Yes, prayers, novenas, rituals should all bring greater faith and trust in God, not greater faith and trust in the prayer or ritual itself. Prayers and rituals are the means, not the end. Thank you, Father Mike. Praised be Jesus & Mary!
Fr. Mike, I am a Southern Baptist and I love it when I find a video you've put out on UA-cam. Especially the one about people thinking we're Space Dust. I like to show that to people because it let's them know GOD is real, and what they do matters, and best of all, they matter. Thank you so much!
For years I was into astrology and tarot cards and the like and it only brought more anxiety, pain and suspicion and the inability to live without knowing what would come next. And I am still in recovery. It's not like I let go of that evil long ago. And one thing that God has shown me little by little is that it all stems (attachments to those false beliefs and more) from lack of trust in Him.
This should be taught to kids during Catechism Classes at an age where they can understand. There are many staunch Catholics who are extremely superstitious. It should be put across exactly the way in which you just did Father.
This was such a good video to make us aware of the difference between devotion and superstitio. I think Catholics, myself included, can unwittingly let ourselves wander across that superstition line. It's important to be aware, so that if we find ourselves crossing over into superstition, we come right back over to devotion.
Thank You for your videos Father, I've been in the Confraternity of the Brown Scapular since 2010. My night terrors stopped immediately after enrollment which doesn't take long at all for any parish priest to correctly perform. I've never been superstitious about this, even though it immediately stopped the night terrors. I knew it was our Lord Jesus Christ and I knew the Blessed Mother was interceding on my behalf, even while I was resting. The brown Scapular was keeping me safe from whatever it was that was tormenting me at night. My belief is that of our church, this devotion is to our Blessed Mother and the scapular works like a shield that safeguards us from spiritual dangers. I believe this is accomplished through Blessed Mother's intercession with God. If we put our trust in the Lord, we love the Lord with our entire heart, soul, and all of our strength, it definitely changes everything. If we have faith in the Holy Trinity, and we have faith in the Blessed Mother's maternal protection, then she intercedes for us on our behalf to ask for our protection. Satan particularly hates this level of protection the Brown Scapular provides faithful members of the Confraternity.
I hang a rosary to my rearview mirror to remind me the presence of God. The statue of Mary and the Saints and the Angels are there to remind us of their existence and help us pray.
ST. POPE JOHN PAUL II: “Pastors must ensure that the practices do not degenerate into false piety, superstition or magic. The best remedy against ever possible deviations is to permeate these manifestations of popular piety with the word of the Gospel. Devotions to the saints, expressed in feast days, images, processions and so many other forms of piety, should not be reduced to merely seeking protection of material goods or bodily health. The saints must first of all be presented to the faithful as models of how to live and as imitators of Christ.”
I am pretty sure I put my socks on in the same order every time, but I don't have any superstitious beliefs about it. It is just force of habit. Even so, it is such an engrained habit that I think it would feel weird to do the other foot first. 😊
My way of seeing it, is when you seek answers and you can take moments when life is becoming rough to at least, settle on a thought that leaves you satisfied with an answer, where you feel good about it, then that's the series of questions you need to ask yourself and work on. "Luck" comes from the successful realization of whatever YOU are being guided to. In my opinion you will feel weighed down on a question if it's not right and you will feel floating or lifted when the question is settled in the correct manner. Just how profound love and helping others can make you feel.
I have had OCD since I was 4 years old. Just 2 months ago, when I was at my absolute lowest and just turned 50, God told me 'how arrogant is it that you think your ocd rituals will affect the proverbial butterfly that affects the hurricane?' And He flipped the switch and I have not even thought about any of those behaviors since! Praise God! I use that previously wasted time doing rituals to pray and listen to God. Amen!
Praise God! I heavily recommend Mark Dejesus, a Christian UA-camr who specializes in OCD and healing it. He’s AMAZING and has helped me be freed in a lot of the shackles OCD had on me. Praying for you.
