My father always taught me to take my time and do things the right way, the best I could. I absolutely love how you take your time with this boat, and the results never disappoint. Love the color scheme, but more than that, it’s obvious that this boat is being very-well constructed and should hold up very well over time. My hats off to you sir! Looking forward to eventually seeing you launch her, but that’s a ways off yet I think. Keep taking your time with her, not skipping any steps.

A full explanation of the stage and aspects of the work and the options available. As for the colors, no one has the right to interfere, because it is due to the considerations that you set from the beginning. I would love to follow you to the end of the project.

Small tip when doing boot stripe or top-to-bottom transition. After taping, but before painting the stripe color, paint the tape seam with the base color. This really seals the tape edge and the subsequent stripe paint wont seep underneath the tape at seams. Makes it real sharp. Beautiful color scheme!

Hi SV, This is a good trick I've used often. I learned it when I was a museum preparator early in my career. This was before blue painters tape and bleed resistant tape. It does work great. However,
as I said in the video I taped only for insurance of being startled or getting a unexpected case of the jitters. I painted right up to the tape and just to the scribe line. I was therefore not worried about paint bleed.
Great tip though for those using only the tape line to define the waterline/boot stripe.( mostly done on fiberglass boats where scribing isn't an option)
Thanks for your comment and for watching!
      Cheers

She is coming along right nicely and looking beautiful. My Dad showed me the 'hole in the rim" trick when I was a wee lad and I sometime still use it today. Did you prime the inside of the centerboard trunk or will that occur later? Never would have thought to use the metal primer. I found that sometimes some of the people on Wooden Boat could be a bit snobbish about things.... ask about Stevenson designed plywood boats and noses get turned up. LOL

All wood will raise their grain if you wet them. This poses the biggest issue after you've put epoxy or paint on the boat, but if you wet it before you apply the finish, and sand the raised grain then, (do it twice just in case) then it won't raise again when you apply your stain/paint/epoxy. I would say this is especially important with epoxy, since it's much harder to sand once it's cured.

so you are not going to put a fiberglass cover over the boat ?. if it were to be in salt water most of the time . this fiberglass eliminates many of the serious problems of a wood boat in water ... so what is your reason ? just because they didn't have fiber glass in the 1930's ?.. so what is your opinion of covering wood with a layer of fiber glass for protection ?? thanks for reading my question . great videos .. boat is made like a true artiest was doing it ..

      Hi Hale,
In building my Haven I'm using carvel planking. Some of the reasons are that I wanted to learn the carvel planking technique, I love the sound that a wood hull makes while sailing, and the plans call for this type of hull construction. I have nothing against epoxy and have built a boat using it. Many Havens are built using a cold molded hull ( many layers of thin veneers of wood epoxy glued) I've had the pleasure of sailing a cold molded Haven and a carvel planked Haven at the Wooden Boat School. The sound of the water on the hull is much different. If a boat is to live on a trailer and is in and out of the water in a season cold molding is the preferred method. It's not a good idea to ever epoxy a carvel planked boat. Carvel planking relies on the planks swelling to tighten the joints making it water tight. Epoxy and glass cloth would not allow the carvel planks to move and breathe as they should. My Haven will live in the water through the season. When a boat goes in the water, the wood planks gradually swell up, closing the seams. That process is called 'taking up.' Wooden boats like salt water.
Salty water prevents rot fungus from growing and it also keeps deck planking nice and tight. Any well maintained wooden boat can live in salt and freshwater. Sluicing the boats deck and planks with salt water regularly will keep the planks swelled and rot at bay. This is important especially after a rainfall or if the boat in primarily in fresh water.
Thanks for your question, watching and for the nice complement!
      Cheers,
      Bob

Bob - In one of your videos, you talked about making the paint job "perfectly perfect," so that it would look right on an old design like a Herreshoff sailboat. I am currently restoring a 1956 Lightning, and hope to do something like a 1950s paint job. I am thinking that, like your paint job, mine will need to be imperfect to be perfect for my boat. I have been trying to find the video where you discussed this idea, but haven't had any luck. Could you direct me to the correct video? And, if there are other resources that would help me understand how to proceed, I would love to learn of them. Thanks, Mike Seibert

Maybe there's a really discrete l there?

I don't understand that punching the rim of the paint tin thing. Doesn't that create a passage for air into the tin after you replace the lid which will serve to cure the paint and it won't keep in the tin?

    • @sunny71169
      @sunny71169 4 роки тому +3

No. The rim is punctured in the mortise of the can rim. The tenon that is formed on the paint lid mates with the mortise preventing air from entering the can and preventing the paint from drying out.

Bob, your attention to detail continues to amaze! I couldn’t help but wonder as you started with the primer, if maybe your thoughts were somewhat bittersweet. I mean, as you covered those lovely planks you had to realize that you would likely never again see you boat at that stage. It just seems such a difference and a milestone . And to now be so close to flipping her! Flipping mine was clearly the biggest moment for me short of the first sea trial. She looks great and I am so happy and excited for you. Brother when you see the inside, you’re gonna have a moment believe me! Congratulations

What about sealing the seam between the transom and the hull boards? Is that not done?

Why not using a primer made for wooden boats?
