- Simple guide by a Pro - Learn how to apply Drywall Tape Over Flats, Butt Joints and Corners.
As professional tapers, we apply a thin coat of compound with the taping process, saving the contractor time, material and unnecessary sanding. Best results are achieved with three coats of compound. As a cost savings measure two coats maybe preferred in areas such as the garage and occasionally the basement, based on the limitations of the project.

Thanks for the video and for trying to show us how to do this. I find many people who are experienced drywallers who are doing how-to videos, jump over stuff they know very well, like how to hold the tools how to put pressure on the knife, and how much mud to put on, also how to pull. These are things that are not instinctive for we the inexperienced. It would be great to have some kinds of closeups and slow explanations. as with many drywallers, you are going very fast for me to follow. And I[m speaking as someone who has done a few walls and corners and am now dealing with all the problems of inexperience combined with most drywallers making it look so easy they don't think to explain the fine details.
This guy is a pro! Say whatever you want about his style but I bet he's made a great living.
The butt joint tearing thing, you can tell he knows what hes doing. sometimes doing it the more correct way seems a bit weird but that is just because most don't actually do it the best way, instead they do it the way that speeds things up which is not always synonymous with top quality.
This is like watching golf on tv. Afterwards i think i can shoot under par.
I have never seen paper pealed back on but joints, usually I use a razor and v out the joint for loose or cut drywall or paper, then when done pre fill all with hot mud before taping. Doing prefill prevents cracks on joints.

Love those videos: fast, direct, well done. And Canadian;) Thank you!
One of the best how to videos on UA-cam
Thanks for this helpful video. Its actually more simple then i thought.
He's a very good teacher he explains himself well with his examples you could tape and mud after watching his video !!!
thanks Henry.
Excellent video. Subscribed.
Never saw the peeling thing though !??
I did this for nearly 20 years though mostly machine taping and this is showing good technique though I would never have peeled back as much as that just the worst of it,put simply on price work when you need to do hunderds of meters you just dont have the time.
Video is meant for homeowners with no experience, we will be posting advance techniques in future for fast passed tapers who want to step a notch. The speed is increased by 80%.
Excellent video. Very helpful and much appreciated sir!
Thank you.
Awesome video. Super helpful. Thanks for posting.
Thank you.
Cousin you are amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You're awesome brother
you make it look so easy great video
easy to understand video, thank you.
I honestly have never seen anyone peel like that
Dan Marsh me neither
Same
Sometimes you have to, if the butt is uneven, its easier to remove the paper.
If it's a real shitty butt joint, I'll just take my knife and bevel both edges. Gets rid of that brown "burr". Tearing the paper face seems extreme to me, but hey, I've realized there's many ways to end up with the same result.
so only needed if uneven, not every time
If I'm an idiot then I guess that's a good thing because I've been working for the same company for over 20years and never had a callback to fix any of my tape joints

Well done. You make it look so easy. Lesson learned.
this guy is a Got damn drywall Jedi
Awesome video... to the point...thanks
crazy skills. you make it look easy!
Thank you
not supposed to pull the paper the brown paper bubbles under the tape
The reason we peel butt joints is due to the bad drywall cuts on edges that create bubbles once you apply mud and tape on it. I suggest using sheetrock 90 before a tape is applied for quality.
how to drywall im stuck at an angle i can't really fit my blade into...is there a trick to doing very very tight angle?....or do i just caulk it?...help😔
how to drywall but there's a wall right there so a good drywaller would have gave you factory edges to tape and put the cut in the corner to avoid that , aside from that great video
XxSnagGod24xX right ... never in all my years
XxSnagGod24xX every thing in this video looked so good until that... I've never seen anybody peel back the paper like that and if I had to do that on every butt joint I come across so much time would be wasted. If ANYTHING, all you have to do is snap your blade off nice and sharp and run it on a shallow angle on the butts of the sheets (to create a v sort of groove). Gives you a clean edge and takes off all of the shit that comes with a bad butt joint (such as ripped back paper and fuzzies like what this guy is purposely doing)... Backfill Or just backfill it and tape it and feather it out without wasting time
Nice video, though I do wish the last minute on the 3-way corner wasn't sped up-I couldn't really see your technique.
Wowsers! Thank you!
Never seen paper teearing done before.. odd I bet this makes easier level 5
Thanx man. 👍
Awesome video thank you so much for the info!!!!
When I pull mud across peeled paper, i get trash unless i trowel like a quarter inch
Awesome tips. Thank you!!!
I've been drywalling for over 20 years I've never appealed the paper like that before that's just setting you up for disaster later
@HONESTO UNO I've never had an issue of mud separating from brown drywall paper, in Canada we use most all-purpose mud for taping and finishing. There is a lot of glue in all-purpose. You might have an issue if you used a topping mud. The key to success is to use lots of mud behind the paper. The flatter you butt joint is the easier it is to hide! Hope that helps!
Excellent 👍
So fast very professional
👍👍👍👌❤️
Actually it's not fast
Ok, so how soon are you available?
thanks alot. Very useful.
wish I wouldve found this earlier
I tape for first time my son room only 2 walls and I take 3 hours.
Wtf ,you so to fast to taping you are the best video i see broo.
thank you
I have never seen anybody pull the top layer of paper of the drywall. It's counter productive because the brown paper will usually bubble once mud is applied. Sure..Run your six inch blade over such joints to make sure they are smooth... but never peel that paper off. And why are you using paper tape on the butt joints. You would be far better served to use fiber tape, as paper tape tends to bubble and is mush more difficult to use. Paper tape is for corner joints. That's why the paper is creased.
John Shader ?
Paper tape bubbles when there is not enough mud behind or its too dry. When applying paper tape by hand its best to wet the tape first with water. It helps to prevent bubbling.
Just to be sure I am not missing any details, after the taping part is done, and everything you have done in the video is dry then you can proceed with painting correct? I tried to use the paper tape once before (without any prior experience mind you,) and my tape still showed through when I tried to paint over it. I assume this is due to rookie errors, or is there something I have to do before I paint over that?
Thank you =]