@ Counting steps, choosing between left and right (in my mind it was good vs evil and the left/right changed depending on my level of anxiety). I would do silly things like pick something up and put it right back down because I felt like something bad would happen if I didn’t do whatever it was (could be picking up a pen and setting it back down). It got so complex that I’d think that if I did whatever because it’d “help” the anxiety, I’d get even more anxious because my mind would say. Great, you did the thing. But that’s actually bad now that you’ve done it so you have to undo it. The wild part is that whatever I did was so inconsequential- like picking the second from the top of a plate of dishes 🫣- that it was completely my mind and pride holding me captive.
My Sister used to be superstitious. Her first born was born on a Friday the 13th and there were tornado warnings off and on all that day and night. I'm very proud of her. She's gotten away from that and had turned to God.
Fr. Mike, for the longest time I've been waking up at 3AM & praying the Divine Mercy chaplet along with other prayers. Obviously I'm wondering since it's not 3PM , does praying fall under the same Hour of Mercy rule?
I kinda fall into that trap whenever I lose something and ask St Anthony to help me find what’s lost. I try to reword it as help me not be anxious while I’m searching for what’s lost
When we let God fight our battles, we no longer have to carry the burden alone. He knows what we’re going through and stands ready to give us victory in His perfect way. Trust in His strength today and let go of the worry!
Here is something that I need clarity on this necromancy item not speaking to the dead. When we talk about necromancy, are we talking about saying hi mom without expectation of a response? I never thought so. I've always talked to my dead parents but my sister says it's a sin. I don't know if they can hear me and it didn't even matter. It just seems to me to be a natural thing as if I were calling them on the phone. I do talk to God from my heart about things that make me happy and trouble me. He is the one that I trust beyond all else. I just like saying a few words to the folks every now and again.
You can always ask God the Father or Jesus to pass on your message or bless them wherever they are. Then you are not taking direct to them but trusting God to pass message on.
I'm American but I lived many years in Italy when I was younger. Italy's Friday the 13th is actually Friday the 17th. I believe most countries have their own "bad luck day". I wouldn't sweat over it.
I was also born on Friday the 13th and my mom always said that alone was proof that superstitions were silly because I was the best thing that ever happened to her, certainly not unlucky!
So glad to hear a talk on Catholic Superstitions. I have taken a break from certain Catholic devotions lately because of my tendency to sneak towards superstition. If I can't trust Him without those things, then I'm using them wrong. It's been a wonderful spiritual reset to just sit with God and let Him build my devotional life up in a more organic way. 🔥Jesus hear my prayers. As a single mother I’m struggling to support my children. Both of my sons are special needs, and require much from me but I know you will give me the strength and courage that I need to continue to keep going. So while I struggle to buy groceries and while I struggle to pay rent. I know this is just a test. I will keep faith. Lord hear my prayers.❤️
Amen. May the Lord grant your prayers in accordance with His divine will for you and your children. May they be all thst He has created them to be. Amen.
Is it okay for Catholics to use crystals for home decoration, more specifically in a prayer corner? I'm not (yet) Catholic, but I'm attending classes. I do have some crystals from one of my little phases that ultimately has led me to Catholisism, but to me they serve as a reminder of the beauty in God's creation. I'm trying to set up my little prayer area at home and would like to hear what actual Catholics think 🥰
No, that would be fine. Crystals become a problem when people start using them for spells and as charms, but at the end of the day, it’s not the crystal that is at fault for that, but the person who is using the crystals inappropriately.
I sometimes worry that I am beginning to use the Unfailing Prayer to St Anthony a little superstitiously. As an adult with ADHD and a new stressful job, I cannot say how often I have been blessed by Saint Anthony helping with finding my keys, wallet, and even my cellphone. 😅 I know that he is petitioning God on my behalf, but he is truly so reliable in this regard that he immediately comes to mind once or twice a day.
At work there is a massive superstition about not saying a shift is "slow". For many its just a joke but there are a good few who are serious about it and will negatively react if you say it or even sound like your about to say it.
Serious question: is it wrong to ask your guardian angel to wake you up in the morning? Because I sleep right through my alarm most days, and honestly it works!
When I was in college it was all the rage for girls to ask Therese to send a rose of a particular color to them as a sign, so they'd know if the guy they were dating was The One. I'd like to laugh about it now but it actually had some pretty serious consequences in the lives of a couple of my friends.
