Lakers fan here, congrats Celtics. This video just showed me how dumb our front office has been, prior LeBron, where we could've got Mitchell, Foxx, or Tatum and got Lonzo Fucking Ball!!! 😭😭🤦🏾♂️
Lonzo wasn't a bad pick, he's just terribly unlucky. You can't always adjudicate for players lower in the draft becoming great, 40 people were picked before Nikola Jokic
@@SentientTeapot2444 Mitchell I understand, bc he was picked 17th. But we literally picked up Lonzo bc of his dad hyping him up. Like, we could've got De'Arron Foxx or Tatum. If we picked up Tatum, and kept our young core we could have way more success since 2017, (when they were drafted).
@@SentientTeapot2444 I would even say everyone clowning Bronny, but I feel like he would even have a better rookie year than Lonzo, honestly. Lonzo was the 2nd pick and barely avg 5 pts, Bronny could at least avg 10 rn.
@@abnerallen2334 The Lakers was not getting Tatum. If there was any interest of Tatum at #2, the Celtics would've kept the #1 pick to draft Tatum. I will say that De'Arron Fox was a miss though. Just know I was high on Zo and he was playing very well alongside Bron until he got hurt. Yall still got a chip though out of it trading for AD
Dude, Lonzo had injuries. I mean seriously, if he hadn't worn Big Baller Brand shoes, he may have been healthy. And healthy Lonzo was nuts. Magic said that Lonzo's name would be hanging from one of those banners... and even though Magic is prone to exaggeration... he said that for a reason. Lonzo is one of the very very very rare talents that could have led a team without scoring. His passing genius and vision is up there with the bests ever. And then, to make up for his lack of scoring, he had elite defense. Lonzo was the right pick. He just got injured. That's all. And now they just recently did a brand-new surgery on him that's never really been done before -- they just replaced his meniscus with a dead guy's meniscus and added in tons of dead guy cartilage. I'm not joking. Given Lonzo's track record, I wouldn't hold my breath, but if somehow this brand-new multi-million dollar surgery works, we may yet see some of the Lonzo-that-could-have been. This is all easy for me to say as a Pistons fan, since I'm on the outside looking in. But I would have made the Lonzo pick in a heartbeat. And knowing what we know now, I'd still make the pick -- I'd just bench him until he wore legit shoes. Ban him from wearing BBB's. Then I'd have my star. And imagine healthy Lonzo with Ingram and Randle. Add in a superstar free agent not named LeBron (LeBron is amazing, but he wanted to win-now). Boom.
@@liamrab6it wasn’t a mistake, if you have the opportunity to trade Isaiah Thomas for a 3 years younger and better Kyrie Irving. You do that 101 times out of 100. And people are acting like he got traded to a horrible team, he got traded to the reigning EC champs who routinely beat him and got to play with LeBron. At least Jrue Holiday won a ring for the Bucks, but Milwaukee saw they could get Dame Lillard and shipped Jrue on a first class flight to Portland. Wrong basketball move or right, they’re not some evil actors for trying to upgrade their team.
@Christian-eq6pq Truth be told, IT was never a championship level first option, and the hip injury he got was the beginning of the end for rather. Rather than overpaying an aging, small point guard with a major injury, they did the smart thing
As a C’s fan, I just realized Wemby actually helped the Celtics win a championship. In the 2nd-to-last game of the season, Wemby single-handedly carried the Spurs to a win over the Nuggets. This led to the Nuggets being knocked down to the 2nd seed and entering the playoff bracket with the Timbwerwolves. The Twolves were quite literally designed to beat the Nuggets, and that’s exactly what happened. The Nuggets match up well against the Celtics, and if they made the Finals, they probably would have repeated.
i love how you break these videos down man, i somewhat get emotional in the end haha. i am not a celtics fan but i do appreciate the athleticism in that team especially the starting 5. i wondered how are they this good now. thank you for this back story. it is really inspiring on a personal level too. make sacrifices now to reap great benefits in the future. i have a new profound respect for the celtics . thank you jimmy. new subscriber now. keep the in depth videos coming. bless up.
Tbh I never heard anyone say the Nets trade was bad. I always heard it was the other way around. At the very least people said it was a risk to go all in on Pierce, Garnett and Terry so late in their careers but that Nets team had Joe Johnson and Deron Williams so it made the team look stacked
It was that Russian Billionaire that after buying the team, he wanted to make a splash to start off with marquee names and get fans excited and buying tickets! As a Celtic fan…. Thank you Russian guy! 🎉
Bro exactly. I don't know what jimmy is smoking with this one. No one said the Celtics lost that trade we were all pumped that it actually went through. I think he's just looking for desperate content here after the season
The Nets were one of the favourites after the trade, they already had Brook Lopez & Shaun Livingston alongside Deron Williams. It's a shame they coylsnt stay healthy.
Wow you are a really good story teller. I know I'm basis as a Celtic fan but really love the structure of this video. That transition from young J's to the J's of now at 13:22 was just amazing.
Great stuff! People love to act like the future is already written on players after 2-3 seasons. 8 years later, Jaylen Brown likely cemented his path to the HOF by having an absolutely monster playoff run.
Bro, Jxmy done had this video in the pipeline for like 3 years since he started picking the Celtics to win a ring 😂 I feel like he picked the Nuggets this year just so he wouldn't jinx it and could finally drop the vid lol
Having a great front office isn’t always about winning at first but if you continue to want to improve the team more and more and more Danny and Brad deserve all the flowers because the fans love this team and the players that we grew with in the process
it would also be nice to mention that Gerald Wallace was on the nets that year because they traded their 2012 first round pick to the Portland Trailblazers who became Damian Lillard. So you could essentially add him in that trade as well ha ha
You gotta thank the Portland Trailblazers and Miami Heat for Jrue Holiday. Damien Lillard’s first choice was Miami but the Blazers didn’t like what the Heat were offering in return. So instead Lillard was sent to Milwaukee. The result was Holliday being moved to Portland, who was then traded to Boston.
Cs trading Truth and KG to start their championship rebuild is poetic. A true passing-of-the-torch moment, and the final gift from 2 of the Celtics' most illustrious, most beloved players
Calling it the worst trade is not a 'final gift'. Nor was there any 'true passing of the torch moment', that would mean that KG and Pierce helped Tatum and Brown become NBA players. Can we dial back on the romantisizing 😂