So why didn’t you peel anything when you did a horizontal butt joint? I’m confused by the peeling is all
Peeling is only required when the edges of the butts are damaged. Just to be safe we peel them all. In terms of horizontal flats they should not be peeled at all costs unless damaged.
I thought maybe you would use a sealer on the paper then mud over that?
I've never had a issue mudding over brown paper with all purpose
Or you could just plaster the whole room twice as quick and do a solid job
jonty jt expensive and really dusty, that’s a lot higher end than most people can afford
What does he mean? Overlap? Overlap what, how?
Hey man the way you do is so damn good . But i have question . Whem i apply mud and then on top that paper after whyl it gets bumps like air bubles under paper and looks bad . After it dry its imposible to apply second coat of muc couse of air bubles under tape . I dont know how to explane you better as am not english . But it would be nice if you could make a video or something 😊
its from not having enough mud on the wall when you apply your tape. Also working the tape into the mud from the center out helps.
What brand and type of mud are you using??
exellent presentation nice work
If I am replacing a wall with new drywall, but leaving the existing popcorn textured ceiling, how do I mud the ceiling joint and not mess up the texture on the ceiling? Do I need to tape and mud It? Can I just leave it and then caulk the seam before I paint?
Your job might be done now but you can by reveal tearaway bead for the purpose or caulk with work pretty good as well!
This would be great if it wasn`t sped-up.
Nice vid

Bad ass!!
nice vid but I have some questions1. Instead of peeling the paper off why don't you fill with plaster and use the back of your knife handle and run it up and down the butt joint a couple of times. this does 2 things, poor sheet cuts are folded back and screws edge breaks are smoothed out.2. why don't you go full height with the corner tape.3. if you hold the tape in your left/right hand when taping it wouldn't be twisted when you use it.4. why do you have so many screws in the middle of the sheet, don't you use glue. 5. why do you use a 6" knife to lay on your first coat its slow and messy6. your internal corners, why don't you use a 3" for starters then move up in size as you put more coats on.
What type of mud are you using ? Would pre- made joint compound work the same ?
I use a powder compound mixed to suit my style usually a 150 min. I find premix takes to long to dry in our conditions ( its winter here now) . different country's different rules, I use the gib.co.nz guild lines.
Do you apply tape over all the screws too??
No. Just mud
no
Why would the person who was boarding end up with with 2 butt joints 16" from eachother? Thats a bad layout! Sometimes it cant be avoided, but a wall that size, theres no excuse.
Its rather simple sometimes when you cant install drywall ur self you hire people who dont know what they are doing... and down the road you end up fixing the mistakes.

Why does nobody explain what type of mud and why they use it!
I use: Usg Sheetrock Plus 3 Pre-Mixed Lightweight All-Purpose Drywall Joint Compound.
If I am patching or repairing a wall, I use: Sheetrock DuraBond 45 Natural Joint Compound 25 lb, sand the area then follow up with the Plus 3 for the last 2 coats.
CGC white/beige or Certainteed white/beige is your best bet in Canada.
I am sure it is a called a hawk in every country and you should be using a pan you have no clue that seam now has no paper to hold fasteners
You know that drywall is just layers of paper and gypsum right? Heck, you could remove all the paper and still tape it and not have issues. In regards to the hawk, many tapers still use the hawk including myself.
I was looking for help but nvm lmao I know more

which way should the tape fold go? towards the wall, or away from the wall. e.g. if its folded in a v, does the v touch the wall or go away from the wall
Alexander Fagard how is there more than one option for an inside corner?
Alexander Fagard are u serious
Never ever tear paper, bad advise.

Dude, this is not this easy. Fml... Lol
dude dont fast forward. for people who has no idea how to apply the mud and tape, wont know how is done. so again, dont fast forward.
Mesh tape would be needed not paper tape? Paper tape is for the corners? Wow can't believe you posted this video?
The video is for homeowners who wish to learn basic taping. In terms of Mesh its not longer used due to its "low quality".
how to drywall sir not sure where you get your info. Also I have never heard of anyone ripping the dry wall before taping. This whole video is just mis leading. There is no other video like it trust me....
duh. mesh? that's for holes. corners do cheap tape. I'm a girl and I know this ? damn. 😬
The Joint is guaranteed to crack using mesh. Mesh is for veneer plaster.