My whole life, I have had some kind of anxiety. Praying and leaving things in Jesus' hands is better than any medicine that Western science could ever have come up with. Thank you Fr. Mike.
I always felt this way, that many practices are really superstitions, but was afraid I was wrong. Thank you Father Mike for the clarification, I feel so much better now!!
Superstition is a rabbit hole. I am not superstitious because I don't have enough time. I believe in cleanliness. Also yellow/mustard colour. There's something I don't know,😂 like I don't like that colour. I pray novena because it connects my soul to understanding God better. I hope the colour mustard yellow just remains a colour. Jesus alone remains exalted in me and in everyone
I have a genuine question though. Is it superstition to wonder at the "deeper" meanings behind what are technically natural events? For example, natural disasters. We know for a fact that God sends natural disasters as minor chastisements. Is it superstition to think that something spiritual is behind the befalling of, hurricanes, or sinkholes hitting specific places?
Needed to hear that, Fr. Mike. I am on the 5th day of a 40--day Novena and I feel I have been bordering on superstition in praying this because I feel that I might not be doing everything the way it needs to be for it to be efficacious. So, thank you for this video. God bless!
I wonder if this, at least in part, applies to "getting through" prayers? I have ADHD and I'm easily sidetracked by my own thoughts, especially during the rosary. I often find that I'm just saying the prayers to say them and not focused on the context of the prayers; just saying them out of obligation. It's especially like this for me with my morning prayers. Is this way of praying less efficacious? Does my ADHD allow for more grace by God even when I know I'm just barreling through my prayers, whether intentionally or unintentionally? My intent is to gain grace and to trust in God but I worry that my distracted mind causes me to do "vain repetitions" in my prayers. Am I just being overly scrupulous?
I carry my rosary with me everywhere I go because a priest told me that it will protect me throughout my day. I'm guessing this is wrong and superstitious? Sorry, I'm a bit confused here and want clarification.
How could I ever trust superstition when God has given me a name like mine, Benjamin, "Son of my right hand," knowing as a foresight to the actions of my biological father that he was going to be abusive to my mother, whose name just so happens to be Sarah, "princess." Truly I tell you, God works and is mighty to save. Amen.
Yes it is ungodly but sometime it is based on fact a truth ( kind of ) ie. "It a bad omen to be the third one to ligth a cigarette whit a match!" Reason , in world war 1 a soldier ligth is cigarette ( the German soldier spot him) , then he pass the match to is fellow comrade to ligth is ( the German soldier aim ) and the second pass the match to ther pal joe ( the German shoot!!!) !!! Joe is dead a superstition is born!!
Why than to light up a novena candle for 9 days....? So a novena without the candle and just pray ...is that the same?now I don't understand the reason to let a novena burning nine days. So if I pray a novena as how Fr.Mike means to think and do right is it than : God asks us to light up a novena and than pray. And when we do that that we believe because God asks us to do this than it's good. But when we think not even about God but to think it's the novena ritual it's good than it's not ok? So the intension need to be that we know that God let's say say to pray a novena, that He wants it that way if we want something particular to pray for. (If we receive it or not)But is just a manner to pray and we than focus on God, it's Hè Who see our actions and what we think and intentions. Something like that?.
Correct. We should not get caught up in the ritual so much that the ritual itself becomes more important than the reason for it, which, ultimately, is God.
I had someone following me on social media who contined to try to guide me for over a year as well as telling me there was a curse on my mother, on her necklace, told me bad things were going to happen to my daughter and wanted me to do or get certain things for her to get rid of the curse...I've never wanted to follow anyone like this and eventually blocked her... the catholic church doesn't teach about curses, however believes that there are curses. Any thoughts??
