Northwestern Wisconsin can never be forgotten especially Mellen Minong Bad River trip. We started with three and came back two. It was all Milwaukee Larry 's idea he had gone on a hike along the railroad to see glowing foxfire shrubbery. We stopped at the bar ,Larry went in and never came out. We had limited $ so after waiting a reasona ble time we two continued on to our bear hunt, (my idea) no bears slighted. I woke up Bill with a smallmouth bass 3 inches away. We headed back south, we idled through Mellen in a '74 ford wagon with door flaps, leaky gas tank, almost no reverse when the forward was working. on the way to minne, withno larry, goodbye larry. We got back with no $ and a gallon to spare. Larry was sleeping off his foxfire. Later on at Dunwoody Industry institute, Larry's explained how his friends from wayback were still in the bar, he crashed in a church, hitchhiked to Ashland, called his Dad for busfare . Life returns to the normal routine on Monday
I remember that day. And yikes, it was 53 YEARS AGO? We had a big todo about it, being in Arizona. I am really not that old! Just my body is. And all you young whippersnappers who are reading this, just know that just because we may look like something from the crypt, many of us are 20 somethings stuck in this deteriorating vessel.
I’m pushing 60. I resemble your statement in fact just talking about the subject with an old friend/coworker from 30 years ago tonight over a beer. I said I quit aging at about 25-30 inside. Cheers! Happy Springtime.
We lived in Arizona from 2014 to 2020. We now live back in east Texas. Originally from Indiana. We made good friends with a couple from Oshkosh that wintered in Az. In July we are driving from Texas to Wisconsin to visit them and see Wisconsin for the first time. Hope the weather is better than that when we are there. Lol. I found you because of my interest in the Southwest. Sad to see you left it but I guess I’m going to learn something new where ever you take me. I enjoy your style of venture and education!👍
If you go out to eat in Oshkosh Roxy's and Christianos Pizza are two good places. If you go to the west side of Wisconsin drive Highway 14 between LaCrosse and Madison, you will go through the area called the unglaciated and can see many bluffs and Amish farms.
@@SightseeingSally Good for you! You'll have to return for nicer weather, the Clear Lake Park is gorgeous, with Clear Lake surrounded by pines.... it's so cool and quiet. Good memories. My grandfather did a LOT of work in and for the Clear Lake Park. His legacy will endure for generations... my family lives in Reeve, an even smaller, quieter hamlet 9 miles east of Clear Lake, and I grew up with both maternal and paternal grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc, living right next door. What a great way to grow up. 🥰
I did know Clealake Wisconsin was birth place of founder of Earth Day. We have a town of Clear Lake in northern California.. We should all be involved in doing things to preserve our planet! Didn't know Grimes was such a good ballplayer. Wow there is a Clear Lake there also. The town of Clear Lake is near the actual Lake here as well. Didn't know Gaylord Nelson was mayor also. The bandstand is pretty impressive! Thanks for pointing out the historic buildings on main Street. Love that building that used to be black Smith shop!! Thanks for sharing your visit to Clearlake Wisconsin!
I’m a FIB, Living 11 miles South of the Cheddar Curtain my entire life. Every happy memory of vacations and weekend getaways to the wonderful state of WI is reaffirmed every time that we are able to go back. The PEOPLE always nice, down to earth, genuine is icing on the cake to the most gorgeous streams and valleys of the Western Driftless area, to the beautiful lakes, Big Green Lake our Favorite. Bayfield WI and onto the ferry boat to Mandolin Island. Milwaukee on the Lake, Madison on the Lakes! Even the border town of Beloit WI has become a reason to visit. I’ve been trapped in IL due to family stuff. Someday I’m heading just North for good.
I’m also a FIB living in Eau Claire since 1983. Moved here all by myself and didn’t know a sole. I have no regrets that 42 years later I feel so lucky to be living here rather than the Chicagoland suburbs today. Who knew it would get so bad there. I also have two guys I grew up with one is in Wisconsin and the other lives in Indiana. None of us want to go back from where we came.
This is awesome! This is my hometown and now where I live/work! I work at Specialty Coating Systems and I giggled when you mentioned big birds feather! To add to that, did you know parylene (what we coat our products in) was made/invented in Clear Lake in a basement?! I believe it was the basement of the town hall. Also I was surprised/excited you gave a shoutout to a relative of mine: John Moochy! Super cool! ❤️
Glad y'all got home safely. Weather been weirder. Finally I figured out where them cheese heads are from, that was cool 😎. I got a lot of family in Wisconsin. Thanks for sharing.
I was pleasantly surprised to find this video about my home town. I graduated from the old High School you showed back in 1987. It's a small town, but I like it. Anyway, when you mentioned bratwursts, I was reminded that the local market, Nilssen's Grocery, has won awards for their smoked meats, and have quite the bratwurst selection. I'm glad you stopped by my sleepy little town.
I loved this video of my home town. Very proud of Gaylord Nelson and so glad that you are giving him the credit he deserves. Grimes, the Paulson Brothers and Clear Lake the Movie are all special. Please try to find and watch the movie. Very cool cult classic that hasn't found its audience.