When you happen to be one of the two most historic teams in the nba, 10 years is a long time to wait for a chip. There is also a good and the best way to succeed, we will never know if the Celtics could have won two or three championships in ten years with other picks/moves. No one controls luck, not everything went according to plan but circumstances allowed it to happen. The real success will be if they win another one or two in the next few years. If not, then luck played a role and we can't credit the Celtics for it. I'm not a Celtics fan, but they're a solid team with good chem, playing pluralism and no divas/ego. So if they play their cards right, they could even threepeated.
@@ΓιώργοςΚαπάτος This was well said. And may I add, draft picks are no guarantee that a player will pan out, or them getting injured. All I remember in basketball news about the Celtics were the coaching woes and key star players not planning out.
Its never just ond trade in 2013,its multiple times Danny Ainge (later Brad Stevens) who did some dark magic on other gms cuz in 13/1 start of rebuild for Boston they got ridd of Rondo to Mavs in perfecf time, got solid players in return (jae crowder), next season went for unhappy and unfited IT from Suns for nothing and he become absolute sensation 5'9 feet almost 29ppg then traded him (cruely) but in perfect time for Kyrie Irving, that season got Gordan Hayward in free agency who got injured in first game against Cavs (blessing in disguise) it just got more minutes for Tatum and Brown grew along side him more, also playing without Kyrie got them to next level where they thought they dont really need him, also Derrick White didnt expect him to fit so well into thier system but what they gave now for him seems laughable, so old Irish luck been loving Celtics for some good 10 years now
As a Denver fan, you owe us an apology. You are the new Stephen A. Smith. The second you said you believed Denver is the next champion, I knew we were going to lose. 🤣🤣🤣
This is well deserved!! Glad to see my team win it all as a Celtic fan! ☘️💪🏾 we had ups and downs as well as heartbreak in 2022 & 2023..we deserve to be champs!!
Im a lakers fan but I must admit the Celtics as an organization understand building teams better than anyone else. The Lakers are all about drama and show and headlines; and they don’t really win without at least one bona fide star. Meanwhile the Celtics, they build strategic pieces such that you can turn a 5’9 offense only player into an all star, and then in cold blood trade him for a better a player. And even tho that better player didn’t buy in and bailed (big mistake for kyrie btw), they still managed to build again with more subtle star players whose potential they know how to maximize. If Gordon hadn’t gotten hurt I do believe the celts would have had a chip sooner too.
Jxmy's videos are so good man.. the story-telling and explanation of every detail is why he is my favorite YTer in terms of B-Ball talk. And for some reason the transition of young JT & JB to them now at 13:22 - 13:23 is super cold.. time really flies and it's great to see how much they've grown in this league
Great vid. Not a Boston fan at all but totally agree the job the GM(s) have done leading up to this season was nothing short of brilliant. Just pure competence and showing a great understanding of what it takes to win.
I had it enough!!! Can someone just call Netflix and let this guy make a documentary? I hate the Celtics but this video production is through the roof!!!
Um.... everyone I talked to back in 2013 thought the Nets got swindled. I'm in my 40s, so I was an adult talking to adults that did a lot of sports gambling.
Great video to understand how the NBA franchises work. The building up of this Boston Celtics is awesome and they have done a very competitive team. With a little bit of luck they will be fighting for the Championship next years.
Jimmy-another interesting aspect of this trade (which you should know as a blazers fan): Gerald Wallace was previously traded to the Nets in exchange for a first round pick-which ended up becoming Damian Lillard
Thank you. I hate when people say the Celtics had an easy path. Their path wasn’t just one year. It’s been over half a decade of failures and eventually they get one.
It is crazy though how some teams no matter who the gm is always seem to make good decisions and some teams always seem to make the wrong decisions lmao
If I had a nickel every time the top-3 picks were in the hands of Philly, LA and Boston in that particular order with which Philly drafted a bust, LA drafted a player that was eventually traded to NOLA and Boston drafted a generational wing, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it has happened twice
12:55 by the way, to expand on this, the trade package that got White included Josh Richardson, which Celtics traded for in 2021 using mid level exception, which was acquired from Gordon Hayward sign and trade to Charlotte Hornets. Everything matters in trades no matter how small the asset seems to be.
@@raymondqiu8202 idk man, I feel like for those 3, it was a great move from the front office. They just got some bad luck with injuries, and some extremely bad, extremely stupid decision making from one Kyrie Irving
@@somedude15231 He meant that they traded those three all-stars for peanuts. KEVIN DURANT, JAMES HARDEN, KYRIE IRVING, for Mikal Bridges, Cam Johnson, Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, BEN SIMMONS? Really?
The way I remember it, everyone thought that the Celtics won that trade and Danny Ainge was considered a genius. I don’t remember anyone saying it was the worst trade in history like jimmy is saying. Pierce, garnet, and Terry were all in their mid 30s.
Absolutely no one in the media or fanbase thought it was a good deal for the Celtics at the time. People thought those 3 Nets picks were going to be late 1st rounders. Everyone vastly overestimated how much Pierce and Garnett had in the tank.
I can affirm cbhooped's memory, that many astute fans on Celtics blogs recognized that two UNPROTECTED 1st rounders were potentially extremely valuable. KG was also already well-known to be extremely injury prone. The fan comments are difficult to find nowadays, but you can search for old articles from 2013 to confirm that it wasn't generally viewed as "the worst trade in history" for the Celtics at the time. JxmyHighroller is exaggerating for dramatic effect in this video.
@@Skyberg21 I am a bulls fan so I absolutely hated the Celtics back then and loved it when it became clear that those guys were getting too old and weren’t going to win anything anymore. I remember that being pretty obvious to everyone. Lebron and the Heatles were dominating. D Rose was going to come back from his injury and they were the number one seed before it. The pacers were younger and better than the Celtics. The hawks were younger and better. The knicks were also younger, better, and just knocked the Celtics out of the playoffs before that trade.
Boom.
“They gave up on me” still hurts me man 😞
that was the one mistake the front office made. i was so mad that they traded thomas for a guy who didn’t want to be there as much as him
They need to make it right
@@liamrab6it wasn’t a mistake, if you have the opportunity to trade Isaiah Thomas for a 3 years younger and better Kyrie Irving.
@@liamrab6Thomas was cooked, it was the right trade. Kyrie just did Kyrie.
True, although no guarantees the Nuggets don’t lose to Mavericks in the second round or to the Wolves anyway in the WCF
thats kind a true, t-wolves play like they could beat anyone in nugget series and play like the worst team in nba against the mavs
assuming wolves beat thunder, nuggets still would have had to meet wolves in the wcf
Ehh

