Bigger history, sure, but I don't think Wilt would've fit in the Celtics culture. Especially early on in his career, Wilt put up crazy numbers but could never bring his team all the way, which is the complete opposite from the mentality Red was fostering in Boston. It was only after Wilt started sacrificing his own individual numbers that he finally won a championship, so it's only then that he might have been a good fit.

He only played until 92 out of the duty he felt to keep going after losing Len. To think we have guys playing today Like Joel Imbiid who is making 53 million dollars to sit around because he doesn't want to get hurt. Larry make 25 mill his entire career and he gutted out the last 4 years wearing a back brace every day just to play....He made half in his career of what Imbeed is making this year alone

The Boston Celtics was founded in 1946 and are commonly regarded as the most successful team in NBA history, with only its western rival the L.A Lakers up there.
The Celtics hold the records for most NBA championships won, with 18 titles (1957, 1959-1966, 1968-1969, 1974, 1976, 1981, 1984, 1986, 2008 and 2024) including 8 straight title reign of the 60's is safely IMPOSSIBLE to best in the modern NBA + 11 NBA Eastern Finalists. Celtics have most recorded wins of any NBA franchise!
Two eras that are defined by Celtics with the 1958-1969 era of Bill Russell & Sam Jones and the 1979-1992 era of Larry Bird, Kevin McHale & Robert Parish still are well spoken of till this day.
    The franchise have over its lifetime also honored most players by having officaly retired 23 player numbers;
    00 - Robert Parish
    1 - Walter Brown
    2 - Arnold Auerbach
    3 - Dennis Johnson
    5 - Kevin Garnett
    6 - Bill Russell
    10 - Joseph White
    14 - Robert Cousy
    15 - Thomas Hensohn
    16 - Thomas "Satch" Sanders
    17 - John Havlicek
    18 - David Cowens
    19 - Donald Nelson
    21 - William Sharman
    22 - Charles Macauley
    23 - Frank Ramsey Jr.
    24 - Samuel Jones
    25 - K.C Jones
    31 - Cedrick Maxwell
    32 - Kevin McHale
    33 - Larry Bird
    34 - Paul Pierce
    35 - Reginald C. Louis
Since 1947, the Celtics have only missed the NBA play-offs 17 times, with there most noticble down-era being between 1996-2001 where they had 6 straight years of play-off drought.

Red Auerbach was the Boston Celtics and more. He was one of the three or four most influential personalities in the whole game. If it wasn't enough that he won a record 16 championships, he re-invented the game in every way until Sunday. He also mentored and raised up a bunch of coaches and GMs who had great careers, won championships, and raised up more coaches and GMs.
And, if it weren't for a couple of mishaps, he would have won MORE championships.

Ainge was taking Tatum no matter what, but capitalized on everyone being hyped on Fultz.. Which kinda sucks for Tatum, because he's obviously the #1 pick from that draft and his salary would of been higher, let alone forever being known as the #1 pick...

Imagine Len Bias and Reggie Lewis into the late 90s/early 00's passing the torch to Kobe?

  • @broadstreet21
    @broadstreet21 Місяць тому +1

I had been crunching scenarios and considered...
What if Len Bias actually lived?
Long story short, Bias would emerge as Jordan's main individual rival. More importantly, the Celtics win maybe four more championships. But the rest of the league takes action to compete with the Celtics, especially the Lakers and Bulls, both of whom win chips in the 90s. It's a clash of the titans that captivates greater fame and following for the whole NBA, fuelling them with greater revenues.
By the time Bias retires in around 2000, the Celtics will have missed out on drafting Walker or Pierce. Instead, they wind up with a higher draft pick in 2003, and a shot to get Kaman, Wade, Bosh, Anthony, or... James. Depending on what they do from thenceforth, they might win a championship before 2010, and I wouldn't count them out.
(And this scenario happens without Reggie Lewis).
Speaking of which, what if Reggie Lewis lived?
This is where things get dicey. Even with Lewis, the Celtics need a few things to go right to win a chip. By the mid 90s, the team's core was retiring. Their best bet is that Lewis and Radja pair up, give them a duo to build around, and just maybe, they win one in 1994. But it won't be the same realignment of the entire NBA that Bias would have triggered.
And lastly, what if they did draft Kobe Bryant?
Well this one is also no guarantee. For starters, they would need to hire a coach who could teach Bryant the Celtic way, to let go of self and become part of the team. Maybe if they hired Don Nelson? And they still need to draft the right players to come around Bryant. Plus, I highly doubt they ever sign Shaquille O'Neal in free agency. One thing for sure, it's not the Lakers winning three championships in the early 2000s (although they might win one with Divac and O'Neal).

The greatest coach and gm ever and friend to bill russell who career would not had been as successful if it wasn't for red (not saying russell wouldn't had a great career) but without red he wouldn't had won 11 titles without him and his guidance, a jew who understood russell and his beliefs and told him them that, he was important to the team and everybody else was. Also let's give walter brown credit to, because he let red do his thing, the man got cousy and traded chuck share a 6'11 center (now you would think someone that tall would dominate the game of basketball with ease, according to the casual or intelligent nba and basketball fan...nah, walter dukes didn't dominate also and he was 7 foot and ray felix didn't dominate as well when he was in the league with russell, now imagine if bill spivey was in the nba and sherman white) and got russell

He also has a lot of overlap with Bill Belichick it seems.

I just posted a poll blog on Hardwood Amino about Kobe going to the Celtics and yeah it would've been nice to see him in that Celtic green but they missed out and settled with shot chucking prowess Antoine Walker instead.

Shows you the difference one man who knows basketball can make - while I do love ML Carr, he would not have been my choice to run the key decisions in the 90s.