Absolutely..what's not to love about Wisconsin. Coming from the St Croix river boarder side, a different story on the east boarder. That aside, wild nature, getting chased by wild Turkey, having a White Tail deer trying to mate with your automobile at the last second. Lol. Gotta love the room to breath.💖
Clear Lake was an amazing place to grow up. I actually got to meet Gaylord Nelson when he helped my elementary school plant a prairie next to it. Also the movie isn't great 😂
Hi Sally, ive just noticed how Americans eat beans on toast….they put the beans on the plate at one side, then on the other side of the plate they put the toast..they eat the beans with the fork, then eat the toast with the other hand.. (uk people always put the beans on the toast ,then use a knife and fork to eat it…)
I will be sure to find the little town next time I’m up that way fishing, been visiting from Chicago area since the 60’s! My great Aunt and Uncle retired in Webster In 1967
Howdy from New Mexico! Since you are back in the Midwest... A great spot is the Indiana Dunes (at the end of HWY 49) at sunset as you watch the sun go down behind Chicago. The Best times are March/Sept. It's a very surreal site and quite beautiful. 😘
Hi Sally, I love your channel. I’m wondering if you have ever considering sightseeing Palmyra. We have many roots in Wisconsin, including Beloit, Eagle Janesville and more. But the origin seemed to us to be Palmyra. (most of us are long time settled in Peoria, Illinois now). I’d love to meet you and Marty in Palmyra sometime, I know there are some pretty interesting historical sites there. Anyway, keep up the great work, and try to stay warm this winter. Best, Pat
Very interesting history of a small town I had never heard of. Early history of clear Lake is similar to early history of some small towns here in the Pacific Northwest-lots of logging and farming. Good video. Thanks you, Lynn and Steve
HAppy belated EArthDAy to You! I am a Wisconsin native and proud of Wisconsin's ties to the founding of Earth Day. As soon as you said "Clear Lake" I knew what this episode was going to be about. Good job digging up the twins who made cannons and other tidbits.
I’m all for Earth Day, I went into composting professionally. But let me tell you how damned annoying it was attending Gaylord A Nelson Educational Center…MY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL there. What a mouthful. I adore Clear Lake, it will always be home!
Did you see that papercliping at the hardware store on main street ? Poke County was home sweet home. What county you in as it's been mentioned "your up norte" LOL Ha ha Karnack the great Died with Johnny. 😢
I think being aware & caring about our earth is a good thing! Those who make fun of those who want to be good stewards , just seem unappreciative of how great the earth is! I’m GLAD I’m not one of those …
Burleigh Grimes was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1964 and his first wife died of a heart attack in August of 1964. Hope you guys stay safe and healthy.
I remember the Santa Barbra Oil spill well, I was 16 when it happened, and I was already conscience of the environment. In Seal Beach, California back in the 1960s you were lucky to have a half mile visibility on a good day. We were so close to the shore you could hear the fog horns on a regular basis, as they helped guide ships in the Long Beach area. Gaylord Nelson was a visionary who understood the changes he had witnessed over his life were not sustainable. He was a true visionary, a truly a unique and tremendous voice of sanity in a time of deep insanity. Seriously I owe the man a debt of thanks. Then to see his humble tombstone tells you a lot about the quality of the man, and what he held dear in this world. Thanks Sally!
Cool video Sally! Thanks for the history lesson on Clear Lake and it’s Earth Day connection. I need to visit Wisconsin soon, it seems to have so much history.
I liked the Movie “Clearlake Wisconsin..” not because it was a Real Good Movie, per se, but I’m a fan of Micro-budget thrillers and horror, and it was a lot of fun (as long as you are not expecting too much)… In fact, that Movie is the reason I stopped by and checked out your video. It was nice to see. I enjoyed your video as well.
I need some beer cheese and some smoked cheese please and thank you. Use to jump off at red granite. Check it out. Got some history. I've been following senator Ron Johnson. Very interesting. Use to manufacture/weld stainless steel for food processing in Wisconsin.
Hell yeah! I love all my little western Wisconsin towns. I wish they were all forgotten. But the transportation department keeps messing around giving us roundabouts and tearing up main Streets.
I believe there is a bed and breakfast in Clear Lake, WI that is an exact replica of the Andy Taylor home from the Andy Griffith TV Show. People pay to sleep in Andy’s, Opie, or Aunt B’s room.
Antigo sucks, our unofficial town (yeah, town not city), saying (which everybody says and knows more than the elicited saying) is come on vacation and stay on probation. Town if full to the brim with drug addicts, liars, and cheats. So if you don't want to be stuck here or arrested due to some random drug addict lying and the cops lying, too. Dont go to antigo.

Hi, Sally and Martin. I always thank you for your video. Also, Your video is so interesting! Best wishes to you and happy the week. ❤
Thank you kindly! Hope you are having a good week, too.
Well, Sally, you are just adorbs! Thanks for the trip, and I'll be tuning in again. Cheers from Middleton, WI.

I grew up north of Clear Lake in Hayward. My uncle Neil was a school teacher in Clear Lake. Thanks for a great video.
Neil Griffin?
I had friends who lived in Mercer, Wisconsin. Miss going up there to visit.
Ah! My hometown!! I graduated HS there in 1988. Thank you for this😍!! Clear Lake is definitely a quiet hamlet... it was a fabulous place to grow up.