Tbh I never heard anyone say the Nets trade was bad. I always heard it was the other way around. At the very least people said it was a risk to go all in on Pierce, Garnett and Terry so late in their careers but that Nets team had Joe Johnson and Deron Williams so it made the team look stacked

You gotta thank the Portland Trailblazers and Miami Heat for Jrue Holiday.

All because boston has a competent FO

The Brooklyn Nets cant seem to do ANYTHING properly...
It is crazy though how some teams no matter who the gm is always seem to make good decisions and some teams always seem to make the wrong decisions lmao
*cough, sputter* Suns
If I had a nickel every time the top-3 picks were in the hands of Philly, LA and Boston in that particular order with which Philly drafted a bust, LA drafted a player that was eventually traded to NOLA and Boston drafted a generational wing, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it has happened twice
Great work by the GM. It really hurted when they traded Smart
So if Gordon Hayward didn't bust his ankle 1st game of the 2017 season then Derek White wouldn't be a champion on the Celtics.

Great work. It started with the person they were trying to block from the finals and ended in a championship when their focus shifted from him.
JxmyHighroller is exaggerating for dramatic effect in this video.
actually it was the opposite since they got rid of the core that took them to the playoffs and everybody shitted on danny ainge

@@Skyberg21 I am a bulls fan so I absolutely hated the Celtics back then and loved it when it became clear that those guys were getting too old and weren’t going to win anything anymore.
