an expert in climate.
He smiles too much
I love how passionate he is and could probably talk for hours and hours about all the predictions in this film and the whole storyline in great detail. His voice to me is the new David Attenborough, his way of talking and the cadence of delivery is so soothing that it draws you in. I've seen him live talk about black holes and the universe and he really does engage with every member of the audience. Watch the film, watch this breakdown then rewatch the film and you'll see something you hadn't before. With a little insight this shines and you take away something else and want to talk to people about it.
Keep up the fantastic work Brian and ill see you again in September in Sheffield!!!
Honestly can’t describe how refreshing it is to hear Brian cox ask whether or not we’re more interested in celebs than the preservation of our own plant, love that man
I find it really interesting. The reason trivial information or news is popular imo isn’t that it’s more interesting but that it’s easier. Stressing about the end of the universe is mentally taxing compared to celeb gossip. There’s a place for both of them (trivial stuff not celeb gossip) but currently the balance is out.
Of course he himself is a big celebrity and certainly enjoys his fame so there's that

It has nothing to with COVID ..the elites politictions are using covid for more Power n control .keep thinking the government cares about your health
@@starkiss77 The main villain was the capitalist, the government and ‘politic-ing’ was the main point of parody.

Brian Cox is one to admire. Someone has to turn the noise off long enough for ppl to hear the rain. People wont do it on their own.
You're so enlightened...
Not just America. Whole world I would say. Specially my country, India.

ive a breakdown for you: They didn't have the technology to land a few probes on an asteroid but they DID have the technology to build a cryo spaceship with power supply for 20000 years and land pods safely on another planet.
Well as the time is about now, approximately, clearly they/we don't have that technology but movie makers have learned that a movie where 'everyone' dies is bad box office. So they added this fantasy bit on. If you think about it the 'survivors' will all be eaten within about 15 minutes or so.
Well I mean they did land🤪😉💀
@@billgreen576 lol yea I figured they’d all get eaten too 😂😂
Another reason why it's a movie.

@@babyboi1119 I don’t know how old you are?
In 80s and 90s, some celebrities and global mainstream used to focus on world peace, pollution, population control, environment and such. That helped a generation realize that world sources are limited and we should focus on our environment.
Even in a country like Turkey, every way you look around you see a mine, a factory, buildings, highways and such.
It’s disturbing that majority still don’t realize that our lives depend on the nature. This makes me angry and most of the times sad. Yeah, the movie made me cry too 😢
Last year, Greece and Turkey had multiple wildfires. Turkish government claimed that they didn’t have fire planes while 12 of then laying in the capital city. The fires could be ended in a couple days but it lasted for 2 weeks! They just watched entire forests turned to dust. The temperatures jumped to 50 Celsius which has never been experienced in history. Eventually, it turned out that fire zones already determined as mining search areas🤦♂️ the fucking politics and some Canadian-Turkish company behind all this shit.
This makes me emotional about the surroundings I guess 🤔
the word you are looking for is arrogance, not ignorance.
'The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing!'
One of the reasons why he was killed.

Yes, it is more about how our collective reactions are structured and manipulated, mediated. And it is all about nowadays when humanity fails to rethink the economic model, which brought us to the environmental and climate crisis.
Take the opioid crisis for example, replace it with covid. Front page news, yet opioid deaths a much higher, why? There’s money in selling the vax
@@steveb9713 it’s because of how aggressively covid spreads not how many people it kills. Random comment though.
@@steveb9713 there's plenty of money in selling opioids as well
I disagree that it's about apathy. None of the characters were apathetic, they were motivated by different interests (for the Government and Corporations - greed and power). Their actions were deliberate and not born out of a disinterest in what was happening.
I went to two of his lectures, they blew me away.
I have never looked at the universe the same.
The movie was extremely accurate representing the U.S politicians.
Don't look up - I thought it was brilliant. i think anyone who didn't like it or thought it was rubbish has failed to see the point of the film - this also reflects human kinds response to climate change
and sadly humankind's ability to be distracted by trivia and tribal politics.
@@leosroar1988 we live in a society

Football is entertaining, science for the most part, isn't. End of story.
@@kerrysmith1899 Dumb people like watching dumb people kick a ball
Sometimes science can bore me but Brian cox always seems to intrigue me and I love hearing what he has to say about our wonderful universe
This is a wonderful film. The people that hate it are the exact caricatures the movie makes fun of. Idiocracy is literally happening.
Considering how we managed COVID as a species, it doesn't give me much confidence that we will do much better with an asteroid 😂
Well said 👍
yup - same here!
World is depopulated now, must be true if used as example, perhaps just to make a point unintended.
@@kashatnick the fact that people didn't want to go along with relatively mild measures to protect the weak against a virus that can seriously harm them, even kill them in some cases, doesn't fill me with confidence for when a truly deadly virus breaks out. Let alone something that will not affect us for some time until it is too late.
Dont worry, humanity has Elon Musk.
.. "Look up, Face nature in all its beauty and all it's terror". Widen your horisons. I love this guy. We need more those bright people, bright minds like Brian Cox to expand our horisons. Thank you Brian.
There are plenty of people like Brian Cox - although you can never have too many - the problem is the morons that run the show (politics and mass communication) and the education systems that get those morons into positions of power.
More like Brian Cox, less of the 'math is racist' crowd
That's why this is one of my favorite movies. It's a commentary on so many aspects of our culture from our short attention spans, to how all of our institutions that claim to have our best interests at heart really only care about themselves. It's crazy how we think of ourselves as so much smarter than animals and yet we could still suffer the same fate of the dinosaurs.
The movie is beautiful! We need part 2..
*Oh*
Lol
Such an underrated comment!
Duuuuuuude… nice one!
Oops no second chances, we now breed dumb people regression instead of evolution!
We are part 2. Part 1 was wiped out about 12 000 years ago.
I love me some NdT for sure, but Brian Cox is on another level. Listening to him is always phenomenal!
I'm not a fan of NdT, he seems too much like he's up his own arse about his intelligence. Arrogance is not appealing to me.
@@madMARTYNmarsh1981 - I get that, and many people have that view of him. There is definitely more of a celebrity status in him, more so than all other astrophysicists you see, and that further enhances that view people have of him and his way of explaining things. However, I don't mind any of that at all. The more ways there are to get science, truth, and knowledge out to the masses, the better.
I would love to see a SERIOUS collab between Brain Cox and Neil deGrasse Tyson on the opportunities and challenges of space exploration for the next 100 years and humanity’s current moment of crisis.
I have being waiting for Professor Cox to show up again !!! Thnx!!!