From what I have read ,friday the 13th was the day that the Pope and the king of France had the brother master of the soldiers that the church used to protect the Arc of the covenant due to the fact that the king owe them money and didn't want to pay, so he reached put to the Pope to have them killed and accused of going against the Catholic Church.. but again, something that the Church do not talk about
Hmmm...the Ark of the Covenant has been long gone (except in Indiana Jones movies) since before Christ was born - way before there were any Popes or kings of France.
he worst part about Tarot superstition is that the dang things are supposed to ONLY be for card games and all the uniform art was just a way to advertise your art style to potential patrons cuz every 3 of Coins or Hermit card has the same composition. The games even specifically are designed around having 22 Joker cards in play hence the main ones anyone usually knows about. Even any symbolic value they have is little more than "huh, neat" if you take the Jonathan Pageau approach to symbolism and realize it happens, and its a feature not a bug. Oh there's universal solar worship across the planet and Jesus has pagan solar deity parallels? Yes, and? God made the world so the very cycles of nature to teach us about Him and ground His Majesty in physical things we can see and touch. Of course the Sun is like the dying and rising god motif, both exist because God wanted to prime the Gentiles for Christianity while He was shepherding Israel toward even being ready for the Messiah. Symbols stop being scary once you remember that Jesus is the Pattern of Patterns and the Symbol of Symbols. Adam, Serpent, Tree of Knowledge, Naked, Sin, Judgement, Death, all literally nailed together in the Tree of Life which we can finally eat from again. And then you can be like a child and just innocently go "well OBVIOUSLY the Apple in Snow White is like the one in Genesis, right?" without any prompting or deep surprise like a jaded adult. It just naturally happens and makes sense to them, because God wants us to approach Him like children. That simplicity is everything
Good evening. I believe the lady is so powerful because she is the lords mother, and we respect her and praying the rosary she is are lady ,we need to pray the rosary so please we don't use are lady for good luck she means more then that Godbless
Is using tarot wrong if you enjoy it for the artwork and use it only to help with self reflection (similar to journaling or meditation) - not because you literally believe in fortune telling or any supernatural property of them.
Mother Mary appeared I think I'm Fatima(?)each 13th. So I thought the possibility is that 13th. Further the numbers came from God so it's good. I thought the possibility was also 13th is maybe changed in not ok and with the apparations we can think to not be serious about that 13th is become to people a bad thing. And so also in this in the mind we can believe that people made of 13th a superstitions thing.
Is it the Gospel of John? The number 7 keeps coming up, but I'm assuming that is OK because it is about God or Jesus and not a "superstitious" thing...
Friday the 13th comes because that's the day the Church wrongfully excommunicated the Knights Templar and within that same year all the men responsible for the Knights lynching were dead.
The Lord is So Good ✝️✝️✝️I'm retired at 48, went from Grass to Grace. This video here reminds me of my transformation from a nobody to good home, honest wife, $35k biweekly and a good daughter full of love ❤️
Yeah sounds impossible, yet with Maria Luisa Clare, I've come to the conclusion that financially anything is possible. I got my self my dream car 🚗 just last weekend and a whooping $320k in savings already, My journey with her started after my best friend came back from New York and saw me suffering in debt then told me about her and how to change my life through her. Maria Luisa Clare is the kind of person one needs in his or her life! I got a home, a good wife, and a beautiful daughter. Note!:: this is not a promotion but me trying to make a point that no matter what happens, always have faith and keep living!!
Thank you for saying this!. A friend got mad at me when I told her burying a statue of St.Joseph upside was idolatry. I wasn't accusing, but trying to be helpful, as there are many practices, like wearing a scapular, that I avoid as my psyche will turn it into superstition. I need to keep things super simple. There are things that remind you of your trust in and relationship with God, which are good. Then there are things that have you essentially taking the matter out if Gods hands. Not so good. Thank you and God bless.
Father Mike, Fun fact, Friday the thirteenth got its bad wrap on Friday, Oct. 13, 1307 (Julian calendar) because King Phillip of France had all the Knights Templar in France arrested, most were executed. Torture
Question for ascension , how do you know God is talking to you , how do you know it isnt your own thoughts. How do you know when God wants you to go in a particular direction ?
I like the number 13 because our Lady appeared to the children of Fatima on the 13 th of the month

I've heard that Friday the 13th became bad luck because a lot of the Knights Templar were arrested and killed on Friday the 13th.
