THE BOAT: Scow Bow Mini-Cruiser. 14’ long (4.25M,) with a 6’ beam (1.8M,) and a draft of 2’6” (0.77M.) She features twin keels and a Ljungström rig. Every design decision is made to keep her simple, strong, and watertight.
In this episode I build and install the starboard side of the boat. This is the last panel for the hull and is traditionally called the “Whiskey Plank.” I add extra 3mm of fiberglass where the deadlights (windows) will go on the inboard of both side panels. I also build a collar for the mast tube wave diverter.

Hurray! Congratulations! Algorithm! Honestly, your project is fantastic.
Awesome, thank you!@@doyouwanttogivemelekiss3097
Well done, Cap'n Perry! Two fantastic milestones within days of each other! And may I say how impressed I was with the precision displayed with how neatly the starboard side went on. A job very well done, sir.
Thank you sir! It's getting easier as I get more experience.
Truly respect the patience and thoroughness you model for us. Thank you and congrats!
I appreciate that!
Congratulations! Glad you're working steadily on your project even if you missed the deadlines you set for yourself. Even if the plan changes the end goal should stay the same. Can't wait to see the result of your efforts.
Yes, I'm no good at making realistic deadlines but the work steadily continues and I'm still excited to finish! Thanks.
Don't forget to save some of that whiskey for the launch. Neptune will need his share. Have a great week Captain.
Indeed I will, thank you.
Congrats! Took a shot to celebrate! Please, keep going, Can't wait to see her floating :)
Very good! Appreciate the support.
I'm impressed with how that panel lined up perfectly at the bow, for your filleting. That's pretty precise considering that it was the entire hull side.
I haven't been watching much these days, because I've relocated back to the US from Thailand and I just procured my next boat project. And am getting underway with its gut and remodel. For many years I have wanted a Balboa 26' trailerable, swing keel. And I finally got one on a pretty nice trailer. So now I'm putting down some gravel in the back yard , building a gantry, and getting a sort of greenhouse structure up in preparation for my winters work here in Ohio.
The foredeck of the Balboa is soft, so that's going to need to be re-cored but I'm planning on cutting a lot of the inner liner out anyway, to refit the interior in a more modern fashion and to also make the boat more watertight, by doing away with thruhulls, old hardware, rub rail, etc... I'm also considering doing away with the actual swing keel, in favor of an encapsulated, poured keel. This is gonna be fun!
Good luck with the continued work on your build. I'll be watching your progress again Capt. Perry. Take care and Kudos on the Whiskey Plank. I don't drink whiskey, but I did pour a good glass of Cabernet to toast you as I was writing this. Fair winds!
Thank you, good luck on your project too.
Congratulations whit your Wiskey plank en 2 years of boatbilding cheers wonderfull episode.
Many thanks!
Congratulations
Keep fighting
I will!
Congratulations for all you have achieved captain! It´s hard to beleave for me that this is already 2 years now. I started following you on your old channel more or less from the beginning.
Thanks for sticking around so long! Yeah I really can't believe I've been working on this for 2 years.
Thanks for all your videos and have a good 3 years 🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰🍀🍀🍀
Thank you, yes, hopefully 3 years should be celebrated from the water!
Congratulations on the whiskey plank and 2 years! Great episode. I shall toast you tonight with a glass of our local Laird of Fintry! 🥃🇨🇦
Sounds good! Save a glass for me.
A tip a 4 inch wide paint tray covered in foil will increase your working time for large panels also epropulsion makes a great elec outboard paired with bougerv soft solar and battery lightweight and effective
Congrats, great job. Thanks also for the interaction. I get a lot from watching steady progress.
Awesome, thank you!
Doesn't seem like 2 years yet. Congrats on completing the hull planking. Skoal!
I'm feeling the time, but we're getting there 😁
Sven sent me.keep up the great work..blessings
Welcome! Thanks for coming over. Yrvind is an inspiration.
Looking forward to see it floating.
