  • Nancy (originally played by Elaine Heilveil) has left husband Jeff after catching him in bed with a girlfriend. This despite her being pregnant (again). Motherly mother Kate (Sada Thompson) has a few home truths for her.
    From the pilot episode of ABC's "Family".

    She wasn't really condoning Jeff's behavior, she was calling Nancy on her behavior though. Complex situation and both Nancy and Jeff proved many times over to be immature and selfish and definitely never should've been married.
    Loved this show. The relationships between the characters were like those of real people. Complex. Every problem was not always resolved easily.

      I used to love Family, and picked it up again recently on Decades. Does anybody else feel as though, if the series was still running, Nancy and Jeff would still be in their dysfunctional on again off again cycle? That was the one thing which I DIDN'T like about the series.

    Although I liked Meredith Baxter as Nancy I'm not quite sure why they fired Elaine Heilveil. I thought she was a good actress. Meredith was actually the third actress to play Nancy. They had hired Jane Actman to replace Elaine in season 2 and she actually had filmed several episodes before they fired her and brought in Meredith who had to re-film Jane's scenes.

    This was a brilliant scene. Little Nancy was shocked into reality. It isn't only she who experienced a betrayal and hurt by it. There are always reasons for betrayals. Kate figured out her part in Dougs infidelity and fought for her family and marriage. Kate decided that her marriage and family are worth saving, she AND Doug did save it. Mindsets can change if you are strong enough. How many today would toss it all away? Everyone has to answer that question for themselves. 😊

    • @MsTexas73
      @MsTexas73 3 роки тому

      I never understand why Donna Reed gets the “perfect mom” rep. It was June Cleaver who seemed to be all polish and no flaws. The character of Donna Stone was more liberal and progressive in attitude and behaviors. Yes, she was a stay at home mom and loved by her family, BUT she had a profession prior to being a stay at home mom. She was a nurse. She knew life outside of the home. And as time went on, and her children grew up, she was hardly ever at home, as she volunteered and was a part of several progressive committees. She didn’t coddle her children either. She issued out punishments AND hugs. A healthy balance. I loved her relationship with Alex and her three kids.
      Kate is fair and just, but also loving. She doesn’t coddle her kids, but she does love them and love on them. Yes, she will check behavior that isn’t positive, but she also knows when to hit them with vinegar and when to pour on the sugar. And she knows when to be hands off and let her kids find their own way navigating the world, and when to be a little more hands on and guide them. Again, a healthy balance. All of her kids know they are loved.
      Nancy is so completely the opposite of Kate in some ways, that they butt heads, BUT many times Nancy deserves the tongue lashings she gets from her mom. Doug rarely goes in on his girl children. So that’s where Kate steps in. BUT she has also given Willie the business when needed. And both Doug and Kate seem to equally deal with whatever goes on with Buddy, while Doug pull back some with Annie, while Kate is more hands on with her.