Yes so true. ✝️✝️
The fade out to Father Mike walking away and still repeating that song was hilarious, always watch/listen till the end! 😂
I am NOT superstitious. Thank God!
Friday 13th is fantastic.. if it wasn’t for 13 at the table in the last supper and Good Friday , we’d have no salvation ..
There is the theory of the Knights Templar demise on Friday the 13th.
Much needed reminder that the focus is to trust in GOD!! Thank you, Fr. Mike!
Amen😇🙏❤
If burying St Joesph is wrong, why are they sold for this purpose at the Catholic book store where I live?
Word.
I carry my rosary with me everywhere I go because a priest told me that it will protect me throughout my day. I'm guessing this is wrong and superstitious? Sorry, I'm a bit confused here and want clarification.
How could I ever trust superstition when God has given me a name like mine, Benjamin, "Son of my right hand," knowing as a foresight to the actions of my biological father that he was going to be abusive to my mother, whose name just so happens to be Sarah, "princess."
Truly I tell you, God works and is mighty to save. Amen.
I cannot stand it when my husband forces me to “knock on Wood.” I gotta put my foot down with him on this.
I heard that came from knocking on trees to see if any spirits wake up
Is there a Catholic Study Bible you would recommend?
Pre order the Ignatius Catholic study Bible
@ thank you
💙 i find it difficult to believe that people are still superstitious? Its ungodly, neither is it based on any facts or truths 💙
Does anyone knows how novena can turn into superstitious? thanks!
I have associated 13 with the Blessed Mother for her appearance on the 13th. ❤🙏
I wouldn't worry about Friday the 13th unless you're a Templar knight 😅
When I read the title of this video all that played in my head was John ralphio and his sister Mona Lisa singing “don’t be suspicious” 😅😂
Isn't Friday the 13th when the King of France ordered to mass arrests of the Knights Templar?
and within a year every man associated with the incident ended up dying
Good evening. I believe the lady is so powerful because she is the lords mother, and we respect her and praying the rosary she is are lady ,we need to pray the rosary so please we don't use are lady for good luck she means more then that Godbless
Is using tarot wrong if you enjoy it for the artwork and use it only to help with self reflection (similar to journaling or meditation) - not because you literally believe in fortune telling or any supernatural property of them.
What can you advice to properly pray like for example the novena?
What if I keep a rabbit's foot on my keychain not out of any luck it might bring but as something which was popular during the 80s.
I'm feeling really motivated.
Could you share some details about the bi-weekly topic you brought up?
Yeah sounds impossible, yet with Maria Luisa Clare, I've come to the conclusion that financially anything is possible. I got my self my dream car 🚗 just last weekend and a whooping $320k in savings already, My journey with her started after my best friend came back from New York and saw me suffering in debt then told me about her and how to change my life through her. Maria Luisa Clare is the kind of person one needs in his or her life! I got a home, a good wife, and a beautiful daughter. Note!:: this is not a promotion but me trying to make a point that no matter what happens, always have faith and keep living!!
Wow 😱 I know her too!
Miss Maria Luisa Clare is a remarkable individual whom has brought immense positivity and inspiration into my life.
I got started with a miserly $1500. The results have been mind blowing I must say TBH!!
Are you on Speed?
Can I be a little stitious?
God bless you, Father Mike Schmitz. You are my all time favorite person on the internet.
Thank you for teaching us with your videos, Father Mike
Amen.
❤
Amen. It’s a grave sin. God is in control and he knows what is good for me and will take care of me.
Father Mike, Fun fact, Friday the thirteenth got its bad wrap on Friday, Oct. 13, 1307 (Julian calendar) because King Phillip of France had all the Knights Templar in France arrested, most were executed.

Torture
We look to You, Heavenly Father. May we resist the urge to control, IJN 🙏🏾✝️
Question for ascension , how do you know God is talking to you , how do you know it isnt your own thoughts. How do you know when God wants you to go in a particular direction ?
I remember he did a talk on this question some time ago.
@@Theosophicalvisions thank you , i will look into it
Go to the adoration and pray sincerely. You will know where he is leading you and trust it.