Yes me too, thanks for watching.
Well done on the starboard side close out!
Thanks, it was a good fit.
Congratulations 🎉 You're doing great - she's really taking shape and she will be a great boat when she's done!
What an incredible milestone, Perry. Congratultions doesn't sound adequate, given the precision and craftsmanship you've put into this project build.
Thank you sir, very kind.
2 ans, 3 ans, le principal c'est de le terminer 😉 bon travail 👍
Merci!
I toast too with wishky to your great sailing boat!!!!
Cheers!
Congratulations! I will take a Bell's on you. Cant wait for finnishing.🥃🥃
I'm not familiar with "take a bell's" but I assume it's a good thing! Thanks.
@@ocean_capable_small_sailboat Bells is a whiskey brand here in South Africa. Cheers.
Fine Kentucky Bourbon!
Indeed it is!
Congrats, captain Perry! Love your video's.
Thank you kindly!
Cheers & congratulations on getting to this stage, it looks like a real boat now.
Thanks! It's amazing for me to see it like this.
Cheers!🎉
Watching you from first episode and didn't even notice, how this two years passed!
My congratulations for achieving this goal and wish you best luck on your adventure - both building this beautiful boat and sailing!
Thanks for sticking with me so long! Completion of this boat is coming.
Hi buddy, your project just flying along, probably you going in the water way before me :) even you building your boat from the scratch :)) ⛵️⛵️⛵️
Haha, I actually think it's easier to build from scratch than to attempt the big restoration you are attempting! ... maybe. Keep fighting.
Congratulations, you've done a marvelous job, and i look forward to your continuing success.
Very kind, thank you!
Nice workmanship.
Thanks 👍
The forces created by a drogue are immense. Be sure to support the cleats really well. In production boats ppl advice not to use the rear cleats but to add special purpose chain plates to the transom with a metal bar bracing both chain plates internally against each other.
I'm getting myself a Laphroaig now to toast your whiskey plank! Cheers!
Thank you. I've added an extra 1708 strip where the cleat goes through from the transom all the way to the main bulkhead, frame C5 (I think it's better show in the episode where I made the port side.) Hoping that helps spread the load a lot. Then it will of course get a large G-10 backing plate.
Working Boat building continues. Congratulations on the whiskey plank and cheers ;-)
Many thanks!
Excellent!! Congratulations!!
Thank you so much 😀
What a milestone Perry! Congratulations and thanks for the two years of great videos. Dave from Canada.
Thank you Canadian Dave!
Congrats! Quite a milestone!
Yes, finally! Thanks.
Congratulations, A milestone achieved, boat looks good!
Yes! Thank you!
Very neatly done….
Glad you think so, thanks.
Prost! as we say in Germany. You well deserved that drink! Greetings
Prost!
I've enjoyed following your progress. Good navy (coast guard?) guy, to apply the cannonballs judiciously as weights.
Hah, thank you. It was Navy.
Congratulations.
🥳
You are doing an incredible job on your boat. I am so glad to have found your site. I am amazed how much room is inside the boat. You have sure pit a lot of thought into the design and layout.
What about a 6” mini sugar scoop on the back with cut out handles on the sides to climb back in the boat after a swim. You would also gain a little water line.
Thank you! Glad you found the channel too. A sugar scoop would interfere with my rudder plans, but I was thinking of having some kind of step built into the transom for getting back onboard easier.
You could have a v cut out of the center of a scoop that would also act as a rudder stop but also allow it to pivot . What ever works, just nice to be able to get back on board.
Well done I'll have one with you
Sounds good!
cheers my friend
Cheers
Good progress.
Thank you.
You take very seriously the whisky plank .CONGRATULATION !
Defined milestones help give me something to look forward to and break up the long build process into some small wins. Next one is... the last deck panel going on perhaps? Thanks for the well wishes!
