Nice job. I like that you made something in your house. It puts the project into perspective. At the end of this video I was wondering if there wasn't going to be a joke. You had me fooled until you came back and told it. I love those jokes.
I could if I had a fancy FLOOR SAW!!! Lol no really I been wanting one for few yrs now. Dam saw, hand tool, antique addictions...😢lol great vid James. Hardest working man in UA-cam!
Very nice, James. My former house (built about 1920) had a couple of wooden vent covers. As I recall, the gridwork was about 3/8 wide but an inch or more deep. And even then each cover had some damage. I think you were wise not to fasten the vent covers down. Good video.
I actually went looking for a curved saw a few years ago for making those folding book holders out of a single piece of wood. The japanese saw i wanted is called Azebiziki. You can get this at musical instrument making supply stores. I found a place in California that had the saw.... but it was during the first bit of covid so i wasnt going to rely on international shipping at that time (ditto for a Japanese source.) I ended up with a veneer saw from leevalley tools. I will be looking for a flooring saw in the future though since the veneer saw is a bit delicate for this work. Good video. The more hand tool work i do the less i enjoy pulling out my circular saw for home repairs, since a little plunge cut does it almost instantly as long as you have enough experience with the tool to not kill yourself.
I'm sure someone else suggested this, but you might want to add a metal mesh underneath to catch keys, Legos, and whatnot. But I like the design. Keep up the cool ideas.
Sorry I put that comment under the wrong post. LOL the funny thing is I sent your answer to the other guy. he was just as confused! to the question. I thought about doing that but the vent can be removed and I can also access it from the basement. so I chose not to add that or louvers.
Comment down below! Excellent job on it! The FLW reference....love his stuff. Would love to see you do another Wright themed project in the future like a lamp, chair, or table.
I actually used to do technical directing for the theater production that happened in the Frank Lloyd Wright Taliesin theater I did a good bit of study around his structures. Lots of fun history.
Will be very interested in how long this lasts. I built something similar but it was wafer thin and surface mounted. It didn't last nearly as long as I hoped it would. This inset application I know will last much longer!! Great video of a very tedious build.
Considering the state of the vent being replaced, did you consider a mitered half-lap joint, or a splined miter? I made a saddle square accidentally while setting up a make a number of repeated halving joints. The final test joint went together perfectly, it was square as well. It is now nearly 20 years old.
Gorgeous vent cover! I wonder how difficult it is to remove this for regular vacuuming out of pet hair, dust clumps, legos, etc. And if you wanted to remove it for regular cleaning, would you make it differently, like with a thumb notch, or some ither modification?
Very nice, it looks great! Unfortunately, a real wood floor really isn't a good option in my house with a slab. And I don't like engineered wood flooring.
Love this master piece. I was searching for vent ideas for the acacia flooring we just installed and had been contemplating what to design for it. How do you plan to adjust for air flow??
Again, great work and great video. But is this grid still easy to remove? If I had holes this size in my floor, they'd attract all sorts of small, valuable, and irreplaceable things that I accidentally dropped near them... SIM cards, small parts, wedding ring, you know.
Beautiful proportions and execution! If someone wants to educate an ignorant European - floor vents in ordinary house? What are they for? Heating? With air?
around 80% of the houses in the US are heated and cooled with Forced air systems. so there are large vents that run through the house and run hot and cold air to each room. Then the central unit also filters the air. but that is because most of the homes were made in the last 100 years and had the space built into the floors, wall and attics for the 300mm pipes
Ok, cool. Thanks for the comprehensive answer. I’m from Sweden and have only ever encountered waterborne heating in housing. New and old alike. Just to quench my curiosity, is it a method still being installed? Instinctively, it would seem as a less efficient medium to me? Though, my knowledge about those things are rudimentary at best…
Nice work. Only 4 year wait? Tell Mrs W, when a man says he'll do something, he'll do it. There's no need to nag him every 6 months about it!! (He's giving you time to forget it needs doing !!) PS. Not the best location to place a floor vent, fill up with outside debris! Blame the original HVAC guy
I do not do traditional woodworking. I use hand tools because they are fun. And then I will do a particular project in one or another woodworking tradition.
This video floored me
Do you need to vent about it?
Only 4 years... Wish I could get projects done that fast. I'm a decade behind...
Nice job! It's beautiful touch to the entryway. Thanks for sharing!
It's really nice that you do projects for the homeowner from upstairs xD
I am absolutely floored by how good that looks! LOL.
That is gorgeous! The design is just perfect. Great job!!!!!
I actually like the way the vent cover doesn't match the color of the floor. It helps highlight the artistry and craftsmanship that went into it.
Nice job. I like that you made something in your house. It puts the project into perspective.

