I escaped to the room as my pc is busy installing a large quantity of things and I had to much ice cream. Super excited to see this video aaaand I’m starting to get sleepy. Booooo! Lol! I swear I can stay up for this, the only one I’m unfamiliar with is green beetle(?) but I’m going to be checking everybody’s video out. This is an awesome build.
A thing of beauty. I love the Purple Heart Project. Fantastic. Thank you all involved in this project, we veterans appreciate it more than words can say. Cheers.
Beautiful plane and a great showing of what you can do when you collaborate with others. All those personal touches each of you adds that no one person could do as effectively on their own. Much WOW.
Comment on the short you made about a strop - on wood or free-handed. As a shoemaker, and, as did all barbers for ages, the leather strop had a metal grip in one end with a leather tie attached, which you tied to the end of a solid support - like the work bench. The other end was shaped as a sort of handle. One would grip the handle and pull the strop tight, and then begin stropping. Additionally, there was sometime a piece of thick waved canvas the same shape as the strop, that one would turn to the front/top and use to remove any final burrs. Just FYI, thanks.
OK, so she started out as a plain plane, but now she's anything but plain, even though she is still a plane. That is a beautiful result. Makes me think of proverbial swans and ducklings.
Certainly on the subject of Purple Heart Project, you and Rex need to do a collaboration with Rob Cosman. This is a gorgeous piece! Excellent work to all contributors!
@@kz.irudimen I'd hardly consider him a "pusher". He demonstrates that you don't need to spend several hundred dollars on a Lie Nielsen when you can get very acceptable performance from overseas variants. I always strive to buy American...but I simply don't make Lie Nielsen money and if that's the type of tools he "pushed" his videos would depict a substantial barrier of accessibility to the craft of woodworking reserving it only for people who have significant disposable income.
I'd also like to add that Rob's video on hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery was absolutely priceless - I went from never making such a joint to building a display table for my mother with 16 exquisitely clean and snug mortise and tenon joints.

Is there a way to do things like this if u don't have a vice or bench???. The only space I have to work is on a table outside and I have a wood stump from an old tree with a belt over it to use as a clamp for small things. If there is, can u make a video please showing diff ways to hold down pieces so they can be sawed and chiseled.... Thxs
Where there is a will there is a way. There are lots of interesting ways of workholding without a vice. But you may want to think about making a bench on bench. It's basically a small bench top you can store away but you can take it out and put it on top of a table or countertop to do woodworking on. It is all possible to do without the bench but the bench really makes everything so much easier
@WoodByWrightHowTo What I mean is the dark wood layer in the knob lines up with the middle layer of the tote, & so it's centered & parallel with the sides of the plane, perfectly. I envision myself tightening down the knob only to have that center line go askew. Did you set the knob that way in the photograph for visual interest (& OCD)? The product shot looks so perfect!
In making the wooden blank I made it the final thickness and made sure that there was the same amount of light wood on either side of the dark wood. And then was just careful when trimming it down not to take anything off of the outside faces
Pretty amazing work, James! It turned out beautiful! 😃 You know, that reminds me of something... Once I bought a needle file set from China, but when it arrived... They weren't files, but rasps! Hey, i'm a long time viewer that is finally able to return to woodworking! I have been slowing re-buying the larger shop tools I had to unfortunately get rid of a while back. (example: just got a 38" wooden lathe today for a b-day present(so, so, so excited lol)) I was wondering if you had an opinion on what are a couple tools that you suggest I should make now that I have a functioning woodworking shop. skill levels needed are not really an issue either. I made a table saw sled, i threw together a crappy little router table, i set up a corner work brench with wrap wround pegboard, ect. maybe you have some suggestions on some hand tools I could make and kill some time with? i would really appreciate it, I need some small projects atm, i'm going through a low time in life right now.
usually my answer is make the tools you don't have but would soon need. a hand router is a good one. you could make some hand screw clamps. you can never have enough of those.

James,I have one of these with a too worn sole and therefore a too large blade mouth. Can you recommend someone who can male a sole bottom panel to turn it back into a user not just a looker? Thanks, Jeff
You can just glue on a strip on the bottom and make a new soul. But that might make an interesting video. Send me an email and that might be something I can do.
How can we purchase more than one raffle ticket? Would love to win the plane but want to support the cause even more. I love what you guys do and even more when your kindness and generosity helps others. Fan for life good sir.
Seriously, though, I have never had luck with sandpaper and tight inside curves. The sand surface breaks and the edges dig into the surface. Am I just using crap paper, or is there a technique I'm missing?
Sandpaper can't give you a sharp surface unless you have a hard backing on it. I use the sandpaper here to show where a surface has sharp points so I can smooth them out with a file.

Does it have each of the creators signature/mark on each respective part? I think that would be great to have on the plane