CONGRATS
I appreciate it!
just saw a couple of episodes now, wow, what an adventure , i'm gonna follow this for sure, i crossed once from tortola to azores, kapt. Oy and myself , i never sailed before, and than seeing what you gonna do, respect ! and you deserve another glas for sure ;-) cheers
ps: i put the beers ( lots) cold whenever you reach oostende :-)
Ooh Belgium? I want to visit on the boat. I will work on it! Congrats on your crossing to the Azores, that is very impressive.
Great progress! Cheers! (Or Skål! as we say here in Sweden)
Skål!
amazing build! Keep it going
Thanks, will do!
well done!
Thanks!
Congrats!
Thank you.
Well done
Thank you.
Cheers! Congrats!
Thanks! Cheers.
Awesome! Cheers!
Cheers!
Congrats! Look forward to seeing her on the water.
Thank you! Me too.
Congrats! For the mast tube might want to check out a rubber drain pipe coupler. Home/Depot plumbing department has a "DWV Flexible PVC Coupling" , they are flexible PVC construction, they have two 300-series stainless-steel clamps resist corrosion and offer efficient seals for sewer and DWV piping
Thanks for the tip! I'll check it out.
great video , thanks
Thanks!
Wow, there's a lot of work behind todays video. Congrats on closing the hull :)
Yes, thank you, a lot is getting done recently.
Well done, it’s a process but your getting there, cheers
Yes, little by little, thanks.
Congrats! I can tell the starboard side went on much faster than the port side. Always easier the 2nd time around.
Very true! I learned a lot putting on the first one.
Looking nice!
I think so too!
👍👍👍
👍
Congrats on the whiskey plank, Captain Perry! Any thoughts toward a float test?
Thank you. She'll be finished and painted with sails and the lot before she ever hits the water. Can't wait!
Cement blocks make good weights for a poor man’s vacuum bag.
Yes, although I happen to have a lot of lead and no cement blocks.
Is that you daughters voice on "Boatworks Today" video? Congratulation on getting the hull closed in!
Hah, no, probably his daughter or niece something.
I'll drink to that, well done Skipper.
Have you any thoughts on the keel ballast? Maybe consider lead shot embedded in a foam or resin poured into the keels.
Thank you. I bought blocks of lead already off craigslist from a retired commercial fisherman. I'll eventually pour them into a mold.
Did you think about filling the mast tube with grease in order to make it waterproof? I have no idea if it would work, but it might be a possibility... 😅
Thanks. I don't think it's necessary, with the setup I've planned out it should keep almost all water out and no messy grease needed. There will be a shaft back aft for the internal tiller, it will pass through the deck and use bearing grease to stay waterproof.
Congratulations, great close out! I like your technique of pre- glassing long panels, what’s the core thickness you’re using? Looks like 3/8-1/2”? Seems pliable enough after glassing for slight curves?
Thanks again🎉
Yes 3/8". I would have liked 1" panels but the cost was too high for me. Yes it will still curve somewhat easily for the slight curves. Where it curves more I just leave it unfiberglassed until it's epoxied in place.
Cheers! Congratulations!!! Thanks for share this awesome journey with us around the World! Maybe a Two Year Special Edition Video showing the "best moments" and very short videos from your subscribers around the World do help add more subscribers?😊
I'll toast here (South of Brazil 🇧🇷 ) with a shot of "cachaça" - sugar cane distillate. 😀
Thank you! I hope to sail to southern Brazil one day.
Where are you going to mount the cannon?
Yarr
🥃😀
🥃😊
noticed your Kansas City shirt! where are you?
I used to live in Kansas City, I miss it, but it's too far from the ocean. I'm in San Diego now.
@@ocean_capable_small_sailboat i'm north of KC, work in Gladstone. Sail at Smithville Lake, mostly. Go Chiefs!
Go Chiefs! :)
I'm surprised you're going to mount cleats on the side instead of on deck. Why is that?
I saw that Baluchon was built this way and I thought it looked good. Keeps an already small deck area less cluttered as well.
Cleats on deck is no good.
It is asking for chafe