Beautiful result! I think you should call this Knights of the White Oak kumiko.
Looks wonderful got me thinking of all those jobs that keep getting put off,and put off.😊
That turned out beautifully

Never knew I was missing a project like this until seeing your video! Great idea and great execution!
Excellent, James! The vent looks super cool. Bravo!
Love the design. I worked on a whole lot of craftsmen homes and many had custom designs for floor vents.
Nice to finally vent your issues
Might be the best looking floor vent I've ever seen. Great work. I might try something like this for my floor.
Looks great! Nice to see those Veritas planes hard at work on white oak.
That looks really neat! Both the final result and the process!
Really nice work! Maybe some mesh underneath to stop the inevitable key going down the hole?
There is a reason I kept it removable.
I have a flooring saw also. Haven't yet found a use for it.
That's gorgeous. Very classy.
Really beautiful work, James! Nicely done!!! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Knew you "wood" get to it e-vent-ually... ;) Looks gorgeous!
i’ll have to watch that first floor video! need to replace the carpet in my room
I'm sure someone else suggested this, but you might want to add a metal mesh underneath to catch keys, Legos, and whatnot. But I like the design. Keep up the cool ideas.
Send an Email to Jeff. you never know what he will come up with next.
@@WoodByWrightHowTo who is Jeff and what are you talking about?
Sorry I put that comment under the wrong post. LOL the funny thing is I sent your answer to the other guy. he was just as confused!
to the question. I thought about doing that but the vent can be removed and I can also access it from the basement. so I chose not to add that or louvers.
@WoodByWrightHowTo ha, that's a great little story. I should email Jeff to keep this confusing story going.
nice look. would it be more practical to have a removeable center grid to help fetch those occasional items that drop down the vent?
This one is removal. You can either pull it up or because you can get in the basement push it up from underneath.
What an eventful project 😁
Looks really nice. You do amazing things with hand toold.

Interesting. In the south our HVAC vents are on the cieling. My grandfather built furniture for Frank Lloyd Wright. It is cool to see his tags there.
That's far more common there isn't a full basement. In that case the HVAC unit is usually in the attic.

I made a saddle square accidentally while setting up a make a number of repeated halving joints. The final test joint went together perfectly, it was square as well. It is now nearly 20 years old.
I had thought of making a more structural joint, but there was no need so I just stuck with the easier rout.
@@WoodByWrightHowTo Thanks.
That looks so good
Where you pouring somthing else with the epoxy or? It looks like you mixed up a whole litre to use a tiny bit :)
I only mixed one pump of each it was maybe two or three tablespoons total
Gorgeous vent cover! I wonder how difficult it is to remove this for regular vacuuming out of pet hair, dust clumps, legos, etc. And if you wanted to remove it for regular cleaning, would you make it differently, like with a thumb notch, or some ither modification?
I can put in a T bar and pull it. Or I can go in the basement and move the run and push it up.
@@WoodByWrightHowTo Sounds straightforward. Thanks for the ideas.
You stubborn? No way. Cool build!
Glad you could vent, you seemed pretty floored...
I'll see myself out lol!
Very nice, it looks great!

Love this master piece. I was searching for vent ideas for the acacia flooring we just installed and had been contemplating what to design for it. How do you plan to adjust for air flow??
I usually just leave this one open, but there is a flow Valve in the duct line if I need to.
Thanks for sharing.
How can it sit if you stand ? 🤔
I just need to vent a minute. Lol. Great video.
I have a bent and broken sheet metal vent that looks just like yours. My vent would have to be 3/8" thick, would that be strong enough?
That would be a bit on the thin side. But you can change the pattern to be whatever you want. The more sticks you put in the stronger it is.
That really came out nice!
That’s how my stuff fits too, always one and done lol
What I would do differently is is to have the long pieces on top so they go along with flooring direction.
Nice Job!
Beautiful!!!

yes. that is why I did not glue it in. I can eather pull it up with a T bar or push it up from the basement.,
Un artista von la madera
looks great,
Great job! How many hours work did that take to make? Sure looks nice!
That was about 3-4 hours.
For the algorithm!

A power drill? Spray on poly? No BLO and paste wax? Am i in the bizzaro world? Lol
LOL I still use White oak.
Comment down below. Great looking vent. Now how many more are you going to have make?
LOL just this one. Thankfully it's the only floor vent in the house. The rest are wall vents or baseboard vents.
Nice!
Anything you add to wood is an accent to your projects or someone else
You said Vert in the title, did you mean Vent?

Title says verti. I thought you were making a vert ramp for skateboarding
Nice project. Good to see you rushed this one.

Een vent maakt een vent.
LOL I like that one!
That floor isn't green at all.
No it is not.
Why the PVA? PVA is a modern glue and was never apart of traditional wood working.
