    My dad had a church on skidrow--"Set Free Skidrow" we fed the homeless twice a day. One day, I was about 11 or 12, me and my younger brother were fighting outside of the church, and my brother lived with my dad there, I was just visiting. Well, this homeless lady knew my brother but she didn't know me, so she came up to me and started choking me, then my dad came around the corner and wrestled her off of me... I have many crazy memories from Skidrow

    Congratulations Wendell, what a fantastic transformation! There's a quote by Harold S. Kushner that reminds me of you, he says, "You don't become happy by pursuing happiness. You become happy by living a life that means something." You have definitely found meaning and have become a valued member of your community.

    I wonder about his kids. I wonder if he ever tried to get in touch with them and his wife. He seems like a good man that made some bad decisions and mistakes in the past. Its good that he's helping people now and trying to be a positive influence on others.

      agreed ... a college educated teacher with 4 kids decides selling and using drugs and being homeless is more fun that taking care of his family ... im glad he got clean and decided to help strangers eventually , but i wonder how his 4 childrens' lives were impacted forever because he just left them fatherless

    What a great interview. Can not imagine becoming so conditioned and comfortable with living in a tent on the streets that when you finally get real housing you remove the furniture and put up your tent inside. So Sad. May God continue to bless Wendell. Thank You Mark ☺

    • @gregorylagrange
      @gregorylagrange 4 роки тому +2

      That's an adaptation and a stumbling block. As bad as they can live, they can get to a point of being resistant to change even when set up in what's supposed to be the first steps to changing.
      They have a fear of changing. They want to do things like keep the tent just in case, because if they get rid of the tent and something happen and they're back on the streets, then they have to get another tent.

  • @hardworkingdiva
    @hardworkingdiva 4 роки тому +65

    The tent story is so true! I’ve had to help numerous clients get used to sleeping inside and in a bed again. They also had to get used to the quiet. I was floored when I first saw a tent up inside of an apartment. And it was their old tent too. It was cool though because we made a tradition of cleaning up the tents and donating them to other neighbors experiencing homelessness. But it takes time. Usually 6 months to a year to get them comfortable inside again. Some jumped right into it and had no issues at all, but some struggled.

    • @weeannie495
      @weeannie495 4 роки тому +12

      hardworkingdiva I was raised with 8 sibling a mum and dad. The house was very noisy and busy when I moved to my own house. I struggled with the silence and not having people around me. I had to get a divorce to get a room and bed to myself. True but funny too. I shared a bed with 2 other sisters I was at the bottom.
      We are all institutionalised or conditioned to our normal.

    I hope that opportunities continue to come this man’s way. He’s been through it and continues to smile. HeremInds me of a man I met while working in the prison system. He had already been there 25 years and had 15 left to serve. He actually saved my life one evening from another inmate. I never asked him what he had been convicted of because I feared that human nature would have me see him differently. I could have looked at his “jacket” but he was always so kind to me when we worked together in the infirmary and I trusted him more than other employees. I pray that we all get the opportunity to see beyond what people have done in the past.

    Reminds me of one of the craziest stories I ever heard, personally. I was in a bar, more than 10 years ago and it was just me and this trucker, middle of the day. Sitting at the bar talking. He was a paramedic back in his younger years. I asked him, "what was the craziest thing you ever saw as a paramedic?" He looked at me and said...(NOT verbatim as it's been years ago) "We had a call on a double fatality. One vehicle accident. The actual accident was minor. However, the female choked to death and the male had bled out." ..think it over.

    This is the type of person you should be interviewing...not undercover sex offenders like a few have been. This dude, Wendell, has a heart of gold. More people should be like him. Surely, there must be a way to get a smart, clear headed dude like this off of the street. I haven't finished the interview yet (so he may touch on it), but I imagine a part of him feels that he needs to stay on the street in order for his work to be effective. He probably thinks the people will be able to relate to him better if he is on the street. But I don't agree with that. This dude could still do his thing if he was living in an actual residence.
    .......LA is both the best and the worst place for the homeless. Yes, there are a lot of programs and things to do. But, with how insane the rent prices are, it is nearly impossible for these people to keep a place when/if they are ever able to get into one.

    This guy is amazing. What a thoughtful man. Isn’t it incredible what we can do when we ask. Ask and you shall have. How does the saying go? Jesus said, what you do for the least of them you do for me. What a world we would have if we concentrated on others. Wendell, you’re a good man!
